Abstract:
Abstract In this article we analyze the internal structure of bare universal and negative quantifiers in Italian varieties, taking into consideration both synchronic and diachronic variation. It is proposed that bare quantifiers are not standard QPs with a null DP restrictor, but deficient items where the Q-portion is paired with a classifier expressing the [+/− human]-feature, more specifically a special type of light noun. Items of this type are overtly realized in languages like English and in some Italian varieties. The overt realization of these items appears to be related to the surface position of the QP, as is crucially shown by some varieties that allow both variants. The paper also discusses some cases where these classifiers are still lexically ambiguous between a full noun and a light noun.

Abstract:

The main question to be answered in this thesis is under what conditions bare singulars are acceptable in Norwegian. Although every native speaker of Norwegian masters the art of determining (unconsciously) when bare singulars can occur, it has turned out to be an amazingly complicated task to explicitly state the sufficient and necessary conditions for appropriate use of these phrases in Norwegian. This thesis is an attempt to reach that goal.

Abstract:
The Bare Units is a transmission from a queer body/brain navigating an After-Hours Members-Only Club, a site of graymarket sexuality and commerce. Alive to the fizz and froth of visceral sensation- be it the damp texture of a limp dollar bill or the soft meaty slap of an ass- yet awkwardly vigilant to the unstated but specific social exchanges in a semi-regulated space, the role of the Newcomer collapses into the persona of the Participant, awash and implicated in the complexity of each moment. Collecting details from a personalized capitalism enmeshed in mutated systems of value and power, The Bare Units fantasizes a nebulous architecture built from a self-conscious fictional narrative of self, and all the provisional and mutually-beneficial transactions that might be possible within.

Abstract:
Integrated approach has been used to investigate the hydrogeological framework of a complex fractured volcanic aquifer system in the Upper Awash river basin located at the western shoulder of the Ethiopian rift. The groundwater flow system and mechanism of recharge of different aquifers have been studied using conventional hydrogeological field investigations, hydrochemistry, isotope hydrology and numerical groundwater flow modeling techniques. Litho-hydrostratigraphic relationships were constructed from lithologic logs obtained from exploratory drilling of deep boreholes. The result indicates quite complex flow pattern and hydraulic characteristics of the different volcanic aquifers. The litho-hydrostratigraphic correlation indicates that the permeable and porous scoraceous lower basaltic aquifer is extended laterally all the way from the Blue Nile Plateau to the study area. . The analysis of the temporal and spatial variation of water samples from different places revealed clear undwater-surface water interactions. New evidences have also emerged on the inter-basin groundwater transfer. Two distinct regional basaltic aquifers (Upper and lower) are identified showing distinct hydrochemical and isotopic signatures. In the southern part of the study area the upper and lower aquifers form one unconfined regional aquifer system. In the northern and central part of the basin, it appears that the two systems are separated by regional aquiclude forming confined aquifers, in places with artesian wells. The groundwater from the deep exploratory wells (>250m) tapping the lower basaltic aquifer and wells located in the south were found to be moderately mineralized (TDS: 400-600 mg/l), with relatively depleted stable isotope composition and with almost zero tritium. In contrast, the upper shallow aquifer has lesser ionic concentration, more isotopically enriched. Evidences from the different methods clearly indicate inter-basin groundwater transfer from the Blue Nile basin to the Upper Awash basin. The evidences also converge to testify common origin of recharge, presence of hydraulic connectivity for systems tapping the lower basaltic aquifer. This has enormous practical implication in finding large groundwater reserve at a greater depth that can solve the current water supply problems of the community including the capital Addis Ababa. It will also have important role in finding more regional aquifers along the plateau-rift margins in many areas having similar hydrogeological setup as the study area

Abstract:
The topic for this master thesis is transportation of heavy platform modules on barges. The goal is to find the short-term extreme accelerations, or design accelerations, that are limiting for the feasibility of the transportation operation. Motion response analyses have been performed for six different combinations of barges and module weights as follows: Barge Module300 feet 1000 tonnes 300 feet 3000 tonnes 400 feet 1000 tonnes 400 feet 5000 tonnes 600 feet 5000 tonnes 600 feet 8000 tonnes It has been observed that the roll acceleration is overestimated in non-viscous motion analyses of barge type vessels. Thus for the first case an additional analysis including viscous roll damping has been performed. The software used to perform the analyses and the theory used has been reviewed. The following programs are described: Genie – modelling of the barge (hull, ballast tanks) HydroD (WADAM) – modelling of environment, hydrodynamic analysis by source technique Postresp – combination and printing of motion characteristics Matlab – statistical postprocessing, calculation of design accelerations The founding theories are linear potential wave theory and source technique. The viscous roll damping, which in reality is non-linear, was estimated in a linearised form using strip theory and empirical data. Based on the calculated motion characteristics, the design accelerations are estimated by short-term statistics, meaning the extreme accelerations are estimated in 3 hour seastates. This was performed for four different significant wave heights and all relevant wave periods. The accelerations are calculated in the system centre of gravity, module centre of gravity and top and bottom corners of the module. The limiting criterion of a barge transportation is normally the forces the seafastening can withstand, thus the acceleration on the seafastening has been examined closer. Aker Solutions have roughly defined the seafastening capacity by setting absolute limits for the accelerations in the longitudinal, transverse and vertical direction. Compared to the criteria for accelerations given by Aker Solutions, the results proved that the acceleration in the transverse direction is the limiting factor. Beam seas close to the roll eigenperiod gave the highest accelerations on the seafastening both in the transverse and vertical direction, suggesting that these accelerations are governed by the roll motion. When viscous roll damping was included, there was a significant reduction in the transverse acceleration, and a slightly smaller reduction in the vertical acceleration on the seafastening compared to the non-viscous case. However, the transverse acceleration was still the most critical with respect to the given criteria. There was little or no effect of viscous roll damping on longitudinal design accelerations. Design accelerations for a 1000 tonne module were found for two different barges, a 300 feet barge and a 400 feet barge. The accelerations proved significantly smaller on the 400 feet barge, especially in the transverse direction. A 5000 tonne module was also tested on two different barges, a 400 feet barge and a 600 feet barge. As in the preceding comparison, the accelerations were significantly larger on the smaller barge. Thus, for a given load, switching to a larger barge can give a large reduction in the acceleration. There are indications that the results achieved are conservative, including the case with viscous roll damping. However, this is only an indication. The viscous roll damping is difficult to estimate correctly and therefore a suggestion could be to investigate the validity of the viscous roll damping model through model tests. A certain reduction in the roll acceleration was observed when the load was increased for the 300 feet barge, without giving an increase in the roll angle extremes. This indicates that for some cases a decrease in the metacentric height can, provided that the stability is sufficient, contribute to a decrease in the roll acceleration without increasing the extreme roll angle. In high sea states, non-linear effects can become significant. The resulting effect on roll acceleration is unknown. Hence, it could be advantageous to investigate the extent of these effects using a non-linear calculation model.

Modarresi, Fereshteh. "Bare nouns in Persian." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät II, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/17366.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the variable behavior of bare nouns in Persian. Bare singular nouns realize different grammatical functions, including subject, object and indirect object. They receive different interpretations, including generic, definite and existential readings. However, the task of understanding the reasons for, and limits on, this variation cannot be achieved without understanding a number of pivotal features of Persian sentential architecture, including Information Structure, prosody, word order, and the functions of various morphological markers in Persian. With respect to the discourse transparency of Incorporated Nominals, under certain circumstances, Persian bare nouns show discourse transparency. These circumstances are examined in chapter 3, and it is proposed that bare nouns do introduce a number neutral discourse referent. This proposal is phrased within Discourse Representation Theory. In the second half of the dissertation, the interpretation of bare nouns in different positions and with different grammatical functions are discussed. Under the independently supported hypothesis of position>interpretation mapping developed by Diesing (1992), we will see the role of the suffix -ra in indicating that an object has been moved out of VP. For subjects, there is no morphological marking corresponding to –ra on objects, and we have to rely on prosody and word order to determine how a VP is interpreted using theories of the interaction of accent and syntactic structure. It is proposed that both subject and object originate within the VP, and can move out to the VP-external domain. The motivation for these movements are informational-structural in nature, relating in particular to the distinctions between given and new information, and default and non-default information structure.

Abstract:
In an attempt to improve the process of supplying coal by way of water to Progress Energyâs Crystal River power plant, a simulation-based technique was developed to find the best schedule of coal barges. The technique uses discrete event simulation principles to find the best solution based on two criteria: minimal demurrage cost and maximal coal tons moved. Many factors are taken into account including channel capacity, tide dependencies, weather delays, periods of scheduled down time, and percentage of trips to each coal terminal. The same technique is also used for long range planning in the decisions of capital allocation of equipment, barge contracts, and coal supplier contracts. A Graphical User Interface coupled with Visual Basic .Net (VB .Net) code is used to implement the approach in a user-friendly and maintainable environment.

Abstract:
To increase workability and safety in tough environmental conditions, and to create a more economical alternative for jack-up barges, Barge-Master has developed a wave compensating platform for marine and offshore installation barges. To minimize the motions of the crane positioned on top of it, the platform is driven by three hydraulic actuators that compensate for the roll, pitch and heave motions of the barge. To quantify the performance of the platform for different environmental conditions and crane configurations MARIN performed both wave basin model tests and time-domain simulations on the platform. In this paper, the experimental setup is first described and the model test results are presented. Then, the theoretical formulation of the time-domain aNySIM model is described and the numerical results are reported. It is shown that the model tests and time-domain results are in good agreement. The results indicate that the barge motions can be compensated by the platform for more than 90% in 1.2m high sea states. However, it is also shown that the instrumentation, data acquisition and controller system need to be fast and tuned to achieve this optimal compensation.
