Abstract:
This introductory chapter offers an overview of the purpose and structure of the Handbook. It begins by explaining why the health care management field is a worthy object of academic study. Next, it offers a reasoned critique of two main streams of current literature in the field and then articulates three propositions that guided the Handbook structure: (i) both classic and emerging social science perspectives and theories can add analytical richness and variety to health management research today; (ii) an expanding range of health policy-related phenomena can and should be explored academically; and (iii) building a wider international literature base is a valuable endeavor. The second half of the introduction reviews the main themes of each chapter and the four Parts of the book. Finally, it discusses the extent to which the original three propositions have been fully worked out in the Handbook and where further work should take place.

Abstract:
Despite recent claims that serious poetic revision only started during the modernist period, most Romantic-period manuscripts yield evidence of sustained and sometimes obsessive revision, which could take place over a matter of hours, days, or years. This chapter surveys different editorial approaches to authorial revision and the vexed question of whether we should base our reading texts on the ‘first finished’ version or the author’s last ever set of revisions—the question which has haunted William Wordsworth’s editors for decades. After a brief discussion of the advantages of combining genetic criticism of the manuscript page with an awareness of biographical, social, and literary contexts, the chapter turns to public-domain manuscripts to analyse three examples of manuscript revision of poetry by Wordsworth, Keats, and Shelley.

Fontanarosa, Phil B., Annette Flanagin, and Philip Greenland, eds. Principles of Scientific Writing and Biomedical Publication. Oxford University PressNew York, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780197783030.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Principles of Biomedical Writing and Publication is a practical, comprehensive, state-of-the-art guide designed to enhance understanding of the principles of scientific publication, promote improved writing and manuscript preparation skills, and help navigate the seemingly complex pathway from manuscript submission, through peer review and revision, to successful publication. The book presents common issues that arise during the scientific publishing process; describes the ethical and practical aspects related to manuscript preparation, reporting research, and writing reviews and opinion articles; and guides authors on effectively interacting with journal editors. The unique feature of this book is that all contributors currently serve or have served as editors for major biomedical journals, including JAMA and the JAMA Network Journals, or have extensive experience and knowledge related to biomedical publications and information dissemination. Collectively, the authors of the 41 chapters in this book have published thousands of articles, including research reports and opinion articles, and have hundreds of “editor-years” of experience serving as editors of major journals. The authors also have been extensively involved with numerous aspects of biomedical publishing, including developing and implementing editorial policies and procedures; organizing and participating in international and national conferences and committees on peer review, scientific publishing, reporting guidelines, and biomedical information dissemination; and teaching scientific writing and publishing at academic centers and major conferences. Accordingly, the information, recommendations, and advice in this book are based on the collective insights of experienced editors and other experts in biomedical publication and will help guide the preparation of high-quality manuscripts suitable for publication in biomedical journals and demystify the scientific publication process.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the “market-driven news” movement that began to spread throughout the newspaper industry in the late 1970s. By reviewing accounts of the movement from journalists and researchers and in trade journals such as Presstime and Editor and Publisher, the chapter reconstructs how the market-driven newspaper movement took form as a culture of production that had a wide-ranging influence on U.S. news. Industry leaders felt that newspapers had to undergo a fundamental shift in their editorial philosophy—that newspapers could no longer define and prioritize news solely based on the professional judgment of editors and journalists. Instead, they proposed that papers needed to reimagine their role as servants not to an abstract public interest, but to their readers' professed interests and desires.

Abstract:
This chapter examines attempts to popularize and democratize news online through collaborative filtering. Collaborative filtering offers a means to replace the role of professional editors in setting the news agenda and deciding which stories deserve the most prominence. Instead of professional editors, collaborative filtering relies on algorithms to sort, rank, and prioritize the news based on the activity of large groups of web users. Various news sites have added some aspect of collaborative filtering, but the chapter focuses on social news sites (Reddit, Newsvine, and Slashdot) because they allow their users to make conscious voting choices about which stories should be most prominent. These sites epitomize the defining characteristics of the social Web and apply them to news.
