Abstract:
In the present article, the performance of base-isolated infilled frames is studied analytically. The seismic performances of four RC buildings, namely RC bare frame without isolator, RC bare frame with isolator, RC infilled frame without isolator, and RC infilled frame with isolator are analysed. The results show a decrease in base shear value and increase in time period due to base isolated buildings, while these parameters are reversely affected due to infills. The decrease in story drift for the base isolated buildings is in phase while considering infill. Also, it can be inferred that pla

Dissipation of hysteretic energy in the isolator of the base isolated structure under seismic excitation is investigated. The hysteretic force-deformation characteristics of the base isolator is specified by a nonlinear differential equation. The parameters of the equation can be adjusted to obtain various types of hysteretic models of the isolator including the elastoplastic type. The variation of hysteretic energy dissipated in the isolators is obtained for both harmonic and El-Centro 1940 earthquake ground motion for a set of important parameters. Pre-acting control in shock/impact isolation systems is studied. With pre-acting control, the isolation system begins to respond to an impact before this impact has been applied to the base. The limiting performance of the isolator with pre-acting control is investigated for a single-degree-of-freedom system subject to an instantaneous impact. The isolation performance index is defined as the maximum of the absolute value of the displacement of the object to be isolated relative to the base, provided that the magnitude of the control force transmitted to the object does not exceed a prescribed

The influence of high initial isolator stiffness on the response of a base-isolated benchmark building is investigated. The base-isolated building is modeled as a three-dimensional linear-elastic structure having three degrees-of-freedom at each floor level. The time-history analysis of this building is carried out by solving the governing equations of motion using Newmark-beta method along with an iterative predictor–corrector approach. The force–deformation behavior of the isolation system is modeled by a bilinear law, which can be effectively used to model all isolation systems in practice.

Abstract:
The base isolation, a kind of passive control technology, has been proved as a very efficient way to ensure the safety of a structure during severe earthquakes both from theoretical study and experimental effort. In general, the base isolation can be classified into two groups, which are sliding type and elastomeric type isolator. In this study, a new base isolator called as Multiple Friction Pendulum System (MFPS) has been proposed. The lubricant material, articulated slider and doubled concave sliding interfaces of MFPS are quite different from that proposed by V. Zayas in 1987. In this stud

Abstract:
Traditional rubber seismic isolators are rarely employed for residential buildings as they are big in size, heavy and expensive. Fiber reinforced elastomeric isolators (FREIs) have been identified to provide cost effective base isolation. In this paper, base isolators are developed using reclaimed rubber reinforced with carbon fiber reinforcement polymer (CFRP). Vertical stiffness of the isolator is determined experimentally. Isolators with 4, 6, 8, 10 11 and 12 layers of reclaimed rubber pads with and without CFRP reinforcement are considered in the study. Effect of aspect ratio on vertical s

Abstract:
The motivation for this project developed from testing of a full scale building isolated with triple friction pendulum bearings on the E-defense shake table in Japan. The test demonstrated experimentally that the vertical component of ground motion can amplify both the base shear and the story acceleration in the isolated building. Vertical shaking introduced high-frequency variation in the axial force of the bearings, and, consequently, a high-frequency component in the bearing lateral force, which excited higher structural modes in the building. Since vertical bridges are flexible in the ver

The intent of this proposal was to study the interaction between nonpathogenic mutants of Colletotrichum magna and Fusarium oxysporum, and the cucurbit host defense system. We had shown previously that a nonpathogenic endophytic mutant path- 1 of C. magna, caused no visible disease symptoms but protected watermelon seedlings from disease caused by the wildtype isolate and F. o. niveum. Objectives were: 1) Determine the microscopic, biochemical and molecular genetic interaction between "protected" (path- 1 colonized) cucurbit hosts and wildtype isolates of C. magna; 2) Isolate non-pathogenic mu

Abstract:
Control of agro-associated pathogens is becoming increasingly difficult due to increased resistance and mounting restrictions on chemical pesticides and antibiotics. Likewise, in veterinary and human environments, there is increasing resistance of pathogens to currently available antibiotics requiring discovery of novel antibiotic compounds. These drawbacks necessitate discovery and application of microorganisms that can be used as biocontrol agents (BCAs) and the isolation of novel biologically-active compounds. This highly-synergistic one year project implemented an innovative pipeline aimed

Abstract:
T-2 toxin, a toxic product belongs to the trichothecene mycotoxins, attracts major interest because of its severe detrimental effects on the health of human and farm animals. The occurrence of trichothecenes contamination is global and they are very resistant to physical or chemical detoxification techniques. Trichothecenes are absorbed in the small intestine into the blood stream. The hypothesis of this project was to develop a protecting system using probiotic bacteria that will express trichothecene 3-O-acetyltransferase (Tri101) that convert T-2 to a less toxic intermediate to reduce inges

Abstract:
The trichothecene deoxynivalenol (DON, vomitoxin), one of the most common mycotoxin contaminants of grains, is produced by members of the Fusarium genus. DON poses a health risk to consumers and impairs livestock performance because it causes feed refusal, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hemolytic effects and cellular injury. The occurrence of trichothecenes contamination is global and they are very resistant to physical or chemical detoxification techniques. Trichothecenes are absorbed in the small intestine into the blood stream. The overall objective of this project was to develop a protecting
