Abstract:
The base transceiver stations (BTS) are telecom infrastructures that facilitate wireless communication between the subscriber device and the telecom operator networks. They are deployed in suitable places having a lot of freely propagating ambient radio frequency (RF) and solar energies. This paper is aimed at converting received ambient environmental energy into usable electricity to power the stations. We proposed a hybrid energy harvesting system that can collect energy from RF and solar energies at the same time. The sources are combined to provide to a significant amount, to contribute to operational expenditures that reduce energy costs, and to improve the energy efficiency of the base station sites in rural areas from the most common renewable resources since the base stations are major consumers of cellular networks. The hybrid systems are designed with circuits, simulated, and compared to show their good performance to the base stations. PSIM, PROTEUS, and MATLAB software are used to simulate for evaluating the voltage and the current output of the hybrid systems that meet the power requirements. The design and simulation results show the feasibility of our proposed method with the battery storage that can be deployed not only in real base stations but also for other electrical operated systems.

Abstract:
In this study, measurement of radiofrequency exposure due to cellular transceiver base station antennas was carried out. Both far and near field measurements of electric field and magnetic field level were made around selected transceiver base station antennas in selected South-South States Nigeria, with the aid of frequency-dependent equipment (CORNET, Electrosmog meter ED78S EMF RF/LF Dual mode model). The results obtained were analysed using thermal related indices such as specific absorption rate (SAR) with peak value in cerebrospinal fluid-CSF (0.095358W/kg), temperature rise with peak also in CSF (0.008381 oC). These results were compared with threshold values of 2 W/kg and 0.08 W/kg for SAR (over the head and whole body respectively), and 1oC for temperature rise as set by International Commission of Non Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The results indicate that none of the network operators in the study area have SAR above the recommended threshold value with the worst case observed in Calabar.

Abstract:
When a natural disaster occurs one of the major crisis is communication. This is mainly because when a calamity occurs all the cellular networks, towers and other contemporary means of network goes down making it impossible to communicate with others. Thus in this paper we propose an alternative solution for communication during disaster which can be achieved using a Long range radio transceiver module, which can operate without the help of any towers or base stations. The proposed transceiver model is a standalone device which can transmit and receive voice signals which operates on ISM band of frequency range 902 to 928 MHz, providing a hinderance free good communication, and as an additional feature is made to receive FM station signals using FM radio module, to keep us updated with the news, rescue and relief activities.

Abstract:
The development of the telecommunications industry in Indonesia is extremely rapid. It can be seen from the telecommunications operator vendors who served as telecommunications specialist co-ops rivaling each other in giving the best service to seize the attention of the Indonesian citizen, which requires telecommunications needs. Numerous realities have developed in various regions stating that the existence of Base Tower Transceiver Station (BTS) has resistance from the residents, which are caused by health issues (radiation), safety issues, to the problem of social value. Moreover, some people from residents supported the construction of Base Tower Transceiver (BTS) since the rental price of land for the tower construction is quite high. This study uses primary data from 100 respondents. The analysis technique uses multiple linear regression analysis, which is processed using SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solution). The next step is to test the validity, reliability, and examine the classical assumptions (including normality test, autocorrelation test, and heteroscedasticity test). In the end, it can be concluded that the people of Rungkut sub-district in Surabaya, mostly enjoyed the benefits of the construction of the existence of the Telecommunications Tower Infrastructure around them.

Abstract:
The use of distribution automation systems has grown significantly in electricity companies in recent years. The main reason for this is the need to have a smarter network, in order to reduce the time of power interruption. For such applications, communication using radio frequency is preferred because this solution is more reliable than 3G/4G and cheaper than fiber optics. In this context, it is of utmost importance to have a more efficient base transceiver station (BTS) that can cover the communication of a larger area. In this paper, the mathematical concepts of an intelligent antenna array, as well as the logical operation of an intelligent radiation system controller, are presented. Such system receives as inputs the geographic coordinates of network elements and automatically feeds an intelligent Yagi–Uda antenna array with the appropriate parameters, in order to optimize the radiation pattern into the desired directions. The presented model uses a stochastic optimization method to automatically achieve a set of optimal electrical parameters to excite the array and efficiently direct its beams in a fully controlled way. Thus, the results obtained indicate that the proposed intelligent scheme allows the energy optimization of the antenna system, reducing in 61% the number of BTS needed to cover the same area, when compared to traditional collinear antenna systems.

Abstract:
This paper describes lightning protection for mobile phone base stations by combining quarter wave short and open stubs. MPBS (Mobile Phone Base Stations) have antenna towers and are often installed on the top of mountains. Therefore they have a high probability of lightning strikes. The most important lightning protection system is a bonding network and an earth system. All incoming services should be bonded at the entry to the MPBS in order to obtain an equipotential environment for all systems. And SPD (Surge Protective Device) should be installed at the entry to the BTS( Base Transceiver Station). As an SPD, either a GDT or λ/4 short stub was used. However, conventional SPD such as a GDT and λ/4 short stub cannot completely prevent the lightning surge current diverging to the BTS side. Therefore we have developed an insulated coaxial SPD that allows lightning surges to be discharged to the ground while passing signals without loss by combining the λ/4 short stub and the λ/4 open stub. The performances of this newly developed product were as follows. Insertion loss was less than 0.1dB, VSWR was less than 1.15 and voltage protection Level Up was 80V

Abstract:
Method for Evaluation of Outage Probability on Random Access Channel in Mobile Communication Systems In order to access the cell in all mobile communication technologies a so called random-access procedure is used. For example in GSM this is represented by sending the CHANNEL REQUEST message from Mobile Station (MS) to Base Transceiver Station (BTS) which is consequently forwarded as an CHANNEL REQUIRED message to the Base Station Controller (BSC). If the BTS decodes some noise on the Random Access Channel (RACH) as random access by mistake (so- called ‘phantom RACH') then it is a question of pure coincidence which èstablishment cause’ the BTS thinks to have recognized. A typical invalid channel access request or phantom RACH is characterized by an IMMEDIATE ASSIGNMENT procedure (assignment of an SDCCH or TCH) which is not followed by sending an ESTABLISH INDICATION from MS to BTS. In this paper a mathematical model for evaluation of the Power RACH Busy Threshold (RACHBT) in order to guaranty in advance determined outage probability on RACH is described and discussed as well. It focuses on Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) however the obtained results can be generalized on remaining mobile technologies (ie WCDMA and LTE).

Abstract:
Massive MIMO have drawn considerable attention as they enable significant capacity and coverage improvement in wireless cellular network. However, pilot contamination is a great challenge in massive MIMO systems. Under this circumstance, cooperation and three-dimensional (3D) MIMO are emerging technologies to eliminate the pilot contamination and to enhance the performance relative to the traditional interference-limited implementations. Motivated by this, we investigate the achievable sum rate performance of MIMO systems in the uplink employing cooperative base station (BS) and 3D MIMO systems. In our model, we consider the effects of both large-scale and small-scale fading, as well as the spatial correlation and indoor-to-outdoor high-rise propagation environment. In particular, we investigate the cooperative communication model based on 3D MIMO and propose a closed-form lower bound on the sum rate. Utilizing this bound, we pursue a “large-system” analysis and provide the asymptotic expression when the number of antennas at the BS grows large, and when the numbers of antennas at transceiver grow large with a fixed ratio. We demonstrate that the lower bound is very tight and becomes exact in the massive MIMO system limits. Finally, under the sum rate maximization condition, we derive the optimal number of UTs to be served.

Abstract:
Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output MIMO technology is a promising candidate for the next generation of communication applications, which essentially group hundreds of transmitting antennas together at the base station and provides the higher energy and spectral efficiency. In this article, the transmitting antennas are assumed to be closely spaced at the base station, which in turn results into a mutual coupling effect between the antenna terminals. The optimal system parameters and the energy efficiency are computed by considering the mutual coupling effect between the antenna terminals. Mutual coupling effect is deeply investigated on the energy efficiency and the other optimal parameters. We propose the domain splitter algorithm for the optimization of energy efficiency and the computation of different optimal system parameters in this article. The computational complexity of the proposed domain splitter algorithm is not dependent on the number of transceiver chains, and the detailed comparison is presented between the proposed and the reference algorithms on the basis of the computational complexity, which shows the effectiveness of the proposed domain splitter algorithm.

Abstract:
This work considers the dynamic modeling and simulation of a DC hybrid power system for a rural base transceiver station in Nigeria currently being powered by an AC diesel generator (DG). The transient behaviour of the system is studied under varying solar irradiation to ascertain the stability of the power supplied to the sensitive telecommunication equipment. Each component of the system is designed and simulated in a MATLAB/Simulink environment and connected to form the whole system. A permanent Magnet DC diesel generator is used as back-up power for the system. A detailed presentation of the solar array, buck converter, battery storage system, battery controller, diesel generator and the load are presented in this paper. The result shows a stable power output to the load at rated voltage of 48 V.

Abstract:
In recent times, petroleum pipeline vandalism resulting into spillage has become a significant challenge in Nigeria. Citizens are regularly inundated with reported cases of vandalism which often lead to spillage and a drastic reduction in government’s revenue as is currently the case in Nigeria. This paper focuses on the design of petroleum pipeline spillage detection system. The design consists of the power supply unit, the comparator unit, the microcontroller unit, the switching unit, the transceiver unit and the base station. Simulation of the various units was done individually using the procedural programming application Proteus 8. Most of the components used were according to design specifications from data book with alternatives used in cases where they are unavailable. Wiring sensors which provided continuous electrical paths to break the signal path and trigger an alarm at the base station were used The design was done in units and were tested individually and the whole system was tested to perform the required task of detecting petroleum spillage and alerting the control room for action. It is found that the designed system had the advantage of responding to intrusion and vandalism better than existing systems.

Abstract:
This paper deals with establishing a GSM link over Satellite. Abis interface, which is defined between Base Transceiver Station (BTS) and Base Station Controller (BSC), in a GSM network is considered here to be routed over the Satellite. The satellite link enables a quick and cost-effective GSM link in meagerly populated areas. A different scenario comparison was done to understand the impact of Satellite environment on network availability comparing to terrestrial scenario. We have implemented an Abis interface over DVB S2 in NS2 and evaluated the performance over the high delay and loss satellite channel. Network performance was evaluated with respect to Satellite channel delay and DVB S2 encapsulation efficiency under different amount of user traffic and compared with the terrestrial scenario. The results clearly showed an increased amount of SDCCH and TCH channels required in the case of satellite scenario for the same amount of traffic in comparison to conventional terrestrial scenario. We have optimized the parameters based on the simulation results. Link budget estimation considering DVB-S2 platform was done to find satellite bandwidth and cost requirements for different network setups.
