Abstract:
[Formulae and special characters can only be approximated here. Please see the pdf version of the abstract for an accurate reproduction.] Ball-impact injuries in baseball, while relatively rare, have the potential to be catastrophic. These injuries are primarily attributed to impact by the ball after it has been hit, pitched or thrown. As the closest infielder to the hitter, the pitcher is at greatest risk of being struck by the batted ball. This thesis investigated the influence of bat and ball design on ball exit velocity (BEV) and the potential for impact injury to pitchers. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to quantify the dynamics of bat-ball impact for bats of various moment of inertia and baseballs with different mechanical properties. The analysis was conducted using ANSYS/LSDYNA explicit dynamics software. To replicate a typical bat-ball impact in the field, the model required input of bat linear and angular velocity and orientation in three-dimensional (3-D) space, at the instant prior to impact. This data was obtained from 3-D kinematic analysis using two high-speed video cameras operating at 200 Hz. Seventeen high-performance batters used a wood bat and a metal bat of equal length and mass to hit baseballs thrown by a pitcher. Hitters developed significantly higher resultant linear velocity for both the proximal (38.3 ± 1.8 ms-1;) and distal (8.1 ± 1.8 ms-1) ends of the metal bat (compared with 36.4 ± 1.7 ms-1 and 6.9 ± 2.1 ms-1 respectively for the wood bat). They also achieved a significantly more “square” bat position just prior to impact with the ball (264.3 ± 9.1 deg compared with 251.5 ± 10.4 deg). These factors are important in transferring momentum to the batted ball. Mathematical description of the large-deformation material behaviour of the baseball was also required for this analysis. Previous research is limited to compression tests to 10 % of ball diameter, despite conjecture that during impact with the bat, the ball might deform to 50 % of its original diameter. Uniaxial quasi-static compression tests on seven models of baseballs investigated baseball behaviour during deformation to 50 % of ball diameter. The resulting force-displacement relationship was highly non-linear. Hence FEA was used to derive and verify a relationship to describe the time-dependent and elastic behaviour of the ball during the 1 ms period typical of bat-ball impact. The results of the bat-ball impact analysis indicated that for hits made at the point of maximum momentum transfer on the bat, the metal bat produced greater BEV than the wood bat (61.5 ms-1 and 50.9 ms-1 respectively). The higher BEV from the metal bat was attributed to greater pre-impact bat linear velocity, and bat orientation during impact. The more perpendicular horizontal orientation of the metal bat at the instant of impact resulted in a greater proportion of resultant BEV being directed in the global x-direction (toward the pitcher), compared with the wood bat. This indicates increasing bat moment of inertia (the relative mass of the bat barrel) may be a potential control strategy for BEV. BEV was also reduced for impacts using a baseball with values for instantaneous shear and relaxed modulii approximately 33 % less (9.9 % reduction in BEV for metal bat, 9.7 % for the wood bat).

Abstract:
Excitement is rumbling through the city just waiting for the grand opening. A fresh new face has been added to the streetscape of downtown Roanoke. A new branch library and baseball stadium is set to open soon. The site is near the edge of downtown Roanoke, Virginia at the intersection of Jefferson St. and Elm Ave. All the construction is complete and cleared away. Residents and employees all around Roanoke are eager for a new baseball season to start up. Those especially eager are downtown employees, who have just a short walk from work to the stadium. The new stadium has created a buzz from all the downtown businesses looking forward to the influx of people this summer, not to mention the amount of jobs the stadium will provide residents of Roanoke. Fans will be treated to a great event and will be fully entertained. The mountains far away create a beautiful backdrop for all. With baseball games becoming more and more of a social event and atmosphere, this stadium’s seating exhibits a new socially driven design while still mixing in the simplicity of the traditional seating style. The new branch library sits atop the stadium having its own autonomous nature while also blending in with the stadium form. It has its own specific entrance designed only for library use. Its grand entrance reaches out from the brick stadium wall signifying its special use. The library is one long floor filled with book stacks, personal reading spaces, large group meeting rooms, and computers. Views outward toward the baseball field and overlooking the Roanoke area provide a peaceful spot for all to sit back and enjoy a good read. At night, the large rooms are rentable for parties on game nights allowing for a private feel while still getting the great atmosphere of the game.

Abstract:
The National Alliance for Youth Sports compared field reports released in 1995 to those in 2000, illustrating a 5% to 15% increase in adults that have gotten out of line at youth events (Carlozo, 2000). The purpose of this study was to assess the nature and frequency of adult comments at Little League baseball games for children ages 9 to 12. In addition, adults were surveyed in order to evaluate their personal opinions of crowd conduct. The participants in this study consisted of adults attending Little League baseball games in rural Indiana from May 30, 2001 to June 26, 2001. To address the purpose of the study, the researcher recorded adult comments using an adaptation of the Parent Observation Instrument for Sports Events (Kidman et al., 1999). An additional sample of 65 adults attending the last game of the season was purposefully selected to complete the survey portion of the study. The researcher tried to determine if there were significant differences between the nature of the adult comments (positive or negative), the frequency of adult comments by team play (offense or defense), by gender of the adult, by team status (winning or losing), or by competitive level (major league or minor league). Additionally, the researcher tried to determine whether there were qualitative differences between actual comments and adult opinions of comments.A chi square analysis was calculated for hypotheses 1 - 5 (p < .05) and the last hypothesis compared a chi square calculation to the frequency counts on a survey of adults. The results showed a significant difference in the frequency of comments based on the nature of the comment (positive/negative), gender, and competitive level (major league/minor league). There was no significant difference between team status (winning/losing) and frequency of comments made. There was consistency between adults' opinions of comments and actual observations. Observation results showed higher frequencies of positive comments than negative comments. Through survey data analysis, it was determined that adults believed more positive comments were made at the games.

Abstract:
This case study evaluated Major League Baseball's (MLB) media product portfolio to identify how broadcast revenues have evolved over the past decade. This research looked back across baseball's long, dysfunctional history with broadcasters in order to recognize the significance of its ambitious use of online content. While MLB had failed to fully utilize the potential of broadcasting, the league's aggressive online strategy through its Advanced Media (MLBAM) division made it the industry leader in broadcasting live streaming sports video. MLBAM expanded its online streaming video to mobile phones and iPad, further expanding the distribution of its content. This research compared MLBAM revenue to traditional broadcast revenue while analyzing the online division's role in promoting the MLB brand. This case study concluded that while MLBAM had made a number of groundbreaking developments, the league could still improve its use of embedded, shared video clips, archived footage and international marketing in order to further extend the brand equity of the MLB, its thirty individual brands and its media product portfolio.

Fortenbaugh, David. "The Biomechanics of the Baseball Swing." Scholarly Repository, 2011. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/540.

Full text
Abstract:
Success in baseball batting is fundamental to the sport, however it remains one of, if not the most, challenging skills in sports to master. Batters utilize the kinetic chain to transfer energy from the lower body to the upper body to the bat, hoping to impart the maximum amount of energy into the ball. Scientists and coaches have researched the swing and developed theories on the keys for successful batting, but most of this research has been inadequate in attempting to fully describe the biomechanics of batting. The purposes of this study were to improve upon the methodology of previous researchers, provide a full biomechanical description of the swing, and compare swings against pitches thrown to different locations and at different speeds. AA-level Minor League Baseball players (n=43) took extended rounds of batting practice in an indoor laboratory against a pitcher throwing a mixture of fastballs and changeups. An eight camera motion analysis system and two force plates recording at 300 Hz captured the biomechanical data. The swing was divided into six phases (stance, stride, coiling, swing initiation, swing acceleration, and follow-through) by five key events (lead foot off, lead foot down, weight shift commitment, maximum front foot vertical ground reaction force, and bat-ball contact). Twenty-eight kinematic measurements and six ground reaction force measurements were computed based on the marker and force plate data, and all were assessed throughout the phases. First, a comprehensive description of a composite of the batters’ swings against fastballs “down the middle” was provided. Second, successful swings against fastballs thrown to one of five pitch locations (HIGH IN, HIGH OUT, LOW IN, LOW OUT, MIDDLE) were compared in terms of selected kinematics at the instant of bat-ball contact, timing and magnitude of peak kinematic velocities, and timing and magnitude of peak ground reaction forces. Third, these variables were once again compared for swings against fastballs and changeups. A large number of biomechanical differences were seen among the swings against various pitch locations. More fully rotated positions, particularly of the pelvis and bat were critical to the batters’ successes on inside pitches while less rotated positions keyed successes against outside pitches. The trail and lead arms worked together as part of a closed chain to drive the hand path. Successful swings had the trail elbow extended more for HIGH IN and flexed more for LOW OUT, though batters often struggled to execute this movement properly. A distinct pattern among successful swings against fastballs, successful swings against changeups, and unsuccessful swings against changeups was witnessed; namely a progressive delay in which the batter prematurely initiated the events of the kinetic chain, especially when unsuccessful in hitting a changeup. It was believed that this study was much more effective in capturing the essence of baseball batting than previous scientific works. Some recommendations to batting coaches would be to get batters to take a consistent approach in the early phases of every swing (particularly for the lower body), identify both pitch type and location as early as possible, use the rotation of the pelvis to propagate the energy transfer of the kinetic chain from the group to the upper body, and use the pelvis, and subsequently, the upper body, to orient the trunk and hands to an optimal position to drive the ball to the desired field. Limitations of the current study and ideas for future work were also presented to better interpret the findings of this research and further connect science and sport.

Abstract:
The Green Light letter from President Franklin Roosevelt to Major League Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis gave MLB permission to continue throughout World War II. The team owners felt relief that MLB is the only professional sport to survive during the years of World War II (1941-1945). MLB became a primary contributor toward the war effort. While war-supporting efforts were conducted, team owners positioned themselves to benefit from the bond between baseball and the American people. MLB portrayed itself through the commissioner’s office policy as a patriotic partner by providing entertainment for American factory workers and contributing equipment to servicemen overseas. MLB also remained a monopoly without Congressional inquiries or public challenge. Since MLB was exempt from anti-trust laws, team owners operated within MLB’s anti-trust exemption and strengthened position for the post war period.

SUMMARY Baseball is a team sport combined with numerous offending and defending plays in it. It is appropriate to say that baseball is a sport with both offence and defense. In the game of baseball, pitcher is the only player who may perform defending jobs in an offensive manner. Roy Umstattd stated that performance of the pitching staff of a baseball team decided the results of baseball games by 60 to 80 percent. Robert K. Adair said the pitcher is the most important player on the team. Earl Weaver mentioned that the performance of pitchers was the most important among all players on the team. The importance of pitching to the results of ball games is emphasized in the game of baseball. In this thesis, the author organizes information on skills of pitching, specific training methods to pitchers, team works, strength training, and mental strategies based on his personal experiences as a former professional player and coach and sports related sciences. The author is hoping to provide helpful information to coaches and players to help them train more effectively. In this thesis, the following content is included: I. Introduction. II. Skill Training: Biomechanics in pitching, analysis of pitching motions, grabs of various pitches, how to throw different pitches, and how to deal with situation in games. III. Defence: After the ball is pitched, the pitcher becomes the sixth infielder who does defensive jobs with other teammates. IV. Training: Strength training for pitchers. V. Mental strategies: It is stressful to be a pitcher in both training and game situations. Learning mental skills would enhance the performance of pitchers. VI. Conclusion: correct pitching skills, solid fundamentals, appropriate training, proper approaches knowledge, and strong mentality are the best way to enhance pitching.

With the popularization of internet, information, media, electronic devices, or modes of transmission are changing rapidly in the 21st century, and scientific and technological development is fast. To people, the internet is undoubtedly the fastest and most convenient source of information. The use of internet in Taiwan is popular. Due to the development of internet, information abundance enables the public to use the interest as a tool to understand how to find the information they need in a rapid and accurate manner. Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) has experienced 28 seasons in Taiwan. Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) has been established for more than 70 years. As the number of fans watching professional baseball games gradually increases, more and more fans are searching for various messages via professional baseball team websites. CPBL, NPB and even various professional baseball teams have to think carefully how to maintain and increase the scale and intensity of baseball games. The three purposes of this study are: 1) to summarize the current status of services provided by professional baseball team websites; 2) to use ICDT model to analyze the content of professional baseball team websites and compare their similarities and differences; 3) to establish the most adequate website consent required to be provided by professional baseball team websites. This study used ICDT model and Usability to develop 5 categories, including virtual message space, virtual communication space, virtual distribution space, virtual trading space, and internet resource application. It also used content analysis method to determine the most adequate website content required to be provided by professional baseball teams. The research results showed that the information disclosure level of 29 functions was high, that of 14 functions was medium, and that of 9 functions, including rookie players, injured players, player upgrade or downgrade information, seasonal results of minor league, seasonal history of minor league, supermarket pickup, stadium visit, global pickup, and pickup in store, was low. The functions of low information disclosure level should be improved to optimize website content.

Because the Internet developed fast in recent years, the events broadcast to the public through the Internet by student unit, so that more baseball game can be seen. Due to the Internet broadcast system is not yet mature, there must be operated by human for changing word card in the broadcast process, coupled with pace of the game is quite compact and provide a more complete game information. Therefore, this system is mainly focused on the adjustment and operation of word cards, setting up the word cards that we need to use before the game, so that we can quickly switch the word cards and adjust its contents according to the game in broadcast live. There can be divided into historical information and current information in the classification of word cards, the content of historical information cards was obtained through the baseball records database, and the current information word card is read into a single game of the Access file and shows the current game content with baseball record system.

The value of Major League Baseball players has long been viewed as the most controversial issue. In order to analyze the relationship between players' abilities and their salaries, list of all Major League Baseball players excluding pitchers, catchers and designated hitters in all games during 2005 and 2014 were collected. The winning percentages and team-level performance figures during this period were also collected. The approach was divided into three parts. First, the panel data two-way fixed effect model, considered individual-specific effect and time-specific effect simultaneously, was used to estimate the salary equation. By roughly dividing the fielders' performance into aggressive ability and fielding ability, we can dig out that only the shortstops' fielding ability is significantly valuable while almost every fielder's aggressive ability is all significantly valuable. Therefore, we can verify the stereotype about "Bat is more valuable than gloves for baseball players." Secondly, the same methodology was used to estimate the relationship between winning percentage and team performance. It was found that the pitcher's ability contributes the most, followed by aggressive ability, and the fielding ability in the last place. So we can treat the stereotype mentioned earlier as a reasonable phenomenon. The last method applied was the panel quantile regression with fixed effect, which was proposed in Koenker (2004), to estimate the salary equations in different quantiles of salary. We found that the fielding abilities were almost insignificant in every quantile we concerned while the values of aggressive ability and historical aggressive ability increase with the quantile ascend.

With the development of multimedia technology, real-time analysis of sport videos can enhance the entertainment when people are watching sport videos. This study aims to develop a baseball trajectory tracking system using sport videos, which can automatically reproduce the baseball trajectory when a pitcher is throwing the baseball. Research methods include: (1) image preprocessing; (2) baseball detection; and (3) baseball trajectory tracking. Our system mainly uses image and video processing technology to extract baseball candidate regions in consecutive frames. Meanwhile, the baseball’s location is detected using position, size, color, and shape features. Finally, the Kalman filter is used for the baseball trajectory tracking. Preliminary results show that this method could achieve the average baseball detection rate of 82% and the average baseball trajectory tracking accuracy of 91%. In conclusion, this study presents an effective automated motion analysis system that could reproduce the baseball trajectory, further bringing viewers a richer game content.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the current situation of the Chinese professional baseball team and the Australian professional baseball team, and to study the Chinese professional baseball team and the Australian professional baseball team. Through the four aspects of government support, home operation, salary structure, and farm management, the status of the Chinese professional baseball team and the Australian professional baseball team are discussed. The results show that: 1. Government support: In addition to the existing subsidies, the central government can cooperate with local governments to expand existing subsidies. Australia has a unique tourism resources. If you can use government resources combined with Australian professional baseball, you can also become a new sports and tourism business. 2. Home operation: China's professional baseball home operations have a very diverse marketing strategy. Australia's professional baseball is limited by the competition system, and there is a little more diversity in the home business. 3. Salary structure: The signing fee and monthly salary of the Chinese professional baseball team have grown considerably, and the free market and salary arbitration systems need to be improved. Australian professional baseball is mostly based on short-term contracts. 4. farm management: China's professional baseball team has a very complete second army system. Currently, only four of the eight teams in Australia have their own second army. Suggestions for future: In addition to the operation and support of the Chinese professional baseball team and the Australian professional baseball parent company, more importantly, the government's resources. This study finds that there is still a lot of room to support the baseball industry in the government-supported part. The relevant units can still discuss the areas where the current system can be improved, integrate all resources, and make appropriate preferential measures to make our Professional baseball and even student baseball are booming.
