Grove-Rasmussen, K. Hybrid Superconducting Devices Based on Quantum Wires. Edited by A. V. Narlikar. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198738169.013.16.

Full text
Abstract:
This article reviews the experimental progress in hybrid superconducting devices based on quantum wires, in the form of semiconductor nanowires or carbon nanotubes, which are coupled to superconducting electrodes. It also presents a series of recent examples which illustrate the key phenomena that have allowed detailed investigations of important scenarios, including individual impurities on superconductors and proximitized systems that may hold Majorana quasiparticles. After describing experimental aspects of hybrid devices, including materials and fabrication techniques, the article considers superconducting junctions with normal quantum dots (QDs). It then turns to experiments on superconductivity-enhanced QD spectroscopy, sub-gap states in hybrid QDs, and non-local signals in Cooper pair splitter devices. Finally, it discusses the growth of epitaxial semiconductor–superconductor nanowire hybrids.

Abstract:
This article discusses the use of bioconjugated quantum dots (QDs) for tumor molecular imaging and profiling. The need for personalized diagnostics and therapy is becoming apparent in all areas of medicine, and especially urgent and sought after in treating cancer. Mechanisms of cancerogenesis and cancer response to therapy remain poorly understood, thus precluding accurate cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and effective treatment. Accurate molecular profiling of individual tumors is one key to effective treatment. This article first considers the photophysical properties of QDs before reviewing the most common methods for engineering QD-based probes for biomedical applications, including water solubilization and bioconjugation approaches. It also describes a number of techniques for molecular imagingand profiling of tumors, ranging from QD-based multicolor flow cytometry and applications of QDs in high-resolution correlated fluorescence/electron microscopy, QD bioprobes for molecular profiling of tumor-tissue sections and microarrays, and QD-oligonucleotide bioconjugates for in-situ hybridization.

Abstract:
We present approaches to the semantics and pragmatics of information structure which centre on Questions Under Discussion (QUDs). Questions, explicit or implicit, are seen as structuring discourse, and information structural marking is seen as reflecting that underlying discourse structure. Our presentation of the model is largely cast in terms of extensions of Roberts’s (2012b) analysis, which is itself related to Rooth’s (1985/1992) Alternative Semantics and Hamblin’s (1973) approach to the semantics of questions. We present the model in terms of a range of constraints that relate information structure to discourse structure, notably constraints on the ‘Relevance’ of utterances, on the ‘Congruence’ of answers to questions, and on the ‘Availability’ of discourse antecedents. We discuss the application of the approach to the interpretation of focus and some cases of contrastive topics, to discourse structure, to the interpretation of focus sensitive operators, and to certain cases of presupposition projection.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a systematic approach to the diagnosis and acute management of hemodynamically significant dysrhythmias and pulseless arrest states. An overall approach to the unstable patient is reviewed with a specific focus on cardiac conduction and the effects of hemodynamics. By undertaking assessment of the pulse and clinical stability of the patient, the rate and regularity of the rhythm, and the QRS morphology, the clinician can make rational assessments to guide evidence-based therapeutic interventions and avoid the risks of inappropriate treatments. Furthermore, this chapter discusses the transition from stable to unstable to pulseless rhythms and the appropriate treatment for each.

Ray, Sumantra (Shumone), Sue Fitzpatrick, Rajna Golubic, Susan Fisher, and Sarah Gibbings, eds. Audits and inspections. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199608478.003.0024.

Abstract:
Audits and inspections are a vital and well recognised part of the clinical trial process. The requirement for quality data is recognised by everyone who works in clinical research. The ability to maintain accuracy and quality throughout a clinical trial is a dynamic process which involves both ongoing quality control (QC) steps and systematic and independent quality assurance (QA). This chapter starts by outlining the comparison between QC and QA and how these important processes form part of a Quality Management System (QMS) for an organisation. Additionally, we cannot begin to start discussing aspects of quality in clinical research without thinking about Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and this is frequently referenced throughout the chapter. Establishing a QA Unit, especially in the healthcare environment can be daunting. There always seems to be so many priorities and there are often pressures from within the organisation or from other teams for your help and support. It is important to allocate resources carefully to ensure the QA Unit is effective. By having an effective Quality Management System and a QA programme of effectual audits means that a range of possible risks may be prevented. Study-specific audits looking particularly at site audits are discussed as well as a systems based approach which is more common in larger QA Units. The audit process is reviewed in detail for both internal and external audits. Finally, inspection preparation, the inspection process and a detailed comparison of EMA, FDA and MHRA regulations used by inspectors is presented.
