The mechanism of the reaction between amines with dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has been investigated. Whereas in the absence of bases, they give methylation and carboxymethylation reactions without selectivity (BAl2 and BAc2 mechanisms, respectively), in the presence of bases, the BAc2 mechanism prevails. The carbamate already formed reacts further with DMC via the BAl2 mechanism to give the corresponding N-methyl derivative. Such pronounced double selectivity has been explained in terms of Pearson's Hard-Soft Acid-Base (HSAB) theory.Accordingly, N-methylcarbamates have been prepared from primary

The synthesis produced surprising by-products. Therefore, theoretical calculations of global and local reactivity were performed based on Pearson’s hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) principle to understand the regioselectivity that occurred in the reduction of the olefinic carbons of the compounds. Abstract.—We compared the habitat selection (temperature and dissolved oxygen) of striped bass (STB) Morone saxatilis and hybrid striped bass (HSB; palmetto bass [male white bass M. chrysops × female striped bass]) in Claytor Lake, Virginia. Striped bass (n = 28) and HSB (n = 33) were implanted with temperature-sensitive radio tags and tracked biweekly for a period of 19 months to record position and habitat use. Striped bass averaged 715 mm total length (range 533–940) whereas HSB averaged 547 mm total length (range 460–659). Habitat separation was most apparent in the warm season months of June through August. During this period, when deoxygenation of the metalimnion and hypolimnion was not limiting, STB and HSB segregated according to apparent temperature preferences, with HSB selecting warmer temperatures. As deoxygenation progressed, HSB and especially STB were forced into warmer strata than preferred. Results from this study suggest that if favorable dissolved oxygen levels are maintained, STB and HSB will vertically segregate during summer stratification. Temperature selection and qualitative observations of fish mortality in summer indicated that adult HSB would be less vulnerable than adult STB to a temperature–dissolved oxygen squeeze in summer and its detrimental effects.

In this letter, we proposed a simple balanced-detection reception scheme for the half-cycled single-sideband direct-detected optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (HSSB DD-OFDM) signal with decreased guard band. By employing this scheme, each entire OFDM symbol can be recovered perfectly, while the signal-to-signal beat interference (SSBI) can be eliminated, the guard band can be reduced greatly and the tolerance to phase noise induced inter-channel interference (PN-ICI) and potential benefit of low peak to average power (PAPR) are retained. The simulation results demonstrate that a 40 Gbps 16-QAM HSSB DD-OFDM signal was achieved successfully.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the design of an imidazopyrazinone-type luciferin named as HuLumino1 by us and investigation of its luminescence properties. This luciferin was designed to generate bioluminescence by human serum albumin (HSA) rather than by luciferase derived from luminous organisms. HuLumino1 was developed by modifying a methoxy-terminated alkyl chain to the C-6 position and eliminating a benzyl group at the C-8 position of coelenterazine. To clarify the basis of light emission by HSA, the detailed kinetic properties of the HuLumino1/HSA pair were investigated using a calibrated luminometer. The enzymatic oxidation of HuLumino1 was observed only in the presence of HSA. Results of HSA quantification experiments using HuLumino1 agreed with less than 5% differences with those of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, suggesting HuLumino1 could be used for quantitative analysis of HSA levels in serum samples without any pretreatments. These results demonstrate the advantages of the coelenterazine analogue as a bioluminescence reagent to detect non-labeled proteins, which generally do not function as enzymes.
