Abstract:
The next generation of physicians will need new skills, attitudes and knowledge. They will need to acquire skills to critically evaluate medical literature and will have expertise in Public Health, and home care. Medical education will necessary be linked to a new model of Public Health. In this context, it will be important that Biochemisty may contribute to the formation of these skills. During a transient period, some modifications in teaching Biochemistry may be beneficial to the medical students. In the last fifteen years we have introduced some modifications on biochemistry teaching for

Age-related differences in the in vivo incorporation of 32-P into mouse myelin basic proteins (MBPs) of the central nervous system were observed. The resulting specific radioactivity (S.A.) of the MBPs appeared to be related to the S.A. of the acid-soluble pool of phosphates of myelin. In development, MBPs were phosphorylated in vivo prior to the onset of myelination in the brain, indicating that MBPs are phosphorylated prior to their deposition in the myelin sheath.
The incorporation of 32-P into MBPs and the turnover rates of MBP phosphates were studied in vivo in developmentally-related

Microfluidic devices are widely used for cell-based analysis. There are always needs to develop simpler, more effective and/or less costly devices than the existing ones for this application. A simple microfluidic device has been fabricated and tested for studying chemotaxis of macrophages in this study. The device was made of polydimethylsiloxane bound to a cell culture dish. It consisted of a millimeter-sized cavum and two arrays of straight channels of 5 um in width and 6um height and about two millimeters in length. The channels connected the cavum, in which a chemoattractant was loade

Abstract:
Human replication protein A (RPA) is an eukaryotic single-stranded DNA binding protein directly involved in a variety of DNA metabolic pathways including replication, recombination, DNA damage checkpoints and signaling, as well as all DNA repair pathways. This project presents 2 novel roles of RPA in the cellular response to DNA damage. The first elucidates the regulation of RPA and p53 interaction by DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK), ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) and ATM- and Rad3-related (ATR) in homologous recombination (HR). We propose a stochastic, decentralized algorithm for the self-assembly of a group of modular robots into a geometric shape. The method is inspired by chemical kinetics simulations, particularly, the Gillespie algorithm [1, 2] that is widely used in biochemistry, and is specifically designed for modules with dynamic constraints, such as the XBot [3]. The most important feature of our algorithm is that all modules are identical and all decision making is local. Individual modules decide how to move based only on information available to them and their neighbors and the geometric, kinematic and d

Urokinase was discovered in the late nineteenth century, as an enzymatic principle in urine, that initiates the dissolution of blood clots. The basis of this phenomenon was recognized more than fifty years ago as the activation of plasminogen, the precursor of a tryptic protease, then known as profibrinolysin. Despite this long history, detailed data on the biochemistry of plasminogen activation have only become available recently. Urokinase (now designated urokinase-type plasminogen activator : u-PA) is synthesized and secreted as a single chain polypeptide (Mr-: 53,000) by many cell types. S

Background: The teaching of the subject “Biochemical Basis of Human Nutrition” of the Degree in Biochemistry is based on the premise that students apply the knowledge acquired in previous courses concerning biochemistry and metabolism. However, for many topics covered in this subject, not rigorously application of this knowledge has been detected, existing influences derived from non-expert information available in the media. To a large extent, this problem lies in the fact that nutrition is a topic widely covered in the media, although often in a generalized, incomplete and not very rigorous
