Abstract:
Lately, basic school pupils have performed poorly in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) as well as in their end of term examinations and this necessitated an enquiry into the phenomenon. The study used the cross-sectional study design. The sample size was 195. The study collected data using a questionnaire. Data analysis involved using descriptive statistics. The study found that largely pupils from academically performing and nonacademically performing schools have similar perceptions about causes of poor academic performance. Again, the combined effect of home and school environmental factors emerged as the major contributor to poor academic performance. The study recommends that providing a conducive home environment for the pupils, tackling pupil and teacher related factors, would help to ensure that poor academic performance is a thing of the past.

Abstract:
Background. Ghana over the years strived to improve contraceptive services for young people through various policies and programs. Despite these efforts, contraceptive use among young people remains a challenge. In this study, contraceptive use among basic school pupils in a Ghanaian municipality was explored to inform policy and program decisions. Methods. The research design was a cross-sectional and mixed-method survey involving four hundred and twenty-seven (427) respondents randomly selected from four hundred and eleven (411) basic schools (102 from private and 309 from public basic schools) within Effutu Municipality of Ghana. Results. Basic school pupils in Ghana are generally sexually active but have high unmet needs for modern contraception due to sociocultural barriers, stigma, and misconceptions. Awareness and use are however more prevalent among junior high school pupils compared to those at the primary levels. Pupils who received contraceptive education from parents/guardians were, however, more likely to use modern contraceptives consistently than their counterparts who do not. Conclusions. Because young people in basic schools are becoming sexually active, there is a need for formalized contraceptive education in basic schools for correct information and education.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this study, the sporting activity of Hungarian school pupils is investigated with a focus on regional differences. The objective of the paper is to answer the following questions: Are there regional differences in pupils’ sporting activity, and, if yes, what is their relationship with the socio-cultural background of the pupils and the infrastructural and staffing conditions of schools? Has the 2012 introduction of daily physical education had a different effect on pupils’ leisure-time sporting activity in disadvantaged and affluent regions? Can the trends in the sporting activity of pupils be characterized as convergent or divergent since the introduction of daily physical education? The paper is based on an extensive study that relies on the most comprehensive database on physical education in schools, the National Assessment of Basic Competencies (NABC). The present study statistically analyzed eighth-grade pupil and school data from the 2010 and 2014 NABC. The results present the regional differences in pupils’ participation in sporting activity, their recent modification, and the main reasons behind the changes. In conclusion, the authors state that social, economic, and cultural inequalities are not clearly reflected in the sporting activity of students; however, certain data still call attention to the need to examine regional differences.

Abstract:
Normative rules of standard Serbian language are acquired during primary and secondary education through curriculum demands of Serbian language instruction, which takes place in three fields: grammar, orthography and culture of expression. Topic of interest in this paper is the quality of written expression of 6th and 7th grade pupils, in the context of all three fields specified to be mastered by the curriculum of Serbian language. Research comprised 148 primary school pupils from Belgrade. Linguistic analysis of spontaneously created written text was performed, in the conditions where it was not explicitly demanded form the pupil to write correctly. The results indicate that the majority of pupils make spelling and grammatical errors, meeting the condition for the basic level of mastering the knowledge in Serbian language according to the standards specified for the end of compulsory education. In addition to this, a considerable majority of pupils has a satisfactory level of culture of written expression. Pupils more often make spelling than grammatical errors. Seventh grade pupils are better than sixth grade pupils with respect to adhering to grammar rules and according to culture of written expression, while the mark in Serbian language and general school achievement of pupils correlate only with the degree of adhering to the orthographic rules. It was concluded that not only individual programs of support for pupils who make more errors are necessary, but also launching national projects for the development of linguistic competence of the young in Serbia.

Abstract:
Worldwide, quality education is a platform for social and personal development. In recent times, pupils in basic schools in Nandom Municipality seem not to acquire critical learning skills and consequently are underperforming. This paper investigates the interrelated and multi-dimensional factors affecting quality education in basic schools in the Nandom Municipality. Through the system andhuman capital theories, the paper draws a link between the various kinds of educational inputs pupils receive, the processing of such inputs and their outcomes, which reflect in their academic performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). The study employed a mixed research methods design. Cluster sampling technique and purposive sampling technique were used to selectrespondents. The study found that many pupils are not acquiring foundational knowledge in Literacy and Mathematics as reflected in the BECE performance due to inadequate educational resources, poor school management and supervision, and family socio-economic background factors. The study concludes that the quest for quality education for pupils would continue to be illusive unless thefundamentals underpinning quality education such as school resources and management are improved. It is recommended that government provides adequate educational resources for schools and reinforces the decentralisation concept of school management.

Abstract:
Grade 4 pupils got a low MPS score of 11.11 % in the Mathematics pre-test conducted at Banlic Elementary School Division of Calamba, Laguna. As an intervention, the researchers developed Group Dynamics Courseware (GDC) that aimed at enhancing the basic Mathematical skills of the pupil-respondents. The effectiveness of the Group Dynamic Courseware (GDC) was checked through a pre-test and post-test written assessment. The result revealed a mean difference between the pre-test and post-test results of -10.87, which means a significant increase in the academic performance of the pupils after the integration of the courseware. Furthermore, t Stat of the pre and post-test was -14.022 > 2.015 critical value with forty-four (44) degrees of freedom and a .000 level of significance. Thus, this directly implies that the Null hypothesis is rejected; therefore, there is a significant difference in the academic performance of the pupil respondents after the integration of Group Dynamic Courseware. As supported by the pupils’ reflection, data revealed that the Group Dynamic Courseware is Highly Effective regarding instruction and pupils' activities. The researchers concluded that GDC in Mathematics had a significant impact on the pupils’ academic performance. Pupils were motivated and engaged in hands-on activities, collaborate with the groups to accomplish an essential task within the prescribed time.

Abstract:
The present study aims at understanding how students from the fourth grade solve mathematical tasks associated with the division operation. In this context, I defined the following questions: (i) What are the strategies used by students in solving division problems? and ( ii ) What difficulties affect students in solving division problems? The theoretical framework integrates three key themes for this study: to learn mathematics with understanding, the teacher's role in learning mathematics and learning division. The study follows a qualitative and interpretive methodology, and has four students from a class of fourth grade as participants. An intervention was organized in a class of fourth grade, and it consisted in a set of four sequences of tasks proposed to students in the context of the classroom. In order to characterize their resolution strategies and their difficulties, four students were selected. The analysis of the strategies used by the four selected students and the difficulties they manifested when they solve tasks related to the division operation show that: (i) the resolution of the proposed tasks depends on the knowledge that every student has of the four operations, (ii) the students use a variety of strategies; (iii) there are students who use more than one strategy in the same task. The results show also that the difficulties manifested by students exist because they are unaware of the inverse relationship between multiplication and division and using successive subtraction to solve tasks associated with the division.

My diploma thesis focuses on including students from foreign countries in the first grade of primary school and problems related to these questions. It deals with Czech and foreign educational systems, which could help teachers to understand different approaches of parents from foreign countries and their children to education. This thesis explains multicultural differences, which could support better communication with students from foreign countries and their parents as well. This work offers possibilities of subvention of children from foreign countries in the process of including in the Czech educational system. On the basis of research it is obvious, that students from foreign countries are mostly successfully adapted to the educational system. Rarely there are problems with language boundaries or social and emotional development. Teachers consider admission of a student from a foreign country as a benefit but they often point out that it also means a harder work for them. In case of some difficulties teachers often cooperate with non-profit organisation Meta.

Abstract:
Occurrence of Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) has recently become quite frequent. Even though the number of experts dealing with this issue is increasing and there is a lot of professional literature available, the numbers of children abused and neglected are on increase. Traumas and pathological behaviour, which children experience in their families, are often carried over to adulthood and new families in the form of behavioural patterns. Basic school teachers, who spend substantial part of the day with children in the classes, play an important role not only in prevention, but also in detecting CAN cases. The objective of the diploma thesis was to observe the level of awareness among teachers regarding CAN and related issues and to find out whether they know what to do in case a child is suspected of being abused or neglected. Also, it was aimed at learning whether the awareness is influenced by microregion the teachers live in and respondents? age. The hypotheses were established to observe whether the teachers of basic schools in Jindřichův Hradec have better awareness of the issues relating to CAN than the teachers of basic schools in Třeboň, and whether the teachers of basic schools in Jindřichův Hradec have better awareness of the issues relating to CAN than the teachers of basic schools in Dačice. Next hypothesis dealt with whether basic school teachers under 40 years of age demonstrate better CAN awareness than teachers above 40 years of age. A quantitative research using the method of interview and technique of questionnaire was used to verify the hypotheses. The research corpus comprised of teachers of basic schools in the microregions of Dačice, Jindřichův Hradec and Třeboň. The finite corpus comprised of 193 respondents. The teachers of basic schools in the microregion of Jindřichův Hradec did not demonstrate better awareness of the issues relating to CAN than the teachers of basic schools the microregions of Třeboň and Dačice. Also, the teachers under 40 years of age did not demonstrate better awareness of the issues at hand than the teachers above 40 years of age. Analysis of the outcomes retrieved from the performed research did not confirm validity of the hypotheses H1, H2 and H3. The outcomes of the thesis imply that awareness of the basic school teachers, who were included in the research corpora in the given microregions, regarding the issues relating to CAN do not relate either to given microregions, where teachers work, or the age of the respondents. In general, respondents showed substantial awareness of CAN. It should be noted that CAN is very serious social problem and each society should pay proper attention to it.

Abstract:
This chapter presents issues concerning the right to wear or display religious symbols. As highlighted by the Special Rapporteur’s mandate practice, the main challenge in implementing such a right consists of protecting both the right of a person to voluntarily wear religious symbols as well as the right of a person not to be forced by States or non-State actors to wear such religious symbols. The circumstances of each situation must be considered on a case-by-case basis, taking into account all human rights aspects that may be at stake. This chapter discusses the mandate practice on the issue of wearing religious symbols by employees, police officers, university students, and pupils at public schools, teachers, and university lecturers, as well as the imposition of dress codes by States or non-State actors. The jurisprudence and reports by Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures have provided useful guidance on the regulation of religious symbols.

Abstract:
This chapter contextualizes and provides a translation of the Rāmāyaṇa Saṃkṣēpam, a concise summary of the Ramayana story, which serves as a training manual for a Kutiyattam artist preparing for the stage. It is taught by the guru to the disciple during the earliest stage of Kutiyattam training. Each of the five active schools of Kutiyattam in Kerala uses its own abridged version of the story to initiate pupils into an extended multiphase training of the performance form through gesture and facial expression. Performed in a seated posture, the Rāmāyaṇa Saṃkṣēpam demonstrates episodes in the Ramayana story with a focus on specific characters and a gamut of emotions which provide the basic vocabulary of Kutiyattam performance. The summary that is translated here is sourced from a handwritten text in Malayalam belonging to the Nepathya School in Moozhikkulam, Kerala.

Abstract:
This article presents a study that has examined the factors that come into play when “kulturskolen” sets its timetable for teaching. The findings indicate that kulturskolen must relate to internal considerations such as aspects concerning cooperation on pupils, teachers, localities and locations, but also external considerations such as political documents and interpretation of the Norwegian Education Act. To discuss the complexity that emerges in the analyzes, we look at the data material in the light of the philosophers Deleuze and Guattari (1988) and Rosi Braidotti (2013). We argue that the complexity taken into account when scheduling timetables is describing a certain understanding of kulturskolen as an organization. Kulturskolen is understood as a rhizome, and the complexity propels the school forward in constant evolution. This complexity is also important when kulturskolen is to collaborate with others. If kulturskolen is to collaborate well with compulsory schools, the complexity presents some challenges. Where kulturskolen can be described as a web of various influencial factors, we find compulsory schools better regulated and perhaps more linear, with clear requirements for learning goals and skills in the curriculum for basic education (Kunnskapsdepartementet, 2017). We believe there is a missed opportunity for collaboration when seeing kulturskolen in a rhizomatic context.

Abstract:
Organisations like OECD, IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) and the EU are increasingly involved in the production of transnational data. They function as key agencies for changing education and lifelong learning policy, promoting human capital approaches, and ‘governing by data’. I consider their growing role in assessing the efficiency of education and training systems. Particularly important in their organisational strategies are large-scale international performance surveys for school-age pupils, such as OECD’s PISA and IEA’s TIMSS. PISA for Development is addressing the problem that, in low income countries, not all 15 year olds can be surveyed at school. PIAAC, the Project for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies, has so far reported results in 33 countries, in 2013 and 2016. It focuses on three domains considered basic for adults in industrial and ‘knowledge’ economies: namely, literacy, numeracy, and problem solving in technology-rich environments, and on attitudes to and reported use of such skills. It uses electronic administration as a default, complex sampling designs, and statistical modelling to estimate the adult’s skill levels. I raise methodological issues relevant to the valid interpretation of such surveys and locate them in general policy developments, including globalisation.

Abstract:
This paper examines the context of Geoffrey of Vinsauf’s Poetria nova and of its manuscripts and commentaries in medieval and Renaissance Italy. It is well known that, in Italy, grammar (Latin language and literature) was the concern of elementary and mainly secondary schools, whereas rhetoric was primarily a university subject (although basic introductory rhetoric also figured at the end of the secondary-school curriculum). There is little direct (and scant indirect) indication that Poetria nova was taught in Italian universities, but abundant evidence that it was used in schools. Such a school (as opposed to university) context suggests that Poetria nova was primarily used in teaching grammar, not rhetoric, in medieval and Renaissance Italy. The most important use of the text was teaching prose composition: how to vary sentences beyond the simplest wording and structure of subject-verb-predicate (suppositum-appositum) initially learned by grammar pupils, i.e. moving from ordo naturalis to ordo artificialis. Marjorie Curry Woods has written, «although there is growing evidence that the Poetria nova was used to teach the composition of prose, and especially, letters, throughout Europe, it is almost always copied with verse texts, often classical works, in Italian manuscripts, which suggests that it was also used there to teach the interpretation of literary texts». But there is little sign that Geoffrey of Vinsauf was cited in Italian literary manuscripts during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries: in my study of manuscript schoolbooks preserved in Florentine libraries, there are 98 in which authorities are explicitly cited. Vergil tops the list, cited in 35 manuscripts, followed by Cicero (and ps. Cicero) in 32, Ovid in 29, Seneca (and ps. Seneca) in 27, Lucan in 16, Valerius Maximus in 15, Aristotle (and ps. Aristotle) in 14, Horace in 13, and so on. In contrast Geoffrey of Vinsauf was cited by name in only one manuscript.

Abstract:
Considering the importance of the family in bringing up and preparing a child for school education, there is a need for research to learn about the values and skills shaped in the family home that will help the child in a successful school start and in adapting to the classroom environment. The theoretical considerations contained in the article on the upbringing of a child in the family and preparation for school were obtained on the basis of a literature review on the subject. Empirical data from the research was obtained using the diagnostic survey method using a proprietary research tool with a four-point Likert scale, i.e. a survey addressed to parents of first-grade pupils attending several primary schools in the Biała Podlaska poviat (N = 91). The conducted research shows that in some children there were observed difficulties in establishing contacts, which can be assumed as a consequence of learning in a remote or hybrid form. Most parents are aware that they are responsible for bringing up a child and preparing him/ her for the role of a pupil.

Abstract:
This article shows the results obtained from the creation of some educational cards for primary school pupils on the topic of the food waste prevention. The collaboration between designers and experts in the educational field was fundamental for this project: we combined the communicative and design skills of the designer with the didactics knowledge of the educators. The activities have been created on the basis of the experiential methodology, the pupils feeling themselves the protagonist of the activities, combining the traditional educational activities, also trough cross-learning of good ecological practices. The proposed activities explore the life cycle of an aliment from when it is purchased by the consumer until it is disposed of, analysing in which stages the consumer wastes food. The exercises were created to understand how to avoid or reduce food waste in those specific phases. The result of the project is composed of two different books containing the educational cards, one for teachers and families with basic information on exercises and the other one for students containing the exercises. The final objective of the educational cards is to sensitize students and adults around them on the food waste problem.

Abstract:
When solving certain problems in chemistry, it is necessary for pupils to master not only the basic curriculum of this subject, but also to have mathematical skills. In the Czech curriculum documents for grammar schools (called gymnázium), mathematics is divided into the topics of argumentation and verification, number and variable, working with data, combinatorics, probability, dependence and functional relations, and geometry. Knowledge from these areas is then also used in solving chemical tasks, such as calculations in chemistry, determining the geometry of molecules or analysing data from tables and graphs. It can be assumed that mathematical literacy is key to successfully solving selected tasks in chemistry. This assumption was verified in a controlled interview with 5 grammar school graduates who achieved different learning outcomes in chemistry and mathematics. The students solved four constructed chemistry tasks using mathematical literacy, while think aloud method was used.

Abstract:
As the global pandemic of COVID-19 spreads enormously, educational institutions were forced to close down in most countries, affecting 91% of pupils and causing massive disruption to the education sector. In Indonesia, 62, 5 million students from pre-primary to higher education are forced to shift from conventional learning to a complete move into e-Learning. This study sought to explore students' readiness to cope with online learning both in urban and rural areas of Indonesia and to find the relation whether socio-economic factors during pandemic affect their e-learning readiness. The theory underpinning the study was the e-Learning Readiness theory which measures eight dimensions: human resource, financial, technological, equipment, content, psychological, sociological, and environmental readiness. An online survey was conducted, and a total of 1.260 million students in urban and 846 students in rural areas participated in the study. The data were analyzed using multiple regression and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). This study reveals that students in urban areas are categorized as ready, but they need improvements in several aspects with the readiness index 3, 47. In contrast, students are not ready in rural areas and need several improvements with index 3,01. The study also highlights that basic IT skills competencies are critical for the preparedness of e-learning and should be taught to students. Future studies could analyze whether ICT training will significantly impact their perceives and acceptance of students' e-learning readiness, especially in rural areas, after training has been conducted.

The state of Slovak education is influenced by several negative factors. In terms of human capital, we have seen the decline of pupils for demographic reasons and lack of interest in the work of teachers. This paper aims to evaluate the efficiency of secondary education on the example of selected secondary schools. The main method of the paper is multicriteria analysis. The subject of research is the efficiency of selected secondary schools. The 10 Business Academies attended by pupils aged 15-19 years and established in the Banská Bystrica and Žilina self-governing regions will be the subject of research. For the analysis we use panel data collected for the school years 2013/2014 - 2017/2018. The contribution of the paper is to create an evaluation of the efficiency of the surveyed schools and to propose solutions for schools that achieved below-average results. The findings may serve as a basis for assessing the efficiency of the Business Academies for comparison with competitors, as well as for the founders of these secondary schools.

At daily basis school principals need to balance between needs and wishes of different stakeholders. As the most important stakeholder stands out pupils from which is expected to perform at high level all the time. Another very important stakeholders are teachers which (often) are not motivated enough (financially, emotionally, socially) to give the best in the classrooms. Also, there are parents which expect that their children are exposed to best knowledge; government who expect that school system in general is at internationally competitive level; and also, companies who wishes to have people / labor force who know what to do when faced with problems. To be able to satisfied all parties involved, school principals need to juggle between them and at the same time ensure that school, as an organization, is function immaculately. Our paper focus on school principals and how marketing and management knowledge can help in juggling between the stakeholders. Context of our paper is Croatia – country that had good primary and secondary school systems but by entering EU and exposing to different kind of practice and demands, needed to adopt them. In that new environment business, and especially marketing and management knowledge, become crucial for school principals.

Abstract:
This article addresses the topic of conditional parenting, and it focuses on analyzing the relationship between parenting and the school activity of the student at the level of primary education. Conditional parenting, which provides the child with conditional love and self-esteem, it stands out by: focusing on the child's behavior, considering that human nature is negative and parental love is a privilege that must be earned, also being the adept of punishments and rewards. Conditional love entails the parent's desire to have an obedient child, obedience being the basis of control. `How could an obedient and conditional loved child develop competencies for the future? How well will he meets the demands of today's school or how will he relate to the faculty? These are the questions that have guided the approach of the whole mixed type research, that has been carried out over a period of half a year, using the following methods: questionnaire based survey and focus group method. Through this research, conclusions were drawn regarding conditional parenting and its influence on school activity of the pupil in the primary cycle. Starting from the interpretation of the research results, it was highlighted that the relationships between children and parents based on safety and unconditional love have contributed to the harmonious development of the child and to the skills for the future, through school.
