Changes in land use and water use can greatly impact the cycling of water and water-borne substances. Increased redistribution of river water to irrigated fields can cause enhanced evapotranspiration and decreased river discharge. The largest source of nonpoint pollution is storm water runoff, which includes pollutants such as sediment, nutrients, metals, microorganisms, and organic compounds. Sediment is of particular importance because many pollutants are readily 5 adsorbed onto particles. In the Lake Tahoe basin, sediment is also significant because of its direct contribution to clarity attenuation. The two-year study (2002-2004) examined three watersheds in Delaware County for biotic integrity, habitat quality, and stream water quality parameters. Twenty-two sites were selected to gain a perspective on agricultural, urban, and wooded landscape influences in order to locate and implement Best Management Practices (BMPs).
