The goals of this study were to better improve preexisting geologic surface maps of the area and to better understand subsurface structural relationships. Upper Devonian (Frasnian) stromatoporoid and coral buildups in the Alberta Basin are among the most important hydrocarbon reservoirs in Western Canada. The sub-Middle Jurassic unconformity exhumed at Swift Reservoir, in the Rocky Mountain thrust belt of Montana, exposes structures that call for a re-evaluation of the deformation history at this locale. The unconformity separates Late Mississippian Madison Group carbonate (~340 Ma) from the transgressive basal sandstone of the Middle Jurassic (Bajocian-Bathonian) Sawtooth Formation (~170 Ma). Illitization in the Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin is characterized by random, a mixture of random and ordered, R1-ordered, and R $>$ 1-ordered illite/smectite (I/S). Proportions of I-layers increase with depth, while the dominant I/S type changes in that order. Illitization in offshore wells is generally more advanced than onshore because of higher geothermal gradients. This thesis examines the controls on gas production from a Cretaceous sandstone deposit located within the Deep Basin of Alberta, Canada. By integrating core, wireline log, 3-D seismic, petrophysical, pressure and production data, we show that the best production comes from permeable chert-rich shoreface and beachface sandstones separated laterally and cyclically by tighter quartzose sandstones. The three-dimensional thermal maturity pattern has been investigated and the hydrocarbon generation potential assessed for the Permian and Triassic sequences of the southern Bowen and northern Gunnedah Basins and the lower part of the overlying Jurassic Cretaceous Surat Basin sequence in northern New South Wales. An oil-source rock correlation also has been investigated in the Gunnedah Basin. Vitrinite reflectance measurements were conducted on 256 samples from 28 boreholes.
