Abstract:
When field-dug, balled-and-burlapped trees are planted to the landscape, several options exist relative to wire basket modification or alteration. New wire basket alteration research has been initiated due to considerable controversy that surrounds some of the alteration options, and to limited prior research specifically addressing this issue. To guide this research, and to determine what currently occurs in the tree care industry, surveys of manufacturers of wire baskets, and of landscape contractors and arborists who plant trees, were conducted. Summaries of those surveys are presented.

Abstract:
Many new vegetative annuals are available in the floriculture market today. Their growth habits may be trailing or vigorous and more conducive to hanging basket or container garden culture. Today's gardeners are living busy lives and housing is sometimes confined, with little land on which to garden. These factors all contribute to the popularity of hanging baskets and container gardens. Whereas container garden trials are more common in industry, few universities have added container gardens and hanging baskets to their trial gardens. The objective of the hanging basket and container garden trials at Univ. of Tennessee (UT) initiated in Summer 1999 was to demonstrate and promote this timely trend to commercial growers, landscapers, and the public. An attractive brick walkway and wooden arbor were built by a UT landscape construction class to display the containers and hanging baskets. Several challenges had to be met: funding the purchase of expensive containers; planting and placing the heavy containers in the garden; combining plants within the containers; grouping containers together; labeling plants within the containers; displaying the hanging baskets; maintenance and pruning; and most of all, keeping the containers watered throughout the summer. The color wheel proved to be a useful tool for grouping plants and containers. A handout was developed to guide visitors through the container garden. Despite the challenges, the container garden and hanging basket trials proved to be a successful demonstration and were popular among visitors.

Abstract:
AbstractSelf-heating in packed paniculate that is exothermically reactive is a major cause of fire and explosion in the powder industry. This study is focused on part of the Auckland development of a mathematical model dealing with this hazardous process in industry using milk powder as an example. Milk powder is a primary powdered food product around the world. An update of the detailed mathematical model is given here, and predictions are made using the model to simulate the basket-heating behaviour of a milk powder in the laboratory (so the model can thus be validated). Basket heating in an oven is a standard laboratory technique for measuring the exothermic reactivity of a solid material. After a favorable comparison with the laboratory results, several aspects of basket-heating were investigated with a view to further improving the technique. Firstly, the model was used to explore the effect of elevated ambient humidity and initial sample water content upon the heating process in the basket. Secondly, the model was used to explore the cross over phenomenon which is related to a novel procedure for measuring activation energy and exothermicity (that is, the Crossing-Point-Temperature (CPT) method, which is a new version of the basket heating technique). The predictions together with the experimental evidence show that the reaction kinetics obtained using the Heat Release (HR) method (another version of the basket heating technique well published in the literature) may not be correct, especially for those measured at elevated oven temperatures and for larger basket sizes. Thirdly, simulations were performed to illustrate that the CPT phenomenon does not just occur at the center of the basket but also occurs everywhere else in the sample. This can become a significant advantage for further development of the CPT method in terms of reducing experimental duration and improving reproducibility.

Modern IT systems collect detailed data on each activity, transaction, forum entry, conversation and many other areas. The availability of large data volumes in the business, industry and research fields opens up new opportunities for the empirical verification of various economic theories and laws. The analysis of big datasets in turn allows us to look at many issues from a new point of view and see the dependencies that are otherwise difficult to derive. In this paper, we propose a new measure for dependencies between goods in market basket data. The introduced measure was inspired by the well-known microeconomic concept of complementarity. Due to its similar properties to those of complementarity, the new measure was called basket complementarity (b-complementarity). B-complementarity not only measures the strength of dependencies between goods but also measures the direction of these dependencies. The values of the proposed measure can be relatively easily calculated using market basket data. This paper also presents a simple example illustrating this new concept, areas of possible application (e.g., in e-commerce) and preliminary results of searching for goods that meet the criteria of basket complementarity in real market basket data.

Abstract In this paper analyzes the problem of the dynamics of income and expenditure of households in Albania. Analyzing costs in general, spending on food in particular, both connected with a range of other indicators of welfare, with per capita income, expenses for the basket of goods, according to its elements and structure. Survey basket expenditure according to regions of Albania. Analyzed per capita income, expenses basket compared with countries in the region, Europe and the world. The goal is: to extract an accurate conclusion, the place at which ranks Albania in these indicators. What to do in the future, in order to emerge from this negative situation. The conclusions drawn from the analysis are: Albania ranks last places of the world, the indicator of per capita income and expenditure of households. Ranked in first countries in the region and in Europe for the indication of the percentage of expenditure on food and non-alcoholic drinks to the total cost of items in the basket. This situation has come as a result of lower rates of growth of its economy. It recommended changes in the structure of GDP in terms of growth of light industry and food industry extraction and processing, etc. By developing these branches will grow faster GDP and national income, and consequently will increase per capita income. Methods used are: methods of analysis and synthesis, methods of description and comparison, statistical methods etc.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The economic organisation of Maya societies is still hotly debated because it is closely related to the différent definitions of the political organisations during the classic period (250-950 AD). This work attempts to shed light on the matter by analyzing the lithic material from two sites : Rio Bec and Calakmul,as well as by making a comparative study of the entire body of available data in the lowlands. Two different production contexts appear to have been in use, which coincide with the différences in spatial and political orgaénisation that have been observed for some time in the lowlands. Whereas the workshops in the north were found in smamm, modest residential units outsides the cities, the only concentrations of flint and obsidian waste in the south were to be found in special deposits, above royal tombs or under steles. These massive flake deposits appear to be workshop dumps, and are always composed of the same production process waste. Their close association with royal or elite contexts allows us to believe that they indicate a controlled production. There would thus be two different economic organisations : a decentralized one in the north, and another more controlled one in the south. Finally, obsidian waste is exclusively found in special deposits in the south, which indicates that some cities in that region somehow controlled the production and/ or the distribution of that material

Abstract:
Failure to collect reimbursement because of changing regulations negatively impacts hospital profitability. A multiple case study approach was used to explore the successful strategies billing managers employed to collect reimbursement for all legitimate Medicare claims. The target population for this study included 5 hospital billing managers from 3 organizations in the Northern New Jersey region. The complexity theory was used as a framework for assessing changing Medicare regulations and how the managers adapted to them. The data collection process for this study involved gathering data from participant interviews, documentation from the organizations of the participants, and government documented regulations and manuals. The logical and sequential order of data analysis for this study embraced Yin's 5-steps data analysis that includes compiling data, disassembling data, reassembling data, interpreting the data, and concluding. The successful strategies billing managers used that emerged as themes were remaining up to date with Medicare changing compliance regulations; enhancing communication with staff, multiple departments, and Medicare; and adopting a robust billing system and other systems that compliment billing. The implications of this study for social change include the potential to ensure access to patient care for benefiting families and communities through the sharing of successful strategies for Medicare claims.

Challenged by turbulent environment, firms are driven to make extra efforts in order tothrive. Technology intelligence, as a vector of knowledge of innovation dynamics, constitutes aninstrument at the firms’ disposal to help steer their economic activities. The aim of this thesis, funded by Groupe PSA, is to participate in the enhancement of theimplementation of technology intelligence within large industrial groups. The first part of this Ph.D. thesis aims at making technology intelligence more comprehensible inorder to reinforce its purposes in the innovation process of firms. To this end, we will call upon theoretical elements from the resources and competencies based view ofthe firm in order to answer three questions: Why is the understanding of the external environment ofthe firm a necessity? What is its place within the organization of the firm? What is the significance oftechnological intelligence for strategic and operational management of innovation?By putting technology intelligence into practice, the second part of this thesis focuses on improvingcollection methods of data required for the analysis of the external environment of the firm. Moreprecisely, the intent is not only to determine the informational benefits of patent data and the seldomused financial data, but also to make practical recommendations for their exploitation

Abstract:
Universities in Zimbabwe have universally adopted a full-year integrated undergraduate student workplace-based learning pedagogy following the precedent set in 1991 by one pioneering university, the National University of Science and Technology. In this explorative study I analyse participants’ views, reflections and understanding of how the full-year model of workplace-based learning enhances quality academic practices and impacts on short, medium and long-term visions and opportunities for students and other stakeholders. I employed the embedded concurrent mixed methods research design (Creswell&Clark, 2007) using interviews with lecturers, university administrators and industry supervisors, as well as open-ended questions in three matched versions of a questionnaire to students, lecturers and industry supervisors respectively. The same questionnaire provided quantitative data that was statistically analysed. Interviews were conducted with 24 participants from the university under study, industry and other universities, while 363 university students, 40 NUST lecturers and 34 industry supervisors responded to the respective questionnaires. Students, lecturers and industry supervisors concurred on the coherence between industry experiences and university learning, the beneficial experiences at the workplace, and the relevance of those experiences to society, confirming the expressed view that industry-based learning promoted quality learning and teaching, and enabled students to become work-ready. However there were perceptions of inadequate student supervision and assessment, unsatisfactory student welfare safeguards, inadequate research enthusiasm among lecturers, and the lack of involvement of the whole spectrum of industry categories. There was an underlying regard for lifelong learning enabling societal transformation into the increasingly dominant industrialised culture. Lecturers indicated an appreciation for a holistic orientation to teaching and learning (Taylor, 2009), and were inclined towards adopting the hermeneutic approach to education (Danner, 2002). It is recommended, among other things, to revitalise effective practices through staff development efforts, increasing student knowledge and empowerment, and strengthening collaborative platforms between the university and its industry partners. Chief among the suggestions for future research is the understanding and promotion of student welfare during their placement in the workplaces.

Morlay, Alexandra. "Développement d'une méthode de détection multiplexe de bactéries pathogènes en matrice alimentaire se basant sur l'imagerie par résonance des plasmons de surface (SPRi)." Thesis, Université Grenoble Alpes (ComUE), 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016GREAV078.

Full text
Abstract:
The presence of pathogenic micro-organisms in foodstuff is a major concern for health safety. Regulations impose, in most cases, the research of low levels of these bacteria. Although reference methods are simple, they are time-consuming and can require several days before obtaining results. This is why one of the major challenges in food hygiene science is the development of sensitive and rapid methods, for the detection of one or more pathogens. These new technologies aim to decrease the occurrence of foodborne infections, while improving both the shelf life of food products and industrial production costs (long storage times, recalls …).In this context, the development of an alternative method has been carried out in this work, using a biosensor with a transduction based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Such optical technology offers multiple benefits: ease-of-use, real-time analysis, label-free process… Proofs of concept for the use of this technology in basic conditions, for the detection of model bacteria, have been described in the literature, mostly using antibodies as receptors, but the full operation in "real" conditions encountered in industrial facilities still has to be tested and optimizedThis manuscript thus describes the detection of foodborne pathogenic bacteria playing a major role in terms of prevalence and/or severity of the caused infection, whether Gram positive or negative. The production of efficient antibodies was optimized, resulting in polyclonal antibodies sensitive and specific for multiple bacterial genera. Dynamics of bacterial growths were analysed by SPR in an effort to identify the main factors having an impact on the detection. High resolution SPR was used for a better understanding of reactions occurring at the surface of the biosensor. These studies lead to the development of a system capable of multiplex detection of low bacterial inoculum in food samples (lettuce and powdered infant formula) within less than 24 hours

Laepple, Eberhard Sebastian. "Exploring project collaboration systems in the building industry." Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/4360.

Abstract:
The use of Web-Based-Collaboration-Systems (WBCS) continues to grow as part of information technology development in the Architecture-Engineering-Construction (AEC) industry. WBCS provide different media channels to support collaboration across geographical distributed teams. However, many companies are still hesitant to integrate WBCS. This research provides an understanding of how WBCS are used in practice. Most distinctively, it obtained practice data from several major US architecture firms and examined about 30,000 transactions produced during actual design and planning projects as practicing architects, engineers and consultants used WBCS. The study investigated what information was used and exchanged among participants during the different design stages. This was related to the different media channels of WBCS. The raw project data has been coded and transformed into secondary data through computer-supported content analysis. Based upon categories from previous literature, such as communication, coordination and design theories, the data has been analyzed for sender, receiver, channel and content of information transmitted. The content has been characterized into work tasks, information handling behavior and design activities. Additional interviews with industry professionals produced information that had not been documented through WBCS and that corroborated the analytical findings. The combination of theory, quantitative, and qualitative analysis has been synthesized into a portrait of WBCS usage that was validated through triangulation. The analysis of digital records of design communication from practice through content analysis is a new research methodology in AEC. The evidence supporting design methods theory shows the changes in tasks and information handling in regards to the project phases. It indicates that the most frequent loops of design activity are Evaluation- Analysis-Synthesis and Evaluation-Synthesis-Evaluation. It documents the actual usage of WBCS based on descriptive statistics and Markov models. WBCS was used primarily as a document repository and calendaring tool. The remote team members used it more frequently than centrally located participants. The study shows the limitations of WBCS: none of the verbal communication was captured. More significant, the entire email exchange took place outside the WBCS. WBCS was used very extensively, if the implementation of the system supported the organizational structure and vice versa.

Abstract:
Abstract A pressure pulp screen is a machine used in the pulp and paper industry to remove and class cellulose fibres in paper pulp. It involves an inner perforated cylindrical basket which receives the pulp under pressure, an inner rotor with profiled blades used to clear the holes or slits of the basket, and an outer cylindrical shell. The noise radiated by the outer shell is characterized by discrete frequencies in mid- and high frequency (1–4 kHz). A preliminary study has shown that the radiated noise is due to the vibration of the perforated basket under the moving load of the rotor. This vibration is transmitted to the outer shell through various paths which were analyzed and classified. An analytical model of the vibroacoustic behavior of a cylindrical shell under a circumferentially moving load was used to establish various rotating speed regimes with respect to the vibration and sound radiation of the shell. It was shown that a circumferential modulation of the load (corresponding to the effect of holes or slits on the inner basket) leads to theoretical noise spectra similar to measured data. On the practical front, the model was used to identify significant design parameters with respect to the noise of the machine. The paths of energy transmission from the basket to the outer shell were studied and various noise reduction approaches have been investigated.

Abstract:
The tracking of prices in monitored supermarkets across Trinidad and Tobago is done by the Ministry of Trade and Industry. This initiative involves data collection every month for 118 grocery items (“standard basket”). The task of identifying which supermarkets are non-conforming in their pricing schemes is linked to the “total basket price” (total cost of the 118 items). An outlier is defined as any datapoint that varies significantly from all other observations in a dataset. In this paper, it is any supermarket that exceeds this total basket price by 5%. The aim of this research was twofold, with the first goal being to employ feature selection methods to reduce the number of items being collected. The second goal was to create a logistic regression learning model that can identify whether supermarkets are non-conforming, given their pricing information. The dataset contained 692 datapoints and out of these, only eight (8) were classified as outliers. This is an imbalanced dataset. Resampling by SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique) was used to synthetically generate data for the training set. Seven (7) feature selection methods were also investigated and their results discussed and analysed. In doing this, a more balanced dataset was achieved which was tested and validated on the unseen data (testing set). The metrics indicated that a subset of these features can be collected whilst still maintaining the supermarket outliers.

Abstract:
The gold which is the most important metal known since seven thousand years and is located in the first place among the precious metals protects being the saving mean. Gold increasingly preferred in industry due to the technological purposes, and because of its mentioned specifications creates the significant price fluctuations within its specific market structure. In this study, the basic national factors effecting the gold market in Turkey were tested in terms of empiric. Weighted average gold prices used as a dependent variable; whereas basket exchange rate, BIST 100 index, deposit interest rate and inflation rate used as an independent variable. The data related to these variables were dealed on a monthly basis, between the years of January 1999- December 2014. Taking the advantage of the e-views package program, multiple regression model was performed in the analysis. In the final result of the analysis, the impacts of all independent variables but BIST 100 index values, on gold market prices were statistically found to be significant.

Abstract:
The evaluation of spent nuclear fuel storage casks and transportation packages under impact loading is an important safety topic that is reviewed as part of cask and package certification by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Explicit dynamic finite element models of full systems are increasingly common in industry for determining structural integrity during hypothetical drop accidents. Full cask and package model results are also used as the loading basis for single fuel pin impact models, which evaluate the response of fuel cladding under drop conditions. In this paper, a simplified package system is evaluated to illustrate several important structural dynamic phenomena, including the effect of gaps between components, the difference in local response at various points on a package during impact, and the effect of modeling various simplified representations of the basket and fuel assemblies. This paper focuses on the package impact analysis, and how loading conditions for a subsequent fuel assembly or fuel cladding analysis can be extracted.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Predictive analytics has a wide range of applications in many industries operating on a routine basis. The oil industry is in a state of constant evolution, with events in 2020 being the highlight of volatility and unpredictability. The main objectives of this paper showcase that improved predictive analytics method can serve as the foundation within the decision-making process, that leads to the goal of accuracy planning and cost-effectiveness in the oil and gas industry. The initial step of the improved methodology is utilizing data, statistical algorithms, and machine learning techniques to build a financial model capturing essential trends. The budget is forecasted based on the basket of weighted factors, including historical data, request of capital expenditure, operating cost, and other factors. The core is at the reviews of portfolio optimization. It focuses on rebalancing cash priorities to reduce capital and operating expenditures driven by new technology, cost savings, and project schedule revision. The vital step is the separation of operating costs from capital investment. A periodical review is imperative to capture the ad-hoc significant events. Utilizing the above improved predictive analytical methods helps to increase the accuracy of planning and budgeting. It is also time-efficient for the decision-maker to identify the focused area or benchmark with peers based on the trend derived from predictive analysis. Meanwhile, the scorecard and subject matter experts review ensures that the selected tasks are strategically aligned with the organization's short-term target and long-term goals. Portfolio optimization reviews contribute to substantial savings in both capital and operational spending. Periodical reviews can timely identify the deviation, include those variances in the module, and provide a practical year-end forecast. Changes do not happen over the night. It is time-efficient and cost-effective to apply improved predictive analytics during the decision-making process to make financial planning and budget based on the trend and a series of well-defined factors. Those factors should be qualified as well as quantified after internal reviews.

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence is said to be transforming the global economy and society in what some dub the “fourth industrial revolution.” This data brief analyzes media representations of AI and the alignments, or misalignments, with job postings that include the AI-related skills needed to make AI a practical reality. This potential distortion is important as the U.S. Congress places an increasing emphasis on AI. If government funds are shifted away from other areas of science and technology, based partly on the representations that leaders and the public are exposed to in the media, it is important to understand how those representations align with real jobs across the country.
