Abstract:
ESPN’s 22 basketball-themed documentaries are popular and influential sources for students and fans interested in basketball history. I offer close readings of two films, There’s No Place Like Home and The Fab Five, to shed light on how they (and to some degree the corpus as a whole) portray basketball history, reflect on the historiographical task of portraying the past, and affectively engage viewers to adopt certain stances with respect to the past and its portrayal. There’s No Place Like Home invites viewers to share in a fantasy of basketball as a decontextualized static idea whose history can be possessed. By contrast, The Fab Five challenges viewers to view basketball history as contested terrain where conflicting power vectors of language, culture, and society intersect.

Abstract:
Abstract “Our Life Out of the Dungeon” examines the life and career of Robert L. Vaughan, the legendary and longtime head basketball coach at Elizabeth City State University, an Historically Black University, and explores the racial and cultural politics of Black college basketball in the twentieth-century United States. Using oral history and Vaughan's words, this article moves Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Black college basketball to the forefront of African American history and sport history, providing a window onto the world of college basketball that existed on the other side of the color line and in the decades after segregation. African Americans at HBCUs revolutionized basketball and transformed the sport into a cultural staple that shaped Black people, communities, and institutions. Through Vaughan's words and experiences, we can understand the struggles and successes and the political and cultural language of Black college basketball within the context of what I call the “politics of Black athletic emancipation”—a Black athletic agenda that stood in opposition to racism and white supremacy and reverberated the ethos of self-determination and collective striving of African Americans who demanded the right to be free and the right to play basketball.

Abstract:
Abstract Context: Despite the high rate of lower limb injuries in basketball players, studies of the dominant-limb effect in elite athletes often neglect injury history. Objective: To determine lower limb explosive-strength asymmetries in professional basketball players compared with junior basketball players and control participants. Design: Cohort study. Setting: Academic medical institution. Patients or Other Participants: 15 professional basketball players, 10 junior basketball players, and 20 healthy men. Main Outcome Measure(s): We performed an isokinetic examination to evaluate the knee extensor (Ext) and flexor (Fl) concentric peak torque at 60°·s−1 and 240°·s−1 and (Fl only) eccentric peak torque at 30°·s−1 and 120°·s−1. Functional evaluation included countermovement jump, countermovement jump with arms, 10-m sprint, single-leg drop jump, and single-leg, 10-second continuous jumping. Variables were compared among groups using analysis of variance or a generalized linear mixed model for bilateral variables. Results: The 2 groups of basketball players demonstrated better isokinetic and functional performances than the control group did. No differences in functional or relative isokinetic variables were noted between professional and junior basketball players. Professional players with a history of knee injury failed to reach normal knee extensor strength at 60°·s−1. Knee Ext (60°·s−1) and Fl (eccentric 120°·s−1) torque values as well as 10-second continuous jumping scores were higher in those professional players without a history of knee injury than those with such a history. Compared with the group without a history of knee injury, the group with a history of knee injury maintained leg asymmetry ratios greater than 10% for almost all isokinetic variables and more than 15% for unilateral functional variables. Conclusions: The relative isokinetic and functional performances of professional basketball players were similar to those of junior players, with no dominant-side effect. A history of knee injury in the professional athlete, however, was reflected in bilateral isokinetic and functional asymmetries and should be considered in future studies of explosive strength.

Abstract:
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the static and dynamic balance in basketball students with an ankle injury history. Methods: Subjects of this study were 36 elementary school basketball male students who participated in this study purposefully and voluntarily. Subjects were divided into two groups of 18 people with an ankle injury and the control group without ankle injury. To measure the static balance from the stork test and the dynamic balance from the star test was used. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Shapiro-Wilk test and independent t-test) were used to analyze the results. Results: There was a significant difference between the static balance of basketball students and the control group (P=0.001), but no significant difference was found between basketball studentschr('39') dynamic balance with ankle injuries and the control group (P=0.0887). Conclusion: Based on research results, it can be concluded that lower limb injuries, especially ankle injuries they can influence postural control and static balance of basketball students and caused some functional disability. Also recommended coaches during the sports era of basketball players to design specific exercises to strengthen ankle muscles and ligaments and use static balance exercises not to witness this type of injury.

Abstract:
Injuries can occur as a result of various activities, which of them is a sport. In 2017, basketball was a sport that produced the highest prevalence of injury incidence in the United States at 15.77%. Athletes who have ankle sprain are 20-40% more likely to experience chronic ankle instability. This study analyzed the relationship between gender, history of ankle sprain, and ankle stability with ankle sprain status in basketball athletes of Universitas Airlangga Surabaya. This study was analytical-observational research using a cross-sectional design. The research population was basketball athletes who were members of the basketball club of Universitas Airlangga, and finally there were 23 respondents selected as the research samples. The sample selection used the accidental sampling technique. The results of chi-square test (α = 0.05) indicate that there was a relationship between the previous history of ankle sprain (p = 0.002; RR = 9.1) and ankle stability with ankle sprain status (p = 0.013; RR = 6.), but gender had no relationship with ankle sprain status (p = 0.435; RR = 1.6). It concludes that the history of ankle sprain injury and ankle stability were related to ankle sprain status, but gender was not related to it. Abstract:
The Toronto Raptors’ 2019 National Basketball Association (NBA) championship win, a first for the franchise and for a Canadian team, “turned hockey country into basketball nation” ( CBC Radio 2020 ). Canadians’ burgeoning embrace of the team and the sport seemed to point to a growing celebration of Blackness within the nation. However, we problematize the 2019 championship win to tell a more expansive story about how sport and national myths conceal truths about race and belonging in Canada. We explore two particular cases—the “We The North” campaign and the media coverage of Raptors superfan Nav Bhatia—to highlight the contradictory ways that the Raptors coverage mobilized symbols of the North and multiculturalism to present the team as quintessentially Canadian and rebrand basketball for Canadian audiences. We further explore how these stark contradictions manifest in the racialized policing of basketball courts in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). These cases demonstrate that the celebrations of the Raptors and basketball not only continued to police racialized bodies but also ensured that their inclusion was contingent on the maintenance of the status quo.

Abstract Charlotte Lewis died prematurely at age fifty-two. Lewis is not a household name in high school or intercollegiate basketball, yet she was a pioneer in many respects on the playground, in a high school gymnasium, a collegiate fieldhouse, the 1976 Olympics, and the Women’s Basketball League. Interviews with Lewis, her coaches, and her teammates provide the primary resources for this paper. As one of four African-American women on the inaugural women’s Olympic basketball team, as well as one of only seventy-six women to ever wear the Team USA basketball jersey, interest in Lewis should be more intense. Lewis deserves a louder, unified voice in how the history of women’s basketball in Illinois and the nation are remembered. Few have experienced the breadth of competition and the spectrum of success lived by Charlotte Lewis.

Abstract:
The NBA is the acronym for the National Basketball Association, and is also the four major professional sports organizations in the United States, including the baseball league, the football league, the hockey league and the basketball league, with the strongest leadership, the highest level of globalization and the greatest international influence. This paper explains the connection between basketball and the economy, such as the broadcasting of basketball games and how it drives the formation and growth of the market for related products such as sneakers and jerseys, as well as analyzing how the NBA is profitable and, using the NBA as a template, whether Chinese basketball needs to learn from foreign countries. Through a search and review of relevant literature, this paper identifies strategic suggestions that the CBA, as an emerging local Chinese basketball league, can draw from the development history of the NBA.

Abstract:
The current study seeks to understand how was the development of basketball practice in Porto Alegre, since the emergence in the clubs until the organization of the Gaucha Basketball Federation. Under the theoretical and methodological reference of Cultural History, this sport history version, it is held in printed sources such as newspapers, magazines, sports almanacs, books and interviews. The literature review and documentary analysis of historical sources underpinned the context of basketball practice in the city of Porto Alegre. It talks about the introduction of basketball practice at the clubs in the mid-1920s, where it slowly began to have fans, and expanded to the public squares, coming to claim the sport scene in Porto Alegre in the following decades with the organization of their own entity in the early 1950s. As a result, the study identified that the creation of Gaucha Basketball Federation in 1952 represented a milestone for the better organization of sports competitions in town promoting and acting on the spread of basketball clubs. Moreover, the public squares were important spaces for basketball practice, becoming an alternative place for athletes who did not play in clubs. On the other hand, the location of a significant number of social and sports clubs with basketball teams in the 1930s and 1940s, reflects the strong presence of this sport in the city. Probably, this was one of the factors that favored the federative organization of basketball.

Job, Christiane. "Envisioning basketball: a socio-biographical investigation of Ruth Wilson - one of western Canada's sporting pioneers." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/277.

Full text
Abstract:
The history of women’s basketball in Canada has been influenced by key individuals who have challenged systemic barriers and social mores demanding appropriate female behaviors and activities. In this study I examine the sporting contributions of Vancouverite Ruth Wilson, whose involvements in the sport of women’s basketball from the mid 1930s through the 1960s was significant. Though several studies have highlighted the importance of women’s basketball in a North American context (Hall, 2002; Cahn, 1994; Kidd, 1996; Hult and Trekell, 1991), to date there has not been a significant examination of the development of basketball for women and its early advocates in western Canada. Celebrating heroines of sport is not a straightforward matter. The concept of the heroic, as Hargreaves points out, must be examined through an analysis of the struggles and achievements of many women whose stories have been excluded or forgotten from previous accounts of women’s sports and female heroism (Hargreaves, 2000). Thus my account of Ruth Wilson’s contributions provides a unique case study of one womans persistent and wide ranging efforts to change the ways in which girls and women participated in a sport which brought them freedom to compete, professional opportunities and in some cases, national status. This study employs several methodological techniques. Data was collected through primary and secondary document analysis in conjunction with semi-structured open ended interviews. Ruth Wilson’s contributions have been highlighted through the narratives of female sportswomen whom she mentored, assisted, befriended and coached and who are still living today to provide their memories about her role in changing the landscape of women’s basketball in Canada.

Abstract:
This case study examines a Philadelphia suburban school district, Lower Merion, and its failures to substantively integrate African-American students in the 21st century. Through a close analysis of the high school's basketball program, largely funded and popularized by Lower Merion alumnus Kobe Bryant, this case study exposes how extracurricular programs structure unequal expectations for African-American students in otherwise "excellent" public schools. By using oral history and local archival materials, Winning off the Court examines an all too common issue across modern American suburbia: public schools failing their minority populations while still purporting to be successful on a national scale.

Abstract:
Chucky is the product of an interracial union; his mother is Navajo while his father is Black and Mexican. Along with his three siblings, he was placed in the custody of his maternal aunt, Isabelle, because of a very tragic incident. At the age of five, he witnessed his father murder his mother. Despite all the turmoil, Chucky is remarkably well adjusted and level-headed. Unlike many of his peers, he has managed to stay out of any serious trouble. He has chosen to respond to heartache with humor, and he has developed a reputation as a prankster. With his gregarious personality, it is no surprise that Chucky is among the most popular students in his high school, which is no doubt buttressed by his standing as a start basketball player. Along with rap music, basketball is his chief coping mechanism for dealing with his adolescent angst. This chapter introduces Chucky.

Abstract:
In the context of the study of the Cold War, based on Yugoslav archival materials, relevant domestic and foreign literature, as well as examples from the Soviet, Yugoslav and Philippine press, the paper examines the degree by which politics and mutual relations affect international sports and basketball in particular. Various types of state systems supported sports during the 20th century, especially international sports competitions that were perceived as a training ground for the affirmation of a particular nation or a political system. In this respect, sport was used as a suggestive tool, that is, as a diplomatic tool for spreading a political message or for antagonizing rivals. By joining the International Olympic Committee in the first years of the Cold War, the USSR saw a chance and the possibility of breaking through the Iron Curtain, which in the case of basketball threatened the previous American dominance. Basketball depicted all the complexity of Cold War diplomacy, serving as a tool of soft power to spread certain values around the world and to strengthen the image of opposing blocs in an ideological war. Basketball games attracted global attention, reflecting on the field the rivalry and symbolic battle between the superpowers, but also providing space for overcoming geopolitical tensions. Therefore, three very specific World Championships in basketball (Chile 1959, Philippines 1962 and 1978) were analyzed that created political situations which exceeded the limits of sports ethics. All three case studies, each in their own way, will give an answer to what extent sport was shaped by politics, whether it affected the winning of medals or, if so, in what way.

Abstract:
Abstract On a street comer in Los Angeles at the height of the riots that rocked the city for three days in April 1992, a line of peaceful sidewalk protesters passed a young white man kneeling in the street. His hands were wrapped around a basketball, his face was creased with pain. Another young man, black, left the line of protesters, put his hands, too, on the basketball, and sought for a moment “to console him.” It was a gesture of empathy remarkable in the midst of any human conflict. A long time would have to pass before Los Angeles and the United States were “consoled” for the deaths, the billion-dollar property destruction, and the wounded wounding rage which this event deposited on the pages of recent American history. Among other things, Los Angeles demonstrated that in modem urban America a majority of rioters are not necessarily black, nor do all of them come from the poorest of the poor. As for protests against injustice, Hispanic and Asian Americans can mount them, too. As for reason to despise one’s neighbors, middle-class white Americans can find that, too, whether they indulge in looting or in contempt for looters. We are a nation heading toward new levels of pluralism in our politics, our economy, and our culture. We are the world’s largest immigrant nation. Traditionally we assume that immigrants start at the bottom of the social status hierarchy.

Abstract:
The inspiration for the creation of this app stemmed from the deeply rooted history of eating disorders in sports, particularly in sports that emphasize appearance and muscularity which often includes gymnastics, figure skating, dance, and diving [1]. All three sports require rapid rotation in the air which automatically results in the necessity of a more stringent weight requirement. Eating disorders can also be aggravated by sports who focus on individual performances rather than team-oriented like basketball or soccer [5]. According to research, up to thirteen percent of all athletes have, or are currently suffering from a form of eating disorder such as anorexia [2] and bulimia [3]. In the National Collegiate Athletic Association, it is estimated that up to sixteen percent of male athletes and forty-five percent of female athletes have been diagnosed with an eating disorder.
