Abstract:
The current study seeks to understand how was the development of basketball practice in Porto Alegre, since the emergence in the clubs until the organization of the Gaucha Basketball Federation. Under the theoretical and methodological reference of Cultural History, this sport history version, it is held in printed sources such as newspapers, magazines, sports almanacs, books and interviews. The literature review and documentary analysis of historical sources underpinned the context of basketball practice in the city of Porto Alegre. It talks about the introduction of basketball practice at the clubs in the mid-1920s, where it slowly began to have fans, and expanded to the public squares, coming to claim the sport scene in Porto Alegre in the following decades with the organization of their own entity in the early 1950s. As a result, the study identified that the creation of Gaucha Basketball Federation in 1952 represented a milestone for the better organization of sports competitions in town promoting and acting on the spread of basketball clubs. Moreover, the public squares were important spaces for basketball practice, becoming an alternative place for athletes who did not play in clubs. On the other hand, the location of a significant number of social and sports clubs with basketball teams in the 1930s and 1940s, reflects the strong presence of this sport in the city. Probably, this was one of the factors that favored the federative organization of basketball.

Abstract:
The history of women’s basketball in Canada has been influenced by key individuals who have challenged systemic barriers and social mores demanding appropriate female behaviors and activities. In this study I examine the sporting contributions of Vancouverite Ruth Wilson, whose involvements in the sport of women’s basketball from the mid 1930s through the 1960s was significant. Though several studies have highlighted the importance of women’s basketball in a North American context (Hall, 2002; Cahn, 1994; Kidd, 1996; Hult and Trekell, 1991), to date there has not been a significant examination of the development of basketball for women and its early advocates in western Canada. Celebrating heroines of sport is not a straightforward matter. The concept of the heroic, as Hargreaves points out, must be examined through an analysis of the struggles and achievements of many women whose stories have been excluded or forgotten from previous accounts of women’s sports and female heroism (Hargreaves, 2000). Thus my account of Ruth Wilson’s contributions provides a unique case study of one womans persistent and wide ranging efforts to change the ways in which girls and women participated in a sport which brought them freedom to compete, professional opportunities and in some cases, national status. This study employs several methodological techniques. Data was collected through primary and secondary document analysis in conjunction with semi-structured open ended interviews. Ruth Wilson’s contributions have been highlighted through the narratives of female sportswomen whom she mentored, assisted, befriended and coached and who are still living today to provide their memories about her role in changing the landscape of women’s basketball in Canada.

Abstract:
This case study examines a Philadelphia suburban school district, Lower Merion, and its failures to substantively integrate African-American students in the 21st century. Through a close analysis of the high school's basketball program, largely funded and popularized by Lower Merion alumnus Kobe Bryant, this case study exposes how extracurricular programs structure unequal expectations for African-American students in otherwise "excellent" public schools. By using oral history and local archival materials, Winning off the Court examines an all too common issue across modern American suburbia: public schools failing their minority populations while still purporting to be successful on a national scale.

Abstract:
The aim of our diploma thesis is to identify and evaluate the impact of rules changes in 2010 on success of two-point shooting and three-point shooting between selected Czech and foreign players taking part in National Basketball League who have met with our specified conditions in examined seasons 2009/10 and 2010/11. There are following methods used in the very research in the empirical part: Student´s paired t-test, Two-sample F-test, Student´s unpaired t-test of equality of variances and Size of effect. The results of these tests has statistically confirmed our hypotheses H1 and H2 it means decreasing of two-point shooting success in season 2010/11 for all examined players and reducing of success at three-point throws between players with Czech nationality. On the contrary, it has not confirmed the hypothesis H3, thus increasing of three-point shooting success in season 2010/11 between foreign players. Substantively, I consider as a essential result the 20,1% impact of the rules changes on success of three-point shooting for players of Czech nationality.

In 1964, Muncie Central High School got the “death penalty” at the hands of the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s (IHSAA) new commissioner, Phil N. Eskew, after post-game brawling at a boys basketball game led to a broader investigation of the entire program. In the closing moments of the game, a Muncie Central opponent was bloodied by an inbound pass to the face and fans erupted in violence, swarming the floor. The ensuing investigation revealed racial tensions, issues of sexual mores, political discord, and deep problems in the web of interrelationships that make up the phenomenon of Hoosier Hysteria. After a closed-door hearing and two days of deliberations, Eskew and the IHSAA Board of Control announced their decision, and the punishment prescribed made front page headlines across the state and beyond.

Abstract:
Despite a long history of participation in sports, women have yet to gain equal access to this male-dominated realm. The national sports culture continues to regard them as marginal, if not invisible. For more than a century, women athletes have struggled against a subordinate status based on rigid definitions of female sexuality, an emphasis on white middle-class standards of beauty, and restrictive cultural expectations of motherhood. This dissertation, however, reveals a vital story of feminist women who have consistently stretched the boundaries of gender and have actively carved out their own identities as women, athletes, and mothers while playing an integral role in the development of sports. Drawing on oral history, archival materials, and a wide range of other sources, I provide a comparative analysis of women's experiences playing basketball and Roller Derby. These two sports have included women from their outset and at different times both challenged society's restrictions on women's femininity, sexuality, and physical abilities. One of my major objectives is to explore and explain the tension between women's representation and agency, between cultural constructs and women's lives, between images of women and their individual identities. Both women and men struggle for self-definition in the world they inhabit, and they often surmount formidable obstacles on the path to change not only themselves but also the ideals against which they measure themselves. In a culture that champions individualism, women "sweat" their identities because they want to be themselves, yet realize that self-definition is still shaped by a powerful set of cultural ideals and pressures about what it means to be male or female, man or woman, boy or girl. While these women sporting pioneers pushed their way into the public limelight, they worked to prove that athleticism could in fact be a part of the female identity, even while that identity was continually in flux. But until American society is ready to accept women as viable athletes, realize that athleticism can be a feminine and masculine quality, and allow women to play multiple roles, women will continue to sweat their femininity.

The study aims to explore the process of Taiwan’s basketball sport’s development history, particularly focusing on how the basketball development spanning from the Japanese occupation era to the post-war Republic government era has exerted a significant important in Taiwan’s sports development. With which, the study has adopted the historical sociology’s research method by taking to Taiwan’s social and cultural structure to explore the development process of Taiwan’s basketball sport, and adopted the human geology concept to conduct dialog and discussions on Taiwan’s basketball sport. With Taiwan’s modern sport and school physical education already emerged prior to 1895, and after the Japanese occupation era, sports had steadfastly take root in Taiwan’s society and culture. During the Japanese occupation era, the basketball sport was referred to as the cage ball, which began to emerge at school sporting events, and middle schools and higher often operate a cage ball department, while interschool basketball games were often staged among the schools. Since 1945, as drastic change rocked Taiwan’s basketball sport realm, an influx of renowned basketball players and avid followers began to arrive in Taiwan in a relative short time, accelerating the basketball sport to be a synonym of physical education and sports then. Moreover, with a number of basketball courts built successively in post-war Taiwan, particularly so was how the joined forces’ basketball court then had played the role of solidifying the patriotism of the overseas Chinese, and provided an emotional sanctuary to all veterans who were forced to abandon home and evacuate to Taiwan. The conclusions the study has derived are as follows: During the Japanese occupation era, the basketball sport was introduced to the Taiwanese society hitching on the stage of school sports games, and soon took to a thriving development in middle and higher schools, while there were related sporting organizations in the society; on the other hand, the reason why the post-war Taiwan’s basketball sport was particularly prevalent could be attributed to how the sport rode along the political advantage of the joined forces, and the results of a long-term development of the basketball sport in the Mainland, which had accelerated the basketball sport to become a mainstream physical export in post-war Taiwan.
