Abstract:
The Bass–Serre theorem supplies generators and relations for a group of automorphisms of a tree. Recently K. S. Brown [2] has extended the result to produce a presentation for a group of automorphisms of a simply connected complex, the extra ingredient being relations which come from the 2-cells of the complex. Suppose G is the group, K the complex and L the 1-skeleton of K. Then an extension of π1(L) by G acts on the universal covering space of L (which is of course a tree) and Brown's technique is to apply the work of Bass and Serre to this action. Our aim is to give a direct elementary proo

Abstract For any reduced amalgamated free product C*-algebra (A, E) = (A1, E1) *D(A2, E2), we introduce and study a canonical ambient C*-algebra ΔT (A, E) of A which generalizes the crossed product arising from the canonical action of an amalgamated free product group on the compactification of the associated Bass–Serre tree. Using an explicit identification of ΔT (A, E) with a Cuntz–Pimsner algebra we prove two kinds of “amenability” results for ΔT (A, E); nuclearity and universality. As applications of our framework, we provide new conceptual, and simpler proofs of several known theorems on

Abstract:

Abstract:
We give a brief overview of Bass-Serre theory and introduce a method of adding a limit point to graphs of groups. We explore a basic example of this method, and find that while the fundamental theorem of Bass-Serre theory no longer applies in this case we still recover a group action on a covering space of sorts with a subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of our new base space with added limit point. We also quantify how much larger the fundamental group of a graph of groups becomes after this construction, and discuss the effects of adding and identifying together such limit points in
