Full textForeland basins develop in front of orogens by flexure of the lithosphere. When they initiate over a crust that has been affected by a previous tectonic event, structural and thermal inheritance have a fundamental role in their evolution and different sources may contribute to basin subsidence. The present work analyzes the impact of inheritance from a rifting event on a foreland basin, which develops while thermal reequilibration has not been achieved at the time of loading. The Aquitaine Basin is the Pyrenean retro-foreland basin that developed from Campanian to Miocene. The Pyrenean orogenesis follows an Aptian-Cenomanian rifting during which the continental crust is thinned and sub-continental mantle exhumed. The orogenesis starts only 10 Myr after the end of rifting. The effects of crustal inheritance due to rifting on the evolution of the basin are studied by analyzing crustal structures, flexural behavior of the European plate, and foreland succession distribution. The subsidence evolution of the basin is studied by the 1D backstripping technique using borehole data. Finally, inversion mechanisms of the European margin are studied by cross-section construction and restoration at crustal scale. This study helps to define the role of rift inheritance on the initiation and the evolution of a retro-foreland basin, as well as the relative role of subsidence sources and their variations in space and time. The present work also shows the strong relationship between the retro-foreland basin's history and both mechanism and the history and mechanisms of inversion of a hyper-extended margin

Full textInventory and analysis of incised valleys through the “rhodano-provencal” molassic basin (BMRP) results in re-examining the miocene sea submergence and the tectonic deformations of the alpine chain foreland basin. Three great fluviatile erosion stages have been characterized : between late Aquitanian and early Burdigalian, between late Burdigalian and early Langhian and early Tortonian. These Miocene networks who supply the platform and the slope of Lions Gulf provide some elements for a better geodynamic understanding of this area: in particular how the deceleration and the stop of the opening of the Lion Gulf interact with the alpine shortening. The marine Miocene invasions of the peri-alpine furrow are controlled by these successive fluviatile networks existence. The first fluviatile network filling is composed of bioclastic carbonates of “foramol” facies. A high frequency sequential model of an incised valleys complex is proposed. The identification of the three Miocene incised valleys networks allow a completely new BMRP geomorphological evolution analysis. The Aquitano-Burdigalian valleys are generally superimposed and encased in the Oligo-Aquitanian deposits in direct relation with the tectonic foreland basin morphostructural heritage and sign a regional large wavelength deformation reported to a compression stage of this field at the lower Miocene. The next networks are in quasi-conformity with the septentrional pyreneo-provencal structures. They are in relation with the activation of the folds and thrust. They sign a shorter wavelength folded deformation associated, for the late Burdigalian network, to a regional rising. Their superposition underlines the tectonic control perenniality. Their dismantling is the consequence of the folds and thrust activation causing not only depotcenters migration but also of the successive valleys networks whose deformation amplifies the digging

Full textThe palaeoflora of Late and Middle Jurassic of the Paris basin is documented by a set of rather important outcrops, relatively little know, containing fossils of every type, mainly imprints often without cuticle, sometime with, or otherwise silicification in flint nodules. Eight historic or new outcrops were studied, plus four isolated fossils, all dating from the Bathonian-Oxfordian interval and distributed on the whole Paris basin and its margins. Three deposits were studied in the eastern part of the basin, its Arc-en-Barrois (late Bathonian), Étrochey (early and middle Callovian), and Laignes (middle Callovian). They all belong to the archipelago of the Burgundian platform, whose islands are covered by a mixed xerophytes Brachyphyllum forest. The deposit of Auxey, situated to the south, close to the city of Beaune, dated of late Oxfordian shows on the contrary a flora of wet environments, rich in ferns. Two others outcrops were studied close to the seuil du Poitou, the late Callovian flora of Sauzé-Vaussais and Poitiers surroundings, rich in bennettitales, presumably corresponding to relatively open xeromorphic environments. Finally, two last deposits were studied in the west of the basin, on the oriental margin of the emerged Armorican massif, the flora of the late Bathonian of Mamers and Nonant-le-Pin. These two outcrops correspond to a coastal mixed Brachyphyllum forest, also in a xeromorphic environment. Thereby, the Paris basin presents from Bathonian to Callovian exclusively xerophytes floras, corresponding to rather closed paleoenvironments, as on the Burgundian platform, to on the contrary opened enough environments, as in Poitou. The flora of internal environments, far from coasts, are not known for this period. In late Oxfordian on the other hand, the flora of Auxey would indicate rather a certain moistering of the climate, although more ample data are necessary to confirm this interpretation

Full textThe scarcity of fresh water, arising from many factors, constitues a major source of conflicts among riparian states. This problem is particularly sensitive to legal and political relations as far as countries of the nile basin are concerned. The states of this river basin have not been able to establish a comprehensive approach to cooperation in order to solve those conflicts connected with the need to share water and its ressources. The idea of an integrated approach to development of shared water resources is rather doubtful in the nile basin. In this respect, it becomes necessary to examine those problems that hamper cooperation by resorting to the study of the contemporary legal instruments regulating the management of water resources shared by two or several states. The experience of cooperation between some riparian states could help in improving the existing structure of cooperation in the nile basin as well as all those relations that emanate from it

Full textThe Cariaco basin provide an ideal location to study the organic matter (OM) preservation processes in particular the natural sulfurization, since it has presented recurrent euxinic conditions along its history. To better understand the OM preservation processes, we have studied the varved sediments of Cariaco in a time interval of 130 ky. In this study, we have employed an artifact free method based on stepwise hydrolysis for the isolation of kerogen. This method permitted to obtain important amounts of monomeric carbohydrates, accounting for up to 3% of the total organic carbon. Those algal/bacterial-derived carbohydrates present a decrease with depth related to in situ degradation and/or incorporation to the macromolecular matrix. The investigation of the organic extracted biomarkers corroborate the authochtonous origin of the OM. Nevertheless, an important contribution of terrestrial OM was observed in the samples from glacials periods. The natural sulfurization process have an important role in the preservation of OM in Cariaco basin. The intramolecular sulfurization was revealed by the presence of free alkylthiophenes and thiolanes. Raney nickel desulfurization and kerogen pyrolysis also revealed intermolecular sulfurization. The natural sulfurization does not present a global increase in the time interval studied. This process respond to variations in climatic conditions, redox conditions in the water column and sediments and also to the reactivity and availability of the molecular precursors

Full textWe develop here a methodology to integrate the mineralogical record into a high resolution sequence stratigraphic framework realized in the Early Eocene Graus-Tremp-Ainsa Basin. Coupling stratigraphic with geochemical and mineralogical approaches allows us to unravel the effects of tectonics, climate, eustasy and diagenesis on basin architecture and mineralogy. An automated computed mineralogy is derived from whole-rock geochemical data, and calibrated against direct mineral quantifications (petrography, DRX, Qemscan, microprobe). It provides a basinscale view of mineral distribution, irrespective of the lithology. Diagenetic overprint and hydrodynamic sorting effects are evaluated first, then primary mineral distributions are reconstructed and ascribed to different types of sediment sources. We show that, at the million-year timescale, tectonics shape the architecture and the mineralogy of the deposits. Spatially distributed diagenesis and temporal and spatial changes in sediment sources reflect the competing effects of intrabasinal tectonics (local thrust displacements) versus basinscale flexural subsidence linked to the orogen uplift and loading. Tectonically-driven changes are also sensitive to higher frequency (100 ky) anomalic climatic events (PETM, ELMO, X-EVENT) leaving a mineralogical signal in clay fractions and environment deposits succession. The basinscale evolution displays two contrasting stages. During the Ilerdian to the lower Cuisian, a mixed carbonate ramp evolves to a set of deltaic fans of Northern (Pyrenean orogen) provenance delivering plutonic-dominated materials. Then, during the lower/mid Cuisian, they are overprinted by a large fluvial and deltaic system bringing recycled carbonates and siliciclastics sourced in the emerging eastern to southern sedimentary thrust sheets. Later on, the propagation of the Montsec thrust and its lateral ramp decouples the uplifted Graus-Tremp basin from the strongly subsiding Ainsa basin. These different subsidizing schemes are underlined diagenetic overprints diverge, with an extensive kaolinisation of the uppermost units in the Graus-Tremp Basin driven by meteoric fluid circulations, and a severe albitisation of sandstones in the Ainsa basin, coupled with the illitisation of smectites in the lutites and caused by deep basinal fluids

Full textFrancevillien Basin, located in south-eastern Gabon, consists of a column of five lithostratigraphic formations, starting from FA to FE. He is known around the world through these natural fission reactors (Oklo and Bangombé) and to its rich mineral resources in the FA and FB (Uranium and Manganese). The classically described successive lithofacies in FA reflect the evolution of fluvial environment to a tide-influenced delta environment. Marine environment, ranging from shoreface to upper offshore, characterizes the FB. New geochemical data show, oxygenation of the water column up to the upper offshore, large amounts of dissolved organic matter in Proterozoic seawater. These chemical conditions in the depositional environments are closely linked with the state of oxygenation of the atmosphere, will have major consequences in the history of this basin: the emergence of biomass, large colonial organisms; diversification of phyllosilicates (chemical weathering). The mineralogy of the clay fraction (< 2μm) in the FA formation shows a dominant illitic phase whose crystallinity increases towards the base of the series. It is characterized by the appearance of minerals interlayered illite/smectite regular (type R1) at the FA / FB transition, and irregular (type R0) at the top of the series. This trend highlights the different parageneses in the FA and FB formations, despite a low thickness variation and a general rate relatively low landfill. These parageneses indicate a higher intensity of diagenesis in the coarse facies with low organic matter (typical training FA) than for fine facies rich in organic matter (formation characteristic FB). All the results can be interpreted in terms of changes in a same diagenetic process controlled by the facies and the nature of pore fluids. This reinforces the hypothesis of a relatively low geothermal gradient compared to what has been commonly described in other basins of similar age. The presence of monazite overgrowths, late iron-rich chlorites associated with berthierine was used to estimate the temperatures of crystallization around 300° C in the upper FA. These results confirm the late circulation of hot fluids

Full textThe Arno river in Tuscany (Italy) is the unifying factor of a fairly coherent geomorphological zone. To the North of the river the Septentrional Apennines are medium-height Mountains forming secondary chains separated from each other by intramontane villafranchian basins. To the south of the Arno, the ranges are lower and the pliocene basins more extensive. Scanty morphological evidence remains to be found in the heavy flysch ranges. The outline of the Reno and the elbow of capture of the Bisenzio are what are left from an older southern outline of the main line of divide. The crestline of the higher summits transferred to the north-east of the present divide remains as evidence of an antecedence. The higher basins (Mugello, Casentino) are sharply cut out into pedogenised terraces with earlier fossil soils. The Valdarno is less eroded: the effluent from the Valdarno appeared at a later date. The Florence basin was the very last of all the Tuscan basins to have been created, and has been partially filled in: the plain takes precedence over the encircling hills. The Southern most basin, that of the Valdichiana, was the only one to have been touched by the pliocene transgression: it was joined to the hydrographic basin of the Arno only during historical times. The pliocene basins south of the Arno have been fragmented by postpliocene tectonics: ledges in tiers in the middle of the Elsa basin, graben of the Valdera. The neotectonics was also the cause of the fragmentation of the relief to the north of the lower Arno into a mosaic of tiny patches with low reliefs. The delta of the Arno, itself, is entirely the work of the river. On this foundation the current dynamics is at work, in a climate affected by altitude - it is humid - and by the propinquity of the mediterranean-it has a dry summer season. There are numerous types of earth movements apparent, accelerated by modern agricultural methods, and here erosion is still less advanced than in many basins of other Italian rivers

Full textThe sedimentary modification in form of synsedimentary slumping is a witness of long-term geodynamic evolution of a sedimentary basin. This study of the Vocontian Basin (South-East of France), in paleogeographic context of submarine valley, tried to highlight the role of the initial properties of sediment in the phenomenon of submarine sliding. Main part of accomplished works concerns limestone-marl alternations and their modifications (slumps) during Hauterivian, particularly in the region of Serres. The biostratigraphy of slumps was accomplished due to the abundance of ammonites. To characterize the original lithology of the slice affected by sliding, a representative composite section was constructed from different sections exempt from slumps. The correlation between this composite and the section of Serres-Montclus, followed by an interpretation at time, allowed to differentiate on one hand two types of the slided material (very marly alternation and alternation rich in limestone), and on the other hand to suggest that climatic changes cause a indirect condition favourable to the generation of slidings (cycles of Milankovitch). The heterogeneity of the slided mass and internal structures in slumps underlined a mechanism of disintegration by shearing in marly layers. However, the presence of intact blocks testifies an incomplete disintegration. An initial configuration of the affected slice was restored by a decompaction. Basic elements for a geomechanic modelling of the behaviour of a heterogeneous massif with limestone-marl alternation, were set up. .

Full textUntil recently, water was considered abundant and inexhaustible, and increased mobilization was the answer given to the increased needs related to the increase in human activity. Nevertheless, with the emergence of use conflicts, the technicist ideology has been called into question and has given way to more integrated models of management. IWRM and the establishment of basin organization have therefore become imperatives of good governance of the water sector, widely promoted by "international policy entrepreneurs". Morocco undertook a comprehensive reform of the water sector in 1995, based on these two principles, which led to the creation of a basin agency. Two decades later, the articulation of the legal and institutional framework of the sector seems inefficient. The constraints related to path dependencies and the institutional environment have, in fact, largely shaped the Agencies creating an important gap between the "Basin Agency Model" and its Moroccan translation. The analysis of the Agency's action in the Tensift Basin reveals that its power is being diluted in favor of other sectors that maintain their historic prerogatives over the resource. It is moreover retained at the central level, by the ministry of supervision. Facing the economic and political stakes that operate at the basin level, and which limit its fields of action, the Agency is forced to ‘laisser- aller’ attitude, which is in itself a form of demand management that allows to operate a 'natural selection' carries inequalities and social risks as well as increased environmental degradation

Full textThe geodynamic evolution of the Mediterranean area, especially in the Valencia and Adriatic basins, is strongly influenced by its ante-Neogene history. The localization of existing thresholds at that time, and their impact on the following tectono- sedimentary evolutions still remain largely unknown. In this work, we will try to reconstruct this evolution and better understand the part of these thresholds, in particular during the Messinian Erosional and Salinity Crisis (MESC, 5.96-5.32 Ma). We provide here a complete view of the Neogene sedimentary infilling for the both Valencia and Adriatic basins thanks to a compilation of seismic profiles correlated to industrial boreholes. Our results allow us to individualize the Valence-Provençal domain into three subbasins whose ages, subsidence and crustal nature differ. A new kinematic and geodynamic scenario for the Valencia and Neogene Algerian basins is proposed here. This segmentation provides also information about MESC. We highlight a fully incised-valley system whose length reaches more than 270 km, the latter associated with the development of several system tracts. Overall, these interpretations lets us look the Ebro basin connection paradox from a different angle. The Mesozoic Apulian-Gargano-Pelagosa composite threshold mainly control the Neogene sedimentation in the Adria domain and distinguishes two main depocenters. The propagating of the Albanid and Apennine deformation fronts control also the evolution of vertical movements and the sedimentation. Our results imply that the Messinian period corresponds to a major tectonic and/or kinematic reorganization phase within which the MSC is a superimposed event

Full textThe results summarized in this documents deal with the mediterranean low land Têt river management. The contributions of this work are divided into severals levels. 1) Design of a rain/flow model as a decision-making tool for predicting flows of extreme floods of the Têt river at Perpignan. We propose a model based on the Recurrent Neural Network introduced by Elman, able to predict the river flow at Perpignan, at the day d+1, and influent flow of both Perpignan and Canet WWTP, at day d+1. 2) Classifications of qualitative data, which are aggregate to the functionning of the Têt river and the two plants localized on the study area. This part of the work was done thanks to the Kohonen’s self organizing maps. This enables to highlight correlations between the river and the plant parameters. 3) A mass balance model development enables the quantification of the WWTP impacts on the river. These fundamental parameters, essential to make this study, are nitrogens, carbons and phosphates. 4) These parameters, essential for modelling, are very difficult to measure inline. So, we adapt the Kohonen model in order to complete missing values in the needed database containing these parameters

Full textThe Lesser Antilles result of the slow westward subduction of the North and South American plate under the Caribbean plate (2 cm / year). At the latitude of the Guadeloupe archipelago and ~ 150 km to the west of the deformation front, the fore-arc basin of Marie-Galante forms a perched basin tilted to the pit and limited to the East by a shoal, the Spur Karukéra. At this latitude, Marie-Galante basin dominates the accretionary prism of Barbados and faces wrinkle Tiburon sweeping the area from North to South from the late Miocene. The sedimentary fill Basin Marie-Galante shows active deformation since at least ~ 30 million years. The aim of the work is to reconstruct the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the basin to provide new constraints on the overall understanding of the frontal subduction zone Lesser Antilles. This work relies on multibeam bathymetry data and high-resolution seismic reflection multi-traces acquired during campaigns KaShallow program. This database, supplemented by lower resolution of previous campaigns seismic profiles, provides a pseudo-3D coverage and four scales of resolution of the entire basin. ROV sampling and targeted core provided 40 samples in the main seismic units. Petrological analysis and biostratigraphic dating allow paleoenvironmental reconstructions from the upper Paleogene up Actuel. Seismic interpretation multiscale shows a sedimentary basin reaching ~ 4,5s double (~ 4500-5625 m) on a substrate pre-structured magma. This basin consists of 5 main sedimentary units (E-1, E1, E2, E3 and E4) divided into 13 units bounded by discontinuities 14 surfaces. The sequential organization of seismic units allows to highlight sequences 10 deposits of third order (S-1 to S9). The biostratigraphic calibration of all sequences able to offer a tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Eocene basin to Present. Thus, we distinguish four normal fault systems associated with three phases of extensions that control the architectural and sedimentary evolution of the basin. 1 / A system N050 ± 10 ° E inherited assets from the upper Paleogene, which controls the overall pelvic tilt towards the SSE. He is responsible for the formation of the escarpment Désirade about 4500 m elevation. The first extension is interpreted as resulting from the fragmentation of the fore-arc in response to the increase in the radius of curvature of subduction. 2 / A system N130 ° -N150 ° E, structuring across the Spur Karukéra, which controls sediment from the Miocene and marks the first phase of transverse extension arc. 3 / A system N160 ° E ° -N180 which segments Basin Marie-Galante in a sub-basin to the west and the Spur Karukéra in the East. This second extension, generally perpendicular to the margin, is accompanied by subsidence and reversing the polarity of the basin in response to his switch to the pit, beginning during the Middle Miocene and is ongoing in the East the basin. This long-term evolution of the forearc, concurrent with the decline in volcanic arc to the west, is considered as resulting from a basal erosion of the top plate. 4 / A system N090 ± 10 ° later E is located in the center of the basin and controlling the development of neritic carbonate platforms on certain blocks heads, such as Marie-Galante. This latest extension, parallel to the arc occurs in the basin from the lower Pliocene. It is superimposed on the expansion plan perpendicular to the fore-arc and is interpreted as the accommodation of the partitioning of deformation in response to the increasing obliquity front subduction north

Full textThe continental organic matter deposited in the deep basins is little described and represents a definite interest for the petroleum industry. Understanding the sedimentary processes that allow the deposit and preservation of this organic material of terrestrial origin in the deep basins is fundamental. During the Palaeogene, a period of glacial transition to icehouse, the Mackenzie Delta, located in the Arctic Basin, receives and maintains continental organic matter from the continent. What is the stratigraphic and climatic context that made possible the export of continental organic matter? Initially, the sedimentary study of the basin showed a mixed mixture dominated by the fluviatile process, with less influence of the process of storms and tides. This model of facies associated with the study of the logs of wells available in the zone made it possible to propose a model of electrical appliances of the wells of the basin and to characterize the sedimentary sequences of the delta to evolve over time and to demonstrate its migration to Beginning of the Paleogene in response to the establishment of the Brooks and Rocky Ranges. Despite the contradictory biostratigraphic constraints that had to be re-evaluated and poor quality seismic data and strongly impacted by the contemporary deformation of the Brooks chain, it is possible to propose a stratigraphic and sedimentological division along two land-sea transects. Paleogeographic series of the Mackenzie Delta. The sedimentary study of the basin showed the presence of influence of the tidal process in the internal zone of the Arctic Basin. The common presence of pollen from Avicenna and Nypa showed the existence of a mangrove well established in the Arctic domain during the Palaeogene with associated temperatures of at least 18-20 ° C. The deposits of organic matter are in the Almost all of continental origin of the Mackenzie Delta. This organic matter is of two types: (1) deposits of coal deposited during the period when the mangrove develops and (2) deposits formed by association of plant debris and amorphous organic matter and deposited under reducing conditions under the water interface -sediment. These deposits of organic matter are the most important at the end of the prograding sequences in the facies of the deltaic plain. A positive correlation was found between the increase in OCD and the increase in detrital inputs in the delta, as well as between deposits of coal and illite. On the other hand, no correlation between the second type (organic debris + MO amoprhe) of organic matter and the clayey cortege could not be demonstrated. From the comparison of organic matter deposits in the Mackenzie Delta and Lomonosov Ridge, the sedimentation rate and anteriority appear to be key parameters in sedimentation conditions and especially in the preservation of organic matter according to l Oxygenation of the medium. Moreover, Lomonosov's Ride presents itself as a guest in a home where it is permitted to remain in semi-emerged position during the Paleogene

Full textOne of the most effective geodynamical processes creating sedimentary basins is the continental rifting. Investigations performed in deep magma-poor rifted margins showed that the crust can be extremely extended and associated with low-angle detachment faulting. Therefore, the tectono-sedimentary models developed for classical hemigrabens of the most proximal domains of the margins cannot be applied to the distal margins. Unfortunately, due to access issues, this evolution remains poorly understood. This is the aim of this study focused on two fossil analogues (Alps and Pyrenees). Palinspastic restoration helped to restore the post-rift architecture of this type of basins preserving their syn-rift sedimentary record. This study shows that supra-detachment basins are controlled by the detachment faults flooring rift-basins. They are bounded by structural elements resulting from the hangingwall delamination during active exhumation (allochthons or detachment breakaway blocks). A syn-rift trilogy evolution can be observed as: 1) Onset of exhumation, with the hangingwall rupture during the basin opening over the exhumed fault plane. Deposition of hangingwall-derived basal facies tract. 2) Widening of the basin accommodated by the upstream footwall exhumation controls a source change to footwall derived deposits. 3) Tectonic cessation through the basin leads to develop the post-tectonic sequence consisting of passive infilling. Because of the cessation of active exhumation as the engine of the syn-rift gravity flows along the fault, this sequence is strongly dependent of a potential incoming sediment flux and its efficiency compare to post-tectonic space accommodation

The equitable sharing of benefits in transboundary river basins is necessary to solve disputes among riparian countries and to reach a consensus on basin-wide development and management activities. Benefit-sharing arrangements must be collaboratively developed to be perceived not only as efficient, but also as equitable, and to be considered acceptable to all riparian countries. The current literature mainly describes what is meant by the term benefit sharing, in the context of transboundary river basins, and discusses this from a conceptual point of view. Practical, institutional arrangements that ensure maximum economic welfare, as well as collaboratively developed methods for encouraging the equitable sharing of benefits, are, however, not provided. The overall objective of this PhD project was to develop an institutional arrangement, that includes both water allocation policies and benefit-sharing mechanisms, to improve the sustainability of managing transboundary water resources and to encourage cooperation between riparian states. The methodology extends the traditional approach, which is based on highly constrained allocation policies, that merely complement existing management institutions, by efficiently allocating water resources and then equitably sharing the benefits derived from water use. This thesis details the institutional arrangement developed and, through three separate activities, the main components of the arrangement are analyzed. A river basin authority (RBA) is the operator of a market-based system, in which economically efficient allocation policies are identified and imposed on water users, who are charged for the water allocated to them. These charges are collected and redistributed, via a sharing rule specific to the river basin, to ensure equity among the water users. The Eastern Nile River Basin is used as the case study to illustrate the approach. There are important hydropower and agricultural sectors spread across three countries (Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia), and there is a long history of non-cooperation in this river basin. Current water allocation is based on colonial era bilateral agreements that designate Egypt and Sudan as the only beneficiaries of the Nile waters. Future cooperation is imperative, in this basin, to take advantage of hydropower potential in Ethiopia, and agriculture potential in Sudan, as well as to mitigate, as much as possible, the effects of climate change in the near future. Results reveal that the cooperative management of the Eastern Nile River Basin and its infrastructure would significantly increase the basin-wide economic benefits and lead to more efficient water allocation. The institutional arrangement ensures that water is withdrawn where it has the greatest value (efficient water allocation is established) and that upstream investments in low productivity projects are discouraged. The highest level of cooperation is effectuated through a supranational institution and all parties must agree on the definition of fairness in the sharing of benefits. The imposition of specific axioms, based on this agreedupon vision of fairness results in a unique solution for the distribution of economic benefits. A sharing rule developed with stakeholder input may be more acceptable because the definition of the rule is not in question, as would be the case if existing rules were applied with their inherent definitions of equity. Finally, overall results show that achieving trade-offs between efficiency and equity can occur when these two principles of water allocation are coupled to first maximize the benefits from water use and then reallocate these in an equitable manner.

Full textIn the Eastern Mediterranean, the South-Tethys paleo-margin experienced poly-phased rifting episodes during Paleozoic and Mesozoic times. This margin has been subsequently inverted by discontinuous events occurring since the Late Cretaceous as a consequence of the Africa-Eurasia convergence. The Cyrenaica margin (northeast Libya) has recorded these extensional and compressional events. It thus gives the opportunity to analyse these inversion and their possible causal links with events occurring along the plate boundary (i.e. within the Hellenic subduction). The adjacent Sirt Basin, follows an oblique direction, did not suffer the same deformation as Cyrenaica and has recorded a continuous subsidence since the Mesozoic.Offshore seismic data combined with well correlations have permitted us to investigate and discuss the interactions between Cyrenaica, Sirt Basin and the deeper domains (i.e. Ionian Basin). We were able to document the different rift episodes, better constrain the compressional events on Cyrenaica, observe characteristics of the architecture of the Sirt Basin and clarify part of its evolution. Finally we integrate this part of the margin, in the regional geodynamic frame of the East Mediterranean branch of the Neo-Tethys by discussing the timing and mechanism which led to its opening

Full textKarst is one of the most widespread aquifer formations in the worlds. Their exploitation provides fresh water to practically 25% of the global population. The high level of structure heterogeneity in these aquifers however makes them complex and their behavior is difficult to study, simulate and forecast.Artificial neural networks are machine learning models widely used in surface hydrology since the 90's thanks to their properties of parsimony and universal approximation. In this thesis, artificial neural networks are used to study karst aquifer behavior. Application is done in the Lez. This aquifer situated near Montpellier conurbation (400 000 inhabitants) provides fresh water for a large part of this population.First, a “classical” black box neural network is applied to simulate and forecast Lez spring discharge. A rainfall input selection method is proposed, using cross correlation analysis and cross validation method at the same time. Results show neural model efficiency in order to simulate and forecast the spring discharge of a complex karstic aquifer. The model was tested using two hydrologic cycles including the two most intense floods of the database. Hydrographs shows that neural model was able to extrapolate the maximum flood discharge of the learning database. Forecasting is satisfactory until a one-day horizon. In a second time, extraction of the knowledge data included in the black box is proposed. In order to constrain the model to give physically plausible solution, a priori knowledge about aquifer geology is included into the network architecture. KnoX (Knowledge eXtraction) method proposed in this study aims at extract geological zone contributions to the Lez spring and corresponding response times. The KnoX methodology was applied to a fictitious hydrosystem built using a model with controlled parameters, in particular contributions of subbasin to the outlet and lag time of each subbasin. This application permitted to validate the KnoX methodology. Results obtained on the Lez basin are satisfactory and agree with current knowledge about this hydrosystem. In addition, the KnoX methodology allows to refine this knowledge, in particular concerning delayed infiltration because of infiltration in perched aquifer and concerning Lez spring alimentation basin boundaries. Lastly the KnoX methodology is a generic methodology that can be applied on any basin with available discharge and rainfall data

Full textThis MSc thesis analyses the impact of temperature anomalies in the Caribbean region (SSTC) on the hydrology of the Artibonite river and on the performance of the water resources system including planned irrigation and hydropower projects. The method relies on hydroeconomic modelling and scenario analysis. The water resources system of the Artibonite River is optimized for two decision-making scenarios : with or without SSTC-based management decisions. Comparing the economic performance of the water resources system for these two scenario reveals the utility of this hydro-climate information. The results show that while the inflows of the basin are linearly dependent on these anomalies, the intensity of the relationship is insufficient to influence the decisions and hence improves the performance of the system, whether in dry, normal or wet year.

Full textThe purpose of this thesis was to study the South Atlantic rift system in Congo by focusing on (1) the dynamic of the upstream paleoreliefs (rift shoulders), (2) the stratigraphic architecture and (3) sediment routing of the pre to syn-rift sedimentary infilling. Detailed field mapping allows to characterize the geometry of the incised valleys, sedimentary environments of thier sediment infilling and to discuss the geodynamic implications of these incised valleys in terms of rift dynamic and control of sedimentary systems. These incised valleys were cut through the Precambrian Mayombe basement by alluvial processes shaping pediments during the stretching period of the rift and filled with middle Aptian siliciclastic sediments of the Chéla formation. The sediment filling consists of flood-generated sublacustrine gravity flow deposits interbedded with organic-rich lacustrine shales, overlying unconformably the basement. These deposits are organized into an overall transgressive depositional sequence, characterized by stacked of elementary fining upward facies sequences. Detailled facies analysis of cores permits to determine the sedimentary environments of the Pointe-Noire, Pointe-Indienne and Chéla Formation, developed during the hyper-extended (sag) rift phase. The middle Barremian Pointe-Noire Formation consists of organic-rich shale-prone deep-lacustrine fan facies intertonguing locally with shallow-water platform carbonate facies and gravity-flow resedimented carbonate facies of the Toca Member that were deposited in an anoxic deep-lake. The Late Barremian–early Aptian Pointe-Indienne Formation is characterized by facies heterogeneity. This Formation consists of sand-rich sublacustrine-fan gravity facies of Mengo member overlain by storm influenced mixed siliciclastic-carbonate ramp facies (Argiles vertes Member) passing upward to deltaic facies of Tchibota member. The middle Aptian Chéla Formation represents a widespread transgressive unit, characterized by lateral and vertical changes in facies and a variety of depositional environnements. It is made up of interbedded coarse-grained alluvial bedload facies and sub-lacustrine gravity facies at the base, overlain by lacustrine-marine mixed bay facies passing upward to sabkha facies, which in turn are capped by evaporites of the Loémé Formation. The sebkha facies records the late middle Aptian marine transgression on the Congo basin prior to the deposition of Upper Aptian evaporites of Loémé Formation. Well-log stratigraphic correlations permit subdivision of the middle Barremian to middle Aptian syn-hyper-extended rift-related deposits into three major depositional sequences that display retrogradation, progradation, and retrogradation stacking pattern, respectively. Detrital zircon and apatite provenance analyses provide a better understanding of sediment routing systems of the pre to syn-rift infilling, and paleorelief and tectonic evolutions during the Early Cretaceous times. The results show changes in sediment provenances and two different source areas. The Berriasian-Valanginian Pre-rift sediments of the Vandji Formation were derived from multiple and relatively distant source areas, located either in the South America and southern of Africa plate, thus supporting the existence of large intracratonic basin prior to the rifting, fed by prominent large-scale drainage system. located toward the southwest. In contrast to the Pre-rift sediments, the Barremian syn-stretched rift sediments of the Djeno Formation and the Aptian syn- hyper-extended rift sediments of the Chela Formation were derived from adjacent Precambrian Mayombe belt that underwent phases of tectonic uplift during the rifting. Consequently, this implies an abrupt change in sediment provenance and relief between the pre-rift phase and the Syn-rift phase and indicate the persistence of local sources, i.e. from rift shoulders, from the stretching rift phase to the hyper-extended (sag) rift phase
