Field research and predictive modelling of global warming and desertification by environmental scientists in the Mediterranean has concentrated on the short term. In this paper, it is argued that collaboration between the historical sciences, especially archaeology, and the environmental sciences can provide a longer-term perspective on desertification in the Mediterranean. Such collaboration has taken place recently in the Vera basin (Almería, south-east Spain), with the financial support of the European Union. AbstractThe Vera Basin is one of a series of interconnected Neogene–Quaternary-age basins located within the Betic Cordillera in SE Spain. The initial marine phase in the basin is represented by the sedimentary succession of the Abad Member (Tortonian–Messinian) and comprises mainly marls with varying amounts of intercalated siliciclastic–calcareous turbidites. The succession contains a rich ichnofauna comprising 12 ichnogenera (21 ichnospecies), which can be subdivided into a number of distinct ichnoassemblages. Detailed analysis of the distribution of these ichnoassemblages reveals that depo

Particular emphasis is placed on the drainage evolution during that period. Located within the Internal zone of the Betic Cordilleras, the Vera Basin is defined within a large left-lateral shear zone and has evolved as a reponse to isostatic uplift from nappe emplacement during the Oligocene, and by regional compressive tectonics. Le dernier épisode métasomatique résulte de la percolation de liquides silicatés de type adakite, issus de la fusion d'une lithosphère subductée. Several basins in Indonesia have been explored and produced for more than 10 decades. With the country’s aspiration of 1 million BOPD oil and 12 billion SCFPD gas production by 2030, efforts in enhancing recovery from existing reservoirs/fields and further exploration in mature and frontier areas have become critical. The East Java Basin has a long exploration history with a total of approximately 700 exploration wells drilled, resulting in more than 4 billion BOE of hydrocarbon resources from 143 fields, thus this area is considered a mature basin. To further explore a mature basin, it is cru

In 2014, ground movement was identified along the pipeline corridor in an area that was primarily dominated by vegetation. Displacement events similar to this, whether known or unknown have the potential to compromise pipeline integrity. The Permian Energy Development Lab (PEDL) is a new research coalition in West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico, managed by a consortium of higher education, public sector, civic, community, and philanthropic organizations . PEDL’s mission is to catalyze advanced energy research, prepare new energy professionals and entrepreneurs, and create value for energy communities. To meet the three parts of this mission, a comprehensive facts-based understanding of the diverse communities within the large Permian region, not relying on impressions or preconceptions, is essential.

This Technical Note suggests that the focus of policing should be on very small geographic units of analysis, such as street segments or small groups of street blocks. Crime at place is not simply a proxy for larger area or community effects; indeed, basic research evidence suggests that crime primarily occurs at very small geographic units of place. This research is reinforced by strong experimental evidence of the effectiveness of place-based policing in reducing crime and disorder so as not to displace crime to nearby areas. In addition, the perception of legitimacy should be a key componen

HY_Features discusses catchment coverage and topological relations. Museum pedagogy is an interdisciplinary field of scientific knowledge, “formed at the intersection of pedagogy, psychology, museology and the relevant discipline of the museum and built on its basis specific practical activities focused on the transfer of cultural (artistic) experience in a museum environment”. The rapid development of technology has led to the so-called modification of this scientific field, we mean a new branch of pedagogical knowledge is emerging - vi

The relationship between firms and inequality has been a focus of recent attention globally. This chapter summarizes basic facts about this relationship for Latin America. Unlike advanced economies where superstar firm growth has prompted concerns over disproportionate income growth at the top, the facts we summarize illustrate that the main concern for Latin America is the extreme prevalence of tiny businesses whose workers and owners tend to populate the bottom income segments. The empirical likelihood that these businesses improve their productivity and grow to hire more workers and pay bet

Abstract:
This paper reviews recent experience with international capital flows in Latin America, and discusses the policy issues that surround them. The paper is predicated on three basic premises. Capital flows to the region are an important source of macroeconomic disturbance. Also, capital flows are very volatile. Large fluctuations in these flows are due in substantial part to factors external to Latin America. In addition, the fluctuations require a policy response. Policy should respond to sudden inflows or outflows of capital.
