In the early modern period, members of the Society of Jesus working as missionaries in the so-called mission of Maynas explored vast areas of the upper Amazon. These missionaries belonged to the very small group of Europeans who lived in the forests of the Amazon Basin for longer periods, in close contact with local people. Their daily experiences in the mission, their high level of education, and their connection with the institutional structures of the Jesuit order made them key figures in the production of knowledge about the Amazon. Abstract:
This chapter considers the question of whether arbitration remains client-focused. It looks at two aspects of modern arbitration practice which may not be as client focused as they could, and should, be. The first is the need to reduce the time and cost of arbitration; the second is the fear of arbitral tribunals that their awards will be open to challenge. The discussion starts from the very basic and very obvious proposition that clients’ interests are most likely to be aligned before there is a dispute. Once a dispute has arisen, even the most reasonable of clients can become unreasonable.

About 60% of the variance in serum urate levels can be explained by inherited genetic factors, but the extent of the contribution of genetic factors to gout in the presence of hyperuricaemia is not known. Genome-wide association studies in Europeans have identified 28 loci controlling serum urate levels, although the molecular basis of the majority of these genetic associations is currently unknown. The SLC2A9 and ABCG2 renal and gut uric acid transporters have very strong effects on urate levels and the risk of gout. Other uric acid transporters (e.g. SLC22A11/OAT478, SLC22A12/URAT1) and a gl

This chapter’s goal is to survey Ashaninka Satipo (Arawak) commanding communicative moves. It argues that imperatives form a paradigm consisting of the first person cohortative construction with the discourse particle tsame ‘come on’, second person canonical imperative construction characterized by a special intonation, and the third person jussive construction formed either with the intentional =ta on the lexical verb or on the copula kant ‘be this way’. In positive commands, the verbs are inflected for irrealis. The canonical imperative has a negative counterpart, whereas the cohortative and

This article looks at shareholder activism and the industry that has emerged around socially responsible investment, which has put pressure on publicly listed companies to comply with basic ethical and social standards. Socially responsible investment is a broad field with many points of connection and disconnection with corporate social responsibility (CSR). It would be natural to assume that socially responsible investment represents an implementation of CSR in financial markets, but many social investors have motivations very different from what one might call the academic view of CSR. Abstract These are exciting times for psychiatry and clinical neuroscience. Our knowledge of basic brain function continues to increase at an accelerating pace as the experimental tools available to basic and clinical scientists become ever more powerful and penetrating. After decades of frustration and relatively slow progress, this explosion of knowledge of the brain is at long last beginning to define the etiology and pathophysiology of complex neuropsychiatric disorders that have long defied biological explanations, which in turn is being translated into clinical advances in diagnosis and

Feeding one’s child is a basic parental instinct, so a situation where this is causing problems is very distressing not only for the child, but also for the family. This chapter examines the management of feeding problems, including nutritional assessment and factors that may help with feeding. Types of enteral feeding are also covered, including nasogastric tube and gastrostomy, with details given on factors that would influence the need for enteral feeding. This chapter includes a section on hydration and mouth care, an often overlooked area of symptom management.

A typical optical system is composed of three basic components: a source, a detector, and a medium in which the optical energy propagates. Many textbooks cover sources and detectors, but very few cover propagation in a comprehensive way, incorporating the latest progress in theory and experiment concerning the propagating medium. This book fulfills that need. It is the first comprehensive and self-contained book on this topic. It is useful reference book for researchers, and a textbook for courses like Laser Light Propagation, Solid State Optics, and Optical Propagation in the Atmosphere.

We discuss the need for and prospects of a logic describing the relation among reasons and the outcomes they support. After noting some shortcomings of the dominant weighing conception of this support relation, we very briefly outline the basic idea behind two attempts at providing such a logic. We then describe a few topics that are ripe for further research: the logical relations among reasons themselves, the source and formal structure of priority relations among reasons, whether the strengths of multiple reasons can combine, and a problem concerning the strength of undercutting defeaters.

Neurological disease is very common. It is estimated that one-third of consultations with general practitioners involve neurological complaints, and neurological disorders are present in one-third of patients admitted to hospital. In considering how to reduce the incidence of neurological disease, one must take into account the feasibility of prevention, and the overall morbidity caused by the disease. In stroke, which is very common, interventions which reduce incidence by a small percentage have the potential to have a large impact on a population basis. A disorder such as migraine, while no
