Abstract:
Field research and predictive modelling of global warming and desertification by environmental scientists in the Mediterranean has concentrated on the short term. In this paper, it is argued that collaboration between the historical sciences, especially archaeology, and the environmental sciences can provide a longer-term perspective on desertification in the Mediterranean. Such collaboration has taken place recently in the Vera basin (Almería, south-east Spain), with the financial support of the European Union. AbstractThe Vera Basin is one of a series of interconnected Neogene–Quaternary-age basins located within the Betic Cordillera in SE Spain. The initial marine phase in the basin is represented by the sedimentary succession of the Abad Member (Tortonian–Messinian) and comprises mainly marls with varying amounts of intercalated siliciclastic–calcareous turbidites. The succession contains a rich ichnofauna comprising 12 ichnogenera (21 ichnospecies), which can be subdivided into a number of distinct ichnoassemblages. Detailed analysis of the distribution of these ichnoassemblages reveals that depo

Abstract:
The low cost of production and the widespread use of plastics has brought about a problem that is difficult to measure; microplastics are considered emerging pollutants because their presence can pose a risk to the environment. This study focuses on the characterization of microplastics (MPs) in the nesting area of green (Chelonia mydas) and Kemp’s ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) sea turtles, on the coastal municipalities of Nautla and Vega de Alatorre, Veracruz, Mexico. Five beaches along 15.5 km of coastline were analyzed and samples were taken in the intertidal zone. In this work, only micropl

Climate change is one of the most important problems facing society in the 21st century. Despite the uncertainty about the behaviour of rainfall due to climate change, what is clear is that average rainfall has been reduced in the inland areas and headwaters of Spain’s river basins. The Tagus basin is one of the most affected, with implications for the Jucar and Segura basins. The working hypothesis is to corroborate with the data collected on the effects of climate change on the TTS. To this end, the following methodology has been applied: (a) analysis in the headwaters of the Tagus, using da

Late Cretaceous sedimentary rocks assigned to the Santa Marta (Herbert Sound Member) and López de Bertodano (Cape Lamb and Sandwich Bluff members) formations of the Marambio Group, crop out on Cape Lamb, Vega Island. Although previous studies have recognized that these sedimentary rocks were derived from the northern Antarctic Peninsula region, the work presented here allows the provenance and palaeogeographical evolution of the region to be described in detail. On the basis of both sandstone petrography and clay mineralogy, the Herbert Sound and Cape Lamb members reflect sediment input from a

To date, Cretaceous nautilids from the Antarctic Peninsula have received little attention and only a single species had been reported, Eutrephoceras simile Spath, from Seymour, Snow Hill, and James Ross islands. Currently, it is considered a synonym of Eutrephoceras subplicatum (Steinmann), which has also been described from the Upper Cretaceous of central Chile, southern Argentina and Angola. Here, we report and describe E. subplicatum in detail, based on specimens from the Lower Campanian–Maastrichtian of Vega, Seymour and James Ross islands, presenting, for the first time, embryonic conch f

Splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT) encompasses thrombosis in the vessels of the splanchnic basin and has a relatively rare occurrence with a reported frequency in the general population of 1–2%. An episode of seemingly unprovoked SVT almost always triggers a diagnostic work-up for a Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN), since atypical site thrombosis is a hallmark of MPN-associated thrombophilia. Primary myelofibrosis (PMF) is a rare MPN with an estimated incidence between 0.1 and 1/100,000 per year. Although prothrombotic tendency in PMF is not envisioned as a subj
