Abstract:
Abstract Political parties in Albania on several occasions during the past two decades have won the election in certain areas over 3 times in a row. While victory and governance of the same area, for sure creates a margin consumption which has affected the dynamics of the bastions at least in the recent national election. Parties are consumed in their strongholds if they decide the same candidates, either as a political force. In the focus of this article, will be the consuming steps of political parties in their stronghold areas, either reflecting the fall results during the election process. Will we have a final rupture in Albania consumption bastions of political parties and how would be the future of dynamic bastion, will be the question of this article scientific research. A fracture would have strongholds in shqipare perfuindimtare the consumption of political parties and how will be the future of dynamics will be bastions of this artikulil question scientific research. Bastion’s consumption occurs mainly from major political forces on the left if either of right on the study will be taken 4 constituencies which voted for the same party in three elections one by one. In our focus will be general elections, not local elections.

Abstract:
In the sixteenth century, chronic wars and a high concentration of towns made the Low Countries one of Europe's prime laboratories for innovations in military architecture and urbanism. The 1553 inspection tour of the region by engineers Giovanni Maria Olgiati and Sebastian van Noyen marked the assimilation of “Italian-style” fortifications into Netherlandish practice and the transition there from defenses with bastions to proper bastioned systems. Olgiati and Van Noyen's joint tour is well documented through a dozen design drawings now held at the Vatican Library, Turin's Archivio di Stato, and Madrid's Palacio Real, as well as a closely related atlas in Turin and complementary archival records. As Pieter Martens discusses in Planning Bastions: Olgiati and Van Noyen in the Low Countries in 1553, these materials, including many hitherto unknown plans, provide new insights into the design process, offer a unique panorama of the Low Countries' border defenses at this critical moment, and illuminate the genesis and spread of bastioned fortifications in Europe.

Abstract:
Purpose – This column explores issues regarding the exposure of online patron information, privacy and intellectual freedom. Several angles are explored and ways in which libraries can effectively respond to these issues are proposed. Design/methodology/approach – This is a regular journal column. Findings – There is a need for balance in our concerns over the use of technology and patron privacy and freedom. On the one hand, libraries have an obligation to maintain patron privacy to promote intellectual freedom. On the other hand, once reasonable steps are taken to protect patrons, an informed-consent approach seems to strike the right balance between protection from constraint and the freedom to research as a person sees fit. Originality/value – The Internet is known as the “information highway” but is also an “Internet of Things” where smart devices are connected to one another either through centralized services or peer-to-peer networks. This growing phenomenon is a result as much of the desire to automate as it is the increased expectations for convenience and ease of use. Libraries need to be prepared to protect patrons from external threats to privacy as a response to this situation, as well as educate patrons on the risks associated with data aggregation and exposure through the use of online services.

Abstract:
The bastion fortress of Kilia, now non-existent, was designed by the French engineer François Kauffer on October 8-9, 1794. The French specialist received the order to build this fortress in April, 1795 from Sultan Selim III, and the final of the construction took place in 1797. Thus, the old stone fortifications of Kilia were replaced by a rectangular bastion fortress with four corner bastions. The period between 1680 and the Great French Revolution was called the “classic century of military engineering”, when the capabilities of the bastion system were particularly appreciated. The French military architecture of that time massively influenced on the defensive system of several countries. The bastion fortress of Kilia was also designed according to the principles of the French fortification school. Comparing several parameters of the quadrilateral bastion model proposed by the French engineer Vauban with the project made by F. Kauffer, we will notice a certain influence of this model on the bastion fortress of Kilia. Only some proportions and the plan of a corner bastion is due to the configuration of the river line. The Danubian fort also contains other component elements, that belong to the Vauban’s first manner of fortification.

In addition to security advantages like implementing defense in depth and complying with compliance standards, current bastion services are simple to deploy and fit into the DevOps culture. Bastions continue to be the most dependable and secure options for secure access to cloud infrastructures because they offer administrative simplicity without surrendering compliance and security. In this paper, an experimental set up was conducted to measure the cycle time it takes to provision resources using manual point-and-click graphical user interface (GUI) in Amazon web services (AWS) and time it takes for codified infrastructure to make application programming interface (API) calls using terraform. It also focuses on the design and deployment of Bastion host on AWS and terraform, and the comparison between the two with respect to various parameters.

Abstract:
Storage properties of water-soluble salts in bastion historical brick are presented in this paper. Probably the most important factor affecting the material degradation represents water from rain, snowfalls or ice, which penetrates into the unprotected parts of building. Therefore, the deterioration of building materials is in many cases caused by water-soluble salts. The most common salts are on chloride, sulfate and nitrate origin. The aim of this article is influence of salts ions on masonry from bastions fortifications. The main practical impact will be in providing more precise information about material so it should lead to improvement the quality of reconstruction process of historical buildings.

Abstract:
Kilia medieval fortress, now non-existant, consisted of a stone citadel attributed to the Genoese, an outer belt of fortifications, built under Stephen the Great, and an Ottoman bastion fortress, designed and built in the end of the XVIII century. This article examines two documents referring to the Kilia fortress, discovered by the author in the Russian State Military-Historical Archive of Moscow. The first document is an undated plan for a Turkish bastion fortress developed, most likely, by the French engineer François Kauffer. The figure shows the Ottoman-Turkish names of bastions (Agha Bastion, Pasha Bastion, Unique/Unusual Bastion), gates (Stone Gate, Gate with a portcullis, Water Gate, Agha Gate), stone buildings (Sultan Bayezid’s Mosque), etc. The second document, also undated, shows four images of a stone fortress, built by the Moldovans. The iconographic source offers information on the layout of some towers (rectangular, hexagonal, octagonal and complex), the tower’s shape (prismatic with four, six and eight sides; cylindrical; with a rizalit; with an upper console floor, ending in the form of a turret), the shape of the roofs (hipped with four slopes, six and eight slopes, conical, gable roof or gable one with a ridge), the shape of the merlons (simple rectangular, rectangular with a gable ending located longitudinally or transversely), etc.

Abstract:
AbstractBayesian chronological modeling is used to investigate the chronology of bastioned palisades during the precolumbian period in the Midwestern and Southeastern United States. Nine precolumbian settlements in the Midwest and Southeast with bastioned palisades have been subject to scientific dating (Angel Mounds, Annis Village, Aztalan, Cahokia Mounds, Etowah, Kincaid Mounds, Jonathan Creek, Moundville, and Southwind). Complete radiocarbon datasets from these sites are presented within an interpretative Bayesian statistical framework. The results provide a glimpse into the history of Mississippi period (A.D. 1000–1700) fortifications with bastions and indicate that the analyzed fortifications were built and maintained predominantly in A.D. 1200–1400. This finding suggests a greater institutionalized role for defense and warfare in post-A.D. 1200 Mississippian societies. Additionally, modeling results further indicate that the investigated Mississippian centers continued to maintain fortifications for generations after their construction.

Abstract:
Political Science
Ph.D.
I theorize that a sub-set of states build and maintain authoritarian organizations (AOs) that exist to protect and reinforce authoritarian practices and values. First, I offer a logic for understanding AOs and their contributions to their member states. Second, I develop a framework that hypothesizes a range of benefits that an AO might offer its member states, identifying both material benefits (that contribute to repression and co-optation behaviors) and ideational benefits (that legitimize autocratic behavior) that an AO might provide. Finally, I assess three contemporary AOs: the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Qualitative evidence shows that AOs most successfully contribute to the ideational side of the dictator’s toolkit, particularly by co-opting civil society into a structure set and maintained by authoritarians, and legitimizing authoritarian rule via distorting authoritarian practices, bandwagoning mutual rhetorical support at the international level, and challenging democracy as a norm of governance, chipping away at the Third and Fourth Waves of democratization. My research challenges the dominant understanding of IOs as generally democratizing actors, by identifying a subset of IOs that deliberately perform against this expectation. This research agenda also furthers our understanding the dictator’s toolkit by adding an international component to explanations of how non-democratic governments survive and counter democratizing pressures at home and abroad.

This study examined how a group of first year technical college students ascertained the truthfulness of information retrieved from their college library’s catalogue. This study revealed a strong, passive dependence by first year students on those individuals and institutions perceived to be in positions of authority, who concurrently conferred not just truth, but beliefs, and understandings; while other students, displaying interface fuzziness, confused library information sources with those found on the internet. It is recommended that those instructing technical college students encourage greater levels of reflection and cognitive engagement with information selected for use by students.

Vigus, Robert T. "Fortification Renaissance: the Roman Origins of the Trace Italienne." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2013. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc271911/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Military Revolution thesis posited by Michael Roberts and expanded upon by Geoffrey Parker places the trace italienne style of fortification of the early modern period as something that is a novel creation, borne out of the minds of Renaissance geniuses. Research shows, however, that the key component of the trace italienne, the angled bastion, has its roots in Greek and Roman writing, and in extant constructions by Roman and Byzantine engineers. The angled bastion of the trace italienne was yet another aspect of the resurgent Greek and Roman culture characteristic of the Renaissance along with the traditions of medicine, mathematics, and science. The writings of the ancients were bolstered by physical examples located in important trading and pilgrimage routes. Furthermore, the geometric layout of the trace italienne stems from Ottoman fortifications that preceded it by at least two hundred years. The Renaissance geniuses combined ancient bastion designs with eastern geometry to match a burgeoning threat in the rising power of the siege cannon.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In higher plants, the distribution of sugars within cells is occurring by membrane proteins called transporters. Several studies describe that parallel to their implication in development, the sugar transporters have a role in plant/pathogen interactions. The availability of the genome of Vitis vinifera offered the opportunity to identify 69 sugar transporter and 6 invertase sequences in this species. The expression profile of these different genes has been studied in several organs as well as in response to a biotic stress. In plant leaves, the infection by Botrytis cinerea led to an up-regulation of the VvBIG8. 1 and production of the phytoalexin resveratrol were also detected. To strengthen the results obtained with plants, a cell suspension culture of grapvine cv Chardonnay was etablished. Infection of the grapevine cells by B. Cinerea led to the induction of 3 hexose transporter genes VvHTI, 5, 13 as well as cell wall invertase gene VvcwINV1. The induction of these 4 genes was also observed in response to three fungal elicitors. Parallel to the induction of these sugar transporter genes, an increase in the glucose transport activity was noted in elicited cells. Taken together, these data indicate that grapevine hexose transporters and cell wall invertases are involved in the implementation of the defense mechanisms during an infection by the necrotrophic fungus B. Cinerea or an elicitation by fungal elicitors. The overexpression of some sugar transporter and invertase genes in grapevine plants could demonstrate their role in tolerance mechanisms

Abstract:
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the evolution of artillery has commanded the evolution of military architecture. Fortifications physically depict a representation of the history of engineering and architectural principles; including strategic site placement, materiality, construction methodology, principles of weaponry, defense and design layout. Visiting any one of these enigmatic and monumental structures offers a walk into the past, a glimpse into the ideologies, cultures and sentiments of its conception. Fortifications, particularly American fortifications, lay silent waiting for visitors to unlock their contributions to the national and local historic fabric. Fort Washington is one such structure located within Fort Washington Park, Maryland perched above the Bank of the Potomac River where it long protected the Nation's Capital. Through my research, I propose to answer the following questions: How did the evolution of artillery and its unique site influence the design layout of Fort Washington? How does one begin to revive and restore such an extraordinary site? How can the architecture of today spark the interest of visitors while encompassing the needs of local residents? My proposal for a new, multifunctional visitor center tries to embrace, respect and reflect the existing structures by inspiring wonder among tourists and attracting local residents while also allowing for their restoration and self-sustainment.

Abstract:
Guarini's Trattato di Fortificatione provides an up-to-date international overview of military culture and art in the field of tracing the elements of modern fortifications. The bastions, which represent one of its main elements, have been investigated in the present work through the graphic analysis and geometric decomposition of the bastions’ tracings, including the variants found in the treatise. Moreover, graphical reconstructions of all the bastions aim to discover the Guarinian vocabulary of shapes and define the shape of the bastions, the relationship between the shape of the bastion and that of the fortress, and the defensive power concerning the musket’s fire.

Abstract:
The original shape of the Cubete of the Alcazar of CarmonaAmong the works of the so-called “transitional” military architecture from the last quarter of the fifteenth century, one of the most unique cases erected in the Iberian Peninsula is the Cubete of Carmona (Seville). This bastion built in the times of the Catholic Monarchs follows the new poliorcetic standards, but with forms, which are quite innovative and could be considered breakthrough. Conceived as a bastion external to the Alcázar Real, it has a moat in part connected with the moat of the main fortress. The bastion is open in the rear, and could be consider a ravelin, although its location is in an angle of the outer enclosure of the Alcazar, which preludes the subsequent pentagonal bastions. Its anomalous plan is a horseshoe shape that has been discussed by various authors, but so far, there has never been a fully detailed survey with elevations and sections, nor, above all, an attempt to address their hypothetical reconstruction. This paper presents new plans, sections, elevations and images that proves this work is unusual and truly revolutionary for its time.

Abstract:
Archaeology and documentary research: the first bastioned fortifications of Alacant (Spain)In the Courts of the Crown of Aragon held in Monzón (Huesca, 1528) it was raised the need to organise the coast defence of the Kingdom of Valencia through a series of fortification works and the creation and maintenance of militias in order to avoid the attacks and incursions of the Turks and the Berber corsairs. In Alacant (1533), under the auspice of the Duke of Calabria, viceroy of the Kingdom of Valencia, and the design of Joan de Cervelló, noble, military and engineer of King Carlos I and with great experience in artillery and fortification of cities, three bastions were built taking advantage of the medieval walls: Sant Francesc, Sant Bertomeu and Sant Sebastià. These improvement works on the walls continued with the rise of two more towers that protected the gate (Puerta del Mar or Montserrat). The bastions had a circular plan and an escarp elevation up to their half and vertical until the crowning, besides a low armed parapet. They were demolished because of the urban renovations that Alacant experienced during the nineteenth century. However, the historical planimetry, engraving images and photographs, as well as the archaeological excavations carried out in them allow to know their morphology and materials, which are explained in this paper.

Abstract:
New architectures or the protection of the fortifications in TarragonaThe conservation of the fortification in Tarragona was not an easy task. In 1884 the Roman wall was declared a National Monument, and in 1966 it was declared a historical and artistic complex. These measures distant in time did not achieve a joint protection of it. This study deals with the transformation of the bastion of Cadenas in the San Antonio Promenade. It is an example of urban speculation during Franco’s developmentalism. Our contribution is the result of an analysis and comparison of various types of documentation: military, engineering command headquarters as well as municipal and state. We demonstrate that the destruction of the bastions was due to the low value given to these defensive structures, which were considered an obstacle to urban expansion and development.

Abstract:
The analysis of the fortified routes in the city of Pavia (Italy) clarifies the adaptation of the medieval capital in the historical politics of the Mediterranean, where the evolution of the defensive system till the Spanish bastioned walls (sixteenth century) identifies the updating of the Lombard tradition to the practices of modern military architecture. Their defensive structures survive in the urban design of the contemporary city, in the configuration of infrastructures and urban aggregates, reflecting the consequences of the great processes of their dismantling (from 1905). The comparison between historical investigations and the current ruins, fragmented into disconnected portions between the historical bastions and the monumental gates, shows a picture of abandonment of the military structures that generates repeated collapses and emerging risk factors towards the surrounding densified urban context. The experimentation of military architectural approaches of documentation at the urban scale, developed by the research laboratory DAda Lab. of University of Pavia, defines an analysis process through the digital representation of the urban remains that is suitable for the preservation of the survived city walls and the enhancement of their fortified identity. The application of different 3D LiDAR systems for morphological acquisition promotes an integrated digitation process of scansets on the fortified system controlled at the urban metric scale: the experimentation applies the use of a mobile real time scanner for the digital tracking of historical routes, on which to implement the georeferencing of detailed static scanworlds, integrated in correspondence of Bastions and Monumental Gates. The optimization of architectural data density and the integration between data contribute to finalize a 3D territorial database predisposed to the architectural modelling of volumes and scenarios of structural instability of the military ruins, defining a virtual framework of widespread knowledge for the historical conservation and urban prevention of the fortified system.

Abstract:
Integrated methodologies for the knowledge, representation and protection of historical military architecture. Construction systems and vaulted paths along the western bastions of Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy)The integrated method is been applied in the meet point between the curtain of Santa Chiara and the curtain of de Cardona, in a limited area of the ancient walls of Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy). The sector consists of a bastion called “curtain of Santa Chiara” designed in 1575 and realized in the period 1575-1578 by the military engineer Giorgio Paleari and the “curtain of de Cardona”, a military work commissioned by the Viceroy in the 1930s of the same century and interested by modification until the seventeenth century. The archive documents offer a lot of informations on the presence of gunboats and vaulted passages designed and built in this area during this period. This source –accompanied by an architectural survey of the existing military work and the knowledge of the construction techniques used at the time and indicated in the military treaties– may direct a subsequent investigation with geophysical methods. To this aim, a first graphic representation of the study area in the sixteenth century is proposed.

Abstract:
In the Kasbah of Bejaia, the most imposing building is a fort built under the Spanish occupation at the beginning of the sixteenth century. This bastioned structure consists of mighty perimeter walls (from 12 to 20 meters high on the outside) which contain an embankment surmounted by a terrace. The lower part of the Kasbah dates back to different eras, whereas the upper part was built by the Spaniards and date back to the sixteenth century. The form of the Kasbah is a rectangle which one side is adjacent to the city. It is flanked by strongholds and bastions and by three very high and very massive towers, with murder holes. The fort contains five interesting internal rooms, hidden inside the embankment and organized on three levels: two rectangular vaulted rooms, two overlapping circular rooms surmounted by a domes and a narrow rectangle covered by a barrel vault. This paper reports the preliminary results of an in-depth interdisciplinary and multiscale study that was carried out on the fort to identify any weaknesses and vulnerabilities to external actions and natural hazards, including seismic loads.

Abstract:
Nicosia today has the characteristics of being the only divided city in Europe. By examining the inside of the walls, one observes that the structure of the city is determined by the circular plan of the walls that were constructed during the Venetian period. There are 11 bastions on the walls and three Venetian gates, namely Kyrenia Gate, Famagusta Gate and Paphos Gate, were originally designed to allow entrance to the city that is encircled by the walls. Nicosia continued to be the islands capital which has fallen under Ottoman rule in between 1571-1878. In the period of British occupation 1878-1960, as a result of the increasing population, the city of Nicosia overflew the walls and developed by spreading beyond the city walls and 8 new passages were opened. The organic fabric of the walled city, with the establishment of buffer zones after the peace operation of 1974, resulted in the division of the island that divided the capital city into two. In 1931, because of the increased vehicle needs through the north side, the walls around the Kyrenia Gate (Porta del Proveditore) were trimmed and designed as a single monumental building. Between Kyrenia Gate and Barbaro bastion wall height is lower than the existing. Public lavatory and 9 small shops were inserted. Sitting steps were designed on the walls and two stairs were constructed to reach these area. To give an access from the moat to the inner city there is a passage. In this context, identifying changes of the Kyrenia Gate-Barbaro bastion site, during this historic period, is the main goal of this study. Decisions with regard to these walls and observations to be made on right places to determine the changes are main focuses of the study.

Abstract:
Old Navarino fortification (Palaiokastro) is located on the promontory supervising the naturally endowed Navarino-bay at the south-western foot of Peloponnese peninsula, near the contemporary city of Pylos. The cliff where it is built and where ancient relics lie, was fortified by Frankish in the thirteenth century. The fortification though knows significant alterations firstly by Serenissima Republic of Venice from the fifteenth century that aims to dominate the naval routes of Eastern Mediterranean by establishing a system of coastal fortifications and later by the Ottomans after the conquest of Venice’s possessions at Messenia in 1500. Between fifteenth and seventeenth century, apart from important modifications at the initial enceinte of the northern Upper City, the most notable transformation of Old Navarino is the construction of the new Lower fortification area at the south and the southern outwork ending up to the coastline. Especially the Lower fortification is a sample of multiple and large-scale successive alterations for the adjustment to technological advances of artillery (fortification walls reinforcement, modification of tower-bastions, early casemates, gate complex enforcements). The current essay focuses on the study of these specific elements of the early artillery period and the examination of Old Navarino’s strategic role at the time of transition before the adaptation of “bastion-front” fortification patterns, such as those experimented in the design of the fortified city of New Navarino, constructed at the opposite side of the Navarino gulf by the Ottomans (1573).

Abstract:
This paper contributes to an agenda that views the effects of policies and institutional reforms as dependent on the structure of political incentives for national and subnational political actors. The paper studies political incentive structures at the subnational level and the mechanisms whereby they affect national-level politics and policymaking at the national level in Argentina, a highly decentralized middle-income democracy, Argentina. The Argentine political system makes subnational political power structures very influential in national politics. Moreover, most Argentine provinces are local bastions of power dominated by entrenched elites, characterized by scarce political competition, weak division of powers, and clientelistic political linkages. Political dominance in the provinces and political importance at the national level reinforce each other, dragging the Argentine political and policymaking system towards the practices and features of its most politically backward regions.
