Full textAbstract The object program of this study is the impact the Wheeled Armoured Vehicle PANDUR II 8X8 will have upon the Infantry Battalions that will receive such pieces of equipment. Quite naturally, the Human Resources issues will be handled here, namely the matters involving the required personnel qualification to operate such sophisticated pieces of hardware. Having in mind that they come in eleven operational versions, each having its particularities both in hardware and personnel, gives us an idea of the impact that this will have in the Portuguese Army Organization. This means that the learning programs will be described in some detail, including study manuals, job definitions and logistics, the latter including the indispensable infrastructures to be built, in order to accommodate and maintain the incoming fleet. Being an Applied Research Paper, the underlying methodology of data collection includes Bibliographic Research, live interviews and recordings, direct observation, and comparative analysis of previous Armoured Vehicle Impacts.

Full textAbstract This study focused on the “Characterization of the role efficacy performed by the Junior Officers and/or Captains of Infantry, Case study: 1st Parachutist Infantry Battalion and 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion”. This research aims to characterize and identify the command and leadership competences of Junior Officers and Captains of Infantry and the dimensions of role efficacy that promotes that efficacy for the exercise of command. For the research, it was conducted a questionnaire of leadership competences with 23 leadership competencies and three criteria factors (extraordinary effort, efficacy and satisfaction) and a survey on the role efficacy with ten dimensions of role efficacy . These questionnaires were carried out at 101 1st Military Parachutist Infantry Battalion and 1st Battalion Mechanized Infantry military men, divided by the three classes (Officers, NCOs and Privates). The major outcome from the dataset analysis is that subordinates recognize that all the leadership competences contribute to the role efficacy of the Junior Officer and Captain of Infantry, with special emphasis on the following competences, “consideration”, “ability to solve problems” “influence/reference”, “empathy”, “interpersonal relations”, “teamwork and cohesion”, “conflict management and negotiation”, “task orientation”, “recognition, positive feedback and valorization”, “vision” and “proactivity”. The results indicate that from the ten dimensions of role efficacy under study, the subordinates identify the following, “confrontation”, “influence”, “creativity”, “proactive”, “helping relationship” and “interdependence” as those that contribute most to role efficacy of the Junior Officers and Captains of Infantry.

Full textAbstract This Investigation paper on the theme “The Infantry Battalion of the European Union Battlegroup” aims to clarify the capabilities and features of a maneuver battalion sized unit required to integrate a BG. The aim is to carry out a study directed to identify which Infantry Battalion is more suitable to integrate a BG. To conduct this study, I went through an exhaustive bibliographical research, which was the basis for the development of a questionnaire intended to verify the hypotheses related with the main question raised: “Which Infantry Battalion is more appropriate for the Battlegroup?” The method used was a qualitative analysis, under a case study format. After analyzing the results it is concluded that a light infantry unit with a strong deployment capability, and material and equipment providing protection and mobility its the best answer, organized in order to allow more flexibility of employm ent, through combinations of several different types of assets, including suportting capabilities to increase its own potential may contain an organization that confers greater flexibility, by combining various types of media and other capabilities including the ability to increase employment.

Full textAbstract During the missions in foreign Theater of Operations in which Portugal participates, often situations arise that were not planned and that the commanders are required to decide within a short period of time. This applied research study, follow presented and subsume to the theme "Characterization of the decision making of FND: a case study Commands" focuses on how the commanders of various echelons think and organize their ideas before making a unpredictably decision. Through this research sought to verify whether there are similarities in the decision making process to various echelons of command, especially as the style of leadership and decision-making models that each commander takes in such situations. Initially was carried out a literature research in publications that addressed the theme of this work, and then was made a field research of a qualitative nature, where interviews were applied to officers who participated in the mission in Afghanistan, in order to analyze the models of decision-making that they select before taking non-programmed decisions. This study concluded that the non-programmed decision-making process to different levels is different because the importance of the decisions that are restrained at each echelon is different and as the echelon increases most difficult is to take decisions that must be taken, that requires a greater planning and that decisions relate more influence to the entire force. Within the same echelon the decision-making models are very similar showing that the time available and the type of decisions that are characteristic of the various echelons have a great preponderance.

Full textAbstract This work aims are to investigate the capabilities and limitations of reconnaissance platoon equipped with vehicles PANDURII 8x8. The organic restructuring in 2006, brought significant changes to the entire brigade intervention. The changes occurred at the level of personnel and material, but the greatest impact was the introduction of new vehicles PANDURII 8x8. This new application has modified the doctrine applied so far, changing the way of conducting major combat operations. In the case of a reconnaissance platoon, it interfered with the conduct of reconnaissance and security operations. By analysis and comparison of different organic reconnaissance platoon wheels from both Portuguese and American Armies, it is concluded the capabilities and limitations of the platoon. This analysis confirms that the current organization has lost the flexibility that the number of tanks used to proportionate, however the protection capacity has increased due to the acquisition of Pandur vehicles. This research will offer an organic, of personnel and material that allows the efficient fulfillment of tasks assigned. The reconnaissance and surveillance are critical on the battlefield and therefore, the reconnaissance platoon is essential. However, the reconnaissance platoon must be prepared for the ever-changing operating environment since it is the first to enter in the field.

Full textAbstract Portugal, while a NATO member, owns, on the International framework, demands which lack in its participation, on missions, abroad. In this scope, the Portuguese Army prepares, according to the Forces staffer which is provided to NATO, Units to be settled as “Deployed National Forces”, aiming to accomplish a wide range of missions. Concerning the Kosovo theatre, it has been custom to carry out a training and Units’ projection, bearing in mind the accomplishment of the Kosovo’s Force Command Tactical Reserve mission. The present study is subordinated to the theme “A Mechanized Rifle Platoon’s, of a Mechanized Infantry Battalion, training in order to be employed in the accomplishment of the current mission given to Portugal in the Kosovo’s theatre. The aim of this investigation is the presentation of a training plan, as well as its correspondent period of time, to be applied to a Mechanized Rifle Platoon, which includes a wide extent of proficiency on tasks inherent to the Portugal’s current mission in Kosovo. The scientific method used on the formulation of this investigation is based upon the “Social Sciences’ research guide” by Raymond Quivy and Luc Van Campenhoudt. The schematic proposed by the authors was properly adapted to our investigation on the tactics scope. The gathering of information emerged from the document analysis, as well as from a set of interviews with some intervenients in the planning, execution and evaluation of the training on the 1 st Mechanized Infantry Battalion. Afterwards, we intercepted all the information and we came up with a training plan to be applied to a Mechanized Rifle Platoon. The results mirrored that the application of a training plan, which ensures a wide extent of proficiency, besides containing tasks inherent to all the operations spectrum, also demands a period of time substantially superior than the one given by a superior echelon.

Full textThis applied research work is the reflection of a comparative study between two mechanized forces, including the Portuguese Infantry Battalion Mechanized and the French Mechanized Infantry Regiment . This study focuses on four development vectors , namely , the doctrine to the typology of the level of forces in the study, the organization of their organic conditions , the material , more specifically the main weapons systems used by the two forces and the infrastructure available to training. This study is a comparative study, with the nature applied research .This comparative study aims to confront the doctrine and practice, and to identify and characterize the main vulnerabilities and potentials of the two forces in the study taking into account the development of vectors presented above can thus monetize media in use Infantry Battalion Mechanized and/or contribute to a futur acquisition. We found that the difference between the two forces in study is its type. That is, while the French force is heavy, the Portuguese strength is average, however intended to be a heavy force . What leads us to the big difference derived from the type of forces that are the vehicles used by the two forces, is an armored personnel carrier and infantry fighting vehicle . To take as heavy force , the Portuguese Mechanized Infantry Battalion, need to purchase an infantry fighting vehicle , to thereby give a qualitative leap , a prospect of combined arms.

Full textThis research work entitled "The integration of a Designated Marksman in an Infantry Battalion" proposes to investigate the integration of a designated marksman in an Infantry Battalion level unit. For its attainment was defined as general purpose to analyze the implications of the use of designated marksman in the current operating environment, in support of Infantry Battalion units. In order to achieve it, the assignment was limited to the study of Infantry Battalions Mechanized by Wheels, from the Intervention Brigade, resorting whenever necessary to Stryker Battalions of the United States Army, given their combat experience in different theatres of operations. An analysis model was structured for this work, making a qualitative approach of a descriptive nature. The method of hypothetical-deductive approach is used through a downward connection started with the description of the operating environment, the use of Infantry Battalions and the use of designated marksman. From the analysis of the results it appears that the current operating environment is highly complex and there is a trend for the future armed conflicts to occur in failed States and urban areas and there is a predominantly irregular threat. Infantry Battalions have the need to own designated marksman, so that they can employ precisely direct fire. It was concluded that, given the typology of threat, with the increasing complexity of the operating environment, the Portuguese Infantry Battalions, that in future may be employed in this type of operations theaters, should have a designated marksman employing precisely direct fire to medium distances, and they should be integrated at the level of Section shooters.
