Abstract:
This article examines the clothing accessory choices of Rachel, Countess of Bath, for the period of her first marriage, 1639–54. Her General Account Book listing purchases she made, and the other account books, from the Tawstock Estate in Devon and the London household, show the accessories she bought, both for herself and her servants. It will consider how much she spends on her accessories and, through the evidence of surviving tradesmen's and individuals' probate inventories, whether these accessories were also available and purchased by women lower down the social scale. It will look at the differences in accessory costs and fabrics across society.

Abstract:
Based on the author’s research for her MA, supervised by Mary M. Brooks, this article examines the history of the little-documented but once famous London couturier, Mattli (1903/1904–1982). An argument is made for a re-evaluation of the importance of Mattli’s contribution to the post-war British fashion and textile industry which has so far been overlooked in the histories of fashion. Research is focused upon a wide range of sources, including a collection of press books from the Mattli archive at the Fashion Museum, Bath, and extant clothing in British collections.

Abstract:
In an era when few women achieved consultant surgical status, Miss Forrester-Brown proved not only a pioneer orthopaedic surgeon but also demonstrated that her sex was no bar to this physically demanding specialty. Virtually on her own she consolidated a series of clinics throughout three counties, elevating the Bath and Wessex Orthopaedic Hospital to national prominence. In addition to her books and journal communications, she maintained strong links with distinguished orthopaedic surgeons in Europe and America to keep abreast of innovations beneficial to her patients. Yet her shoulder was not always at the wheel, for she enjoyed horse-riding, ski-ing and swimming, and she was deeply interested in literature and art.

Hall, Stephanie Jane. "E-book trial using handheld devices yields mixed reactions from public library staff and users in Essex County, UK." Evidence Based Library and Information Practice 1, no. 1 (March 15, 2006): 89. http://dx.doi.org/10.18438/b8vc7z.

Full text
Abstract:
A review of: Dearnley, James, Cliff McKnight, and Anne Morris. "Electronic Book Usage in Public Libraries: A Study of User and Staff Reactions to a PDA-based Collection." Journal of Librarianship and Information Science 36.4 (December 2004): 175-82. Objective – To assess e-book delivery on handheld devices provided to public library patrons, particularly housebound or visually impaired patrons and the users of a mobile library. Design – Product trial with a post-trial questionnaire for patrons and a post-trial focus group discussion among participating library staff. Setting – Mid-to-large size public library system in the United Kingdom. Subjects – 23 patrons participated; the number of library staff participating is not identified. Although the target population initially identified was housebound people, patrons reliant on the mobile library, and visually impaired people, the project team determined that it did not have sufficient funds to upgrade the PDAs to be compatible with their preferred software for the visually impaired, and therefore this group was eliminated from the study. Lack of funds was also cited as a factor in the team being unable to provide assistive technology for those users suffering from arthritis, though this group was not excluded from the study. Just over half the patrons were aged 60+, and more than half were female. Two patrons self-identified as housebound. Methods – e-books were downloaded onto Hewlett Packard iPAQ 1910 PDAs by library staff and were loaned to participants between January and April of 2004. Although the authors of the study state that “creating staff champions was an important objective in this project” (p.176), it is unclear whether staff were screened for positive attitude towards e-Books. Prior to the trial, staff members were provided with training and orientation, and participants were asked for their font and reading preferences. Support for participating patrons was available from staff or via an accompanying user manual, e-mail, or telephone help line. In a questionnaire administered following the trial, participants were asked to respond to questions focusing on functionality of the handheld devices and e-book formats, positive and negative reactions to reading from the devices, and differences in the reading experience using the PDA as opposed to a book. A group discussion with participating library staff was held in April of 2004. The feedback from both groups was compared. Main results – Patrons: The devices were generally found to be usable, with a few exceptions: one patron with arthritis had difficulty operating the device and another developed hand cramps. Positive reactions regarding the novelty of using the devices, portability (the ability to store several books on one small device) and readability (the ability to customize font size and to read in low light conditions) were offset by frustration with low battery life, small screen size, limits on usage (i.e. not to be used in the bath), difficulty paging back and forth (‘getting lost on the iPAQ’), and the inferior sensation of using a PDA as opposed to the ‘tactile’ quality of books. In addition, some patrons voiced fears that e-books might supplant paper books and libraries themselves. In all, thirteen patrons indicated that the e-books had some advantages over books, while eighteen found that there were aspects of using e-books that they disliked as compared to books. Staff: The staff shared some concerns with users, identifying portability as a strength and low battery life (including the need to reformat devices after batteries ran out) as a weakness. In addition, some staff felt that some patrons preferred the e-book format for books on sensitive topics, as they provided more privacy in borrowing. Other staff concerns included the potential for users loading other software on the devices and the (presumably in the case of a full roll-out where users would download their own e-Books from home) lack of a broadband connection for some users. Conclusion – This study should be read as a case study of a trial of the Adobe Book and Palm e-book formats on Hewlett Packard iPAQ 1910 PDAs amongst a small group of public library (primarily mobile library) patrons. While the findings generally indicated that both staff and users found the technology too problematic to be adopted, the trial was confined to the hardware and software specified. Furthermore, since the sample surveyed was small and not randomly selected, it would be difficult to apply the study’s findings to the larger population (exact number not specified in the study) of housebound and mobile library users of the Essex County system. For those who are considering the introduction of similar technology in a public library setting, the final report on the larger project of which this study was a part is available on the British Library website: http://www.bl.uk/about/cooperation/laser-pubs.html

Bullough, Donald A. "A neglected early-ninth-century manuscript of the Lindisfarne Vita S. Cuthberti." Anglo-Saxon England 27 (December 1998): 105–37. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0263675100004828.

Full text
Abstract:
Without the anonymous Lindisfarne Vita S. Cuthberti, written less than two decades after the saint's death in 687, our knowledge of aspects of the Iona-Lindisfarne tradition in the early Northumbrian church and of Cuthbert's life and death would be even more limited than it is. Its medieval tradition is, however, very different from that of Bede's (prose) version of the Life, which, with its greater sense of literary form, composed in superior Latin, and with some additional or better evidence about its hero (although often omitting telling details), effectively drove the earlier work from its land of origin. The Lindisfarne vita's later, post-1100, manuscript testimonies are exclusively in a closely-related group of continental legendaries (passionals); and the one extant pre-1066 English copy was among the books gifted to Saint-Vaast, Arras, c. 1070, by the former abbot of Bath, Sæwold.

Abstract:
Purpose –The purpose of this study was to identify the reasons for due date book returns, borrowers' attitude when exposed to fines, library efforts to minimize fines and evaluate the effectiveness of fines in the library. Design/methodology/approach – This study used descriptive quantitative and qualitative approach. It was conducted at the Library of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Samples were purposively selected, involving undergraduate and postgraduate students batch 2011, 2012 and 2013 that never got fines and were still active. Findings – Borrowers had some reasons for overdue book returns, such as they forgot renewing the book, the book was booked by another user, they forgot the due date, they had no class to attend, had not finished reading, borrowed in short period of time, as well as other reasons, such as illness, a friend borrowed the book. So the term of the loan for 5 days was considered insufficient for them to read the books. Borrowers had to pay fines directly. If they were not yet able to pay the fines then they would not borrow books. Borrowers knew that overdue books would put other users at a disadvantage. Most of borrowers considered the fine to pay as much as Rp5,000.00 /day/book was high. But a few regarded it low. Borrowers considered that blocking the system was not effective for those who were late paying fines. The most effective effort that could be done in order that the borrower returned the books on time was providing online renewal system.

Abstract:
This paper will reveal the historical roots and Islamic development in British. The discussion covers various areas of study pertaining to historical situations. The study tends to focus on the search for the historical roots of Islam in the 7th to 15th and 16th-17th centuries, and also the development of Islamic institutions in British contemporer. The historical roots of Islam in Britain have existed since the discovery of several coins with the words 'laa ilaaha illallah' belonging to the King of Central England, Offa of Mercia, who died in 796. The history records that this Anglo Saxon King had trade ties with the peoples Muslim Spain, France and North Africa. In addition, also found in the 9th century the words 'bismillah' by Kufi Arabic on Ballycottin Cross. Indeed, in the eighth century history has noted that trade between Britain and the Muslim nations has been established. In fact, in 817 Muhammad bin Musa al-Khawarizmi wrote the book Shurat al-Ardhi (World Map) which contains a picture of a number of places in England. In the 12th century, when the feud with Pope Innocent III, King John established a relationship with Muslim rulers in North Africa. Later, in the era of Henry II, Adelard of Bath, a private teacher of the King of England who had visited Syria and Muslim Spain, translated a number of books by Arab Muslim writers into Latin. The same is done by Danel of Marley and Michael Scouts who translated Aristotle's works from Arabic. In 1386 Chaucer wrote in his book prologue Canterbury of Tales, a book that says that on the way back to Canterbury from the holy land, Palestine, a number of pilgrims visit physicists and other experts such as al-Razi, Ibn Sina and Ibnu Rusyd. At that time Ibn Sina's work, al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, had become the standard text for medical students until the seventeenth century. The development of Islam increasingly rapidly era after. In 1636 opened the Arabic language department at the University of Oxford. In addition, it is well known that the English King Charles I had collected Arabic and Persian manuscripts. In the era of Cromwell's post civil war, the Koran for the first time in 1649 was translated in English by Alexander Ross. In the nineteenth century more and more small Muslim communities, both immigrants from Africa and Asia, settled in port cities such as Cardif, South Shield (near New Castle), London and Liverpool. In the next stage, to this day, Islam in Britain has formally developed rapidly through the roles of institutions and priests, and the existence of Islam is also widely acknowledged by the kingdom, government, intellectuals, and the public at large.

Abstract:
Literature books can be a means of studying animals, the area is called zooliterature. The Heartland book series, by Lauren Brooke, shows a rehabilitation center for horses with emotional problems where therapies are used to find a cure for horses. Do the therapies used in fiction are real options for the equestrian sector? To answer this, a literature review was carried out to verify if there are scientific studies of medicinal plants, folk remedies, Bach flower remedies, aromatherapy and T-Touch® mentioned in the series. They can motivate research and practices for the mental health of animals, considering a critical and a scientific perspective.

Gangui, Alejandro. "No “explosion” in Big Bang cosmology: teaching kids the truth of what cosmologists really know." Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union 5, S260 (January 2009): 666–69. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s1743921311002985.

Abstract:
AbstractCommon wisdom says that cosmologists are smart: they have developed a theory that can explain the “origin of the universe”. Every time an astro-related, heavily funded “big-science” project comes to the media, naturally the question arises: will science –through this or that experiment– explain the origin of the cosmos? Can this be done with the LHC, for example? Will this dream machine create other universes? Of course, the very words we employ in cosmology reinforce this misconception: so Big Bang must be associated with an “explosion”, even if a “peculiar” one, as it took place nowhere (there was presumably no space before the beginning) and happened virtually in no time (supposedly, space-time was created on this peculiar –singular– event). Right, the issue sounds confusing. Let us imagine what kids may get out of all this.We have recently presented a series of brief astronomy and cosmology books aimed at helping both kids and their teachers in these and other arcane subjects, all introduced with carefully chosen words and images that young children can understand. In particular, Volume Four deals with the Big Bang and emphasizes the notion of “evolution” as opposed to the –wrong– notion of “origin” behind the scientific model. We then explain some of the pillars of Big Bang cosmology: the expansion of space that drags away distant galaxies, as seen in the redshift of their emitted light; the build-up of light elements in a cooling bath of radiation, as explained by primordial nucleosynthesis; and the existence and main features of the ubiquitous cosmic microwave background radiation, where theory and observations agree to a highly satisfactory degree.Of course, one cannot attempt to answer the “origins” question when it is well known that all theories so far break down close to this origin (if there was actually an origin). It is through observations, analyses, lively discussions and recognition of the basic limitations of current theories and ideas, that we are led to try and reconstruct the past and predict the future evolution of our universe. Just that. Sound science turns out to be much more attractive when we tell the truth of what we really know.

Abstract:
Craig A. Koester’s commentary on Revelation seeks after what Karl Barth referred to as the ‘strange new world within the Bible’. He seeks to locate the book fundamentally within the ancient conflict between the confession of Jesus as Lord and the Roman imperial cult. In the process, the reader comes to appreciate where the history of interpretation has detoured from the book’s original purpose. There are throughout the commentary a number of theological issues raised. Noteworthy are soteriology (the triumph of grace) and pneumatology (the meaning of the seven spirits). The essay seeks to explore these themes.

<div><table width="649" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><tbody><tr><td align="left" valign="top"><p>Abstract: Ilh}a&gt;q al-Masa&gt;’il bi Naz}a&gt;iriha is one of the methods used by Nahdlatul Ulama in resisting the opinion based on (manhaji) analytical concept of Islamic jurisprudence (the solution for complex social problems as the main purpose of Islamic shari’ah). As known that, up to now, ilh}a&gt;q has been understood as a process of answering a new case by the way of equating to the old one which is written in the book called al-mu’tabarah. Such ilh}a&gt;q has got many criticisms both from the definitions, procedures and its epistemogical footing. This paper is about to reveal how the NU clerics of Islam understand the concept of Ilh}a&gt;q}, what its epistemological footing was and how the concept was applied in discussing many cases (bah}th al-masa&gt;’il). Based on the writer’s study to several documents of decision results of NU that Ilh}a&gt;q did not only simplify to equate the new cases with the old ones that have been freely discussed in the books of al-mu’tabarah, but both cases should have similar legal substance, that is, both should be under the decrees of laws of al-qawa&gt; ‘id al-fiqhi&gt;yah. Thus, Ilh}a&gt;q is actually answering the problem by applying al-qawa&gt;‘id al-fiqhi&gt;yah, whereas the formulation al-qawa&gt;‘id al-fiqhi&gt;yah itself was set off from the examination of a number of furu&gt;’ generated by qiya&gt; s. This paper also found three variations of the implementation of Ilh}a&gt;q in bah}th al-masa&gt;’il. First, the application of Ilh}a&gt;q was without mentioning al-qawa&gt; ‘id al-fiqhi&gt;yah which covered new cases (mulh}aq) and the old case law that has been known in the books of fiqh (mulh}aq bih/attached to). Second, the application of Ilh}a&gt;q was accompanied by mentioning mulh}aq bih and al-qawa&gt; ‘id al-fiqhi&gt;yah. Third, the application of Ilh}a&gt;q, was only by the mentioning al-qawa&gt; ‘id al-fiqhi&gt;yah.</p></td></tr></tbody></table></div>

Abstract:
Prof. Dr. Ing. Gheorghe Maria from University Politehnica of Bucharest (UPBuc.), Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering is a valuable scientist in Romania, being the successor and continuer of the Romanian school of (bio)chemical reactors and reaction engineering, but also the creator of novel courses in the (bio)chemical engineer curricula at UPBuc. His research interests include a wide range of classic but also modern border fields, namely (bio)chemical reactors, kinetic modelling, bioinformatics, chemical reactors risk analysis, modelling dynamics of cell metabolic processes, of gene regulatory circuits, and of controlled drug release. Following the large number of international cooperations (20), its scientific productivity is impressive, including over 230 papers in ISI journals and intl. Conferences, 11 ISBN books (RO,USA), 5 teaching books (UPBuc., RO), and 6 ISBN book chapters abroad. Their practical realizations include the design and putting into operation of an industrial plant in Romania (at Petrochemical works /Refinery Brazi-Ploiesti, Romania, PWBP,1985), of a lab-scale pilot plant in Switzerland (Paul Scherer Inst., 1992-1998), or a safety-based optimization of a semi-batch (SBR) reactor (at CIBA-Novartis, Basel, 1994-1996). Based on these multiple contributions, it can be stated that Prof. Maria has had a significant impact on the science and the practice of Chemical and Biochemical Reaction Engineering in Romania and world-wide, his publications being well cited (Hirsch index 20, I10 index 49, more than 1400 citations). In 2019 he joined (unanimously by votes) the Romanian Academy. as a correspondent member.

Abstract:
Allocating appointment slots is presented as a new application for market design. Online booking systems are commonly used by public authorities to allocate appointments for visa interviews, driver’s licenses, passport renewals, etc. We document that black markets for appointments have developed in many parts of the world. Scalpers book the appointments that are offered for free and sell the slots to appointment seekers. We model the existing first-come-first-served booking system and propose an alternative batch system. The batch system collects applications for slots over a certain time period and then randomly allocates slots to applicants. The theory predicts and lab experiments confirm that scalpers profitably book and sell slots under the current system with sufficiently high demand, but that they are not active in the proposed batch system. We discuss practical issues for the implementation of the batch system and its applicability to other markets with scalping. (JEL C92, D47)
