Copper catalysts prepared using two kinds of supports (BaTiO3 and Fe2O3@BaTiO[Formula: see text] have been tested for soot combustion. Perovskite-type oxide BaTiO3 shows excellent properties as support but has small specific surface area. Fe2O3@BaTiO3 core/shell microspheres, as improved support of BaTiO3 support, were fabricated by a hydrothermal-annealing approach. Fe2O3@BaTiO3 support has large specific surface area, which optimizes the contact condition of the gas-soot-catalyst three-phase reaction. AbstractThe defect and interfacial structure in a Fe3O4/BaTiO3 heteroepitaxial bilayer was investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy. The results show that the Fe3O4 film grew epitaxially on BaTiO3. The orientation relationship between Fe3O4, BaTiO3 and MgO is [100]Fe3O4//[100]BaTi3O//[100]MgO and (010)Fe3O4//(010)BaTiO3//(010)MgO. An initial interfacial nucleation layer was formed that partially accommodated the lattice mismatch strain between BaTiO3 and MgO. However, for BaTiOs prepared using alkoxide precursors, the final microstructures of the films were found to be almost process independent. Nanocrystalline BaTiO3 particles are synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by the reaction of nanosized TiO2 colloids with aqueous solutions of Ba(OH)2 at 80°C. A dissolution-precipitation mechanism is proposed for the formation of BaTiOs by this route, because suspended TiO2 nano-particles dissolve into Ba(OH)2 solution, supersaturate the solution phase, and subsequently precipitate BaTiOs particles. The origin of the rough "raspberry-like" BaTiOs particles during growth stages can be explained by one of two mechanisms: (i) the morphological instability at the growth front during continuo

Ceramic capacitor materials are typically based on ferroelectric perovskite structures such as BaTiO3. The desirable electrical properties can be improved by isovalent additions of cations such as Ca2+ for Ba2+ and Zr4+ for Ti4+ These additions are aliostructural with the BaTiOg perovskite lattice and create a wide range of solid solutions and property modifications. Additions of ZrO2 both decrease and broaden the dielectric constant peak at the Curie temperature and have been shown to increase the lattice parameter of BaTiO3 resulting in a decrease in the c/a ratio. Polarization anisotropic diffraction has been observed in BaTiO3. In this process, two c-axis polarized laser beams intersecting in the crystal at the phase matching angle have been observed to produce two strong diffracted −1 order beams, a weak +1 beam, and a very weak −2 beam that are each polarized perpendicular to the c-axis of the crystal. In general, these diffracted beams are observed for any two incident beams that both have polarization components parallel to the c-axis. Also a single extraordinary beam propagating through a BaTiO3 crystal has been observed to produce a diverging rin

Abstract:
This report documents an investigation of the hydraulic effects of dikes on water levels in the Mississippi River between Natchez, MS, and Baton Rouge, LA, conducted for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mississippi Valley Division, Vicksburg, MS. The investigation was conducted using a previously calibrated Natchez-to-Baton Rouge Adaptive Hydraulics numerical model. The objectives were to alter roughness and height variables associated with the dikes and overbanks encompassed in the numerical model and evaluate their effects on water surface elevations. This academic exercise provides an indi

Abstract:
Bank caving rates and associated total sediment supply were calculated along the Lower Mississippi River from Cairo, IL, to Baton Rouge, LA, using historical maps between 1765 and 1992. Comparison of these maps reveals that the added sediment loads from bank erosion have greatly declined through time. During the Pre-cutoff period (1765–1931), the cumulative sediment supply from bank caving between Cairo, IL, and Baton Rouge, LA, ranged from about 395 million cubic yards/year (MCY/yr) to 535 MCY/yr with a median value of approximately 470 MCY/yr. The 1880-1931 period had the highest rate of sed
