Abstract:
Torpor is common in bats, but has historically been viewed as an energy-saving technique reserved for temperate and subarctic climates; however, torpor use is common across several tropical bat families. Central America hosts a great diversity of bats with approximately 150 species, yet data from this area are lacking compared with tropical Africa and Australia. We investigated thermoregulatory responses of bats from neotropical Belize and captured adult bats in the tropical forests of Lamanai Archeological Reserve, Belize. After a 12 h acclimation period, we recorded rectal temperature prior to and after exposing bats to an ambient temperature (Ta) of 7 °C for up to 2 h in an environmental chamber. All 11 species across four families expressed torpor to some degree upon exposure to cool temperatures. Individuals from Vespertilionidae defended the lowest resting body temperature (Tb) and showed the greatest decrease in Tb after acute exposure to low Ta. Our data help to establish a new spectrum of physiological ability for this group of mammals and shed light on the evolution of torpor and heterothermy. We show that energy conservation is important even in warm and energetically stable environmental conditions. Understanding how and why torpor is used in warm climates will help to better define paradigms in physiological ecology.

Abstract:
SUMMARYBats (Order: Chiroptera) have been widely studied as reservoir hosts for viruses of concern for human and animal health. However, whether bats are equally competent hosts of non-viral pathogens such as bacteria remains an important open question. Here, we surveyed blood and saliva samples of vampire bats from Peru and Belize for hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. (hemoplasmas), bacteria that can cause inapparent infection or anemia in hosts. 16S rRNA gene amplification of blood showed 67% (150/223) of common vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) were infected by hemoplasmas. Sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene amplicons revealed three novel genotypes that were phylogenetically related but not identical to hemoplasmas described from other (non-vampire) bat species, rodents, humans, and non-human primates. Hemoplasma prevalence in vampire bats was highest in non-reproductive and young individuals, did not differ by country, and was relatively stable over time (i.e., endemic). Metagenomics from pooled D. rotundus saliva from Peru detected non-hemotropic Mycoplasma species and hemoplasma genotypes phylogenetically similar to those identified in blood, providing indirect evidence for potential direct transmission of hemoplasmas through biting or social contacts. This study demonstrates vampire bats host several novel hemoplasmas and sheds light on risk factors for infection and basic transmission routes. Given the high frequency of direct contacts that arise when vampire bats feed on humans, domestic animals, and wildlife, the potential of these bacteria to be transmitted between species should be investigated in future work.

Abstract:
Many endothermic animals experience variable limb temperatures, even as they tightly regulate core temperature. The limbs are often cooler than the core at rest, but because the large locomotor muscles of the limbs produce heat during exercise, they are thought to operate at or above core temperature during activity. Bats, small-bodied flying mammals with greatly elongated forelimbs, possess wings with large surfaces lacking any insulating fur. We hypothesized that during flight the relatively small muscles that move the elbow and wrist operate below core body temperature because of elevated heat loss. We measured muscle temperature continuously in the small fruit bat Carollia perspicillata before and during wind tunnel flights, and discretely in diverse bats at rest in Belize. We found that bats maintained high rectal temperatures, but that there was a steep proximal-to-distal gradient in wing muscle temperature. Forearm muscles were 4–6°C cooler than rectal temperature at rest and approximately 12°C cooler during flights at an air temperature of 22°C. These findings invite further study into how bats and other endotherms maintain locomotor performance in variable environments, when some muscles may be operating at low temperatures that are expected to slow contractile properties.

Abstract:
Mercury (Hg) is a pervasive heavy metal that often enters the environment from anthropogenic sources such as gold mining and agriculture. Chronic exposure to Hg can impair immune function, reducing the ability of animals to resist or recover from infections. How Hg influences immunity and susceptibility remains unknown for bats, which appear immunologically distinct from other mammals and are reservoir hosts of many pathogens of importance to human and animal health. We here quantify total Hg (THg) in hair collected from common vampire bats ( Desmodus rotundus ), which feed on blood and are the main reservoir hosts of rabies virus in Latin America. We examine how diet, sampling site and year, and bat demography influence THg and test the consequences of this variation for eight immune measures. In two populations from Belize, THg concentrations in bats were best explained by an interaction between long-term diet inferred from stable isotopes and year. Bats that foraged more consistently on domestic animals exhibited higher THg. However, relationships between diet and THg were evident only in 2015 but not in 2014, which could reflect recent environmental perturbations associated with agriculture. THg concentrations were low relative to values previously observed in other bat species but still correlated with bat immunity. Bats with higher THg had more neutrophils, weaker bacterial killing ability and impaired innate immunity. These patterns suggest that temporal variation in Hg exposure may impair bat innate immunity and increase susceptibility to pathogens such as bacteria. Unexpected associations between low-level Hg exposure and immune function underscore the need to better understand the environmental sources of Hg exposure in bats and the consequences for bat immunity and susceptibility.

Abstract:
Thirty-six of the 70 species of bats known from Belize were recorded from the area around Lamanai, Orange Walk County: two in roosts and 34 in about 680 mist net hours that produced 560 captures. Day roosts used by 35 of the species were located using radio-tracking (Sturnira lilium, Platyrrhinus helleri, Centurio senex and Bauerus dubiaquercus) or general searching for roosts (Rhynchonycteris naso, Saccopteryx bilineata, Saccopteryx leptura, Dicli durus albus, Mimon bennettii, Micronycteris schmidtorum, Carollia brevicauda, Carollia perspicillata and Eptesicus furinalis). Data on the day roosts of 23 other species were determined from the literature. Most species reported from Lamanai (19) roosted in hollows, while others used foliage (6), tents (3), sheltered sites (2), crevices (2), open sites (1), and a few species used more than one type of day roost (hollows and crevices (1); hollows and foliage (1); hollows, foliage and tents (1)). The fauna consisted of 13 aerial foragers, 9 gleaners, 11 fruit/leaf eaters, one trawler, one flower-visitor and one blood-feeder. In day roost use and foraging behaviour, the Lamanai fauna did not differ significantly from that of Paracou, French Guiana, but both these locations differed from the bat fauna of Kruger National Park, South Africa, in foraging behaviour.

Abstract:
Human activities create novel food resources that can alter wildlife–pathogen interactions. If resources amplify or dampen, pathogen transmission probably depends on both host ecology and pathogen biology, but studies that measure responses to provisioning across both scales are rare. We tested these relationships with a 4-year study of 369 common vampire bats across 10 sites in Peru and Belize that differ in the abundance of livestock, an important anthropogenic food source. We quantified innate and adaptive immunity from bats and assessed infection with two common bacteria. We predicted that abundant livestock could reduce starvation and foraging effort, allowing for greater investments in immunity. Bats from high-livestock sites had higher microbicidal activity and proportions of neutrophils but lower immunoglobulin G and proportions of lymphocytes, suggesting more investment in innate relative to adaptive immunity and either greater chronic stress or pathogen exposure. This relationship was most pronounced in reproductive bats, which were also more common in high-livestock sites, suggesting feedbacks between demographic correlates of provisioning and immunity. Infection with both Bartonella and haemoplasmas were correlated with similar immune profiles, and both pathogens tended to be less prevalent in high-livestock sites, although effects were weaker for haemoplasmas. These differing responses to provisioning might therefore reflect distinct transmission processes. Predicting how provisioning alters host–pathogen interactions requires considering how both within-host processes and transmission modes respond to resource shifts. Abstract:
Ectoparasite host specificity can be influenced by factors such as the degree of host isolation and ectoparasite mobility. Host-site specificity can result from factors such as proximity to mates, competition, and host grooming behaviour. Ectoparasitic bat flies on bats from the Lamanai area of Belize were collected from hosts captured in mist nets to determine host specificity and host-site specificity. Bat grooming behaviour was also recorded and quantified. From 455 bats (25 species in five families), 773 bat flies (32 species in two families) were collected. Of 32 bat fly species, 25 were only found on 1 bat species, 6 were found on 2 species of the same genus, and 1 was found on 2 species of different genera (the latter appearing to be an accidental association). Specificity of the bat flies tended to follow the taxonomy of the bat hosts, not the ecological isolation of the host species, since bat species that often roost in polyspecific groups did not share bat fly species. Mobility of the bat flies was not related to host specificity. Host-site specificity of bat flies occurred for either fur or membrane on the host, and long hind legs and ctenidia appear to be morphological adaptations for living in fur. Bat grooming behaviour was consistent with the assumptions of a simulation model, which suggested that host grooming could be responsible for host-site segregation of bat flies.

Abstract:
By the beginning of the current century, there was heightened recognition that the Caribbean is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Yet, there was very little climate change science information for the region and at the scale of the small islands that make up most of the region. To fill the gap, a group of regional scientists representing three institutions and four territories (Barbados, Belize, Cuba, and Jamaica) initiated a project to provide dynamically downscaled climate change information for the Caribbean. The Providing Regional Climates for Impacts Studies (PRECIS)-Caribbean initiative was premised on a shared workload with goals to build regional capacity to provide climate change information for the region from within the region, to provide much needed climate information in the shortest possible time frame, and to create a platform for sharing the information as widely as possible. Ten years later offers the opportunity for retrospection and evaluation, particularly since a phase 2 initiative is being formulated. By both accident and design, the legacies of the PRECIS-Caribbean initiative include i) the positioning of the Caribbean to pose and answer for itself some of the emerging second-generation climate change questions; ii) the emergence of a regional template for capacity building in the sciences through cooperation; iii) an expanded regional capacity to undertake climate science; and iv) a significant body of climate change and climate science knowledge relevant to and at the scale of the Caribbean region.

Abstract:
We review the taxonomy of sponge-dwelling shrimp in the “Gambarelloides species group” within the genus Synalpheus Bate 1888, an informal but widely recognized group that is largely endemic to the western Atlantic and contains the majority of Synalpheus species in that region. The validity of most species described from the western Atlantic is reevaluated based on extensive new material from Carrie Bow Cay, Belize, and on examination of types of most described species. Twenty-eight species, including all those historically considered as part of the Gambarelloides group, are herein removed from Synalpheus and transferred to Zuzalpheus, n. gen., which is diagnosed by two synapomorphies: the dense brush of curved setae on the minor first pereopod, and the mesial lamellae on the coxae of the 3 rd pereopods. Six new species are described (Zuzalpheus dardeaui, Z. elizabethae, Z. idios, Z. kensleyi, Z. ul, Z. yano) and Z. osburni (Schmitt 1933) n. comb. is removed from synonymy with Synalpheus goodei. An identification key to all 34 species of West Atlantic Zuzalpheus is presented, as are known host associations, and color plates of most species.

Abstract:
Oil and gas well cements are multimineral materials that hydrate under high pressure and temperature. Their overall reactivity at early ages is studied by a number of techniques including through the use of the consistometer. However, for a proper understanding of the performance of these cements in the field, the reactivity of every component, in real-world conditions, must be analysed. To date, in situ high energy synchrotron powder diffraction studies of hydrating oil well cement pastes have been carried out, but the quality of the data was not appropriated for Rietveld quantitative phase analyses. Therefore, the phase reactivities were followed by the inspection of the evolution of non-overlapped diffraction peaks. Very recently, we have developed a new cell specially designed to rotate under high pressure and temperature. Here, this spinning capillary cell is used for in situ studies of the hydration of a commercial oil well cement paste at 150 bars and 150 °C. The powder diffraction data were analysed by the Rietveld method to quantitatively determine the reactivities of each component phase. The reaction degree of alite was 90% after 7 h, and that of belite was 42% at 14 h. These analyses are accurate, as the in situ measured crystalline portlandite content at the end of the experiment, 12.9 wt%, compares relatively well with the value determined ex situ by thermal analysis, i.e., 14.0 wt%. The crystalline calcium silicates forming at 150 bars and 150 °C are also discussed.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Chicxulub impact is commonly believed to have caused the Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary mass extinction and a thin impact spherule layer in the North Atlantic and Caribbean is frequently cited as proof. We evaluated this claim in the seven best North Atlantic and Caribbean Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary sequences based on high-resolution biostratigraphy, quantitative faunal analyses and stable isotopes. Results reveal a major Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary unconformity spanning most of Danian subzone P1a(1) and Maastrichtian zones CF1–CF2 (~400 ka) in the NW Atlantic Bass River core, ODP Sites 1049A, 1049C and 1050C. In the Caribbean ODP Sites 999B and 1001B the unconformity spans from the early Danian zone P1a(1) through to zones CF1–CF4 (~3 Ma). Only in the Demerara Rise ODP Site 1259B is erosion relatively minor and restricted to the earliest Danian zone P0 and most of subzone P1a(1) (~150 ka). In all sites examined, Chicxulub impact spherules are reworked into the early Danian subzone P1a(1) about 150–200 ka after the mass extinction. A similar pattern of erosion and redeposition of impact spherules in Danian sediments has previously been documented from Cuba, Haiti, Belize, Guatemala, south and central Mexico. This pattern can be explained by intensified Gulf stream circulation at times of climate cooling and sea level changes. The age of the Chicxulub impact cannot be determined from these reworked impact spherule layers, but can be evaluated based on the stratigraphically oldest spherule layer in NE Mexico and Texas, which indicates that this impact predates the Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary by about 130–150 ka.

Abstract:
AbstractTextiles formed a major part of any ancient Mesoamerican economy. Based on ethnohistory and iconography, the Maya were great producers of cloth for both internal and external use. However, the archaeological identification of textile production is difficult in any tropical area because of issues of preservation. This paper examines the evidence for the production and distribution of cloth that is found in the pre-Columbian Maya area and then focuses on archaeological data relative to textiles from the ancient Maya city of Caracol, Belize. Archaeology at Caracol has been carried out annually from 1985 to the present and has resulted in the collection of data that permits insight into the economic production and social distribution of cloth at the site. This is accomplished through examining the contexts and distributions of spindle whorls, bone needles, bone pins and hairpins, bone awls, and limestone bars. All of these artifacts can be related to weaving, netting, or cloth in some way. Importantly, perforated ceramic disks are not included in this grouping because of contextual information from the archaeological record that these artifacts likely functioned as backings for ear assemblages. Spindle whorls are the artifacts most clearly associated with textile production and 57 of these have been recovered at Caracol, 38 of them in 20 different burials. Several of these interments are of high-status women placed in the most important architectural constructions at the site. The contextual placement of these burials stresses not only the link between women and weaving, but also the high status associated with such an activity, thus signaling the importance of cloth and spinning in ancient Maya society. The prevalence of female interments in the major ritual buildings at Caracol also reflects the importance of women to Maya social structure during the Classic period (a.d.250–900), pointing to difficulties in hieroglyphically based interpretations of ancient Maya social organization and suggesting that the traditional focus on males in the sociopolitical organization of the Classic Maya is incorrect.

Because Gus Dur's humanism really departed from the deepest values of Islam, which transcended ethnicity, territoriality, to the limit of statehood.</p><p><strong> Abstrak</strong></p><p>Sosok Gus Dur merupakan sosok yang unik dan pemikirannya tergolong tipikal.

Abstract:
The understanding of a hadith that tends to be textual, without considering all the aspects that surround it, sometimes creates misinterpretations. One example of what became viral at the end of 2017 was nikah mut‘ah, which was made viral by the online site nikahsirri.com. The issue of nikah mut‘ah then became the spotlight of various parties. Nikah mut‘ah is a marriage that is limited by time. In understanding the hadith about nikah mut‘ah, the scholars have different opinions, some say that nikah mut‘ah is haram and some say that marriage is permissible. So in order to understand the hadith, a methodology is needed. This article is a literature research-based research using the thematic methodology in understanding the related traditions about nikah mut‘ah. So, in conclusion, the mut‘ah marriage that was allowed by the Prophet was during the period before the stability of Islamic law, that is, it was allowed at the beginning of Islam when traveling and in war. He made concessions for his friends who were fighting in Allah‘s way to get married within a certain time limit, for fear that they would fall into adultery. However, then mut‘ah marriage was forbidden.

Abstract: This article discusses on the attitude of the Jews who claim to be the chosen people sourced from theological doctrine handed down from one generation to the next. Although existentially Jews acknowledge other nations, but it was limited to the recognition of their existence, not on fundamental rights possessed. With that understanding, attitude and outlook superior to the other nations causing them easily perform a variety of cruel acts beyond the limits of humanity. History has recorded that the relationship between Muslims with Jews always tinged tensions for the sake of suspense. Of course, the tensions arising from unfair attitude that made the Jews in many aspects. Al-Quran and Hadith following historical facts, as the main source of this article, informing us that the attitudes of the Jews against Muslims tend pejorative other than brutal. Criticism for the sake of criticism and even physical violence often they are addressed to Muslims. It happens in every time and opportunity, not only at the time of the apostles before the Prophet Muhammad, on his future until the time we were the attitude of the Jewish people never change. Maucieri, Dominique G., Austin James Ashbaugh, and Jessica M. Theodor. "Sexual dimorphism in bat wing morphology – variation among foraging styles." Canadian Journal of Zoology, August 14, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/cjz-2021-0035.

Full text
Abstract:
Sexual dimorphism can lead to differences in foraging style among conspecifics due to morphological differences. Within bats, maneuverability and speed of flight are influenced by wing shape and size, which may differ between sexes. Female bats gain about 30% of their body mass during pregnancy, affecting their agility and flight efficiency. To fill the same foraging niche as males, pregnant female bats would require wing size and/or shape modifications to maintain maneuverability. We investigated sexual dimorphism in bat wing morphology and how it varies among foraging guilds. Wing photos of male and female adult bats (19 species) in Canada, Belize, and Dominica were analyzed using 2D geometric morphometrics, wing loading, and aspect ratios. Nonpregnant female bats had higher wing loading than males, suggesting they are less maneuverable than males. Additionally, mass increases during pregnancy may not permit female bats to forage as male conspecifics do. Wing shape differed minimally among foraging guilds with only frugivores differing significantly, from all other guilds. Further studies should investigate how female bats forage during their reproductive cycle and determine how frugivore wings differ and whether there are individual differences in wing shape that are not consistent among bat species.

"Inter- and intra-specific variation in hair cortisol concentrations of Neotropical bats." Conservation Physiology 9, no. 1 (January 1, 2021). http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/conphys/coab053.

Abstract:
Abstract Quantifying hair cortisol has become popular in wildlife ecology for its practical advantages for evaluating stress. Before hair cortisol levels can be reliably interpreted, however, it is key to first understand the intrinsic factors explaining intra- and inter-specific variation. Bats are an ecologically diverse group of mammals that allow studying such variation. Given that many bat species are threatened or have declining populations in parts of their range, minimally invasive tools for monitoring colony health and identifying cryptic stressors are needed to efficiently direct conservation efforts. Here we describe intra- and inter-specific sources of variation in hair cortisol levels in 18 Neotropical bat species from Belize and Mexico. We found that fecundity is an important ecological trait explaining inter-specific variation in bat hair cortisol. Other ecological variables such as colony size, roost durability and basal metabolic rate did not explain hair cortisol variation among species. At the individual level, females exhibited higher hair cortisol levels than males and the effect of body mass varied among species. Overall, our findings help validate and accurately apply hair cortisol as a monitoring tool in free-ranging bats.

Abstract:
The possibility of obtaining effective highly dispersed additives from natural wollastonite is substantiated and their influence on the properties of fine-grained concrete is investigated. On the basis of wollastonite, a complex micro-filler with particle sizes up to 100 microns was developed, obtained by joint grinding with quartz sand in a 3:1 ratio in a ball mill in the presence of an anionic surfactant naphthalene-formaldehyde type C-3 and a calcium stearate hydrophobizer technical C-17. A suspension of wollastonite with a modal particle diameter of 405 nm was obtained by pre-grinding wollastonite and anionic surfactant in a ball mill, with their further ultrasonic treatment in a bath-type activator. Mathematical models of the dependence of compression and bending strength on the content of the initial components are developed. It is established that the complex microfill leads to an increase in the strength of fine-grained concrete in bending by 2 times, in compression by 1.7 times with its content in the composition of fine-grained concrete in the amount of 10% by weight of cement. Wollastonite suspension increases the bending strength of fine-grained concrete to 3.1 MPa, compression to 57.8 MPa. The results of qualitative x-ray phase analysis showed that the total intensity of diffraction maxima of not fully hydrated alite C3S, belite C2S grains and their aggregates in cement stone with wollastonite decreases by 1.5-2 times compared to the control composition. This is most likely due to the amorphous nature of the wollastonite surface after grinding in a ball mill and ultrasonic dispersion in a bath-type activator. In addition, such particles are the centers of crystallization. Their needle-like shape contributes to the reinforcement of the structure by crystallizing new formations of cement stone.
