Abstract:

The Dignity of Imagination. Alexander Baumgarten and the Context ofthe Birth of Aesthetics”. The paper deals with the role of imagination in the disciplinaryconstitution of Aesthetics. For this purpose it is divided into three sections:the first one focuses on showing how imagination acquires a certain dignity at aspecific moment in the history of western thought; the second section shows howthis new status will allow, within the special historical context of Enlightenment,the birth of aesthetic reflection lead by Alexander Baumgarten. The third sectionof this paper focuses on showing how the aesthetic perspective implies decidedlychoosing to give reflexive sensitivity a significant spot within the comprehensionthat man has of himself and of the world in which he is immersed.
El artículo trata del rol de la imaginación en la constitución disciplinariade la Estética. Presenta tres partes: la primera se concentra en mostrar de quémanera la imaginación adquiere dignidad en determinado momento de la historiadel pensamiento occidental; la segunda parte muestra cómo este nuevo estatuspermitirá, dentro de un contexto histórico especial, la Ilustración, el nacimientode la reflexión estética de la mano de Alexander Baumgarten. La tercera parte seconcentra en mostrar cómo la perspectiva estética implica una decidida opción pordarle a la sensibilidad reflexiva un significativo lugar dentro de la comprensiónque tiene el hombre de sí mismo y del mundo en el que está inmerso.

Abstract:

Le présent ouvrage souhaite montrer que la création de l’esthétique philosophique par Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten, ainsi que la multiplication des écrits théoriques sur l’art orientés à partir de la problématique du goût, sont deux tentatives différentes de répondre à la question métaphysique du dualisme des substances ainsi qu’aux problèmes posés par leurs interactions réciproques. L’enjeu de cette recherche est double. Il s’agit, d’une part, de donner la réplique à Kant qui, dans un note devenue célèbre de la CRP, affirme qu’« esthétique » et « critique du goût » sont des termes synonymes. Il sera démontré que ces deux termes ne sont pas synonymes, qu’esthétique philosophique et critique du goût ne sont pas deux manières équivalentes de questionner l’art, bien qu’elles partagent, sur le plan ontologique, un certain nombre de présupposés. D’autre part, et c’est là que l’enjeu historiographique croise l’enjeu philosophique, nous verrons que ces présupposés ne sont pas propres au 18e siècle mais proviennent d’une longue tradition des rapports texte-image, du statut théologique et ontologique de l’image, de la représentation sculptée, de la mímêsis. Aussi, l’intérêt des questions formulées à partir du constat de l’échec patent de la métaphysique de l’Art et du caractère très largement insuffisant des esthétiques du goût dépasse largement le cadre du siècle des Lumières
This book intends to demonstrate that the creation of philosophical aesthetics by A. G. Baumgarten, as well as the multiplication of theoretical writings about art guided by the problematics of taste, are two different ways to propose a solution to solve the metaphysical question of the dualism of substances and the problem of theirs mutual interactions. The stake is double. First, it is a response to Kant, who says in a CPR’s note which became famous that « aesthetics » and « critics of taste » are the same thing. It will be shown that it is not the case, although those two approaches share similar presuppositions. We will also see, and on that point the historiographic stake meets the philosophical one, that those presuppositions are not specific to the 18th century but came from the long tradition of text-image relations, of theological and ontological status of image, of carved representation, of mímêsis. So, the interest of the questions which are formulated because of the evident failure of metaphysics of Art and the failings of aesthetics of taste exceeds widely the framework of Enlightenment

Abstract:

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo reconstruir o conceito de ciência do sensível na obra do filosofo alemão Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714- 1762). Partimos do pressuposto de que a investigacão das faculdades do conhecimento empreendida pelo autor na Metafisíca (1739) pode revelar o alcance e a finalidade da Estética (1750/58), a qual se encontra mais comprometida com as possibilidades em geral de expressão do belo do que com a definicão de uma teoria do objeto artístico em sua particularidade. Esse último aspecto, na verdade, pode prejudicar a interpretacão de sua obra, pois assume que ela estipula a existencia um ideal de beleza atemporal. Para Baumgarten, os princípios que regem o conhecimento sensível coincidem com as regras de expressão do belo, tal como aquelas definidas nas poéticas e retóricas antigas, mas apenas na medida em que eles podem ser derivados das verdades metafisicas.
This study investigated the concept of asthetics as science of sensibility in the work from the philosopher Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714- 1762). We believe that the investigation of the cognitive faculties what happens in Metaphysica (1739) can reveal with someone precision the wasteness and finality of Aesthetics (1750/1758), situated between theorie of art and philosophy of life. Our argument is that the subordination of these science make she incapable to consider directly the artistic object in your particularity. While this justify the opposition that find the methaphysics of beauty in the posterity, indicated the emptiness what come face to face every theorie of art that not introduce yours cognitive pretexts.

Abstract:

Die Dissertation diskutiert die kantische Metaphysik des Geistes anhand der in der Kritik der reinen Vernunft und den aus dem Nachlass veröffentlichten Vorlesungen zur Metaphysik geleisteten Auseinandersetzung mit der rationalen Psychologie seiner Vorgänger, insbesondere Baumgarten und Wolff. Es wird dafür argumentiert, dass Kant die Meinungen seiner Vorgänger nicht uneingeschränkt zurückweist, sondern die Vorstellung der Seele als Substanz in seine Diskussion der Personalität, mentaler Kräfte, der Möglichkeit einer Körper-Seele Interaktion sowie der Willensfreiheit teilweise beibehält. Ein Verdienst dieser Interpretation ist es, die Kontinuität zwischen Kants vorkritischer Position und seiner kritischen Philosophie aufzuzeigen. Darüber hinaus soll aber auch auf eine wichtige Funktion der kantischen Metaphysik des Geistes für seine praktische Philosophie hingewiesen werden.
This dissertation considers Kant’s discussions of the metaphysics of mind in his critical encounter with the rational psychology of Baumgarten, Wolff, and others in the Critique of Pure Reason and his lectures on metaphysics. In contrast with prevailing interpretations, I argue that Kant does not offer a straightforward rejection of his predecessors but that he retains some commitments to the substantial view of the self and modifies others within the framework of transcendental idealism to provide accounts of the nature of personhood, mental powers, the possibility of mind-body interaction, and the possibility of freedom of the will. This interpretation of Kant reveals continuity between Kant’s pre-critical and critical positions on the metaphysics of mind and points forward to a role for aspects of Kant’s metaphysics of mind in his practical philosophy.

Abstract:

C'est semble-t-il, en problematisant la presentation intuitive que kant remet en cause l'ontologie wolffienne et reinvente la notion de transcendantal. Pourtant, cette problematisation n'est jamais directement thematisee pour elle-meme dans l'oeuvre critique. Ce paradoxe conduit a etudier le probleme de la presentation dans la critique de la raison pure, de maniere a ressaisir sa place et sons sens dans la pensee kantienne. Apres avoir etudie la place de l'ontologie et de la connaissance intuitive dans les pensees de wolff et de baumgarten, nous etudions la maniere dont l'oeuvre pre-critique est determinee par ce contexte et tente de resoudre les apories qu'il fait naitre. Nous pouvons ensuite aborder la critique de la raison pure et examiner l'originalite de la reponse qu'elle apporte. C'est fondamentalement alors la maniere dont cette oeuvre deploie sa propre unite systematique, et parvient a la justifier, que nous etudions
It is by formulating as a problem the concept of intuitive representation that kant reassesses wolff's ontology and reinvents the notion of the transcendantal. But the problem is never set out in a directly thematic manner in his critical writings. As a result of this paradox, the representation problem has to be studied in the critique of pure reason if one is to understand correctly its position and meaning in the wider context of kantian thought. Having examined the place of ontology and intuitive knowledge in the works of wolff and baumgarten, we are able to look at the way in which the pre-critical work is determined by this context and seeks to resolve the aporias which it generates. This enables us to study the critique of pure reason and to understand the originality of the approach it takes. The fundamental issue for study now becomes the way in which the work achieves a systematic unity of its own and supports it through argument

Abstract:

This dissertation examines pre-Kantian rational philosophy and the development of the discipline of aesthetics in the North German Enlightenment. With emphasis on the historical conception of the physiological and psychological experience of music, this project determines the function of music both privately and socially in the eighteenth century. As a result, I identify the era of rational aesthetics (ca.1750-1800) as a music-historical period unified by the aesthetic function and metaphysical experience of music, which inform the underlying motivation for musical styles, genres, and means of expression, leading to a more meaningful and compelling historical periodization. The philosophy of Alexander Baumgarten, Johann Georg Sulzer, and others enable definitions of the experience of beautiful objects and those concepts related to music composition, listening, and taste, and determine how rational aesthetics impacted the practice, function, and ultimately the prevailing style of music in the era. The construction, style, and performance means of the free fantasia, the most personal and expressive genre of the era, identify its function as the private act of solitude, or a musical meditation. An examination of pleasure societies establishes the role of music in performance and discussion in both social gatherings and learned musical clubs for conveying the morally good, which results in the spread of good taste. Taken together, the complimentary practices of private and social music played a significant role in eighteenth-century life for developing the self, through personal taste, and society, through a morally good culture.
