Abstract:

Baumgartner, Weiß, and Schindler (1998) introduced a novel nonparametric test for the two-sample comparison that is superior to commonly used tests such as the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. A modification of the novel test statistic can be used for one-sided comparisons based on ordinal data. Such comparisons frequently occur in psychological research, and the Wilcoxon test is often recommended for their analysis. Here, the two tests were compared in a simulation study. According to this study the tests have a similar type I error rate, but the modified Baumgartner-Weiß-Schindler test is more powerful than the Wilcoxon test.

It was J. E. Baumgartner who in [1] proved that when a weakly compact cardinal is Lévy-collapsed to ω2 the new ω2 inherits some of the large cardinal properties; e.g. if S is a stationary set of ω-limits in ω2 then for some α < ω2, S ∩ α is stationary in α. Later S. Shelah extended this to the following theorem: if a supercompact cardinal κ is Lévy-collapsed to ω2, then in the resulting model the following holds: if S ⊆ λ is a stationary set of ω-limits and cf(λ) ≥ ω2 then there is an α. < λ such that S ∩ α is stationary in α, i.e. stationary reflection holds for countable cofinality (see [1] and [3]). These theorems are important prototypes of small cardinal compactness theorems; many applications and generalizations can be found in the literature. One might think that these results are true for sets with an uncountable cofinality μ as well, i.e. when an appropriate large cardinal is collapsed to μ++. Though this is true for Baumgartner's theorem, there remains a problem with Shelah's result. The point is that the lemma stating that a stationary set of ω-limits remains stationary after forcing with an ω2-closed partial order may be false in the case of μ-limits in a cardinal of the form λ+ with cf(λ) < μ, as was shown in [8] by Shelah. The problem has recently been solved by Baumgartner, who observed that if a universal box-sequence on the class of those ordinals with cofinality ≤ μ exists, the lemma still holds, and a universal box-sequence of the above type can be added without destroying supercompact cardinals beyond μ.

Im Fokus meines Forschungsinteresses und meiner Arbeit stehen Sprachbildung und -förderung durch ästhetische Erfahrung. Meine Forschung und meine Arbeit in literarischen Kunstprojekten mit Kindern haben mich davon überzeugt, dass Sprache in mimetischen Prozessen erworben wird. Die Verständigung wurzelt in mimetischer Begabung des Menschen (vgl. Gebauer & Wulf 2003; Karimi 2016). Mit dem Bildungswissenschaftler Alex Baumgartner verstehe ich Erfahrung „als ein Sich-Einlassen auf das zu begreifende Objekt“ (Baumgartner 1999: 195). Ästhetische Erfahrung wird durch die Voraussetzungen unseres Wahrnehmens konstituiert. Sich auf einen Gegenstand ästhetisch einzulassen, um ihn zu begreifen, setzt nämlich voraus, dass er leiblich und sinnlich erkannt wird. Eine ästhetische Erfahrung ist eine sinnlich-sinnhafte und emotionale Erfahrung. Verankert ist sie im mimetischen Gestaltungsvermögen des Menschen an sich selbst und an der Welt (vgl. Mollenhauer 1999; Baumgartner 1999; Wulf et al. 2005, 2007, 2014a). Wulf führt dazu aus: „Die mimetische Begegnung mit der Welt erfolgt mit allen Sinnen, die im Verlauf dieser Prozesse ihre Sensibilität entfalten“ (Wulf 2007: 95). Dabei wird der menschliche Körper zum Ort der erlebten Bilder-, Klangkörper-, Tast-, Geruchs- und Geschmackswelten (vgl. Wulf et al. 1999, 2005, 2007, 2014a, 2014b). <p>Em 14/10/2012 Felix Baumgartner fez seu salto recorde na atmosfera. A partir do vídeo que apresenta medidas de tempo, velocidade, altitude e aceleração durante todo o salto recorde são discutidos diversos aspectos da Mecânica envolvida no feito bem com tópicos de física da Atmosfera Terrestre, relevantes para a compreensão do movimento de descida desde a estratosfera. Além dos três recordes mundialmente reconhecidos - maior altitude inicial, maior extensão de queda e obtenção de velocidade supersônica por um paraquedista - demonstra-se quantitativamente que também ocorreu queda livre, com aceleração em acordo com o valor previsto teoricamente pela <italic>International Gravity Formula</italic>, durante mais de 20 s, por mais de 3 km, constituindo-se certamente em outro recorde. Apresenta-se também um modelo para a velocidade na etapa de descida sem paraquedas que é consistente com os dados do vídeo.</p>

Abstract:

The Hermann grid and the scintillating grid are examples of brightness-contrast illusions. The scintillating grid consists of a Hermann grid with bright disks about 1.4 times the diameter of the grid elements superimposed upon the intersections. The resulting scintillation effect can be described as striking illusory spots, darker than the background, perceived as flashing within the bright disks with each flick of the eye. Although the scintillation effect is different from the classical Hermann grid illusion, one prerequisite for its occurrence is the presence of a grid eliciting the Hermann grid illusion (Schrauf et al, Vision Research in press). At the 12th ECVP we showed that the Hermann grid illusion can be reduced by bright diagonals within the squares of the grid which have the effect of suppressing the 45°/135° components of the Fourier spectrum (Lingelbach et al, 1989 Perception18 536 – 537). In a pilot study we successively reduced the length of the diagonals, and found that this suppression works well even if the diagonals are reduced to small tips near the grid intersections. According to Baumgartner's receptive-field account (Baumgartner, 1960 Pflügers Archiv272 21 – 22), such elements should cause additional inhibition, thus decreasing the neuronal discharge rate and corresponding illusory percept. This is not the case: if any illusion is perceived, it is considerably weaker. The strength of the scintillation effect is similarly reduced by this manipulation. Thus the present results cannot easily be accounted for by Baumgartner's model.

Resumo Nas últimas décadas, a pesquisa no campo das políticas públicas tem mostrado que a ação de indivíduos (ou grupos) denominados "empreendedores de políticas públicas" constitui um aspecto central no processo de produção de políticas. Com base na análise da bibliografia teórica mais recente, este estudo tem por objetivo analisar o conceito de empreendedor de políticas públicas, investigando o papel desse importante ator em três modelos teóricos: o modelo de múltiplos fluxos de John Kingdon, o modelo de equilíbrio pontuado de Baumgartner e Jones e o modelo de coalizões de defesa de Sabatier e Jenkins-Smith. A análise mostra que há duas dimensões fundamentais na atuação dos empreendedores. Em primeiro lugar, esses atores assumem um papel importante na defesa das ideias relacionadas à definição dos problemas e à estruturação dos debates a respeito de soluções. Em segundo lugar, o empreendedor é um elemento essencial nos mecanismos explicativos sobre mudanças rápidas dos modelos de Kingdon e Baumgartner e Jones. Assim, o estudo explora as características do conceito de empreendedor de políticas públicas nesses modelos teóricos, bem como aponta os limites e contribuições do conceito para a compreensão do processo de produção de políticas públicas.
