Abstract:
Introduction The quality of the life in patients requiring long term hemodialysis is directly proportional to the long-term patency of their vascular access. Basilic vein transposition for vascular access (BAVA) represents a suitable option for creating a tertiary native vascular access for hemodialysis on the upper extremities for patients requiring long term hemodialysis. The purpose of the study is to compare BAVAs with arteriovenous grafts (AVG). Method Data collection was based on selecting all of the patients with BAVA created in the time period in between January 1996 and August 2011. A questionnaire was created and sent to the selected hemodialysis centers. The resulting set of data was statistically analyzed and evaluated. Results In the time period between 1 January 1996 and August 2011, arteriovenous access for hemodialysis was created in 6754 patients (7203 procedures in total). Out of these patients, 175 BAVAs were created. Our patient database of those undergoing the BAVA procedure consisted of 98 females (56%) and 77 males (44%) with an average age of 64.5 years. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 60% (105 patients). Primary patency after 12 months was 68.8%, 24 months 59.7%, 36 months 53.8, 48 months 53.8%, and 60 months 50%. Primary assisted patency after 12 months was 89.9%, 24 months 84.6%, 36 months 77.8%, 48 months 77.9%, 60 months 70.8%. Secondary patency after 12 months was 89.4%, 24 months 86.9%, 36 months 81%, 48 months 78.9%, 60 months 75.7%. Twenty-nine BAVAs (16.5%) were obliterated. Conclusion Patients benefit from this type of procedure due to the longer patency of a native arteriovenous access, as well as a lower incidence of infectious complications.

Abstract:
Phased arrays for use in future multifunction systems require wideband elements capable of wide angle scanning. Here we describe the design of a Balance Antipodal Vivaldi Antenna for use in large phased array antenna apertures. The BAVA element height and the array lattice spacing are about λ/2 at the high frequency end of a grating-lobe free operating band. BAVA elements do not require connection with adjacent elements and are therefore attractive for use in phased arrays with modular construction.

Abstract:
This paper has introduced the concept of UWB antenna in array arrangements. The four elements of Balance Antipodal Vivaldi Antenna (BAVA) has been used for planar and H-plane array configuration in this research. Each single element of BAVA Antenna is printed on the glass-reinforced epoxy laminate material (FR4) along an overall thickness of 1.57mm and εr=4.3 respectively. The optimized measurement of each particular element is 60.75mm x 66mm approximatel. Further the parametric evaluation of four BAVA elements in different planes has been observed in this paper. The placement of array elements has almost coverd entire UWB frequency range and appropriate reflection coefficient which is better than -10dB has been established in both combinations. According to simulation results, the array elements in planar arrangement presenting a suitable reflection and works well at 3.2GHz frequency while the arrangement in H-plane the array elements works well at 7GHz of frequency. In planar arrangement, the operating frequency of antenna elements is shifting as results of the distance among inter elements which increase in wavelength. In H-plane arrangement an antenna elements generate additional gain up to 10.2 dB with good radiation patterns as compared to the planar plane. The CSTMWS simulation software has been used for antenna structural design and parametric verification.

Abstract The Sidis are Indians of African descent. Sidi communities reside in different regions of India, mostly in Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Maharashtra. My films and research focus on the Sidi community of Gujarat. The Sidi oral history community delineates its genealogy to the Abyssinian Sufi saint Bava Gor, whose shrine is in Gujarat. My family and I were deeply connected with the healing spiritual legacy of Sidi saint Bava Gor from the 1950s; however, my filmic journey to Sidis began in 1990s. In this article, I examine the social and economic concerns of the Sidi community, as well as some of the issues confronting me as a film maker as I attempted to represent Sidis on film.

Abstract:
Mario Bava and Dario Argento are closely associated with the giallo movie genre which they have contributed to invent and renew. Thoug they have been kept in the margins of Cinema history, these two directors have elaborated complex works of art : these creations bring up a double modernity : singular by their styles, they also participate to and from the spirit of their time. Particularly rich of visual arts experimentations, their movies are considered here for their links with other arts. The notion of impurity, as risen by André Bazin, then refined by Guy Scarpetta and also by Denis Lévy when he distinguishes two categories of impurity : local and global, as the main operator able to link the cinematographic creation to its artistical off-camera, including the most diverse approaches of art creation. Esatblishing these sensible proximities bring out a true game of esthetical resonances between the works of both directors. Within four great axes (movement, figuration, materials, spaces), this work aims to reveal little known aspects of their movies directed between 1956 and 1987. Within this approach, they face litterary and scenical domains but also contemporary music, architecture and the whole field of the visual arts. Therefore the main point of this thesis is to demonstrate that beyond the mutual and concomitent interest theses works of art show for the correspondences, the junctions and encounters between artistical practices, the worksof Mario Bava and Dario Argento , by their tendancy to keep situating in « crossroads », paradoxicaly attest of a properly cinematographic thinking

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research examines Italian horror cinema from its origins (1957) until the late 1980s, with particular focus on the productions of three Italian directors: Riccardo Freda, Mario Bava and Dario Argento. My research is divided into two distinct parts: theoretical and analytical. By adopting a variety of theories, which mainly follow three hermeneutic traditions – psychoanalytical (Freud, 1919; Abraham & Torok, 1994), pragmatist (Wiley, 1994) and social interactionist (Collins, 2000, 2004) – the first section of my project aims to outline three distinct phases of the circulation of horror symbols. The second part is devoted to a series of case studies, which function as exemplary illustrations of the elaborated theoretical framework. In order to define the field of analysis, my attention focuses on four thematic discourses: spaces, objects, identities and actions. A critical examination of selected films from Freda, Bava and Argento’s productions delineate the directors’ constant and extensive use of intertextual references to symbols already circulated at a first level. The theoretical framework of this thesis, in conjunction with filmic analysis, will contribute to a more exhaustive understanding of the archaeology of the genre. After establishing that singular theories do not supply sufficient information on genre issues, this study aims to address the gap in critical knowledge, reviewing the potentiality of the Italian horror cinema through a multidisciplinary discourse. An interpretation of the Italian horror genre can only exist in relation to a series of interplays with a multitude of factors. Hence, discussing the genre through filmic and extra-filmic schemes (including editing and marketing processes, censorship and spectatorship issues and intertextual references to external and internal archives of horror), this work acknowledges interactionism as a space of debate, which, encompassing several perspectives at a time (psychoanalytic, pragmatist, sociologic, etc.) allows a dialogic and exhaustive investigation of the Italian horror genre.

Abstract:

This study is a conscious attempt at opening up the discussion on the Italian giallo film of the 1960’s & 1970’s. Part of its mission is examine views and writings currently available on the giallo and using these to analyse the body of films known as the giallo. It is also an attempt at the generic definition seeing the giallo as a series of thriller films according to Tzvetan Todorov’s model and in depth discussing the influence of the horror story and the whodunit. Beyond that it is a close look upon the form and devices of giallo narration, with focus upon the role of the eyewitness, focalization and point of view as first person narration. The study also traces the giallo’s influences interdisciplinary including placing it in the cultural context of the Italian adult comics known as fumetti neri. The study also includes a close look upon the idea of the eroticised violent set piece tracing it to the French theatre of horror – the Grand Guignol. Furthermore the study addresses the concept of seriality as understood in reference to the giallo. Finally the study examines the role of the giallo hero and suggests that the giallo is posing existential questions, and can be understood as existential suspense thrillers. The findings are exemplified through a wide scope of films including brief references and longer analytic examples elaborating on topical discussions in this developing field of study.

Abstract:
Controlled dispatch of selected staff to factories abroad in the years 1938--1941 played an important role in the history of Bata Shoe Company. Due to that fact the company man-aged to preserve civilian character of the production despite the on-going Second World War. The organizing of the whole process was not a simple task, it was necessary to harmonize actions of several organizational units. The selection of certain employees eligible for the transfers to foreign countries was conducted by sophisticated methodology, but still some of the top manager's decisions were quite controversial. First of all it involved the transfers of Jewish employees, because Chairman of the Board Jan Antonin Bata considered himself to be the rescuer of the Jews. Nevertheless top managers of the group were strictly pragmatic even in this matter and it is difficult to deduce that one of the objectives of the controlled staff transfers was the protection of this national minority. We can see the same rational approach to employees of the German origin. One of the unexplained questions is the Jan Antonin Bata's unclear relationship with Nazi leaders. I tried to deal with all of these questions in this thesis and I tried to contribute to the current debate about the Bata Group's activities during the Second World War.

Abstract:
Nowadays, many parametric systems support history-based , constraint-based and feature-based modelling. Unfortunately, most systems fail during the reevaluation phase when various kind of topological changes occur. This issue is known as “persistent naming”. It refers to the problem of identifying entities in an initial parametric model and matching them in the reevaluated model. Several solutions have been proposed to solve this problem, but they remain insufficient. In this thesis, we focus on the persistent and homogeneous naming of entities in any dimension (vertices, edges, aggregates of edges, faces; aggregates of faces (“shells”), volumes, aggregates of volumes, etc) and entities resulting from the intersection of non-planar objects. To do that, we propose a hierarchical platform which gathers, by relations of aggregations, entities of any dimension. Our idea is then, to begin by naming (i. E. ) to characterize and to map) the smaller usable entities: the edges. The management of names of the edges is mainly carried out by a graph tracing the evolution of these entities during the process of parametric modelling. Then, we used the computed matching between these edges by exploiting the hierarchical and aggregative structure of the topological model, in order to deduce the matching between the entities of higher dimension. Our solution is implemented on a geometric kerned based on the generalized maps model

Abstract:
HOUSING TYRESÖ   Between Bollmora social housing complex and the old highroad one find Tyresö gymnasium. Our starting point is to demolish the school, “cremate” its material in to brick-ash and spread it as a red running track along the existing highroad, permission to forget in order to remember. The gymnasium is understood as part of the existing landscape, it only changes form and place.   What happens if you turn off a layer in AutoCad? Presence through absence. Depth through layers. Represented in site model- terrain, roads and fields, it becomes clear that the separated layers cannot be distinguished from one another.  The constructed nature is present, in the landscape as well as the built environment.   Default- is it possible to separate the built from the built?   Interplay and opposition, relation and conflict or neither one, alternative both at once. The project touches upon themes such as collaboration, representation and (thinking about it…) what will the third become?   Themes –> The site-specific, the idea of the natural and the idea of the constructed. History and fiction.

Abstract:
Aortic valve diseases such as congenital bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) and progressive calcification in tricuspid valves affect the hemodynamics in the aortic arch. In addition to leaflet calcification, BAVs are associated with other ailments such as aortic coarctation, aneurysm and dissection [1]. It has also been observed that progressive calcification is accelerated in the case of BAVs compared to normal tricuspid valves. While it is not yet known whether the geometric distortion in BAVs is the main cause of calcification [2] in these valves, the distortion in the leaflets may give rise to altered stresses during the deformation processes which might play a role in accelerating the calcification process in BAVs. In addition, the altered flow caused by the change in geometry could alter the local fluid stresses during the opening phase, which might affect the endothelial lining of the aortic wall. Analyzing and comparing BAV and tricuspid aortic valves as a fluid-structure interaction problem will help determine the stress distribution on the leaflets during opening phase, and enable the examination of altered flow dynamics in the ascending aorta. In this study, the opening phase of a patient-specific bicuspid aortic valve is analyzed at physiological conditions and compared with the opening phase of a tricuspid aortic valve.

Abstract:
In about 1–2% of all live births, the human aortic valve only consists of two anomalous leaflets and is known as the bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). BAVs are the most common congenital cardiac anomaly, and are associated with significant valvular dysfunction, including calcific aortic stenosis (AS) and aortic regurgitation (AR), as well as aortic wall abnormalities including coarctation of the aorta, ascending aortic dilatation and aneurysms [1]. Many studies have proposed a common underlying genetic defect in progression of complications with BAVs [2]. However, other recent studies have also suggested that the altered hemodynamic environment associated with BAVs could also be responsible for accelerated disease progression in these patients [3, 4]. A recent in vitro study showed elevated levels of turbulence associated with BAVs, and indicated that fluid flow patterns in the aortic sinuses are also affected due to the altered valve morphology [5]. The present work seeks to compare the levels of turbulence in BAVs to pure trileaflet aortic stenosis models.

Abstract:
Congenital Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV) is a valvular anomaly where a patient is born with a valve with two leaflets instead of a normal tri-leaflet valve. It has also been reported that BAVs are prone to progressive calcification and also other complications such as ascending aortic dilatation, dissection and rupture [1]. The geometrical variations with the BAV may be a factor in altering the deformation and stresses on the leaflets resulting in calcification of the leaflets earlier than with normal tri-leaflet aortic valves. Altered flow patterns past BAV into the ascending aorta can also be anticipated. Analysis of flow dynamics during the opening phase, and the resultant fluid forces on the aortic root could improve our understanding of aortic aneurysms and dissections observed in patients with BAV [2]. In this study, the valvular deformation and the flow across a patient-specific BAV and root are simulated using the method of fluid structural interaction analysis. The patient-specific geometry is obtained employing 3D ultrasound images segmented as point cloud data and surfaces are constructed with commercial software GAMBIT using NURBS based connectivity. The opening phase of the valve is simulated under flow with physiological Reynolds number and with realistic material properties for the leaflets and the aortic root. Such an analysis on the dynamics of BAV with patient-specific geometry may be a useful tool in stratifying BAV patients that may be at risk in developing valvular and ascending aortic pathology.
