Abstract:
Biobased carbon materials (BBC) obtained from Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.) bark was produced by single-step chemical activation with ZnCl2 or KOH, and pyrolysis at 800 °C for one hour. The chemical activation reagent had a significant impact on the properties of the BBCs. KOH-biobased carbon material (KOH-BBC) had a higher specific surface area (SBET), equal to 1067 m2 g−1, larger pore volume (0.558 cm3 g−1), more mesopores, and a more hydrophilic surface than ZnCl2-BBC. However, the carbon yield for KOH-BBC was 63% lower than for ZnCl2-BBC. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to evaluate the ability of the two BBCs to remove two dyes, reactive orange 16 (RO-16) and reactive blue 4 (RB-4), and treat synthetic effluents. The general order model was most suitable for modeling the adsorption kinetics of both dyes and BBCs. The equilibrium parameters at 22 °C were calculated using the Liu model. Upon adsorption of RO-16, Qmax was 90.1 mg g−1 for ZnCl2-BBC and 354.8 mg g−1 for KOH-BBC. With RB-4, Qmax was 332.9 mg g−1 for ZnCl2-BBC and 582.5 mg g−1 for KOH-BBC. Based on characterization and experimental data, it was suggested that electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds between BBCs and RO-16 and RB-4 dyes played the most crucial role in the adsorption process. The biobased carbon materials showed high efficiency for removing RO-16 and RB-4, comparable to the best examples from the literature. Additionally, both the KOH- and ZnCl2-BBC showed a high ability to purify two synthetic effluents, but the KOH-BBC was superior.

Abstract:
Working for the BBC arts programmes Monitor and Omnibus during the 1960s, Ken Russell was responsible for a series of biographical films based on the lives of painters and composers. Tracing the development of Russell's work from Prokofiev (1961) and Elgar (1962) through to Bela Bartok (1964) and The Debussy Film (1965), the article examines how Russell's incorporation of elements of drama into the arts documentary generated arguments, both within the BBC and beyond, about the legitimacy of mixing ‘fact’ and ‘fiction’ in such works. These debates focused, in particular, on the use of ‘dramatic reconstruction’ and subjective ‘interpretation’ and the ‘fairness’ of the films’ treatment of the artists and composers with which they dealt. As a result of its unusually explicit representations of sex and violence, Russell's film about the composer Richard Strauss, Dance of the Seven Veils (1970), took these arguments to a new level. Through an examination of the responses that the film generated, the article concludes that, due to the degree to which the programme departed from BBC norms of documentary practice and the related values of ‘impartiality’ and ‘good taste’, it became a work that tested the very limits of what the BBC then considered it possible to transmit.

Abstract:
The relationship between documentary films made for projection and television documentaries has not been studied in any sustained way. This is partially a product of the weakness of the literature on both postwar documentary and of the development of the form within the new medium. This article uses a combination of biography and formal analysis to begin to address this lacuna in the literature as it relates in particular to films and programmes with scientific themes. It examines four individuals who worked in documentary film before spending varying amounts of time in television: Duncan Ross, Paul Rotha, Michael Orrom and Ramsay Short, who joined the BBC respectively in 1947, 1953, 1954 and 1963. The analysis shows that those who stayed long term at the BBC (Ross and Short) adapted their technique to the new medium, while Rotha and Orrom – who both left after a comparatively short time – mainly sought to use TV as a medium for broadcasting existing documentary styles. It concludes that the approach of taking biographical details and formal qualities is useful, but that larger samples of programme-makers would be required to reach firm conclusions about the relationship between documentary films made for projection and television documentaries

Abstract:
In 1964–6 John McGrath produced two series of filmed dramas for BBC2, the first under the series title Six, while the second series, provisionally titled ‘Five More’, was transmitted without a series title. At a time when most drama was being produced from the television studio, some of it still being transmitted live, this was a new departure, with the first six films pre-dating Up the Junction (1965) and the second series predating Cathy Come Home (1966), the two Wednesday Plays which have been celebrated for making the breakthrough to filmed drama at the BBC. Unlike the Loach/Garnett films, which were made by the Drama Department, McGrath's series were commissioned by Huw Wheldon's Documentary and Music Programmes department, which also produced Peter Watkins’ Culloden (1964), and were described as a hybrid of ‘documentary fiction’. In fact, they were an eclectic mix of different forms and styles, from Ken Russell's silent cinema pastiche, The Diary of a Nobody (1964) to Philip Saville's experimental The Logic Game (1965) and John Irvin's lyrical Strangers (1966). This article seeks to reconsider these films as examples of forgotten television drama from the mid-1960s and to examine the claim that they represent a new form of ‘documentary fiction’.

Abstract:
The War Game (BBC TV, 1965), directed by Peter Watkins, is one of the most famous films from the 1960s. Banned from TV for twenty years, it gained a limited cinema release which saw it go on to win an Oscar in 1967. Suspicions have long circulated that the BBC's decision to ban the film from TV arose as a result of pressure from government amid fears of the effect that Watkins' documentary dramatisation of a nuclear attack on the UK might have on mass TV audiences. On the fiftieth anniversary of the censorship of the film, this article takes a fresh look at the controversy, examining previously classified Cabinet Office papers and tracing in greater detail than ever before how ministers and civil servants working for Harold Wilson's 1964–70 Labour government reacted to and dealt with the issue. From this evidence, the article argues that the TV censorship of The War Game involved a complex interaction between civil servants in Whitehall, government ministers, including Prime Minister Harold Wilson himself, the Director-General of the BBC and the Chairman of the BBC Board of Governors. The article traces the close relationship between Whitehall and the upper echelons of the BBC during this Cold War period, and argues that The War Game offers a very interesting historical case study which raises disturbing questions both about the limits of the BBC's professed liberalism of the 1960s and about the true extent of its much-vaunted independence from government. The latter is particularly important in the light of more recent and current threats to that independence.

Abstract:
The importance of documentary filmmaking as a living medium and its historic contribution to recording and preserving Scotland's culture and international viewpoint cannot be overstated. But before the digital age, where was all this film material stored and what has survived? The current debate on film restoration and public access is ongoing and is illustrated through this article with my personal introduction to veteran BBC film producer James (Jim) Wilson whose enterprising career has documented so much of the twentieth century. Reflecting on this unique creative achievement, the historical context and value of his films, and those of others to society, deserve closer scrutiny. Questions need to be raised regarding government policy on film preservation and how Lottery funding can further support film restoration. Clarification is required, in this case, of possible relaxation to certain BBC licensing agreements to stimulate cooperation. Discussions are in progress which highlight the growing demand for more democratisation and further public access to these celluloid assets which can be quickly forgotten or destroyed. It is therefore encouraging that new partnerships are being forged to identify and restore the vast film collections. Building on the very significant activities of Scottish Screen Archive/National Library of Scotland. They deliver services on several levels including online film archive research/restoration facilities and exhibitions. But there is still a great deal of work to be done in this field. The Wilson film legacy is one such area and a meeting with BBC has been arranged to discuss the future potential of celebrating this special film collection.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the arguments for the creation of a BBC feature film arm - BBC Films - and its development over a period of 25 years between 1988 and 2013. This followed the launch of Channel Four in 1982 and the formation of its own influential film strand Film on Four. As the role of public service broadcasters in supporting a national cinema became increasingly important, BBC Films became a key component of government film policy. Covering a period which saw increasing convergence between film and television, this historical investigation seeks to provide a greater understanding of the role of BBC Films as an alternative source of production funding, enabling a more complete picture of public support for British film to be drawn. The conflicted place of BBC Films within the corporation forms a primary focus. Including archival research, interviews and original primary sources - in the form of previously unseen internal strategy documents - this thesis contributes to existing gaps in literature. Examination of institutional influences upon the unit’s evolving strategy and its creative decisions - including individual creativity within organisational structures - brings together elements of previously distinct disciplinary fields, providing an important contribution to film and television studies. As a division of a PSB, funded by the licence fee, this study of BBC Films also adds significantly to discourses around the desirability of broadcaster involvement in British film production, and to the issue of commerce versus culture. Finally, this thesis will seek to assess BBC Films’ unique contribution to British film culture. This will be questioned by considering the output of BBC Films from the perspectives of its support for established and emerging UK talent, its depictions of Britishness, and its success in creating a complementary brand to Channel Four.

Abstract:
This thesis is a retrospective analysis of British social realism. It combines conventional academic research with professional screenwriting practice in the genre. By definition, at its advent Social Realism employed documentary realist devices to explore the inequalities of society with the objective of stimulating socio-political debate about this imbalance and thus social reform. However, contemporary forms of social realism have emerged much more depoliticised, drawing on similar subject matter but using decontextualised narrative strategies. The commitment to truth now seems to consist of an aesthetic, as opposed to a sociological imperative.

McQueen, David. "BBC TV's Panorama, conflict coverage and the 'Westminster consensus'." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2010. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/16428/.

Full text
Abstract:
The BBC's 'flagship' current affairs series Panorama, occupies a central place in Britain's television history and yet, surprisingly, it is relatively neglected in academic studies of the medium. Much that has been written focuses on Panorama's coverage of armed conflicts (notably Suez, Northern Ireland and the Falklands) and deals, primarily, with programmes which met with Government disapproval and censure. However, little has been written on Panorama's less controversial, more routine war reporting, or on the programme's more recent history, its evolving journalistic practices and place within the current affairs form. This thesis explores these areas and examines the framing of war narratives within Panorama's coverage of the Gulf conflicts of 1991 and 2003.' One accusation in studies looking beyond Panorama's more contentious episodes is that the series has, traditionally, (over)represented 'establishment' or elite perspectives in its reporting. This charge has been made by media scholars (Williams 1968; Hall et al. 1981; Born, 2004), champions ofrival current affairs programmes (see Goddard et al. 2007) and even by a number ofsenior figures within the BBC and Panorama itself (Day 1990; Dyke 2004a). This thesis tests that view in relation to an archive ofPanorama programmes made between 1987 and 2004, with particular reference to its coverage of the First and Second Gulf Wars. The study aims to establish if Panorama has, in fact, patrolled the 'limits ofdebate', largely confined itself to 'elite views' and predominantly reflected the 'Westminster consensus' in its coverage of conflict. The thesis is supported by interviews with current and former Panorama staff and contains discussion of working practices at Panorama, particularly as they relate to reporting conflicts involving British armed forces. There is an assessment of the BBC's journalistic culture and developments within the News and Current Affairs directorate in the period under discussion; the legal and institutional constraints under which the series operated; challenges and threats to the current affairs tradition; wider concerns relating to television's coverage ofwar in general, and the two wars against Iraq specifically. Questions of indexing and framing are foregrounded in textual and content analysis of forty-two episodes dealing with the Gulf Wars to assess whether Panorama's coverage was overdetermined by official sources and elite perspectives or if it gave adequate space to a diversity of opinions and explanations for the conflicts and thereby fulfilled its legal obligations and Public Service role.

Smith, Kieron. "John Ormond and the BBC Wales Film Unit : poetry, documentary, nation." Thesis, Swansea University, 2014. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa42379.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a detailed examination of the films of Swansea-born poet and BBC Wales documentary filmmaker John Ormond. It examines the uses of the documentary form within the context of a broadcasting institution that many have argued has been one of the central agents in the political and cultural development of this small nation. Given that the thesis is concerned with the work a decidedly creative figure, it seeks throughout to keep in focus Ormond's unique contribution to the documentary form. It begins with an interpretation of Ormond's broad cultural and philosophical framework as embodied in his poetry, and from here goes on to explore the ways in which this thinking impacted upon his approach to film as a medium and, particularly, the documentary as a cultural form. It positions Ormond's approach to documentary within the tradition of the Griersonian 'British Documentary Movement', in particular its post-war manifestations on British television as pioneered by producers such as Denis Mitchell, Norman Swallow and Philip Donnellan. Indeed, the thesis is, in part, an attempt to align Ormond's work with these better-known figures in British television history. The major aim of the thesis, however, is to explore the uses of this peculiarly civic cultural form within a minority national broadcasting context. To this end, it utilizes Jurgen Habermas's notion of the 'public sphere' as a lens through which to examine the ways in which Ormond's wide-ranging oeuvre interacted with and impacted upon a Welsh public sphere at a time of unprecedented political, economic, social, and cultural change. It distinguishes three broad areas of thematic concern - "culture", "historiography" and the "ethnographic" - and examines the ways in which Ormond's films reflect and contribute to a wide and shifting range of national discourses in this pivotal era in the history of Wales.

Davies, Gail. "Networks of nature : stories of natural history film-making from the BBC." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1998. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/5188/.

Full text
Abstract:
In May 1953 the first natural history television programme was broadcast from Bristol by naturalist Peter Scott and radio producer Desmond Hawkins. By 1997 the BBC's Natural History Unit has established a global reputation for wildlife films, providing a keystone of the BBC's public service broadcasting charter, playing an important strategic role in television scheduling and occupying a prominent position in a competitive world film market. The BBC's blue-chip natural history programmes regularly bring images of wildlife from all over the globe to British audiences of over 10 million. This thesis traces the changing aesthetics, ethics and economics of natural history film-making at the BBC over this period. It uses archive material, interviews and participant observation to look at how shifting relationships between broadcasting values, scientific and film-making practices are negotiated by individuals within the Unit. Engaging with vocabularies from geography, media studies and science studies, the research contextualises these popular representations of nature within a history of post-war British attitudes to nature and explores the importance of technology, animals and conceptions of the public sphere as additional actors influencing the relationships between nature and culture. This history charts the construction of the actor networks of the Natural History Unit by film-makers and broadcasters as they seek to incorporate and exclude certain practices, technologies and discourses of nature. These networks provide the resources, values and constraints which members of the Unit negotiate to seek representation within the Unit, and present challenges as the Unit seeks to preserve its institutional identity as these networks shift. The thesis tells a series of stories of natural history film-making that reflect one institution's contributions and responses to the contemporary formations of nature, science, the media and modernity.

However, there is little information available about the preparation and dielectric properties of BaBi2Ta2O9 (BBT) and BaBi2Nb2O9 (BBN) thin films, as well as, about the structure of BBT. Therefore, firstly BBT powders were prepared by Pechini method and the phase formation was verified by XRD. The powder calcined at 800 oC / 2 hours and sintered at 850 oC / 4h showed 100% of BBT phase. The structure of BBT was determined by the Rietveld method. Aiming to control the microstructure, it was done some modification during the process of preparation of BBT and BBN thin films. The use of Bi excess as well as the use of W6+ as dopant was favorable to control the microstructure and to obtain better dielectric properties.
Abstract: In recent years the layered-structure perovskites, also known as Aurivillius compounds have attracted considerable attention for use in ferroelectric random access memories (FeRAM). BBT shows tetragonal structure (I4/mmm), and Ba and Bi share both the 2b and 4e sites. The (Ba0,70Bi0,30)(Bi1,64Ba0,36)Ta2O9 can be used to describe its unit formula. Secondly, thin films of BBT and BBN were prepared by Pechini method. They were deposited by spin coating over Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates followed by annealing under oxygen flux at different temperature. The thin films were analyzed by XRD, SEM, AFM, TEM and electric properties. The thin films showed heterogeneous microstructure and worst dielectric properties. Aiming to control the microstructure, it was done some modification during the process of preparation of BBT and BBN thin films. The use of Bi excess as well as the use of W6+ as dopant was favorable to control the microstructure and to obtain better dielectric properties. The best values to dielectric constant and dissipation factor were obtained for BBT thin films with addition of 5 wt% Bi excess heat annealed at 750 oC for 1 hour and BBN thin films with addition of 2 wt% Bi excess heat annealed at 700 oC for 1 hour The typical measured small signal dielectric constant and dissipation factor at 100 kHz were 210 and 0,025 for BBT and 356 and 0,023 for BBN, respectively...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)
Doutor

Abstract:
Alternating 10 nm thermoelectric films of N-type Si/SiGe and P-type Si/SiGe and B4C/B9C have been fabricated on various substrates, electrically joined and thermoelectric properties measured from 40°K up to 700°K. These nanoscale thermoelectric films demonstrate excellent thermoelectric power factors significantly higher than current bulk thermoelectric materials. The implications of the measured thermoelectric Seebeck coefficient data and electrical resistivity data for alternating 10 nm films that are grown to thicknesses of one to 10 microns means efficiencies of 15% at 200°C temperature differences and efficiencies of 30% at 400°C temperature differences. Utilizing Seebeck and resistivity data obtained by Hi-Z and UCSD, along with published bulk thermal conductivity data, which is conservative, unique thermoelectric module and generator concept designs for both power generation and cooling are presented over wide temperature and power ranges.

Abstract:
Fabrication development of high efficiency quantum well (QW) thermoelectric continues with the P-type B4C/B9C and N-type Si/SiGe films. Si/SiC is being developed to replace Si/SiGe for higher temperature operation. Both isothermal and gradient life testing are underway. One couple has achieved 700 hours at TH of 300°C and TC of 50°C with no degradation. Emphasis is now shifting towards couple and module design and fabrication. Preliminary design calculations regarding the development of actual quantum well modules will be presented for both power prediction and cooling applications. These modules can be used in future energy conversion system as well as air conditioning system designs.

Abstract:
This paper describes low-cost materials and processes for embedded thin film resistors that can be integrated into printed wiring board using sequential build-up processes. Realization of embedded resistors on conventional board level high loss epoxy (∼0.015 at 1 GHz) and proposed low loss BCB dielectric (∼0.0008 at > 40 GHz) has been explored in this study. Foil transfer and electroless plating have been attempted for embedding thin film resistors. Ni-P alloys were plated using conventional electroless plating, and NiCr and NiCrAlSi foils were used for the foil transfer process. A test vehicle consisting of various geometry and values of resistors was designed and fabricated to evaluate electrical and mechanical reliability of embedded thin film resistors. For the first time, Benzocyclobutene (BCB) has been proposed as a board level dielectric for advanced System-on-Package (SOP) module primarily due to its attractive low-loss (for RF application) and thin film (for high density wiring) properties. To realize embedded resistors on multi-layer BCB, a low-cost large format electroless process for deposition of NiP and NiWP thin film resistors using both low- (25°C) and high-temperature (90°C) baths has been developed. The electroless process exhibits uniform resistor thickness in the sub-micron range and offers low profile and excellent adhesion to BCB dielectric. These films also act as a seed layer for the subsequent direct electroplating of copper traces. NiP alloys can also be tailored to variable temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) with different alloy compositions. The electroless process can be adopted in the PCB manufacturing industries with no additional investment.

Abstract:
The current paper investigates the correlation between oil film formation, cavitation and starvation during inlet reversal of an Internal Combustion (IC) engine piston-ring conjunction. Piston ring lubrication is critical in the vicinity of Top Dead Center (TDC) and Bottom Dead Center (BDC) where low entrainment velocity leads to very thin films. The current study predicts that cavities formed at the trailing edge of the contact before the entrainment reversal briefly survive at the leading edge after the reversal. This contributes to contact starvation and thinner films than previously thought.
