Abstract:
This thesis examines the arguments for the creation of a BBC feature film arm - BBC Films - and its development over a period of 25 years between 1988 and 2013. This followed the launch of Channel Four in 1982 and the formation of its own influential film strand Film on Four. As the role of public service broadcasters in supporting a national cinema became increasingly important, BBC Films became a key component of government film policy. Covering a period which saw increasing convergence between film and television, this historical investigation seeks to provide a greater understanding of the role of BBC Films as an alternative source of production funding, enabling a more complete picture of public support for British film to be drawn. The conflicted place of BBC Films within the corporation forms a primary focus. Including archival research, interviews and original primary sources - in the form of previously unseen internal strategy documents - this thesis contributes to existing gaps in literature. Examination of institutional influences upon the unit’s evolving strategy and its creative decisions - including individual creativity within organisational structures - brings together elements of previously distinct disciplinary fields, providing an important contribution to film and television studies. As a division of a PSB, funded by the licence fee, this study of BBC Films also adds significantly to discourses around the desirability of broadcaster involvement in British film production, and to the issue of commerce versus culture. Finally, this thesis will seek to assess BBC Films’ unique contribution to British film culture. This will be questioned by considering the output of BBC Films from the perspectives of its support for established and emerging UK talent, its depictions of Britishness, and its success in creating a complementary brand to Channel Four.

Nwonka, Clive James. "Has the fire burnt out? : New Labour and the end of British social realism." Thesis, Brunel University, 2014. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/9058.

Abstract:
This thesis is a retrospective analysis of British social realism. It combines conventional academic research with professional screenwriting practice in the genre. By definition, at its advent Social Realism employed documentary realist devices to explore the inequalities of society with the objective of stimulating socio-political debate about this imbalance and thus social reform. However, contemporary forms of social realism have emerged much more depoliticised, drawing on similar subject matter but using decontextualised narrative strategies. The commitment to truth now seems to consist of an aesthetic, as opposed to a sociological imperative.

McQueen, David. "BBC TV's Panorama, conflict coverage and the 'Westminster consensus'." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2010. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/16428/.

Full text
Abstract:
The BBC's 'flagship' current affairs series Panorama, occupies a central place in Britain's television history and yet, surprisingly, it is relatively neglected in academic studies of the medium. Much that has been written focuses on Panorama's coverage of armed conflicts (notably Suez, Northern Ireland and the Falklands) and deals, primarily, with programmes which met with Government disapproval and censure. However, little has been written on Panorama's less controversial, more routine war reporting, or on the programme's more recent history, its evolving journalistic practices and place within the current affairs form. This thesis explores these areas and examines the framing of war narratives within Panorama's coverage of the Gulf conflicts of 1991 and 2003.' One accusation in studies looking beyond Panorama's more contentious episodes is that the series has, traditionally, (over)represented 'establishment' or elite perspectives in its reporting. This charge has been made by media scholars (Williams 1968; Hall et al. 1981; Born, 2004), champions ofrival current affairs programmes (see Goddard et al. 2007) and even by a number ofsenior figures within the BBC and Panorama itself (Day 1990; Dyke 2004a). This thesis tests that view in relation to an archive ofPanorama programmes made between 1987 and 2004, with particular reference to its coverage of the First and Second Gulf Wars. The study aims to establish if Panorama has, in fact, patrolled the 'limits ofdebate', largely confined itself to 'elite views' and predominantly reflected the 'Westminster consensus' in its coverage of conflict. The thesis is supported by interviews with current and former Panorama staff and contains discussion of working practices at Panorama, particularly as they relate to reporting conflicts involving British armed forces. There is an assessment of the BBC's journalistic culture and developments within the News and Current Affairs directorate in the period under discussion; the legal and institutional constraints under which the series operated; challenges and threats to the current affairs tradition; wider concerns relating to television's coverage ofwar in general, and the two wars against Iraq specifically. Questions of indexing and framing are foregrounded in textual and content analysis of forty-two episodes dealing with the Gulf Wars to assess whether Panorama's coverage was overdetermined by official sources and elite perspectives or if it gave adequate space to a diversity of opinions and explanations for the conflicts and thereby fulfilled its legal obligations and Public Service role.

Smith, Kieron. "John Ormond and the BBC Wales Film Unit : poetry, documentary, nation." Thesis, Swansea University, 2014. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa42379.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a detailed examination of the films of Swansea-born poet and BBC Wales documentary filmmaker John Ormond. It examines the uses of the documentary form within the context of a broadcasting institution that many have argued has been one of the central agents in the political and cultural development of this small nation. Given that the thesis is concerned with the work a decidedly creative figure, it seeks throughout to keep in focus Ormond's unique contribution to the documentary form. It begins with an interpretation of Ormond's broad cultural and philosophical framework as embodied in his poetry, and from here goes on to explore the ways in which this thinking impacted upon his approach to film as a medium and, particularly, the documentary as a cultural form. It positions Ormond's approach to documentary within the tradition of the Griersonian 'British Documentary Movement', in particular its post-war manifestations on British television as pioneered by producers such as Denis Mitchell, Norman Swallow and Philip Donnellan. Indeed, the thesis is, in part, an attempt to align Ormond's work with these better-known figures in British television history. The major aim of the thesis, however, is to explore the uses of this peculiarly civic cultural form within a minority national broadcasting context. To this end, it utilizes Jurgen Habermas's notion of the 'public sphere' as a lens through which to examine the ways in which Ormond's wide-ranging oeuvre interacted with and impacted upon a Welsh public sphere at a time of unprecedented political, economic, social, and cultural change. It distinguishes three broad areas of thematic concern - "culture", "historiography" and the "ethnographic" - and examines the ways in which Ormond's films reflect and contribute to a wide and shifting range of national discourses in this pivotal era in the history of Wales.

Davies, Gail. "Networks of nature : stories of natural history film-making from the BBC." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1998. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/5188/.

Full text
Abstract:
In May 1953 the first natural history television programme was broadcast from Bristol by naturalist Peter Scott and radio producer Desmond Hawkins. By 1997 the BBC's Natural History Unit has established a global reputation for wildlife films, providing a keystone of the BBC's public service broadcasting charter, playing an important strategic role in television scheduling and occupying a prominent position in a competitive world film market. The BBC's blue-chip natural history programmes regularly bring images of wildlife from all over the globe to British audiences of over 10 million. This thesis traces the changing aesthetics, ethics and economics of natural history film-making at the BBC over this period. It uses archive material, interviews and participant observation to look at how shifting relationships between broadcasting values, scientific and film-making practices are negotiated by individuals within the Unit. Engaging with vocabularies from geography, media studies and science studies, the research contextualises these popular representations of nature within a history of post-war British attitudes to nature and explores the importance of technology, animals and conceptions of the public sphere as additional actors influencing the relationships between nature and culture. This history charts the construction of the actor networks of the Natural History Unit by film-makers and broadcasters as they seek to incorporate and exclude certain practices, technologies and discourses of nature. These networks provide the resources, values and constraints which members of the Unit negotiate to seek representation within the Unit, and present challenges as the Unit seeks to preserve its institutional identity as these networks shift. The thesis tells a series of stories of natural history film-making that reflect one institution's contributions and responses to the contemporary formations of nature, science, the media and modernity.

Abstract:
This study examines the representation of Local Education Authority (LEA) secondary schooling in England and Wales as it was portrayed in non-fiction British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) programmes in the twenty-one years that followed the 1944 Education Act. The primary sources drawn on for this study include the surviving microfilmed radio scripts, dating from 1944–1965 and held at the BBC Written Archives (BBC WAC). The correspondence files from contributors to programmes also provide a key source from BBC WAC. The majority of the programmes considered are radio broadcast, however some documentary films on the topic of secondary education, made by the BBC and transmitted on television, are also analysed. Where audio-visual copies have survived, the programmes were viewed at the BFI Viewing Services. The study draws on 235 BBC programmes in total, made in the years 1944–1965. The details of these broadcasts can be seen in the three Appendices accompanying this study. The study also employs the use of drawing to present key ideas. This study explores how broadcasts are formed as cultural products. The research questions address: what was the content of these programmes? Who collaborated to create and edit these programmes and how were the programmes devised to inform the public about the provision of secondary education? What was the role of the All Souls Group (ASG) in this collaboration? The public included a domestic audience in England and Wales and an overseas audience for whom distinct broadcasts were usually created. A further element of the research is a scrutiny of the BBC as an organization that positions itself as neutral. The considered programmes enabled a group of eloquent educationalists to use their rehearsed and edited ‘conversation’ on a public stage. As the study unfolds it becomes apparent that the members of the informal education discussion group, the ASG, were lobbying to encourage the topic of secondary education to resurface sufficiently often on air. The study concludes with recognition that the reinforcing of loyalties between overlapping networks, such as the BBC and the ASG, should no longer be approached with reticence in academic research.

Mugrauer, Alex, and Johannes Pers. "Marketing managers in the age of AI : A multiple-case study of B2C firms." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Företagsekonomi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-161285.

Abstract:
The growing capacity of artificial intelligence (AI) has been compared to how electricity transformed our world and industries a hundred years ago. AI is changing the rules, roles and tools of marketing, as marketing is one of the most prosperous areas to implement AI in. Accordingly, the role of marketing manager is expected to transform to a large extent. This calls for further research, since the area appears underexplored in relation to its weight of importance. Thus, the main purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the literature in marketing and management by exploring the ongoing transformation of the role of marketing managers. In order to fulfill this purpose, the following research question was formulated: How is the role of marketing managers in B2C-firms affected by increased levels of AI-capacity? In order to answer this question, a qualitative multiple-case study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with three marketing managers with experience of AI-usage in their field, as well as three experts at the intersection of AI and marketing. This triangulation was conducted to attain a nuanced and complementary view of the investigated area. The findings of this study suggest that increased levels of AI-capacity affect the role of marketing managers in B2C-firms both externally and internally. First, the increased usage of AI-technologies allows for better financial accountability of marketing managers, thus marketing managers can avert a greater influence in top management. Increased AI-capacity further implicates marketing in the way that marketing becomes more relevant, as well as opening new possibilities to build stronger relationships with customers. Further implicating the role of marketing managers are the evolving AI-assistants, in which the findings of this study suggest that they will increasingly become a crucial distribution channel and consequently, brands will increase in importance. This stands in contrast to previous research, which suggests as the AI-assistant solely base their decision on facts; focus should be shifted towards optimizing value propositions towards the AI-assistants, instead of the consumer. The findings of this study suggest that optimization towards the AI-assistants will indeed be crucial. But as more firms do so, the competitive advantage will be reduced to a hygiene factor, since all actors optimize in the same way, as was the case when search engine optimization grew and saturated. Thus, brand building will once again become a highly important decision-criterion among consumers. Further, as customer data collection is a major component in the usage of AI-technologies in marketing, the findings of this study suggest marketing managers will increasingly work with establishing transparent policies that benefit the customers. Moreover, increased usage of AItechnologies further demands marketing managers to be sufficiently knowledgeable in technology. As the responding experts believe AI-technologies are unlikely to replicate human EQ, intuition and creativity for a foreseeable future, marketing managers will still be vital to firms. This because the responding marketing managers reported these capabilities to be highly crucial in their role.

Abstract:
The work described herein deals with the synthesis and characterization of lead chalcogenide thin films and nanocrystals. The first part of thesis describes the properties of semiconductors followed by an analysis on the chemical vapour deposition and nanoparticulate formation. In the next part of thesis, single-source precursors of type thioselenophosphinato, selenoureato, dithiocarbamato and dithiocarbanato complexes of lead have been synthesised and characterised. As-synthesised compounds have been utilised for the fabrication of lead sulfide and lead selenide thin films by aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition as well as nanocrystals by colloidal injection method. Lead sulfide thin films were also deposited by liquid-liquid interface from lead dithiocarbanato at room temperature. The as grown thin films of lead sulfide and lead selenide have been characterised by XRD, SEM and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) analysis. In the second part of the thesis, preparation of lead sulfide and lead selenide nanocrystals in olive oil at low growth temperatures (50-60°C) is described and have shown that by controlling experimental conditions, well-defined particles with tunable emission in mid and far-infrared region can be synthesised. Furthermore, compositionally-tuned PbSxSe1-x nanocrystals has also been prepared by adding controlled amount of sulur and selenium ingredients into lead oxide. Homogenous distribution of sulfur and selenium within alloyed nanocrystals is confirmed by transmission electron microscope studies. Moreover, attempts have been made to prepare quaternary (PbTe/Se/S) nanocrystals of lead chalcogenides and depth (1.9-5.8 nm) profile analysis by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the formation of core/shell/shell type structure i.e. PbTe/S/Se.

Abstract:
Among the family of NLO borate compounds, barium metaborate (BBO) is particularly attractive because it has a variety of favourable properties such as a wide optical transmis- sion range, rather large nonlinear optical coefficients and a high damage thre- shold. The main objective of the present work was the growth and characterization of BBO thin films by injection metal organic chemical vapour deposition (injection-MOCVD). This method is based on the computer-controlled injection of micro amounts of a solution into an evaporator system. There, the solution containing precursors dissolved in an appropriate solvent is flash vaporised. Thin films were deposited with a molar composition from boron rich (Ba :B=1 :56) to stoichiometric (Ba :B=1 :2) and different growth temperatures and characte- rised by several methods (optical microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, XPS, FTIR). The best BBO layers were obtained for Ba :B=1 :2 molar ratio and for a growth temperature of around 700 ◦C. The successful growth of BBO was confirmed by micro-Raman and XPS analysis

Abstract:
This thesis examines how Latin America is produced and consumed through the ¡Viva! Spanish and Latin American Film Festival in Manchester and how people who do not have Latin American origins (subsequently 'non-Latin American') use Latin American culture to reconcile issues of self-identity and cosmopolitanism at a local level. Extending Dina Iordanova's (2010) application of imagined communities to film festivals beyond diaspora, a framework of imagined cosmopolitan communities finds that, through consumption of the ¡Viva! film festival, non-Latin American consumers can often feel a sense of belonging or connection to Latin American people and culture. Non-Latin American ¡Viva! consumers subsequently incorporate Latin American culture and identity within their own construction of self-identity in order to reaffirm their sense of self. Using a mixed methods approach which brings together qualitative research (including a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews) with media analysis, this thesis finds that the incorporation of Latin American identity into non-Latin American self-identity is facilitated, in part, by the way in which Latin America has been encoded at a discursive level in the UK in recent decades through magical realism and associated codes, themes and narratives concerning the region's bizarre, crazy, strange and surreal characteristics. Applying theories of encoding and decoding (Hall, 1980), the ¡Viva! film festival and its non-Latin American audience members are found to likewise construct Latin America in these terms, as different, but not too different from British cultural norms. This interpretive framework, along with the fact that Latin Americans are largely positioned outside of the increasingly hostile rhetoric towards migrants and ethnic minorities in the UK, facilitates the incorporation of a Latin American identity within non-Latin American consumers' construction of self-identity. Scholars have suggested that cosmopolitanism demands a transformation in self-understanding in addition to an openness towards the cultural Other (Delanty, 2009). Analysis of the ¡Viva! film festival subsequently reveals a nuanced form of cosmopolitanism in which the Self is transformed through the incorporation of the Latin American cultural Other and offers an insight into the changing nature of the cultural relationship between Latin America and the UK. Latin America has typically been constructed as embodying the unconscious fears and desires of British (and western) culture (Beasley-Murray, 2003; Foster, 2009). This thesis finds instead that Latin America is being reconfigured by non-Latin American consumers of the ¡Viva! film festival as an equally formative part of their conscious identity that completes their sense of self and of being cosmopolitan in an attempt to resist and challenge contemporary scepticism and rhetoric in the UK surrounding multiculturalism, immigration and ethnic minorities.

Abstract:
Gulliver's Travels, by Jonathan Swift, has captured readers' imaginations for almost three hundred years, spawning countless adaptations over several different mediums. As different means of communicating and transforming art have been invented, these adaptations have grown to fill the new mediums and make use of the various possibilities each form has created. Film in particular has created an enormous opportunity to re-imagine Gulliver's Travels, since it can directly show the audience the fictional foreign locations in which Gulliver finds himself. In this study, I examine seven screen adaptations of Swift's novel to determine what our current culture views as the core of the work, or what we see as the important pieces to pass on to current and future audiences. The seven chosen adaptations were selected based on how well they have survived over the last century; adaptations which are no longer available for commercial purchase and/or viewing were excluded from the study. I have also only included works which maintain a resemblance to the original story in structure, even if merely loosely, and have excluded works which bear only a thematic tie; I based my choices on the works which make an overt claim to be interpretations of the original text. This study examines only the works which seek to directly represent the original novel. By looking at Swift's work through the lens of adaptation, this study will show how Swift's work is currently perceived, and examines what that may mean for the future of Swift's legacy. As cultural views and connotations of language have changed, the directors of the adaptations have used different means to achieve sometimes similar, sometimes different messages. Gulliver's Travels was originally a satiric work that addressed social problems of eighteenth-century England. Popular views on society have changed, however, as have the politicians holding office. Certain events in Gulliver's Travels, such as the reading of Gulliver's offences in Lilliput, no longer have nearly the same relevance. Therefore, it is important to examine how the directors address these changes to determine what will retain relevance over time.

Abstract:
Ken Russell (1927-2011) was a renegade talent and the self-styled enfant terrible of British cinema. His legacy as a film-maker consists of a large number of films on the lives of artists, mainly composers. But Russell’s approach to artist biography was highly unorthodox: rather than reconstruct a factual account he offered a deeply personal interpretation of artists’ lives based on his own understanding of their work. In a programmatic text for his film on Mahler (1974), Russell explained that his films ‘evolve through a stream of consciousness in which the man and the myth, the music and its meaning, time, place, dream and fact all flow and blend into the mainstream of the film itself’ and that ‘my film is simply about some of the things I feel when I think of Mahler’s life and listen to his music’.This book is an attempt to explain what that statement means and to unpack its implications for the practice of life writing. It takes a baroque approach to performance and performativity to show how Russell not simply made highly inventive films on other artists, but also constructed those films as a kind of self-portrait. Russell’s work then becomes a performance of self through art. In four chapters of detailed analysis this book reconstructs Russell’s method, from the very first films he made for the BBC in the early 1960s through his major feature films of the 1970s and 1980s.<br>Doctorat en Histoire, histoire de l'art et archéologie<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Kumar, Vikas. "An empirical investigation of the linkage between dependability, quality and customer satisfaction in information intensive service firms." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3011.

Full text
Abstract:
The information service sector e.g. utilities, telecommunications and banking has grown rapidly in recent years and is a significant contributor to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the world’s leading economies. Though, the information service sector has grown significantly, there have been relatively few attempts by researchers to explore this sector. The lack of research in this sector has motivated my PhD research that aims to explore the pre-established relationships between dependability, quality and customer satisfaction (RQ1) within the context of information service sector. Literature looking at the interrelationship between the dependability and quality (RQ2a), and their further impact on customer satisfaction (RQ2b) is also limited. With the understanding that Business to Business (B2B) and Business to Customer (B2C) businesses are different, exploring these relationships in these two different types of information firms will further add to existing literature. This thesis also attempts to investigate the relative significance of dependability and quality in both B2B and B2C information service firms (RQ3a and RQ3b). To address these issues, this PhD research follows a theory testing approach and uses multiple case studies to address the research questions. In total five cases from different B2B and B2C information service firms are being investigated. To explore the causality, the time series data set of over 24 to 60 months time and the ‘Path Analysis’ method has been used. For the generalization of the findings, Cumulative Meta Analysis method has been applied. The findings of this thesis indicate that dependability significantly affects customer satisfaction and an interrelationship exists between dependability and quality that further impacts customer satisfaction. The findings from B2C cases challenges the traditional priority afforded to relational aspect of quality by showing that dependability is the key driver of customer satisfaction. However, B2B cases findings shows that both dependability and quality are key drivers of customer satisfaction. Therefore, the findings of this thesis add considerably to literature in B2B and B2C information services context.

Abstract:
Static fatigue tests with measure of strain were performed on these materials. The experimental results (lifetime, strain, tensile behavior) have helped to understand and model the mechanisms responsible for the delayed failure at the different scales: - Hi-Nicalon tows rupture is caused by subcritical crack growth mechanism activated by oxidation of free carbon in the fibres. This phenomenon is disrupted by fast oxide SiO2 formation over 900°C: subcritical crack growth kinetic slows down for low stresses because of protective oxide formation which prevents the cracks from oxygen; For high stresses, the lifetime of Hi-Nicalon tows is weaker because of fibers interactions (fiber-oxide-fiber). At last, creep seems to cause the rupture of the tows for stresses over 200 MPa at 1200°C. - Hi-Nicalon/type PyC/SiC minicomposites break by subcritical crack growth slowed down by the SiC matrix and by the SiO2 formation which limit the access of the oxygen to the fibers. Creep occurs at 1200°C but it isn’t responsible of the rupture. - Hi-Nicalon/type PyC/B4C minicomposites break by subcritical crack growth slowed down by the formation of B2O3 oxide at 900°C for high stresses. The rupture is caused by the fast decrease of the diameter of the fibers at the other temperatures and for low stresses at 900°C. The oxidation kinetic of the fibers increases because of the dissolution of silica coating by B2O3 oxide. Analytical modeling was performed to schedule the lifetime of these materials and the variability of the experimental results is studied

Abstract:
To nám umožní dát pozorované anizotropní vlastnosti do souvislosti přímo s elektronickou strukturou systému (pásovou strukturou a hustotou stavů).

Abstract:
Radio-frequency microelectromechanical systems (RF~MEMS) are highly miniaturized devices intended to switch, modulate, filter or tune electrical signals from DC to microwave frequencies. The micromachining techniques used to fabricate these components are based on the standard clean-room manufacturing processes for high-volume integrated semiconductor circuits. RF~MEMS switches are characterized by their high isolation, low insertion loss, large bandwidth and by their unparalleled signal linearity. They are relatively simple to control, are very small and have almost zero power consumption. Despite these benefits, RF~MEMS switches are not yet seen in commercial products because of reliability issues, limits in signal power handling and questions in packaging and integration. Also, the actuation voltages are typically too high for electronics applications and require additional drive circuitry. This thesis presents a novel MEMS switch concept based on an S-shaped film actuator, which consists of a thin and flexible membrane rolling between a top and a bottom electrode. The special design makes it possible to have high RF isolation due to the large contact distance in the off-state, while maintaining low operation voltages due to the zipper-like movement of the electrostatic dual-actuator. The switch comprises two separately fabricated parts which allows simple integration even with RF circuits incompatible with certain MEMS fabrication processes. The two parts are assembled by chip or wafer bonding which results in an encapsulated, ready-to-dice package. The thesis discusses the concept of the switch and reports on the successful fabrication and evaluation of prototype devices. Furthermore, this thesis presents research results in wafer-level packaging of (RF) MEMS devices by full-wafer bonding with an adhesive intermediate layer, which is structured before bonding to create defined cavities for housing MEMS devices. This technique has the advantage of simple, robust and low temperature fabrication, and is highly tolerant to surface non-uniformities and particles in the bonding interface. It allows cavities with a height of up to many tens of micrometers to be created directly in the bonding interface. In contrast to conventional wafer-level packaging methods with individual chip-capping, the encapsulation is done using a single wafer-bonding step. The thesis investigates the process parameters for patterned adhesive wafer bonding with benzocyclobutene, describes the fabrication of glass lid packages based on this technique, and introduces a method to create through-wafer electrical interconnections in glass substrates by a two-step etch technique, involving powder-blasting and chemical etching. Also, it discusses a technique of improving the hermetic properties of adhesive bonded structures by additional passivation layers. Finally, it presents a method to substantially improve the bond strength of patterned adhesive bonding by using the solid/liquid phase combination of a patterned polymer layer with a contact-printed thin adhesive film.<br>QC 20100617

Abstract:
Partial Nitritation/Anammox process (deammonification process), by which occurs oxidation of ammonium to nitrogen gas by autotrophic bacteria in anaerobic conditions, considered to be cost-effective and environmentally friendly method of nitrogen removal. Present research work focuses on achieving a high nitrogen removal degree, thanks to Anammox bacteria, while providing the best performance of the ongoing process. Integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) reactor was supplied with the main stream of the wastewater after UASB reactor, characterized by low concentration of nitrogen and organic matter. The bacteria ability to accommodate, were tested in the biofilm and in the activated sludge, depending on the different stages in which the process were being conducted. Batch test, such as Specific Anammox Activity (SAA), Nitrate Uptake Rate (NUR) and Oxygen Uptake Rate (OUR), were used for the evaluation of activity of various groups of bacteria. On the basis of laboratory analysis verified the values obtained from the batch tests. It was determined that a high degree of nitrogen removal (92% of NH4-N) was achieved thanks to the dominant activity of the Anammox bacteria, with low participation of other groups of bacteria. It was also proved, that Anammox bacteria activity were overwhelming in the biofilm. Dominant role of Ammonium Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB) was associated with high activity of Anammox bacteria, which together satisfyingly out-competed Nitrite Oxidizing Bacteria (NOB) and heterotrophic bacteria. It has been shown that Anammox bacteria quickly adapt to the new conditions and they are able to assume a dominant role, even in the case of inoculation of the reactor with the sludge from SBR. This allows conclude, that in the case of operational problems, the reactor can be supplied from another source, in order not to inhibit the process.

Abstract:
The present work covers the fabrication and optical investigation of semiconductor microcavities for Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) of exciton-polaritons. These microcavities consist of highly reflective distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) surrounding a ZnO-cavity as active medium. In the first step, the growth of DBRs was optimised with respect to exact thickness control and high reproducibility. For the active material, several growth strategies have been pursued, in order to optimise the conditions for the growth of planar thin films by pulsed laser deposition. Techniques like annealing or ion beam smoothing were successfuly applied in order to either improve the electronic properties or decrease the roughness of the ZnO-cavity layer. Furthermmore, a successful technology was developed in order to coat highly-crstalline free-standing ZnO nanowires with concentrical DBR shells. All samples have been investigated regarding their roughness and crystallinity as well as their optical properties. For the latter spatially and/or angular-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy and reflection measurements have been carried out. Thereby, the strong coupling regime – being prerequisite for BEC – could be demonstrated in almost all of the synthesized structures. For the nanowire-based microcavities hints for an enhanced coupling strength have been found. In one of the planar samples, showing the high quality factor of 1000, the formation of BEC almost up to room temperature was observed and was studied as a function of temperature and detuning. Negative detuning was found to be mandatory for the formation of a BEC in ZnO-based microcavities. The distinct momentum- respective in-plane wavevector distribution of the condensate polaritons revealed a strong dynamic character of these particles at low temperatures

Fanning, Sarah Elizabeth. "Changing fictions of masculinity : adaptations of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, 1939-2009." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/8524.

Abstract:
The discursive and critical positions of the ‘classic’ nineteenth-century novel, particularly the woman’s novel, in the field of adaptation studies have been dominated by long-standing concerns about textual fidelity and the generic processes of the text-screen transfer. The sociocultural patterns of adaptation criticism have also been largely ensconced in representations of literary women on screen. Taking a decisive twist from tradition, this thesis traces the evolution of representations of masculinity in the malleable characters of Rochester and Heathcliff in film and television adaptations of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights between 1939 and 2009. Concepts of masculinity have been a neglected area of enquiry in studies of the ‘classic’ novel on screen. Adaptations of the Brontës’ novels, as well as the adapted novels of other ‘classic’ women authors such as Jane Austen, George Eliot and Elizabeth Gaskell, increasingly foreground male character in traditionally female-oriented narratives or narratives whose primary protagonist is female. This thesis brings together industrial histories, textual frames and sociocultural influences that form the wider contexts of the adaptations to demonstrate how male characterisation and different representations of masculinity are reformulated and foregrounded through three different adaptive histories of the narratives of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Through the contours of the film and television industries, the application of text and context analysis, and wider sociocultural considerations of each period an understanding of how Rochester and Heathcliff have been transmuted and centralised within the adaptive history of the Brontë novel.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中興大學<br>材料科學與工程學系所<br>101<br>We investigated the third compound added in FePt layer in order to achieve good grain segregation and grain size uniform granular films. Can be divide into two parts. In the first part, Multilayers [FePt (2.5 nm)/B4C (t nm)]4 (t=0-1) and [FePt (2.5 nm)/(B4C)0.7Ag0.3 (0.25 nm)]4 were alternately deposited on a glass substrate and subsequently annealed by a rapid thermal process (RTP) at 800oC for 3 min. After RTP, the granular FePt(B4C) and FePt(B4C-Ag) films with perpendicular magnetization were formed. The immiscible (B4C, Ag) elements were used as segregant to isolate FePt grains and maintain c-axis alignment. The B4C is an extremely covalent hard ceramic material with high melting point and used to separate FePt grains and avoid the formation of soft FeB during annealing. The minor doped Ag with high mobility was used to promote the ordering. The FePt grains were separated uniformly and the average grains size was 14.7 nm in (Fe0.48Pt0.52)90 [(B4C)0.7Ag0.3)]10 film. Another series, Multilayers [FePt/B4C (t nm)]10 (t = 0-0.4) and [FePt/(B4C)yAg1-y (0.1nm)]10 (y = 0.2-0.8) films were deposited on a glass substrate and subsequently annealed by a rapid thermal process (RTP) at 800oC for 3 min. After RTP, the granular FePt(B4C) and FePt(B4C-Ag) films with perpendicular magnetization were formed. The FePt grains were interconnected in FePt(B4C) films and further broken into the small round grains in FePt(B4C-Ag) films. In FePt(B4C) films, the maze-like structure with worm shape FePt grains but the grains boundaries were still defined. The granular structure with well defined boundaries was formed when the minor Ag was added to partial replace B4C. The average grains size of FePt was 10. 6 nm in (FePt)90 [(B4C)0.2Ag0.8)]10 film. In second part, multilayers of [FePt(1 nm)/B(0.1 nm)]10 and [FePt (1nm) / (B0.7Ag0.3)(0.1nm)]10 were alternately deposited on a glass substrate and subsequently annealed using a rapid thermal process (RTP) at 800oC for 3 min. Plasma oxidation process was performed on sputtered B or (B, Ag) layer. Thereafter, granular FePt(B, Ag) films with perpendicular magnetization were formed. The immiscible (B, Ag) elements were used as a segregant to isolate FePt grains and maintain c-axis alignment. After plasma oxidation and posting annealing, the iron-oxide and boron-oxide were indexed in granular FePt(B, Ag) films. When the oxygen flow ratio within 1%, the FePt(B, Ag) film show maze like structure and the FePt grains was increased slightly from 8.1 nm to 10.1 nm after plasma oxidation. The oxygen may create vacancies that improve the atomic diffusion during ordering and enhance the grain growth. When the oxygen flow ratio is above 3%, the FePt grains size was furthered reduced to around 4~5 nm due to the boron oxide but the perpendicular magnetization and coercivity of Fe(B, Ag) film was deteriorated due to lots of soft magnetic iron-oxide.

Abstract:
博士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>物理研究所<br>103<br>Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and giant saturation magnetization are both critical physical properties in fundamental science and contemporary industries. Therefore they attract much attention in magnetic investigation. Iron(Fe) and its nitride are the candidates for the materials of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and giant saturation magnetization. We devote to investigate these topics: (1)The magnetic properties and crystalline structure of bcc-Fe on NiAl(001) (2) The exchange coupling between Fe/bct-Mn systems (3) The electronic structure, magnetic properties and AFM-induced coercivity enhancement of FeN thin films. Ultrathin Fe films were deposited on NiAl(001) for the studies of the magnetic properties and crystalline structures. Spin reorientation transition (SRT) was observed at approximately 4 monolayers (MLs) at room temperature. At less than this critical thickness, the Fe _lms&apos;&apos;s easy axis is perpendicular to the surface plane with a ultra small coercive field (Hc ~ 1 Oe) which is much smaller than other related Fe systems. Such soft perpendicular magnetization may cause to the special surface reconstruction and termination of NiAl(001). During the transition region, the Fe films sustained body-centered-cubic (bcc) structure without any obvious phase transformation and variation. Thus, through a phenomenological model, the competition between the surface anisotropy and shape anistropy determine the SRT behavior. The surface anisotropy is 267.3 μeV/atom, which smaller than the cases of bct-Fe on Ag(001) and free standing bcc-Fe. The weaker surface anisotropy might be attributed the reconstructed NiAl(001) surface. Expanded bcc-Mn films ( c/a = 1.15) were deposited on NiAl(001) for the studies in the magnetic property. In the Fe/Mn bilayer system, the coercive field enhancement is observed when the Mn thickness is greater than 9 ML. Through AFM/FM exchange theory, the coercive field enhancement without exchange bias implies the coherent rotation between Mn and Fe layers during the magnetization process. Iron nitride, which exhibits a higher saturation magnetization than a bcc-Fe thin film, was grown on Au(001) texture on a GaAs(001) substrate for studies of crystalline structure, electronic structure and magnetic properties. Fe 2p3/2 and Fe 2p1/2 X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) reveal the electronic hybridization between the Fe atoms and the adjacent N atoms. Through the multipeak analysis, except main peak of Fe(4d), the remaining two peaks in the Fe 2p spectrum correspond to Fe(8h) and Fe(4e) geometrical sites and that they simultaneously show an energy shift toward higher energy which suggests the charge-transfer-induced electronic rearrangement of electronic configuration in Fe(8h) and Fe(4e) geometrical sites. These observations in electronic structure and hybridization between the N atoms and the adjacent Fe atoms could help to explain the saturation magnetization enhancement in the FeN system. On the other hand, the Cr thin film also was deposited on the FeN sample. AFM-induced coercive field enhancement is observed as the Cr thickness increases. These results provide a guide for the coercivity manipulation in the future.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣科技大學<br>工業管理系<br>101<br>E-commerce has become a prominent subject in the global economy. Internet online shopping is one of the applications that has received a lot of attention and market growth. 2000 to 2004 was the startup period of online shopping in Taiwan. Due to the immature system of logistic and cash flow integration for online transaction, Sunday ran it business by stocking inventory and direct buyout in its early stage of business operation. Sunday made a remarkable performance through its strategic product selection and inventory monitoring system. As the logistic and cash flow integration matured in 2004, the market had a booming growth. At the same time of increasing in sales orders, the issues of inventory and operating cost management were also taking place. Sunday launched its new marketing strategy by implementing the “Four Verticals” in 2005 with the intention to pass the cost of delivery and shipment processing tasks to the suppliers. It has been a great success working with solid and reputable suppliers. The monthly revenue reached 500 millions NT Dollars during this period of time. This case study includes the discussion of consumer buying criteria when it comes to choosing an e-commerce platform and in depth discussion of value chain. Through the introduction of product buyout, Four kinds of supplier delivery, physical inventory, and 3rd party logistic strategy, the concept of supply chain management and related knowledge in business administration will be studied and analyzed. When business is experiencing growth, how to monitor and establish strategic workflow organization, and make functional organization capable of handling changes and resistance. When it comes to externality, how to coordinate and maintain business integrity to meet the demands. At last, what are the critical factors when implementing logistic strategy for a business and its value chain positioning in the industry. What is left for the readers to think about is the future of e-commerce and physical storefront retailers. How can strength of each business model be applied to create a blueprint for Internet company. In this case study, the management theories are based on e-commerce value chain, supply chain, logistic strategic planning, and organization management.

Emmens, Heather. "Domestications and Disruptions: Lesbian Identities in Television Adaptations of Contemporary British Novels." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/5352.

Full text
Abstract:
The first decade of this century marked a moment of hypervisibility for lesbians and bisexual women on British television. During this time, however, lesbian hypervisibility was coded repeatedly as hyperfemininity. When the BBC and ITV adapted Sarah Waters’s novels for television, how, I ask, did the screen versions balance the demands of pop visual culture with the novels’ complex, unconventional – and in some cases subversive – representations of lesbianism? I pursue this question with an interdisciplinary methodology drawn from queer and feminist theories, cultural and media studies, and film adaptation theory. Chapter Two looks back to Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (BBC 1990). I examine this text – the first BBC television serial to feature a lesbian protagonist – to establish a vocabulary for discussing the page-to-screen adaptation of queer identities throughout this dissertation. Chapter Three investigates Waters’s first novel Tipping the Velvet (1998) and its complex intertextual relationship with Andrew Davies’s serialized version (BBC 2002). I also examine responses to the serial in the British press, tracing the ways in which dominant cultural forces seek to domesticate non-normative instances of gender and sexuality. Chapter Four examines Waters’s novel Fingersmith (2002) in relation to Peter Ransley’s adaptation (BBC 2005) to situate adaptations of Waters’s retro-Victorian texts amid the genre of television and film adaptations of Jane Austen novels. I argue that Ransley’s serial interrogates the notion of Austen as a “conservative icon” (Cartmell 24) and queers the Austen adaptation genre itself. To conclude this study I address Davies’s television film (ITV 2008) of Waters’s second novel Affinity (1999). In this chapter I examine how the adaptation depicts the disruptive lesbian at the centre of the text. I argue in particular that by casting an actress who does not conform to dominant televisual norms of femininity, the adaptation is able to create a powerful audiovisual transgendered moment which adds to the novel’s destabilization of Victorian hierarchies of gender and class. This chapter considers, finally, how Tipping the Velvet, Fingersmith and Affinity have contributed to lesbian visibility on British television.<br>Thesis (Ph.D, English) -- Queen's University, 2009-05-27 11:26:42.504

Abstract:
碩士<br>世新大學<br>傳播研究所(含博士班)<br>93<br>Among the increasing development of media, broadcasting still plays an essential role in the media arena. A large group of the public habitually turn on the radio to listen to broadcast news while the occurrence of catastrophe or while driving. However, the limited number of academic and/or practical literature on the production of feature programs with depth not only keeps students studying broadcasting or journalism from crossing the doorstep, but also makes no rules for reporters to follow in practice. In recent years, the media in Taiwan keep hunting for news with sensualism. Reports on underprivileged groups are nowhere to be seen. Such a phenomenon, of course, receives wide criticism. Reports of this kind are also rarely seen in broadcast field. Due to the above-mentioned fact, the writer of this Report, with over ten years’ experience as radio reporter, produced a series of feature programs, entitled “The Waning Moon Glows on the Land, The Loving Warmth Fills in the Heart”, on mentally and physically challenged people. Through in-depth interviews and carefully written scripts and production, the writer intended to make her contribution to the underprivileged groups. This Report is created because the writer produced a series of feature programs, “The Waning Moon Glows on the Land, The Loving Warmth Fills in the Heart” during the process of study on the job. The series received the 2003 Award of Bright Society Report presented by Taipei City Journalist Association. As a national award, it possesses its representativeness in the broadcast field. The writer of this Report hereby documents her interview experience and production procedure to make a good example of broadcast feature programs as well as an academic and practical reference for the research and production of broadcast features.
