Abstract:
The advent of low cost touch screens for computers such as the BBC microcomputer has made it possible for educationalists and therapists to experiment with a unique method of computer interaction which was not previously open to them. This article describes the results of the authors' early attempts to use touch screens. The work it describes is being carried out as part of a wide-ranging study into the applications of microcomputers in the field of occupational therapy at the Dundee University Microcomputer Centre.

Abstract:
Sounds Useful is the title of a suite of music programs for the BBC microcomputer, designed for primary school use. The programs aim to allow the computer to be used as an instrumental resource in conjunction with other musical instruments. This article describes the programs, their purpose and how they came to be developed. It also looks at aspects of the development of music software in general and challenges in particular the view that the quality of sound produced by standard microcomputers is insufficient for creative use in primary schools.

Full text
Abstract:
A digital waveform synthesizer driven by a BBC microcomputer has been used to generate both the forward and time-reversed signal inputs required for twin Bragg cell space-integrating correlators. The cross-correlation functions of the two signals have also been computed digitally, and the optical and digital correlation are compared. The digital and optical correlation functions are found to be in generally good agreement. Best results are obtained using a nonheterodyning correlator in which the inputs to the Bragg cells are double-sideband large carrier modulations of the signal on an rf carrier. A significant difference is observed between this case and the suppressed carrier case, in which the correlation function is compressed in time by a factor of 2.

Abstract:
We report a rectangular pulse Nd:YAG laser pumped Ti:Sapphire laser and optical parametric tunable laser, worked in high stability and high transform efficiency. The highest pulse energy is 125mj, the highest repetition rates is 30Hz. A microcomputer and single-chip computer is used for wavelength tuning, the tunable range of 532nm pumped Ti:Sapphire laser is from 680nm to 860nm; the tunable range of 355nm pumped BBO crystal optical parametric tunable laser is from 440nm to 2600nm. Three high power rectangular laser pulses of 1064nm, 532nm and 355nm are offered by the multifunction wide band tunable laser respectively.
