Abstract:
The news broadcasted on the BBC Great Debate places issues related to the referendum into two categories: our party (United Kingdom) and their party (European Union). According to Edelman’s news frame theory, BBC, through the BBC Great Debate program, creates specific perspectives by using particular words that influence the way audiences understand reality. This study explores the impact of the BBC ideology on frames of the EU referendum broadcasted on the BBC Great Debate and the changes in the Brits’ political attitudes. This research’s paradigm is constructivism with a qualitative approach, and the analytical method used is Edelman’s news frame analysis model. Based on the findings, despite numerous criticisms expressed by leading UK academics regarding BBC’s alignments with Leave campaigners in the first three months of the campaign, BBC continued to frame biased stories. The news packages broadcasted by the BBC were potentially designed to influence the Brits’ political decision, turning their vote from remain to leave the EU. However, a specific survey on the voters should be conducted to profoundly examine whether the BBC Great Debate had significantly changed their political decisions.

This paper, entitled “Study of orientation and news coverage about Daesh crisis by websites of IRNA, BBC Persian and Voice of America”, comparatively explores structure and how to cover news in websites of IRNA, BBC Persian and the voice of America. The paper is conducted in descriptive-analytical method and by the way of content analysis. Data has been studied in library method. Survey and examination of existing documents as well as analysis of the content of news websites are presented in descriptive tables. The type of organization and how to cover news differ in three websites of BBC and IRNA, Voice of America. Every three websites have specifically emphasized on the element “who’’, “news value’’ and “fame’’, indicating their person-oriented and talk orientation. Finally, it was concluded that most published news are “non-productive’’ in three websites, however IRNA’s portion is more than others. Conceptually, the issue of Daesh group resistance, the employment of Jihadi groups, the effort to manifest Daesh an Islamic group, introducing Daesh governmental philosophy as an Islamic government and not mentionning to its terrorist nature has been under survey and attention of these three websites. The focus of IRNA and Voice of America is mostly on “hard news’’ but BBC concentrates on “soft news’’ or reflection of events along with complementary information. Publication of “photo’’ has been used as interactive and multi-media facilities by news websites. Unlike IRNA, websites of BBC and Voice of America have highly made use of Email and links to topics and relevant websites.

Abstract:

This paper looks at how the media – particularly the British press and television – frames the issue of Romanian immigrants in Great Britain, in the context of the freedom of movement for workers in the European Union. The study focuses on the frames employed by the British journalists in constructing anti-immigration discourses in the digital and the TV sphere, comparatively. This study analyzes the stereotypes about Romanian people used in two British media formats and the way in which they affect Romania’s country image overseas. Using a mixed research approach, combining framing analysis (Entman, 1993) with critical discourse analysis (Van Dijk, 1993), and dispositif analysis (Charaudeau, 2005) this article investigates 271 news items from three of the most read newspapers in the UK (The Guardian, Daily Mail and The Independent), published online during January 2013 – March 2014. Also, the paper analyzes three film documentaries from BBC (Panorama – The Romanians are Coming? – BBC1, The Truth About Immigration – BBC2 and The Great Big Romanian invasion – BBC World News). The analysis shows that the British press and television use both similar and different frames to coverage Romanian migrants. The media also infer the polarization between “Us” (the British media) and “Them” (the Romanian citizens).

"ANALISIS BINGKAI PEMBERITAAN AKSI BELA ISLAM 2 DESEMBER 2016 (AKSI 212) DI MEDIA MASSA BBC (INDONESIA) & REPUBLIKA." Abstract:
This article presents a framing analysis of news about Aksi Bela Islam 2 Desember 2016 (Aksi 212) which were reported by two local media: BBC Indonesia and Republika. Aksi 212 refers to a collective movement of Indonesian Muslim society which demands a lawsuit against the incumbent candidate of the 2017 DKI Jakarta governor election, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok. The street demonstration that centered in the capital Jakarta received massive coverage from local and international media, reporting with various news frames. BBC Indonesia and Republika were among the big news houses that covered the event with their own distinctive perspectives. This is the reason that the authors attempt to conduct a framing analysis of the news about the issue reported by the two news organizations. Using Entman’s (1993) framing model, the authors analyzed five news articles from the respective media. The results show that BBC Indonesia which belongs to the international news agency, BBC UK tends to frame the Aksi 212 as a demonstration which has a negative connotation. On the other hand, Republika which is known for its Muslim target audience produces a news frame about the Aksi 212 in a more positive manner. This framing analysis provides a picture on how significant of an event is to be framed in a certain way by news agencies.

Weir, Patrick. "Popular geopolitical assemblages : BBC radio and foreign news." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/20525.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore strands of assemblage, actor network theory and object oriented philosophy to the study of popular culture and world politics. Specifically it focuses on the linkages to be made between radio broadcasting, travel writing and journalism, in light of these theories. It does this through the presentation of series of archival encounters with material relating to BBC radio and foreign news production during the 1960’s Cold War period, an era in which radio broadcasting and radio technologies were absolutely central to the understanding wider geopolitical environments. The opening chapters of the thesis argue for the utility of a version of relational materialist approaches hybridised with discursive analytic frameworks as interlinked ways of thinking, which are more appropriate to understanding radio as a semiotic-discursive hybrid of popular cultural construction, as read through BBC radio and foreign news during the Cold War. The empirical chapters look to a variety of archival texts produced by radio, including infrastructural and network plans, scripted news series and individual biographical archives and turns the tools from the hybrid framework to address them. The thesis then moves towards a further provocation: to imagine radio itself differently, as a geo-political force, and suggests further possibilities for research through engagement with conceptual art, experimental literature and sound recording to conceive of some of the non-representational aspects radio’s multiple fields of relations. The thesis concludes with a call, based on what has gone before, to recognise the importance of networked and assemblage ontologies to understanding further historical and contemporary formations of geopolitical media, and suggests further research based on the strategies it identifies.

Belair-Gagnon, Valerie. "Reconstructing crisis reporting: social media and BBC news production." Thesis, City University London, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.616929.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the emergence of social media, the BBC has sought to produce reporting more connected to its audience while retaining its authority as a public broadcaster in crisis reporting. On the one hand, news production studies theorists argue that mainstream news organisations have had difficulties adapting to social media and become closer to Its audience. On the other hand, crisis ' reporting research claim that the emergence of social media has led these news organisations to adopt a more "sensitive" and "collaborative" type of reporting. Using a comprehensive empirical analysis of crisis news production at the BBC since the London bombing attacks pf 7 July, 2005, this dissertation presents an alternative argument. It shows that the emergence of social media at the BBC and the need to manage this kind of material led to a new media logic in which tech-savvy journalists take on a new centrality in the newsroom. In this changed context, the politico-economic and socio-cultural logic have led to a more connected newsroom involving this new breed of journalists and BBC audience. This examination of news production events shows that in the midst of theses transformations in journalistic practices and norms, including news-gathering, sourcing, distribution and impartiality, the BBC has reasserted its authority as a public broadcaster.

Thorsen, Einar. "News, citizenship and the Internet : BBC News Online's reporting of the 2005 UK General Election." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2009. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/13500/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers the importance to democracy of online spaces where citizens can engage in dialogue on issues of public concern. Specifically, it evaluates the BBC's news and features provision on its website dedicated to the 2005 UK Parliamentary General Election, entitled Election 2005. Particular attention is given to sections such as the Election Monitor, the UK Voters' Panel and Have your say, to which people were encouraged to submit their views and comments for posting. Given the leading status of BBC News Online in the UK (the remit for which is defined, in part, by its Royal Charter obligation to provide a public service), it is vital to examine the Election 2005 website and its role in the democratic process. The principal aim of this thesis is to analyse the ways in which BBC News Online deployed its website to facilitate spaces for citizens to engage in dialogue during the 2005 UK General Election. To achieve this aim, the thesis makes use of web dialogue analysis, which is a method proposed and defined for the purpose of this project. The case study is divided into three chapters: the first dealing with online news in which citizen voices were found to be marginalised; the second concerning different genres of online feature articles, wherein citizen voices was the most prominent source; and the third focussing on sections where people were encouraged to submit comments. Through analysing the nature of source utterances (quotations and paraphrases), and comments submitted to debate sections, the thesis found little dialogue taking place in any of the sections on the BBC's Election 2005 website. It argues this was caused by a) the deliberate intention of BBC staff to discourage dialogue, and instead facilitate a 'global conversation', b) the manual process used to publish comments to the site, and c) people being at the time unaccustomed to participate in any meaningful debate using online forums. In this way, the thesis seeks to contribute to a developing area of scholarship concerned with news media representations of national elections, online journalism and citizenship.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Bruna Lopes Fernandes Dugnani.pdf: 25551145 bytes, checksum: d7b4b2969762cdfb0d64c76ea0a9335a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-10-19
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico
The great amount of immigrants and the several attempts to legislate on immigration in the United Kingdom arouse controversies and involve several social sectors. Those sectors are given voice on the BBC News online news, which produces news not only to inform but also to unveil its own opinions and position. This aspect assures BBC‟s influential role on society. Taking this into account, our goal is to understand the ideological position underlying BBC News online news towards irregular immigration in the United Kingdom. The criteria adopted for the corpus selection were: the news about irregular immigration in the United Kingdom had to be published from 12th April to 6th May of 2010 and signed by a journalist; the material forwarded by the anchors available on the news was to be related to irregular immigration, and the other selected content had to work as non-verbal element to the news selected by the first aforementioned criterion. Those criteria were established in order to relate the selected utterances to BBC‟s editorial policies and to the electoral process for the new British parliament when irregular immigration issue acquired great importance and to assure that the said and the unsaid on the news could be properly understood. This way we collected five pieces of news published from 12th April to 6th May of 2010, which led us to four source documents, one blog post and one piece of news. Futhermore, the said and unsaid on the five selected news was materialized on three pieces of news and one BBC News transcript of the British parties‟ leader debate. In order to achieve the objective of this research, we adopted the Bakhtinian dialogic approach, sharing with Bakhtin and The circle their language conception and, more specifically, the concepts of Speech genre, Non-verbal, Other speakers‟ speech, and Ideology. The corpus specifity made us adopt the NURC/ SP oral language transcription method, some links and hypertext classifications and a conception that enabled the analysis of the corpus‟ verbal-visual dimension. For the corpus analysis, we followed the Bakhtinian methodological order of describing, analyzing, and interpreting, taking in consideration the wider and the more specific social contexts and the genre and linguistic materiality of every piece of news. The analysis result pointed to a xenophobic conservative political position and indifference towards human rights

Parkinson, Neil. "Navigating Stremes. Conceptualising, Activating, and Legitimising Strategic Change within BBC International News." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/7230.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers strategic change from the novel perspective of a manager practically ‘activating’ it within a complex organisation. It involved 18 months of action research and participant observation within BBC Global News, where joint processes were developed across two converging businesses. A journal was maintained of meetings and events, access was granted to internal documentation, and 12 interviews were conducted. One contribution of this thesis is a new conceptualisation of the developing elements of organisational strategic posture and related environmental events as ‘stremes’: strategic memes representing relevant subsystems, ideas, and subcultures. The posture is depicted as a construction of multiple voices, often combining, sometimes clashing, as ideas compete for legitimacy. This allows the practitioner outlook to be presented through three linked perspectives. A ‘process’ approach maps the unfolding streme system; a ‘people’ approach considers the building of consensus to legitimise stremes; and a ‘practice’ approach considers the efficacy of action research in helping to craft change. It is found that not only do the actions of people shape the streme network; the complex, interdependent network also partially shapes their actions. This research builds on previous work on strategic change, but provides new narrative insight from a practitioner’s outlook. It also created ‘practical knowledge’, since many outputs of the process were implemented within the BBC, and may have relevance elsewhere.

Wang, Shuman. "Investigating BBC's and FT's operations in China through comparison between their Chinese and English online news portals." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25677.

Full text
Abstract:
This study addresses the issue of overseas news production of foreign news media when they enter the market of the Mainland China. By making an in-depth investigation of BBC’s and the FT’s operations in China and comparing the news texts of the two news media’s Chinese online portals with that of their British online portals, differences in terms of narratives, semantics, plot emphasis, and ideologies are identified and analysed, thus revealing the cross-cultural behaviour patterns of the two prominent British news media in terms of balancing between British journalistic ideology and Chinese regulations, western journalistic style and Chinese readers’ tastes, and between moral standards and commercial profit. The four online portals are compared through three Chinese news events that took place in the year 2012: the downfall of Chinese high ranking official Bo Xilai; the large-scale anti-Japan protests in the summer of 2012; and Chinese writer Mo Yan winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. The three news events covered the fields of politics, economy, society and culture. The investigating methods include quantitative analysis and framing analysis of the news reports on the three news events produced by the four online portals, translation study of the translated news reports of the four online portals and semi-structured interviews with journalists and editors of BBC Chinese and the FT. The central argument is that BBC and the FT act differently in China and in the UK so as to cater to local media markets on many aspects including journalistic practice, coverage of local news, and media policy. Such changes in some cases do not remain consistent with their claims to represent the same news media. Consequently, the Chinese branches of the two prominent British news media become neither a British journalistic ideology carrier nor a copycat of a Chinese native news producer but rather a mixture of both cultures.

Abstract:
Fabrication development of high efficiency quantum well (QW) thermoelectric continues with the P-type B4C/B9C and N-type Si/SiGe films. Si/SiC is being developed to replace Si/SiGe for higher temperature operation. Both isothermal and gradient life testing are underway. One couple has achieved 700 hours at TH of 300°C and TC of 50°C with no degradation. Emphasis is now shifting towards couple and module design and fabrication. Preliminary design calculations regarding the development of actual quantum well modules will be presented for both power prediction and cooling applications. These modules can be used in future energy conversion system as well as air conditioning system designs.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper will show the development of lean premix combustion technologies in BBC, ABB and Alstom gas turbines. Different technologies have been developed and applied in Brown Boveri Company (BBC) before 1990. Considerable improvements with respect to NOx emissions as compared to gas turbines with a single combustor and a single diffusion burner for liquid and gaseous fuel have been achieved with burners with extended premixing sections and with multi injection burners for annular combustors. Between 1990 and 2005 burners with short but effective premixing zones (EV burners: environmental friendly V-shaped burners) have been implemented in all new gas turbines of the ABB (and later Alstom) fleet with NOx levels well below 25 vppmd (@15%O2). In addition to this, three variants of premix technologies have been successfully developed and deployed into Alstom GT engines: the sequential EV burners — a technology that allows premixing of natural gas and oil into a hot exhaust stream to reheat the exhaust gases of a first high pressure turbine; the MBtu EV burners that are used to burn syngas in a premix flame with low NOx emissions; and the advanced EV burners (AEV) that are capable to prevaporize and premix liquid fuel prior to combustion and burn it with very low NOx emissions without water injection. The paper will give an overview of these technologies and their usage in Alstom gas turbines over the last 25 years.

Full text
Abstract:
We aimed to effectively use unutilized rice straw by producing Bio-coke, which is a new briquette (in the rest of this document referred to as the BIC) with high density and hardness, from rice straw with various conditions based on initial water content and processing temperature and evaluated characteristics of rice straw BIC. First of all, the apparent density of BIC was calculated from its weight and volume, and the cold compressive strength for each BIC was measured. From the results, it showed that the relationship between apparent density and maximum compressive strength derived from the compression test had a positive correlation. Furthermore, the hot compressive strength of the BIC produced with 5% initial water content and 453K processing temperature was measured. The rice straw BIC had a maximum compressive strength of 4.8MPa at a high temperature of 973K. This hot maximum compressive strength is equal to about one third of the hot maximum compressive strength of coal coke, which is 12MPa. Also, it was determined that the maximum compressive strength of rice straw BIC is highest on both cold and hot compression tests, and BIC produced from agricultural biomass like rice straw and rice husk had higher maximum compressive strength at room and high temperatures than BIC produced from other materials. Thus, it seemed that fiber and silica contained in agricultural biomass helps maintain of structure of BIC.
