Abstract:

Sherlock BBC (2010) is one of the latest adaptations of Sherlock Holmes. By using the modern era as its sett ing, Sherlock off ers something different compared to previous Sherlock Holmes adaptations. This research focuses on the representation of female characters on Sherlock according to an issue that already chosen which is women and crime. The theories and concepts which are used on this research are gender construction in Victorian Era, the concept of femme-fatale and crime fi ction characteristics. I argue that there are some substantial diff erences of female characters’ representation in Sherlock compared to the original story. Despite those diff erences, female characters in Sherlock are still represented in a similar manner as the crime fictions characteristics in which women are always put in an inferior position and
the one who need men’s help.

Abstract:
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, currently enjoying renewed popularity on television via the BBC's Sherlock (2010–), have been adapted for the screen countless times around the world. Arguably the best remembered are Granada's long-running strand with Jeremy Brett (1984–94) and the Universal film series of the 1940s featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Less frequently cited, however, are the two series produced by the BBC between 1965 and 1968, in which first Douglas Wilmer and later Peter Cushing took on the mantle of the Baker Street detective. Typically for the time – but against the wishes of the Conan Doyle estate – these programmes adopted a multi-camera studio model: a mode of production which made them less attractive to US networks than the single-camera 35mm film output of commercial rivals such as ITC. Drawing upon material from the BBC's Written Archives Centre, this article investigates the motivations underpinning the Corporation's refusal to accommodate the estate's exhortations to seek American co-production and utilise single camera filming, not least of which was the BBC's stated desire to maintain the ‘essentially English’ quality of Sherlock Holmes. This decision would have significant repercussions for the series’ overseas saleability and – despite impressive viewing figures and positive audience reaction at home in the UK – helped to contribute to its ‘forgotten’ status with regard to the television canon.

Sherock Holmes’s road to „normality” As is the case with most asocial and asexuals geniuses, in most of his incarnations Sherlock Holmes has been presented as a character with qualities associated with autism in popular culture, such as high analytical intelligence, unwillingness to establish close relations with people, lack of understanding of social norms and lack of empathy. The article analyzes the character of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC TV show “Sherlock” and the narrative of cure employed in the show, which leads to him losing his autistic traits. Abstract:
The idea of Sherlock Holmes or what I am calling Holmesness has evolved with each of Holmes’s onscreen representations and with it has evolved his Victorian England. My paper argues that Holmes has become an emblem of victory of good over evil, thriving in his ecosystem comprised of other characters, incidents and Holmes’s Victorian England; and Holmes can only be successfully represented along with his ecosystem. To support this, I will analyse two recent television adaptations of Sherlock Holmes – Sherlock by BBC and Elementary by CBS and highlight how these series have successfully adapted Holmes and his ecosystem emblematically—not as narrative laments, but as archetypes. The chosen adaptations have not only appropriated Holmes in contemporary time, but also have appropriated his world as well.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:
Abstract BBC adapts the world famous Sherlock Holmes series into programmes— Sherlock. The setting of the stories is in modern London. Sherlock Holmes and his assistant no longer use the observation to handle cases. They now use modern technology to solve the cases that even Scotland Yard would have no idea. In this thesis, I will define Sherlock as a cyborg detective who has machine-like superior deduction talent, but still has a humane warm heart. I divide my thesis into four parts; the thesis begins with the definitions of cyborg, comparing Sherlock to an earlier prototype--the monster in Frankenstein, discussing the controversy and change of attitude towards technology. The thesis examines the importance of characters to Sherlock in the programmes, aiming to address the issue of crime and the significance of cyborg. It is expected that the examination will lead not only into the understanding of the usage of technology for Sherlock, but also to the understanding of his thought and growth in his heart. Through the comparison of original novels and the BBC programmes, the readers get contrapuntal perspectives to know further the content of the stories, the adaptations of the characters, and the promotion of the case-solving and crimes. Considering Sherlock as the newest and also the most special adaptation of Sherlock Holmes series, the thesis proposes a different approach to analyzing the lasting classic works of literature. By focusing on the use of cyborg technology, the thesis provides a new venue to studying the Sherlock Holmes series.

This thesis focuses on the various adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyles novel The Hound of the Baskerville and accentuate the episode The Hounds of Baskervilles from the BBC TV series Sherlock. Thus, this thesis is decribing the theme, which was not fully covered in Czech literature. The author used different sources, books, internet pages and cinematographic pieces. The thesis consists of two parts. In the first part the author is focusing on the theory of adaptation, Doyle's life and art, The Hound of the Baskervilles book and the TV series Sherlock. In the practical part the author narrates about the episode The Hounds of the Baskervilles and searching for definition of the adaptation process, which the makers of this episode used. This part also answers the question, why is this episode so popular and key for the whole series. The crucial final part of the thesis summarizes the main principles, which authors and film makers can use during the process of the adaptation. Abstract:
Following the reboot of Doctor Who and the popularity of Sherlock, the BBC has become a major exporter of quality television to the world. One sign of the success of UK television in the United States comes at the annual San Diego Comic-Con, where BBC America has made a concerted effort to build a loyal US audience. This chapter analyzes the importance of Comic-Con in the transnational circulation of British television texts within the American industry. Comic-Con provides a space for the promotion of UK television brands where American and British fans can meet, and where international media companies mingle with US conglomerates. There is a transatlantic trade relationship between the United States and United Kingdom; at Comic-Con, the BBC and its flagship series Doctor Who and Sherlock compete with networks such as CBS and HBO. Through the targeted promotion of British branding these series have become successful transnational commodities.

Abstract:
The problem of characterizing brain functions such as memory, perception, and processing of stimuli has received significant attention in neuroscience literature. These experiments rely on carefully calibrated, albeit complex inputs, to record brain response to signals. A major problem in analyzing brain response to common stimuli such as audio-visual input from videos (e.g., movies) or story narration through audio books, is that observed neuronal responses are due to combinations of ``pure'' factors, many of which may be latent. In this paper, we present a novel methodological framework for deconvolving the brain's response to mixed stimuli into its constituent responses to underlying pure factors. This framework, based on archetypal analysis, is applied to the analysis of imaging data from an adult cohort watching the BBC show, Sherlock. By focusing on visual stimulus, we show strong correlation between our observed deconvolved response and third-party textual video annotations -- demonstrating the significant power of our analyses techniques. Building on these results, we show that our techniques can be used to predict neuronal responses in new subjects (how other individuals react to Sherlock), as well as to new visual content (how individuals react to other videos with known annotations). This paper reports on the first study that relates video features with neuronal responses in a rigorous algorithmic and statistical framework based on deconvolution of observed mixed imaging signals using archetypal analysis.
