Abstract:
This study analyzes the Kashmir conflict by little empirical work on Kashmir News after the abolition of Article 370. The purpose here is to identify the nature of news coverage by the global news media. For this purpose, 193 new stories were selected which were appeared at the web sources of three global news channels BBC, CNN, Aljazeera. This study primarily focusses on Content analysis of how CNN, BBC and AL JAZEERA designed Kashmir in their online news broadcasting with time frame of from 5 August to 30 September 2019 soon after the revocation of Article 370 while determining the difference in storytelling and the search for stories of information about Kashmir. By using an original coding program that extract on the coverage of Kashmir conflict, media effects and agenda-setting theories, the analysis is found that AL JAZEERA has heavily relied on episodic coverage and focued on international condemnation frame in its coverage than CNN which heavily focused on the Human-interest frame as well as BBC relied on the responsibility frame in its coverage related Kashmir. The study investigates the sources of the stories where AL JAZEERA cited government leader and official statements; CNN added journalists’ views whereas BBC heavily relied on their correspondents’ version. However, the investigation provides the insight into the worldwide media coverage of the issue and their view

Abstract:
In 2011, the Arab world had become the centre of attention once again after the emergence of the so-called ‘Arab Spring’ in December 2010. This historical event in the modern history of the Arab region has brought significant social and political reform to the Arab world. The wave of Arab uprising begins in Tunisia at the end of 2010, rapidly separated into other neighbouring countries such as Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Bahrain, and Sudan. Since the early stage of protest, which mainly participated by locals, mass media has comprehensively reported this historical event, which brought down many Arab leaders in power for decades. Thus, Arab Spring has become the headline of many international media outlets, and the media are still discussing the significant impact of the event until now. Hence, the main objective of the study is to examine the event's Arabic online news discourse by focusing on the keywords and prominent social actors in the news reports surrounding the Arab Spring. This will indicate what has been included and excluded or highlighted and marginalised in the news coverage. The data is consist of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) online news published by four prominent news outlets namely with different origin and background: Al-Arabia of Saudi Arabia, Al-Jazeera of Qatar, BBC Arabic of the UK and CNN of the USA. These well-established news outlets were selected for their comprehensive international coverage aims at various Arabic readers worldwide. The study employs corpus linguistics analytical tools by using corpus data mining software ‘AntConc 3.4’. Then, the quantitative results of corpus data will be analysed using a qualitative approach based on the textual-oriented Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Fairclough (1992) and Wodak (2001). The result shows that news coverage of the event has highlighted several keywords that indicate the main social actors and main social events of the Arab Spring. These keywords are the shared command features among the news outlets, although each outlet portraying them is significantly different. Finally, the article presents suggestions for other related studies in the future.

Full text
Abstract:
Jurisdiction is the foundational concept for both national laws and international law as it provides the link between the sovereign government and its territory, and ultimately its people. The internet challenges this concept at its root: data travels across the internet without respecting political borders or territory. This book is about this Jurisdictional Challenge created by internet technologies. The Jurisdictional Challenge arises as civil disputes, criminal cases, and regulatory action span different countries, rising questions as to the international competence of courts, law enforcement, and regulators. From a technological standpoint, geography is largely irrelevant for online data flows and this raises the question of who governs “YouTubistan.” Services, communication, and interaction occur online between persons who may be located in different countries. Data is stored and processed online in data centres remote from the actual user, with cloud computing provided as a utility. Illegal acts such as hacking, identity theft and fraud, cyberespionage, propagation of terrorist propaganda, hate speech, defamation, revenge porn, and illegal marketplaces (such as Silkroad) may all be remotely targeted at a country, or simply create effects in many countries. Software applications (“apps”) developed by a software developer in one country are seamlessly downloaded by users on their mobile devices worldwide, without regard to applicable consumer protection, data protection, intellectual property, or media law. Therefore, the internet has created multi-facetted and complex challenges for the concept of jurisdiction and conflicts of law. Traditionally, jurisdiction in private law and jurisdiction in public law have belonged to different areas of law, namely private international law and (public) international law. The unique feature of this book is that it explores the notion of jurisdiction in different branches of “the” law. It analyses legislation and jurisprudence to extract how the concept of jurisdiction is applied in internet cases, taking a comparative law approach, focusing on EU, English, German, and US law. This synthesis and comparison of approaches across the board has produced new insights on how we should tackle the Jurisdictional Challenge. The first three chapters explain the Jurisdictional Challenge created by the internet and place this in the context of technology, sovereignty, territory, and media regulation. The following four chapters focus on public law aspects, namely criminal law and data protection jurisdiction. The next five chapters are about private law disputes, including cross-border B2C e-commerce, online privacy and defamation disputes, and internet intellectual property disputes. The final chapter harnesses the insights from the different areas of law examined.

AbstractThe British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a long-standing institution with a worldwide reputation as the maker and supplier of trustworthy news embedded in programmes aimed at serving the public not commoditising it. This chapter describes the BBC’s institutional DNA and explains how its birth characteristics informed its institutional trajectory over the decades. The chapter discusses the internal principles and the particular ‘craft’ that has made this a true British institution that has become equally revered outside Britain’s borders. It analyses how the BBC survived institutional crises to reach a moment in history where the very idea underlying this venerable but agile institution has come under fire.

This chapter explores the corporate state of transatlantic television via a case study of BBC America, which is co-owned by the British BBC Worldwide and the American AMC Networks. The chapter details BBC America’s shift from an independent cable channel oriented around Britishness to an asset in AMC Networks’ portfolio, with a programming strategy more AMC than BBC. The study thereby illustrates that the value of a cable channel is no longer just in its individual brand; now its worth lies in the larger corporate network of program ownership and access to transnational platforms. BBC America’s prime-time scripted drama strategy is driven accordingly by the overarching goal to reach upscale, engaged viewers on both linear TV and video-on-demand platforms, in line with the global aspirations of its corporate parent.

Abstract:
At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1950s, some of the brightest students seldom attended classes. Instead they loitered around the Tech Model Railroad Club. The most brilliant were tapped to join the Signals and Power Committee, which rigged ever more elaborate systems of programmable track switches using nothing more sophisticated than telephone relays. Taking pride in their ad hoc wiring, which ignored all conventions of electrical engineering, they referred to themselves as hackers. Nothing was impossible for them; nothing was off limits. When MIT acquired its first computer in 1956, they infiltrated the control room, where they coerced the electronics to do tricks unintended by the manufacturer, using sine and cosine routines to code the first digital computer game. As computers became more common, so did hacking. To program home computers in the 1970s no longer required the imaginative genius of the MIT Signals and Power Committee, and by the 1980s self-professed hackers ranged from professional software developers to adolescent cyberpunks. The latter proved considerably more interesting to the public, riveted by their ability to torment corporations and governments from their bedrooms. “A hacker—computer jargon for an electronic eavesdropper who by-passes computer security systems—yesterday penetrated a confidential British Telecom message system being demonstrated live on BBC-TV,” reported the Daily Telegraph in a typical news story of 1983, the year that War Games hit the big screen. Old-school Signals and Power hackers fought valiantly against this linguistic turn, insisting that the young punks were crackers rather than hackers, but the media ignored the distinction, leading most new-school professionals to head off confusion by blandly presenting themselves as computer scientists or software engineers or information technology specialists. Aside from the occasional insider reference—ITs who troubleshoot security systems were sometimes known as “white-hat” hackers— the criminal connotation seemed permanent. Then in 2004 a Silicon Valley technology writer named Danny O’Brien gave a forty-five-minute lecture at the O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference titled “Life Hacks: Tech Secrets of Overprolific Alpha Geeks.” Within a year technophiles worldwide, from computer scientists to iPhone addicts, were striving to become hackers again.

This article describes how social media in the business world today has been one of the major trends that highly affects business transactions worldwide. Existing literature focused on how businesses can leverage social media to better interact with their customers, and how to use of social media by companies to drive innovation. However, not mush had been done to examine how B2C high-tech start-ups utilise innovation through social media to improve business performance. As such, this article attempts to fill a research gap that examines the extent of social media usage by B2C high-tech start-ups in London to drive innovation and hence improve their performance and business outcomes. Due to the complexity of innovation as a concept, qualitative research was chosen as an appropriate method to understand the view of high-tech start-ups on the matter using semi-structured interviews.

Breast Cancer (BC) is the leading cause of death in women, worldwide. The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) Performance Status (PS) of BC can be studied using HRV measures. The main purpose of this chapter is to give an insight to clinicians via HRV measures with respect to age to make them understand the PS of patients. Data from 114 BC patients was segregated into two age groups, G1 (20 to 40 years) and G2 (41 to 75 years). The 5-minute electrocardiogram of the subjects was taken and HRV measures were extracted. One-way ANOVA with Posthoc Tukeys' HSD test was done. Triangular Index, Ratio of standard deviation of poincare plot perpendicular to the line of identity to the standard deviation along line of identity, Detrended Fluctuation Analysis descriptors, Approximate Entropy, Sample Entropy and Correlation Dimension significantly decreased from ECOG0 to 4 and from G1 to G2. The sympathetic activity increased with vagal withdrawal as age advanced.

Abstract:
The Neolithic period worldwide can readily be identified as one of the great transformations in human history—in Europe, there were no farmers at c.7000 cal BC, but very few hunter-gatherers after c.4000 cal BC—with long-term consequences still felt today. However, it remains difficult to capture both the detail of everyday lives during the Neolithic, and the flow of long-term transformations. This introduction asks how we are to combine all our expanding data, and at what scales we should interpret them. The challenges facing integrated and multi-scalar approaches are illustrated by a recent project on Linearbandkeramik (LBK) lifeways in central Europe, which united isotopic, osteological and archaeological analyses in an investigation of cultural diversity. The other chapters that follow are introduced. The chapter ends by looking to how we better integrate archaeological science, through a shared focus on debating what questions we should ask.

Abstract:
Developing and sustaining a competitive advantage from the use of information technology is a topic of concern for information systems research. Mata et al. (1995) present a model that is founded on the resource-based view of the firm. The model is used to discuss factors that lead to competitive advantage in e-commerce companies. This paper explores factors that enable sustainable competitive advantages in B2C retailing. The analysis is based on a single in-depth case study of an Internet pioneer company (LeShop), which was observed by the authors since its inception more than 10 years ago. The research data stems from a series of interviews with managers at LeShop as well as two case studies about the company from two different points in time (2000 and 2009). LeShop is an online pioneer, which began selling groceries on the Internet in Switzerland in April 1998. After a turbulent few years, LeShop is now one of the few successful e-commerce suppliers in the supermarket segment worldwide. The discussion includes an analysis of further critical resources of the company from a resource-based view.

Abstract:
Concerns have been raised to navigational safety worldwide because of the increasing throughput and the passing ships during the past decades while maritime accidents such as collisions, groundings, overturns, oil-spills and fires have occurred, causing serious consequences. Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) has been acknowledged to be a framework widely used in maritime risk assessment. Under this framework, this paper discusses certain existing challenges when an effective safety assessment is carried out under a variety of uncertainties. Some theories and methodologies are proposed to overcome the present challenges, e.g., Fault/Event Tree Analysis (FTA/ETA), Evidential Reasoning (ER), Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) and Belief Rule Base (BRB). Subsequently, three typical case studies that have been carried out in the Yangtze River are introduced to illustrate the general application of those approaches. These examples aim to demonstrate how advanced methodologies can facilitate navigational risk assessment under high uncertainties.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Controlling excessive water production in mature oil fields has always been one major objective of the oil and gas industry. This objective calls for planning of more effective water-control treatments with optimized designs to obtain more attractive outcomes. Unfortunately, planning such treatments still represents a dilemma for conformance experts due to the lack of systematic design tools in the industry. This paper proposes and makes available a new design approach for bulk gel treatments by grouping designs of 62 worldwide field projects (1985-2018) according to gel volume-concentration ratio (VCR). After compiling them from SPE papers, the average gel volumes and polymer concentrations in the field projects were used to evaluate the gel VCR. Distributions of field projects were examined according to the gel VCR and the formation type using stacked histograms. A comprehensive investigation was performed to indicate the grouping criterion and design types of gel treatments. Based on mean-per-group strategy, the average VCR was estimated for each channeling and formation type to build a three-parameter design approach. Two approximations for the average polymer concentration and two correlations for minimum and maximum designs and were identified and included in the approach. The study shows that the gel VCR is a superior design criterion for in-situ bulk gel treatments. Field applications tend to aggregate in three project groups of clear separating VCR cut-offs (<1, 1-3, >3 bbl/ppm). The channeling type is the dividing or distributing criterion of the gel projects among the three project groups. We identified that VCRs<1 bbl/ppm are used to treat conformance problems that exhibit pipe-like channeling usually presented in unconsolidated and fractured formations with very long injection time (design type I). For fracture-channeling problems frequently presented in naturally or hydraulically-fractured formations, VCRs of 1-3 bbl/ppm are used (design type II). Large gel treatments with VCR>3 bbl/ppm are performed to address matrix-channeling often shown in matrix-rock formations and fracture networks (design type III). Results show that the VCR approach reasonably predicts the gel volume and the polymer concentration in training (R2 of 0.93 and 0.67) and validation (AAPE <22%) samples. Besides its novelty, the new approach is systematic, practical, and accurate, and will facilitate the optimization of the gel treatments to improve their performances and success rate.

The worldwide largest market segment, the B2A/B2G (Business-to-Administration/Business-to-Government) however, has until now received little or no attention in the literature. In the theoretical part of this paper, a focus has been placed on the measurements, how a company is able to find the right approach to operate its business successfully in this very specific business segment, where the players have completely different motivations. The aim of this paper is to gain insight into the basic concepts what rules must be followed to avoid delays, errors and losses, especially considering suppliers, who want to work internationally. This paper is complemented by a case study of an infrastructure product (sewage pipe system), that was manufactured and successfully launched and installed in the Philippines. This research shows the strategy for an infrastructure product market penetration for a new player in the market, with a „non-existent “product.

Abstract:
AbstractFracture growth in layered formations with depth-dependent properties has been a topic of interest amongst researchers because of its critical influence on well performance. This paper revisits some of the existing height-growth models and discusses the evaluation process of a new and modified model developed after incorporating additional constraints. The net-pressure is the primary driver behind fracture propagation and the pressure distribution in the fracture plays an important role in vertical propagation, as it supplies the necessary energy for fracture advancement in the presence of opposing forces. The workflow adopted for this study included developing a preliminary model that solves a system of non-linear equations iteratively to arrive at fracture height versus net pressure mapping. The theoretical results were then compared to those available in the literature. The solution set was then extended to a 100-layer model after incorporating additional constraints using superposition techniques. The predicted outcomes were finally compared to the fracture height observations made in the field on several treatments.A reasonable agreement between model-predicted and observed height was observed when a comparison between the two was made, for most cases. The majority of these treatments were pumped in vertical wells, at low injection rates of up to 8.0 bbl/min (0.021 m3/s) where net pressures were intentionally restricted to 250 psi (1.72 MPa) in order to prevent fracture rotation to the horizontal plane. The leak-off was minimal given the low permeability formations. In some cases, however, the pumping parameters and fluid imparted pressure distribution appeared to dominate. Overall, it was apparent that for a slowly advancing fracture front, which is the case in low injection rate treatments, the fracture height could be predicted with reasonable accuracy. This condition could also be met in high rate treatments pumped down multiple perforation clusters such as in horizontal wells, though fracture-height measurement may not be as straightforward as in vertical wells. The model developed under the current study is suitable for vertical wells where fracture treatments are pumped at low injection rates. The solid-mechanics solution that is presented here is independent of pumping parameters and can be readily implemented to assist in selection of critical design parameters prior to the job, with a wide range of applicability worldwide.

Abstract:
Abstract Gravel packing in a multilayer reservoir during an infill development project requires treating each zone individually, one after the other, based on reservoir characterization. This paper discusses the installation of an enhanced 7-in. multizone system to achieve both technical and operational efficiency, and the lessons learned that enabled placement of an optimized high-rate water pack (HRWP) in the two lower zones and an extension pack in the uppermost zone. This new approach helps make multizone cased-hole gravel-pack (CHGP) completions a more technically viable and cost-effective solution. Conventional CHGPs are limited to either stack-pack completions, which can incur high cost because of the considerable rig time required for multizone operations, or alternate-path single-trip multizone completions that treat all the target zones simultaneously, with one pumping operation. However, this method does not allow for individual treatment to suit reservoir characterization. The enhanced 7-in. multizone system can significantly reduce well completion costs and pinpoint the gravel placement technique for each zone, without pump-rate limitations caused by excessive friction in the long interval system, and without any fiuid-loss issues after installation because of the modular sliding side-door (SSD) screen design feature. A sump packer run on wireline acts as a bottom isolation packer and as a depth reference for subsequent tubing-conveyed perforating (TCP) and wellbore cleanup (WBCU) operations. All three zones were covered by 12-gauge wire-wrapped modular screens furnished with blank pipe, packer extension, and straddled by two multizone isolation packers between the zones, with a retrievable sealbore gravel-pack packer at the top. The entire assembly was run in a single trip, therefore rig time optimization was achieved. The two lower zones were treated with HRWPs, while the top zone was treated with an extension pack. During circulation testing on the lowermost zone, high pumping pressure was recorded, and after thorough observation of both pumping parameters and tool configuration, it was determined that the reduced inner diameter (ID) in the shifter might have been a causal factor, thereby restricting the flow area. This was later addressed with the implementation of a perforated pup joint placed above the MKP shifting tool. The well was completed within the planned budget and time and successfully put on sand-free production, exceeding the field development planning (FDP) target. The enhanced 7-in. multizone system enabled the project team to beat the previous worldwide track record, which was an HRWP treatment only. As a result of proper fluid selection and rigorous laboratory testing, linear gel was used to transport 3 ppa of slurry at 10 bbl/min, resulting in a world-first extension pack with a 317-lbm/ft packing factor.

Abstract:
Abstract The Walloons coal measures located in Surat Basin (eastern Australia) is a well-known coal seam gas play that has been under production for several years. The well completion in this play is primarily driven by coal permeability which varies from 1 Darcy or more in regions with significant natural fractures to less than 1md in areas with underdeveloped cleat networks. For an economic development of the latter, fracturing treatment designs that effectively stimulate numerous and often thin coals seams, and enhance inter-seam connectivity, are a clear choice. Fracture stimulation of Surat basin coals however has its own challenges given their unique geologic and geomechanical features that include (a) low net to gross ratio of ~0.1 in nearly 300 m (984.3 ft) of gross interval, (b) on average 60 seams per well ranging from 0.4 m to 3 m in thickness, (c) non-gas bearing and reactive interburden, and (d) stress regimes that vary as a function of depth. To address these challenges, low rate, low viscosity, and high proppant concentration coiled tubing (CT) conveyed pinpoint stimulation methods were introduced basin-wide after successful technology pilots in 2015 (Pandey and Flottmann 2015). This novel stimulation technique led to noticeable improvements in the well performance, but also highlighted the areas that could be improved – especially stage spacing and standoff, perforation strategy, and number of stages, all aimed at maximizing coal coverage during well stimulation. This paper summarizes the findings from a 6-well multi-stage stimulation pilot aimed at studying fracture geometries to improve standoff efficiency and maximizing coal connectivity amongst various coal seams of Walloons coal package. In the design matrix that targeted shallow (300 to 600 m) gas-bearing coal seams, the stimulation treatments varied in volume, injection rate, proppant concentration, fluid type, perforation spacing, and standoff between adjacent stages. Treatment designs were simulated using a field-data calibrated, log-based stress model. After necessary adjustments in the field, the treatments were pumped down the CT at injection rates ranging from 12 to 16 bbl/min (0.032 to 0.042 m3/s). Post-stimulation modeling and history-matching using numerical simulators showed the dependence of fracture growth not only on pumping parameters, but also on depth. Shallower stages showed a strong propensity of limited growth which was corroborated by additional field measurements and previous work in the field (Kirk-Burnnand et al. 2015). These and other such observations led to revision of early guidelines on standoff and was considered a major step that now enabled a cost-effective inclusion of additional coal seams in the stimulation program. The learnings from the pilot study were implemented on development wells and can potentially also serve as a template for similar pinpoint completions worldwide.

Abstract:
Forest and wildland fires are a natural part of ecosystems worldwide, but large fires in particular can cause societal, economic and ecological disruption. Fires are an important source of greenhouse gases and black carbon that can further amplify and accelerate climate change. In recent years, large forest fires in Sweden demonstrate that the issue should also be considered in other parts of Fennoscandia. This final report of the project “Forest fires in Fennoscandia under changing climate and forest cover (IBA ForestFires)” funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, synthesises current knowledge of the occurrence, monitoring, modelling and suppression of forest fires in Fennoscandia. The report also focuses on elaborating the role of forest fires as a source of black carbon (BC) emissions over the Arctic and discussing the importance of international collaboration in tackling forest fires. The report explains the factors regulating fire ignition, spread and intensity in Fennoscandian conditions. It highlights that the climate in Fennoscandia is characterised by large inter-annual variability, which is reflected in forest fire risk. Here, the majority of forest fires are caused by human activities such as careless handling of fire and ignitions related to forest harvesting. In addition to weather and climate, fuel characteristics in forests influence fire ignition, intensity and spread. In the report, long-term fire statistics are presented for Finland, Sweden and the Republic of Karelia. The statistics indicate that the amount of annually burnt forest has decreased in Fennoscandia. However, with the exception of recent large fires in Sweden, during the past 25 years the annually burnt area and number of fires have been fairly stable, which is mainly due to effective fire mitigation. Land surface models were used to investigate how climate change and forest management can influence forest fires in the future. The simulations were conducted using different regional climate models and greenhouse gas emission scenarios. Simulations, extending to 2100, indicate that forest fire risk is likely to increase over the coming decades. The report also highlights that globally, forest fires are a significant source of BC in the Arctic, having adverse health effects and further amplifying climate warming. However, simulations made using an atmospheric dispersion model indicate that the impact of forest fires in Fennoscandia on the environment and air quality is relatively minor and highly seasonal. Efficient forest fire mitigation requires the development of forest fire detection tools including satellites and drones, high spatial resolution modelling of fire risk and fire spreading that account for detailed terrain and weather information. Moreover, increasing the general preparedness and operational efficiency of firefighting is highly important. Forest fires are a large challenge requiring multidisciplinary research and close cooperation between the various administrative operators, e.g. rescue services, weather services, forest organisations and forest owners is required at both the national and international level.
