Background: A wealth of studies has demonstrated the detrimental effects of exposure to maternal stress in utero on emotional psychopathology in childhood. Many of these effects have been attributed to foetal programming of offspring brain development during gestation. Research has also demonstrated an association between exposure to prenatal maternal depression and offspring childhood maltreatment. The main aim of this thesis is to investigate the long-term effects of offspring exposure to prenatal maternal depression on depressive psychopathology in young adulthood, and whether exposure to c

The study of Celtic, Germanic, and Celtiberian women is an area of gender and historical focus that has only recently been addressed by academic scholars – and then only to a limited degree. The fractured understanding of this area of history is, in part, due to a shortage of relevant primary written sources and archaeological material. In part, it is also due to a language barrier, since research into this field has the potential to include more than a dozen modern and ancient European languages, as well as several regional dialects. Abstract:
Coral reefs are arguably the most threatened marine habitat because of multiple anthropogenic stressors degrading the health and resilience of these systems. In the past 20 years there have been increasing observations of mass coral bleaching and mortality associated with increasing water temperatures in the tropics. Reefs provide ecosystem services worth billions of dollars to people living in tropical coastal areas and are the architects of one of the most beautiful structures found on earth. Conserving these habitats is paramount, and conservation planning must contend with climate change a

This thesis is composed of three chapters each of which deals with markets with agents who are not fully rational. The first chapter aims to understand the relationship between Word-of-Mouth marketing and traditional advertisement. With the advent of internet and social network web-sites, the cost of Word-of-Mouth marketing reduced dramatically. This chapter mainly analyses the effect of this change on the traditional advertisement efforts. The second chapter analyses the market implications of manipulable consumers. Manipulable consumers are defined as the consumers whose beliefs about the fu

Following the war in Kosovo in 1999, the international community embarked on the most extensive international peace- and state-building project to date. From the early UN administration of Kosovo until the end of 'supervised independence' in 2012, various international organisations played a critical role in shaping the post-war polity. Throughout this engagement, the international community was driven by normative commitments to multi-ethnicity. However, while international organisations were committed to making Kosovo 'multi-ethnic', lack of clarity prevailed about what this goal entailed, o

Phytoplankton blooms compromise the quality of freshwater ecosystems and the efficient processing of water by treatment works worldwide. This research aims to determine whether in-situ filamentous biofiltration processes mediated by living roots and synthetic filters as media can reduce or remove the phytoplankton loading (micro-algae and cyanobacteria) prior to a potable water treatment works intake. The underlying biofiltration mechanisms were investigated using field and laboratory studies. A novel macroscale biofilter with three plant species, named the "Living-Filter", installed in Farmoo

Borderlands are critical security zones but remain poorly understood. In regions plagued by drug violence and conflict, violent groups compete for territorial control, cooperate in illegal cross-border activities, and substitute for the functions of the state in these areas. Despite undermining physical security, fuelling fear, and challenging the state’s sovereignty, the exact modi operandi of these groups are little known. Against this backdrop, this thesis explores how different interactions among violent non-state actors (VNSAs) in the Colombian-Ecuadorian and Colombian-Venezuelan borderla

The developing distal cranial sensory ganglia of the chick present an interesting and tractable model for the study of general processes of neural development. While the early stages of placodal neurogenesis, including induction of the placodes and initiation of the neurogenic programme, have been extensively studied, little is known about the molecular mechanisms that regulate migration of placode-derived neuroblasts and their aggregation to form ganglia. These questions have been addressed in the context of the trigeminal ganglion, however it remains unclear whether these principles apply to

This study examines the ways in which public participation in the production of scientific knowledge, influences the practices and expertise of the scientists in Galaxy Zoo, an online Big Data citizen science initiative. The need for citizen science in the field of Astronomy arose in response to the challenges of rapid advances in data gathering technologies, which demanded pattern recognition capabilities that were too advanced for existing computer algorithms. To address these challenges, Galaxy Zoo scientists recruited volunteers through their online website, a strategy which proved to be r

The rapid loss of the world’s tropical rainforest has serious consequences for mankind and global biodiversity. The conservation and sustainable management of tropical rainforests is helped greatly by the longterm storage and predictable availability of germplasm. Cryopreservation is one of the main methods of conservation. However, protocols must be developed quickly since the seeds of many tropical rainforest trees germinate rapidly and are subject to fungal contamination. Their availability is also unpredictable and hence, often, only small samples are available. This thesis investigates th

In this thesis we study gauge/gravity duals in the 5d/6d AdS/CFT correspondence. We start with field theories defined on squashed five-spheres with SU(3) × U(1) symmetry. These five-sphere backgrounds are continuously connected to the round sphere. We find a one-parameter family of 3/4 BPS deformations and a two-parameter family of (generically) 1/4 BPS deformations. The gravity duals are constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplift to massive type IIA supergravity.
