In studies of the ocean it has become conventional to retain only the component of the Coriolis force associated with the radial component of the Earth’s rotation vector, the so-called “traditional approximation”. We investigate the role of the “non-traditional” component of the Coriolis force, corresponding to the non-radial component of the rotation vector, in transporting abyssal waters across the equator. We first derive a non-traditional generalisation of the multi-layer shallow water equations, which describe the flow of multiple superposed layers of inviscid, incompressible fluid with c

Over the past years research and development on computer architecture has shifted from uni-processor systems to multi-core architectures. This transition has created new incentives in software development because in order for the software to scale it has to be highly parallel. Traditional synchronization primitives based on mutual exclusion locking are challenging to use and therefore are only efficiently employed by a minority of expert programmers. Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is used as a source of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for transplantation but shows defective homing to the bone marrow niche and delayed haematological reconstitution. Following transplantation, HSCs will home to the bone marrow in response to the CXCL12 chemokine, adhere to the bone marrow sinusoidal endothelial cells and then migrate into and lodge in bone marrow niches. In addition to CXCR4, a variety of molecules have been described as being important in these processes. In this laboratory, junctional adhesion molecule-A (JAM-A) was shown to be expressed on hu

This practice-based PhD explores the role of physical material as used in art, in social art processes. Here the material stone is the starting point for geological studies and practical explorations such as photography and a stone-carving project. Detailed observation of the phases of work in this project then lead on to elaborate a working model for creative processes that might form the basis of participatory social art practice. Can the experiences that we have when we eat and smell make a meaningful contribution to art? Often referred to as ‘the bodily senses’ or ‘the lower senses’, the chemical senses of taste, olfaction and chemesthesis have been determined as unsuitable for inclusion in art in classical philosophical literature. This research challenges that exclusion by exploring the classical judgements and asking if these senses have anything to contribute to contemporary art. If so, what are the contributions of these senses and their limitations? This is new research within art theory that draws upon multidis

It examines how his revelations (gter ma) rooted in the historic spirituality of Tibet, continue and adapt into the twenty first century.
