In studies of the ocean it has become conventional to retain only the component of the Coriolis force associated with the radial component of the Earth’s rotation vector, the so-called “traditional approximation”. This thesis presents two analyses of data recorded by the ATLAS detector during proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The first is the implementation of a vertex counting algorithm to measure the luminosity recorded by ATLAS during collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 8 TeV in 2012. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame retardants that were added to many consumer products and have emerged as persistent and bioaccumulative environmental contaminants. Building upon the principles of biological solar energy conversion, artificial photosynthesis can be broken down into four essential processes: harvesting of visible light, charge (electron-hole) separation, oxidation of water to dioxygen, and fuel formation. These five-sphere backgrounds are continuously connected to the round sphere. We find a one-parameter family of 3/4 BPS deformations and a two-parameter family of (generically) 1/4 BPS deformations.
