Abstract:
This thesis proposes a new school of literary analysis: Kinky Criticism. This critical theory will examine the presence in literature of themes related to BDSM, an acronym referring to bondage/discipline, domination/submission, and sadism/masochism. My purpose in examining this power exchange and sadomasochism in literature is threefold. Firstly, I aim to reveal the presence of kinky themes in not only a range of literary works, but also leave the reader aware of kink present in everyday human interactions. Secondly, through this application to literature, Kinky Criticism sheds new light on the techniques of characterization and adds complexity to the dynamics between characters. Finally, Kinky Criticism provides a new perspective that leads to unexpected conclusions about hotly debated topics in literature, such as the infamous sodomites of Dante’s Inferno. Although a few scholars have commented on kinky themes, their analyses have not yet gained the coherence of a critical movement. This thesis aims to outline the tenets of Kinky Criticism and to establish not only its legitimacy as a critical lens, but also Kinky Criticism’s unique contributions to the interpretation of three major literary works: Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls, and D.H. Lawrence’s Women in Love.

Abstract:
This research focuses on the methods of introduction into BDSM, role identification, and the management of private information as it relates to BDSM. The method utilized for this study was in-depth interviews of fifteen current participants in the BDSM subculture. It is primarily through peer association, sexual scripting, and impression management that new members are introduced, learn their role, and manage their information within the BDSM subculture. It was found that peer association is the primary method of socializing members. Role identification is accomplished through both a method of sexual scripting as well as complimentary differentiation, the process by which a stimulus is transmitted and received, and subsequent stimuli are transmitted back, reinterpreted and responded to. It is through impression management and stigma management that members learn to maintain the privacy of their participation. Future research should include additional analysis with a larger sample size to determine if the current findings will continue to hold true.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine escort-business with a focus on sales of BDSM-services (Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadism and Masochism). The study is based on qualitative interviews with three informants providing BDSM-services, as well as a survey with 96 men who requested domination of escorts (the survey was carried out by an escort in the 1980s). The analysis of this material resulted in the identification of three themes on which the study centers: The personal experiences of the three escorts, the interaction between the escorts and the clients, and the changes over time when it comes to the performance of BDSM-services. The study has a gender perspective with a focus on feminism and queer-theory. The important conclusions are that there are several differences between prostitution having a focus on BDSM-services and other prostitution. Sexual intercourse is not a common occurrence. Role-playing games involving domination and submission, physical pain, humiliation and fantasies are instead central elements. Due to the security risks submissive services have been assumed not to exist in prostitution. In this study, however, two of the informants present themselves as submissive. Nothing in the empirical material suggests a greater security risk for escorts providing BDSM-services than other sexsellers. Instead, the escorts themselves characterize the phenomenon by straightforwardness, upright communication, and pre-agreed rules of the interaction.

Abstract:
The focus of this research is an exploration of BDSM experience as it emerges from the complex interactions of kink activities and relationships. It argues that practices which are ostensibly not religious can be understood as contributing to personal processes of religioning. Enriching debates about living religion, I offer the idea of gestalt as a tool to address the question of how examples of a given practice which is a part of religioning might be distinguished from those where it is not. A gestalt is something felt to be more or other than the sum of its constituent parts; it is an emergent, felt quality that is neither perceptual nor cognitive. A sense of gestalt arises unpredictably from an individual's whole experience of a given phenomenon as it is integrated into their world and, when it appears, it changes the value, significance and meaning of the phenomenon. Thus, kink experience is presented as a crucible where personal outcomes and meaning can be distilled from the concentrated matter therein. I argue that the significance of a given experience is not located solely within any intrinsic quality ascribed to it, rather, it is in what the experiencer subsequently constructs from the refined experience.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis explores the experience of pain for people who live with chronic pain and engage in BDSM1 (or ‘kinky’) pain play. It is situated within disability studies, taking the position that chronic pain is a disability, and in the use of crip theory to explore narratives of experience. The narratives, told through multiple, detailed interviews were explored in the contexts of crip theory, disability, and medical and social understandings of pain. The thesis addresses three core aims; firstly, to hear narratives of experiences of chronic pain and BDSM play. Secondly, to explore those narratives to reveal experiences and understandings of pain sought by those who live with chronic pain and also engage in BDSM. Finally, to challenge normative conceptions of pain through a critical crip reading of the narratives. The narratives revealed a range of complex experiences. I drew out these narratives in three broad themes: the role of crip time in living with chronic pain; the multiple uses of BDSM – including pleasure and control of the self – and the role of stigma and abjection. The thesis has made a number of original contributions to knowledge. Firstly, it revealed how pain is discursively constructed as needing control and containment, but how non-normative methods of control and bodily engagement are not necessarily understood as such. Secondly, the thesis exposes how pain is assumed to be wholly destructive to the self, but instead ways to integrate pain into the self are sought. Thirdly, it adds to crip theory by expanding the notion of crip time to reflect the experience of living with chronic pain. Finally, by demonstrating how the narratives challenge understandings of the ‘normal,’ as reflected in discourses of chronic pain. The thesis thus exposes how normative constructions of pain are a part of the performance and construction of able-bodyminded heterosexuality.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to hightlight experiences of living in a relationship where BDSM is being exercised. The acronym is an umbrella term for bondage/discipline, dominance/submission and sadomasochism. The study is based on qualitative interviews with five persons who define themselves as BDSM practitioners. The overall questions of this study are: How does the BDSM practice appear in everyday life? How did the practice start and how has it developed over time? What's included in the sexual BDSM practice? The empirical material has been analyzed with interactionism as the theoritical framework. The picture that emerges is complex. To define oneself as a BDSM practitioner might mean different things for different people where the extent of the practice, what it consists of and how integrated it is in the lives of people might vary from person to person. But despite differences there are also recurring, common patterns in the stories of the informants. All of them describe the practice in positive terms. To a great extent the practice has to do with sexuality where an explicit power exchange, an assuming of dominant and submissive roles and an everyday life filled with rituals, rules and agreements are described as being key elements. Punishment, in the form of physical pain or humiliation, is common when the rules are not obeyed. All the interviewees use safewords to make sure both are comfortable about what's happening. Some sort of tool is utilized by all. The most common are whips, bonds, chains and locks, paddles, clamps/clothespins, knives, butt plugs and ropes. There's an occupation among the informants to find and to form strategies to cope and to adapt the BDSM role to other roles and here the parental role is the most apparent. Also an ambition to create a balance between the personal norms and the norms of the BDSM culture and those of the overall society can be seen. The interviewees express a search for answers to why one practices BDSM. In this process they return to experiences, almost exclusively of a destructive nature, and they wonder if these experiences have affected their sexuality and their preference for BDSM. It's like this even if the common attitude in society actually has become more accepting, for example with the help of media, recent research and the fact that it's not anymore is considered being a disorder.

Abstract:

Proceeding from ethnographic research conducted in digital virtual 3D Second Life world from 2013 to 2015, an analisys to identify and study the BDSM sociabilities as the relations of affection, love and sex among practitioners of this non-hegemonic kind of sexuality was carried. In this process, were observed issues such as sexual virtuality and body building for cibersexualities and the relationship between pain, humiliation and affection, love and gratitude in the hierarchical relationships of dominant and submissive participants of the BDSM communities encompassed in the online universe. Based on participant observation and interviews with virtual world SL residents, this work aims at understanding love relationships and negotiations that take place amidst sexual practices and morality values of the community. The relationships between practitioners draw a complex web of affections, enabling a micropolitics of emotions which is reflected in actions of care, gratitude and reciprocity. The notion of BDSM as a transgression, a sort of practice that, by being rationalized and controlled, in the search for its legitimacy, creates its own interdictions- such as romantic love and vanilla relationships- is also addressed.

The object of this investigation is the legitimating discourse of the adherents of sexual practices traditionally classified as perversions, called BDSM by their adepts which describes various practices or sexual games: B stands for Bondage, their pair B & D stands for bondage and Discipline, their pairs D & S stands for Domination and Submission, and the pair S & M stands for Sadism and Masochism. BDSM is also linked to fetishism. The definitions of BDSM analyzed were taken from the Internet, which had it specificities considered. The historic contextualization of the object is presented and discussed through the medical and psychiatric construction of sexual perversions. The analysis of the BDSM discourse and its comparison with historical psychiatric definitions indicates the central role the notion of consent plays in legitimating the practice of BDSM and in distinguishing it from pathological behaviors, in constant dialog with contemporary psychiatry.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As women navigate the intersecting meanings of feminism and submission, some struggle to reconcile their feminist politics and submissive practice (i.e., belief in equality and desire to yield authority). Bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism (BDSM) has been examined through diverse feminist lenses, including radical feminism, postcolonial world-travelling, and a sex-critical approach. However, scant empirical research focuses on the intersection of feminist and submissive identities. The purpose of this collected papers dissertation was to better understand the identity navigation of women in the BDSM community who identify as feminist and submissive. Two studies were conducted to explore this gap. Study #1, a structured literature review of BDSM, examined how feminism and submission are discussed related to women who are feminist and submissive. Data were collected through a library database search, Google Scholar, reference scans, and Google Scholar Cited by. Important segments of data were identified and analyzed. Four themes emerged: feminism in the context of BDSM, normalization of BDSM, navigating identities, and power as transgressive. Implications focus on three areas: the importance of consent, transgression, and diversity; helping women understand and navigate identities; and reducing stigma through education. Study #2, a phenomenological study, explored how 23 women in the BDSM community perceive and navigate their feminist and submissive identities. Data were collected through interviews. Inductive analysis revealed six themes: feminist identity as distinct from feminist values, the complexity of submissive identity, women learn to accept their submissive identity in different ways, BDSM community perceived as generally accepting of feminist identity, feminist community perceived as not very accepting of submissive identity, and being out as feminist and as submissive. Implications focus on four areas: exploring how women challenge oppressions; understanding how women understand and negotiate consent; learning about how individuals learn about, develop, and engage in BDSM D/s relationships; and examining how college women experience these identities, feminism, submission, consent, and abuse while they develop as individuals. The findings can apply to counseling, feminism, sex education, higher education, adult education, and human resource development through incorporation into curriculum, training, and policies. Research and practice can be enhanced through exploring how consent is understood, operationalized, and violated; broadening discussions about identity development; and increasing awareness of how adults learn.

Abstract:

Despite the direct connection between anal sex and pleasure (Hite, 1981; Morin, 2010), the majority of academic literature on anal sex frames the topic in terms of homophobia (when referring to male-bodied people) and/or disease (Aguilar, 2017; Brody & Weiss, 2011; McBride & Fortenberry, 2010). While only two academic articles (Branfman & Stiritz, 2012; Branfman, Stiritz, & Anderson, 2017) have been published on the topic of anoreceptive heterosexual males (ARHMs), there is evidence of this type of sexuality dating back to Ancient Egypt and Greece (Bullough, 1976; Foucault, 1990b). This is indicative of the socially systemic heteronormativity and associated constructs of heterosexism, homophobia, and phallocentrism that can instill shame and stigma in those with non-conforming sexual preferences, such as ARHMs, BDSM practitioners, and BDSM-oriented ARHMs (Ayres & Leudeman, 2013; Bosson, Prewitt-Freilino, & Taylor, 2005; Crane & Crane-Seeber, 2003; Heasley, 2005; Taormino, 2008; Yost, 2010). Therefore, this research examined levels of heteronormativity, sexual shame, and sexual pride to determine whether higher levels of heteronormativity predict higher levels of sexual shame and lower levels of sexual pride in ARHMs, and whether heteronormativity, sexual shame, and sexual pride in ARHMs differ according to BDSM status. In multivariate linear regressions and independent-samples t-tests on data from 906 ARHMs, heteronormativity did not significantly contribute to the prediction of sexual shame in ARHMs; there was not a significant difference in heteronormativity between BDSM-oriented and non-BDSM-oriented ARHMs; there was a significant difference in sexual shame between BDSM-oriented and non-BDSM-oriented ARHMs, but not in the hypothesized direction (there were higher levels of sexual shame among BDSM-oriented ARHMs); and there was not a significant difference in sexual pride between BDSM-oriented and non-BDSM-oriented ARHMs. These findings highlight the nuance in sexual orientation and expression. It remains unclear whether the constructs of masculinity and heteronormativity are expanding to accommodate what were previously considered non-conforming sexual and gender expressions, or whether these constructs continue to obfuscate and repress through a manipulation of language that reinforces privilege. These findings have implications for clinicians who work with those who have both privileged and marginalized identities and/or sexual orientations.

Abstract:

BDSM (Bondage/Discipline, Dominance/Submission, Sadism/Masochism) has become more widely known as a common, nonpathological interest (Holvoet et al., 2017; Powell, 2010). However, there is still much stigma associated with romantic relationships within the BDSM community, the most deviant of which may be the 24/7 Dominant/submissive (D/s) relationship in which a Dominant partner is permanently in control of a submissive partner (Dancer, Kleinplatz, & Moser, 2006). The current study investigated different types of issues that may arise given the 24/7 D/s dynamic in order to better understand romantic relationships involving BDSM and the. Participants involved in 24/7 D/s relationships, other relationships involving BDSM, and relationships that do not incorporate BDSM were included and compared in this study. It was found that 24/7 relationships did contain significantly less equity than other types of relationships, and that people in other forms of BDSM relationships had the least amount of traditional gender role beliefs. Overall, the current study is one of the few to incorporate quantitative data regarding this population, and provides further information regarding the different types of relationships in the BDSM community.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study consists on an ethnography in three public fetishist/sadomasochistic parties (self-called BDSM parties) that take place in Rio de Janeiro. My aim was to investigate this kind of sociability, focusing on two important themes in Social Sciences: parties and sexuality. Bibliographic review and fieldwork analysis search for a dialog with these two themes by means of considering identity and gender issues.

Abstract:
This study is a qualitative examination of the definitions, beliefs, practices and the importance of consent within the Leather and Bondage, Domination, Sadomasochism (BDSM) communities using the experiences of those who identify as members of those communities. Through interviews with fifteen self-identified practitioners of BDSM/Leather, the research attempts to define consent, identify the importance of consent, and how consent is practiced within those lifestyles. It also seeks to address some of the commonly held misconceptions concerning the BDSM and Leather communities held by those outside the communities. The research attempts to establish how members of the communities define and practice consent in both their sexual and everyday lives. The standard definition of consent given was an "informed agreement between persons to act in an activity which is mutually beneficial for everybody involved." (I1) Additional elements to the basic definition included the necessity of a sound mind (I2 & I3), that the agreement is made willingly, free from coercion and outside influence - either from another person or from mind altering substances (I1,I2, I3, I6, I14), and that consent must be given by both the dominant and submissive partners. Also, consent for the Leather and BDSM practitioners interviewed included an understanding by all parties about what was expected, what the parties were and were not willing to do during the course of the interaction (the scene), and where consent stopped. At its most basic level the idea of consent was stated as "the ability to say yes." (I13)

Abstract:
In this essay, I interview six users from the website darkside.se, which is an internet community for BDSM practitioners. I’m using Judith Butlers theorys about performativity and heteronormativity, Gayle Rubins model the charmed circle; of which sexualities is regarded as approved and which is not, and Fanny Ambjörnssons explenation of queer theory. With the interviews as my material, I investigate how sex and gender is produced and used in BDSM and at Darkside. I discuss trans, heteronormativity, sexism and hierarchies of power related to sex and gender, in BDSM and at Darkside. I discover that most of my informants is experiencing different kinds of trouble or anxiety concerning their sexual practices in relation to sex and gender, and I examine which different strategies my informants are using to handle this complexes of problems.

Abstract:
Within the field of Counselling Psychology there is very little mention of Bondage and Discipline; Dominance and Submission; and Sadism and Masochism (BDSM). Given the wide range of activities that fall under the umbrella of BDSM (Weinberg, 2006), along with the associated stigma of BDSM (Wright, 2006), the exact prevalence of people engaging in it is unknown. However, the huge popularity of the Fifty Shades of Grey books and film (James, 2012, 2015) suggests that dominance and submission may be a common fantasy for far more people than was previously realised (Deahl, 2012). Previous research has concentrated on qualified therapists’ understandings of BDSM. To further improve training around this area this research explored the way in which trainees talk and think about BDSM. The epistemological orientation of this work is social constructionist, and therefore acknowledges that findings arise from a particular time and place. Three focus groups were conducted with a total of thirteen participants. Transcripts of the data was analysed using the six step process of Thematic Analysis (Braun and Clarke, 2006). The analysis generated seven major analytical themes in relation to the subject of BDSM. These included: ‘BDSM as unknown’, ‘BDSM and the parameters of consent’, ‘BDSM as abuse’, ‘BDSM as a pathology’, ‘Visibility of BDSM’, ‘BDSM occurring on a spectrum’ and ‘BDSM as a cause for concern’. Participants were tentative in their language about how they constructed BDSM, in particular within the theme of ‘BDSM as a pathology’. Participants delineated types of BDSM from ‘light, fluffy, playful’, to the more ‘murky, less sanitised and extreme’. Participants expressed their potential for shock if working with ‘extreme’ BDSM, which gave an insight into their thinking around the subject. These findings are discussed in relation to previous literature and their implications for practice. Further training in BDSM for counselling psychologists is recommended, in particular to enable trainees to engage critically in their own reactions to BDSM. Further research into the critical engagement of the wider field of sexualities is recommended.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Social scientific and sociological research on BDSM (an umbrellaterm for bondage/discipline, dominance/submission and sadomasochism) is agrowing field since the late 1990s. However, research focusing on youngerBDSM practitioners is lacking. Aim: Drawing on Simon and Gagnons (1986)concept of sexual scripting, the aim of this study is to examine meanings ofBDSM among young adult practitioners in Sweden 2019. Method: The study isbased on qualitative interviews with nine individuals, in the ages of 19 to 24years, who define themselves as BDSM practitioners. The material is analyzedthematically using sexual scripting theory. Result: The material is categorizedinto three main themes that includes a total of nine sub-themes; Consonances(“Communication and practice”, “Intimacy and relationships,” and “BDSM as asafe sphere”), Dissonances (“Dominant and equal” and “Negative experiences andabuse”), and Ambiguous harmonies (“Reason and emotion”, “Pleasure throughfeminization”, “Age scripts,” and “Different meanings in ‘self-cutting’”). Theanalysis shows that BDSM can contain positive, negative, and paradoxicalmeanings to young adult practitioners. How BDSM is perceived seems to berelated to whether scripts on different levels are congruent or incongruent.Discussion: The results are partly consistent with previous research, e.g. patternsof communication, sequences of events in practice, approaches to gender equality, conceptions of gender and age in BDSM sessions, and how BDSM is related tointimacy and relationships and experienced as a safe environment. A divergentfinding is that breathplay is considered common and ordinary. An analysis of selfcutting,in relation to self-harm behavior and BDSM, shows that self-cutting canhave several meanings.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to examine how four sexually dominant women understand their sexuality. It specifically concentrates upon how the women defines themselves as sexually dominant and what dominance means to them sexually but also what it means to them in everyday life and in general. Additionally this essay examines how the informants understand their sexual dominance in relation to their identity and in shaping their identity. In order to carry out the purpose of this thesis four women who define themselves in one way or another as sexually dominant have been interviewed. Furthermore the study focuses upon women who practice their sexual dominance through activities and expressions that are common in the world of bdsm.

Abstract:
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to improve the understanding of Sexual Objectification (SO) of gay African American males in the bondage, discipline, sadism, masochism (BDSM) community. Although many studies have been conducted on SO of women and other minority populations, there is a lack of research on the lived experience of gay African American males participating in the BDSM community. The theoretical framework for this study was Fredrickson and Roberts's objectification theory, with a conceptual framework focused on SO that gay African American males experienced while participating in the BDSM community. The research questions were designed to elicit the participants' experiences about their participation in the BDSM community. Ten gay African American males, selected through purposive sampling, described their reasons for participating in the BDSM community, what the participants gained from participating in the BDSM community, how they experienced SO, how they handled these experiences, and how these experiences changed them. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, coded, and analyzed by hand. The data were analyzed in 3 stages: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding techniques. Five themes emerged from the interviews: community, gained knowledge and freedom, verbal objectification, avoidance, and mistrust. This study contributes to the existing body of literature and promotes social change by fostering dialog about objectification. Through this dialog, behavioral patterns and cultural norms can be altered over time by increasing awareness about objectification and its effects on people. This study provided gay African American males a voice to discuss a phenomenon that impacts their lives.

Abstract:
The aim with this bachelor thesis was to gain a greater understanding for the power media holds in today’s society. To approach this we used a quantitative content analysis, were we analyzed 102 articles from Swedish printing press. This was made to be able to say something about how the media har created a hype around Fifty Shades as a phenomenon, and also to illustrate how Fifty Shades depiction of BDSM has been framed in the news coverage. We used the framing theory and the theory of media hype to reach the resulte that showed that media has created a hype around Fifty Shades. This indicate that the framing of the phenomenon has changed.

Abstract:
Research with individuals who practise consensual Bondage, Discipline, Domination, Submission, Sadism, Masochism (BDSM) has revealed a complex and multi-faceted phenomenon which serves various functions for its practitioners. Historical associations of BDSM practice with underlying psychopathology, despite empirical evidence to the contrary, may lead to misunderstanding among practitioner psychologists and potentially biased or culturally insensitive psychological treatment of BDSM-oriented individuals. This Q-methodological study investigated subjective understandings of BDSM among practitioner psychologists and whether these understandings were shared with or separate from those who practise BDSM. Forty practitioner psychologists and 40 BDSM practitioners completed a q-sorting task and brief questionnaire online. Comparable majority understandings of BDSM – as a complex phenomenon concerned mainly with power and pleasure – emerged between the psychologist and BDSM practitioner groups. Psychologists generally did not consider themselves particularly knowledgeable on the subject of BDSM, partly due to having received limited teaching and training. There is a need for raising awareness among practitioner psychologists of BDSM as a non-normative, minority sexuality.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This qualitative research is focuses on a reflection about the diversity sexual pleasure. In order to study the question, ten artists with various sexual tastes, practices and orientation have been involved. Three major themes have been elaborated on the basis of the data collected between 2013 and 2019 in France and especially in Alsace and Paris. Firstly, descriptive portraits of informants are presented, including a reflection on the challenge of categorizing this population with existing typologies. Subsequently, it was important to give consistency to this panel, with a focus on their approaches of sexuality. To them, sexuality is a game, an adventure, in other words a hectic emotional experience, sometimes hazardous. We will examine the strategies developed in order to maintain this playful, liminoid activity over time. We will also consider the impact of this liminoid desire, which has become their norm, on community relations (distinction and rejection). Finally, the problem of performing an interaction that meets the ethical and erotic principles of the population will be discussed. We will see how informants negotiate the interaction between the necessity of a safe and satisfying interaction for each partner and their desire for adventure

Abstract:
This essay explored gendered embodiement within the practice of kinbaku, also called shibari or Japanese rope bondage. The research has been done within the Swedish kinbaku community using ethnographic methods consisting of interviews with practitioners of kinbaku and complete participation observations. By using phenomenology of touch as a methodological and theoretical approach together with theories of somatechnics the intimate experiences and relationships practitioners have to kinbaku, the practice of rope bondage can be understood as processes of embodiement through affect, sensation and technology. By using this understanding of kinbaku questions are asked about how these embodied positions are gendered and further what possibilities, restrictions and potential of renegotiating these positions are embedded within the practice.

Abstract:
Kink has a long history of being condemned in Western society. Even though kink is prevalent in popular culture (and in many people’s bedrooms) it continues to be considered abnormal and associated with deviance. Through nine in-depth qualitative interviews, this thesis explores the experiences of kinksters with kink, their engagement with the kink community, and their negotiations of stigma in everyday life. These experiences are analyzed using Foucault’s theories on discourse and technologies of the self and Goffman’s conceptualization of stigma. The thesis found that while the social condemnation of kink has resulted in members of the kink community struggling to manage their identity as kinksters, they also find joy and a sense of belonging within the kink community. Moreover, through the kink community, kinksters learn to conceptualize and practice consent in a new way; one that is rooted in being an ethical subject. The thesis concludes with a call to challenge the normative tropes and stigmatic assumptions of deviance that continue to marginalize and oppress kinksters.

Abstract:
Historically, kinky sexualities and sexual behaviors have been understood as pathological or perverse. Such misunderstandings and misrepresentations have contributed to the development and perpetuation of kink stigma. The aim of this retrospective, cross-sectional, correlational research study was to explore the potential relationship(s) between pathology, personality, and kinky sexual behaviors/roles in adulthood. Guided by queer-feminist theory, the research questions addressed whether personality traits, experiences of childhood trauma, or a combination thereof, were predictors for kinky behaviors/roles in adulthood. A multi measure, anonymous, and confidential survey was distributed online including the Childhood Traumatic Events Scale as a childhood trauma questionnaire, the Mini-IPIP, and the sadomasochism checklist. Multiple regression analyses were used, and the results showed that experiences of childhood trauma, personality characteristics, or the combination of both were not significant predictors for kinky sexual behaviors in adulthood. Among the sample surveyed, there were no significant relationships found between the variables to provide sufficient evidence to support the negative perceptions and stigmatization of the kinky population. These findings contribute to social change by better informing deficiencies in the historical pathology-based and personality-based academic literature on kinky sexualities. Additionally, the findings of the present study provide others with an increased awareness and understanding of the kink community and lifestyles which benefits evolving society and psychological professionals, scholars, and the kink community.

Abstract:

BDSM includes a variety of acronyms: Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, and Sadism and Masochism, and is rooted in sane, safe, and consensual sex. The understanding that BDSM is abnormal or deviant is rooted in the notion that sexual pleasure derived from unconventional methods is pathological, and is a manifestation of childhood trauma and/or poor adjustment to society. This additionally translates to the notion that one who engages in consensual non-conventional sexual behavior has poor self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of childhood trauma among individuals who practice BDSM and how this relates to their self-esteem. The exploratory study used a questionnaire including demographic data, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Self Report (CTQ-SR; Bernstein & Fink, 1998) to determine the presence of childhood trauma, including physical abuse, physical neglect, emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and sexual abuse and Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) to determine the degree of self-esteem. A comparison was made between individuals who self-identified as practicing BDSM and those who do not. The research questions were as follows: Does childhood trauma, including physical abuse, physical neglect, emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and sexual abuse differ based on engagement in BDSM? Does self-esteem differ based on engagement in BDSM among individuals with a history of childhood trauma? Does self-esteem differ based on engagement in BDSM among individuals with no history of childhood trauma? A MANOVA and factorial analysis was used to analyze the data.

Abstract:
Undersökningen görs kvalitativt, och utgår ifrån främst Normal People men även Fifty Shades-trilogin.

Abstract:

Abstract:
While many female contemporary art practitioners employ erotic fetishism in their work, the discourse surrounding fetishism is still perceived as primarily masculine. Critical feminist theorists are revisiting the fetish in order to explore previously marginalised and undervalued considerations of female sexual agency. While these theorists hint at fetish's strategic creative application and its ability to question hegemonic depictions of passive femininity, analyses do not articulate how sexual fetishism could be understood as a distinct creative stratagem. In response, this creative practice-led research project renegotiates fetishism as a critical feminist strategy and a distinct creative method in artistic practice.

Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis aims to explore the lived experience of participating in consensual bondage, discipline, dominance & submission and sadism & masochism (BDSM). Traditionally, psychologists have researched this phenomenon from an external perspective, conceptualising it as pathological. By employing a phenomenological approach, I aim to understand this multifaceted phenomenon from the inside, by listening to the voices of those who engage in BDSM. The research is separated into two stages. For the first stage of empirical work I interviewed five practitioners of consensual BDSM about their experiences. This stage was designed to be particularly broad and exploratory with the aim of understanding more about the subcultures associated with BDSM, and also to inform the second, more focused stage of research. The findings were analysed using the descriptive phenomenological approach. The subsequent stage involved interviews with nine practitioners; including four that were previously interviewed for stage one. The aim here was to elucidate the specific constituents of BDSM that held erotic significance for participants. The template approach was utilised as the method of analysis. The complexity of BDSM is illustrated by the subtle variations in the erotic scripts of participants. The co-creation of fantasy was of central importance to the experience, as were measures employed in order to maintain the fantasy and ensure its success. The notion of authenticity was fundamental to the experience, which ensured all participants were invested in the erotic scene and allowed immersion into the bubble of fantasy and the exclusion of the ‘real’ world. A sense of care, trust and partnership were vital in order to achieve the erotic atmosphere, concepts that appear contrary to the kinds of sexual activities involved. This research presents an exciting account of the lived experience of BDSM, illuminating the erotic diversities and nuances related to this phenomenon. It is also the aim that this research contributes to the increasing body of work that investigates and reports BDSM from non-pathologising perspectives.

Abstract:
In an attempt to address the issues in research and theory on consent, this thesis explores what consent can be seen as "doing" through an 'Intuitive Inquiry' (Anderson 2011a) and 'Agential Realism' (Barad 2007). Various manifestations of consent appears through: the experience of the researcher, consent research and theory, consent legislation, interviews with professionals in intimate-sexual consent, and, feminist fanzines. Consent evokes issues around agency, power, communication, respect, violence, risk, morals and ethics that go beyond sexual-intimate negotiation. Consent emerges as multiple, complex and fluid in 'intra-action' (ibid.) with the context. Entanglements and paradoxes of consent are further explored in 'diffractive analysis' (ibid.) through "bodily autonomy" and"rights/obligations". As a phenomenon, consent appears to make agency and power intelligible (to different degrees), but, can not be said to provide a viable strategy against sexual violence. The tenets of consent discourse risk (re)producing anxieties around intimacy and sex, responsibilizing survivors and obfuscating sexual violence. Further and improved research on communication in everyday sexual negotiation, sexual violence, consent legislation and what consent "does" is urgently needed.Through creative method and new epistemology the thesis (re)presents a knowledge process true to lived experience, as well as, an invitation to pull the terrible wonderful world, it's complexities, and us in it, closer.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This report describes Bigraphical DSL (BDSL), a domain-specific language for reactive systems, rooted in the mathematical spirit of the bigraph theory devised by Robin Milner. BDSL is not only a platform-agnostic programming language but also a development framework for reactive applications, written in the Java programming language, with a focus on stability and interoperability. The report serves as a user manual mainly elaborating on how to write and execute BDSL programs, further covering several features such as how to incorporate program verification. Moreover, the manual procures some best practices on design patterns in form of code listings. The BDSL development framework comes with a ready-to-use interpreter and may be a helpful research tool to experiment with the underlying bigraph theory. The framework is further intended for building reactive applications and systems based on the theory of bigraphical reactive systems.:1 Introduction 1.1 Bigraphical Reactive Systems and Programming . . . . . 1.2 Installation 1.3 How to write and run BDSL programs? 1.4 Further Help 1.5 Remarks 2 General Usage of the BDSL Interpreter Tool 2.1 The CLI Interpreter of BDSL 2.2 Supplying a BDSL Program to the Interpreter 2.3 Externalized Configuration 3 BDSL Program Structure 3.1 Elements of a BDSL program 3.2 Main Block 3.3 Scoping, Namespaces and Imports 3.4 Classes and Variables 3.5 Event Listeners/Callbacks 4 Predefined Methods in BDSL 4.1 Printing to the Console 4.2 Loading Bigraphs 4.3 Synthesizing Random Bigraphs 4.4 Exporting Bigraph Variables 4.5 Executing BRSs 5 Examples 5.1 Basic Mathematical Calculations the Bigraphical Way 5.2 Importing External Libraries 5.3 Pathfinding: Naive Blind Search 5.4 Mutual Exclusion Problem 6 Advanced Topics 6.1 User-defined Functions 6.2 Using the Interpreter Programmatically 6.3 IDE Support 7 Conclusion 7.1 Future Work References Appendix A Configuration File for the BDSL Interpreter B BDSL Sample Programs C Using the BDSL Interpreter Programmatically

Abstract:
The Boycott, Divestments and Sanctions Against Israel campaign or BDS is an international social movement which emerges as a response to the international community’s persistent lack of determination regarding the unsustainable and devastating situation of the Palestinian people, who are living either in exile or under discrimination, segregation and institutional repression, situation they have been going through for seven decades. The three objectives of the BDS campaign are based on international law and on United Nations resolutions which, to date, have not been met by the Israeli State. BDS is a non-violent struggle whose divestment strategy and economic, academic and cultural boycott of companies and institutions linked to the Israeli occupation have produced enough pressure to make Israel change its foreign policy introducing a whole new image abroad. The purpose of this research is to analyze the power of attraction or Soft Power of the BDS and its ability to push the Israeli State towards the reconfiguration of its political propaganda or "hasbara" which constitutes the core of its public diplomacy.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the embodiment of the sexed body and the struggle of fitting into the narrow frames of what a woman is supposed to behave and look like in Japanese cinema. Using the medium of film, I, therefore, seek to produce knowledge regarding the internalized gaze of the oppressor, and self-objectification, caused by the capitalist heteropatriarchy. Thus, I am drawing from cyborg feminism, and the second wave of sexual difference theory’s concept of becoming, expanded upon by the Italian-Australian philosopher Rosi Braidotti. I further use the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of masculine domination and the American philosopher Gayle Rubin’s charmed circle, in creating a theoretical framework, and using the methods of cultural and feminist film analysis to contextualize the films and locate the subjectification of the women. The movies that I will be analyzing are the Japanese director and poet Sion Sono’s Antiporno (アンチポルノ, 2016) and the Japanese director and photographer Mika Ninagawa’s Helter Skelter (ヘルタースケルター, 2012), which both center around two women and their struggle in becoming-cyborg, in relation to power, trauma, sexuality, technology, and beauty ideals in ‘modernized’ Japan. In that sense, I will study the phenomenon of operating outside the lines of social norms of femininity and desire.

Abstract:
Small businesses are regarded as economic growth engines with the potential to address the unemployment crisis in South Africa. The government has limited capacity to employ the majority of the unskilled and semi-skilled who are unemployed. Agencies and private organisations offering business development services (BDS) are required to assist small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) help government to address unemployment. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are recognised for the crucial role they play in activating and supporting economic growth. While much attention and hope has been placed on SMEs to provide the much-needed jobs, they are faced with enormous challenges and continue to fail. These challenges make it impractical for SMEs to realise their full potential and deliver to the government's and society's expectations. It is documented that SMEs face unique problems, which negatively affect their prospects and as a result, weaken their capacity to contribute to sustainable economic growth. Government and other private sector stakeholders have availed various types of business support in South Africa both as financial and non-financial support to assist SMEs overcome these problems. There has also been an emergence of business development service providers (BDSPs) that seek to extend support to SMEs, to ensure their sustainability, improve production techniques, market access and increase competitiveness but this has not yielded the desired results. Business development services refer to services that improve the performance of the enterprise, its access to markets, and its ability to compete. This study sought to explore the nature of BDS offered to SMMEs with a view to help them remain sustainable. Further, the study explored the challenges faced by BDSP. The study used an inductive qualitative research approach and employed semi-structured interviews to collect data. The population of the study consisted of SME business development service providers in South Africa, with an eventual study sample size comprised of ten providers. The findings indicate that there is a range of services offered to SMEs, with training and technical assistance and market access being the focus areas. While providers offer these services to SMEs, they themselves experience various challenges such as internal challenges which include funding and resources; expertise and skills levels of providers; and design of services. In addition, there are external challenges such as payment inability of SMMEs; low market awareness; commitment to and from SMMEs; perceived value of BDS; finding the right clients; and the business operating environment, which hinder their service provision. iii The study concludes by providing recommendations on approaches that BDS providers can adopt to offer solutions to some of the identified challenges. These approaches include: developing sector-specific approaches in delivering business development service; attracting enterprise and supplier development funds as a possible strategy to solve the lack of resources in this sector; alignment of the Broad-Based Black Economic legislative framework to business development services strategies; introduction of professional standards and guidelines in the business development services sector and implementation of an impact assessment matrix.
