Syed, Amir. "Rethinking the Ben Ali diary : multiple contexts and Muslim slaves." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/14720.

Abstract:
This paper explores the reasons why Bilali Mohammed, a Muslim slave who lived on Sapelo Island produced his Arabic document, known as the Ben Mi diary. Although several scholars have studied the document, they have remained silent on why Bilali was literate and why he produced this work. Since the Ben Au diary deals with Islamic ritual, this paper argues that in order to understand the text it must be intimately connected to Bilali’s life in West Africa, and, more specifically, to the spread of religious school during a period of Islamic revival in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. One of the central concerns of this paper is to raise questions about Muslim slave identity, resistance and literacy. It seeks to situate the discussion about the Ben Ali diary in the larger context of African American and American history. While the paper explores the literature on Muslim slaves, it also explores why the historical narratives that scholars produce about America’s past silence Islam. Finally, it investigates issues around power and narrativity, and suggests that Islam has been present in the New World since the onset of European colonialism. Consequently, it argues that present-day discourse about the foreignness and “dangers” of Islam in the West, make little sense, and are only legitimized by a complete disregard of this Muslim past.

Abstract:
Nineteenth-century British authors, in particular, Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, and Jane Austen, often turned to orphaned children as a means to drive the plot of their novels. While struggles such as displacement were often accurately depicted, the abovementioned authors and their contemporaries often glossed over or completely disregarded the trauma and psychological implications felt by these orphans. As psychology gained prominence as a discipline through the works of Sigmund Freud and others, modern British literature saw a shift in its consideration of orphans and, additionally, emotionally absent mothers. This thesis will examine three modern British novels; Ian McEwan’s Atonement, Kate Atkinson’s Behind the Scenes at the Museum, and Graham Swift’s Waterland with respect to their exploration of the psychological and possible traumatic impact of their protagonists lives in a variety of disrupted family dynamics.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to examine how religion legitimates outrages and it what ways we can regard religion as politics. The study uses the theory that Eickelman and Piscatori present in their book Muslim politics. They use the term ‘Muslim politics’ to describe the relation between Islam and politics. Eickelman and Piscatori divide Muslim politics in five elements that the essay uses to structure the analysis. By studying IS´s own published documents, two issues of the newspaper Dabiq Magazine, from a discourse analytical approach, this essay aims to consolidate the discourse behind the texts and find how the Muslim politics of IS is constructed. IS is an organization that has proclaimed a caliphate that includes Iraq and Syria. IS claims that the core of Islam has been lost and it needs to be rediscovered to avoid the punishment from Allah. IS claim to be the trustees of the will of Allah on earth and call on people to rally behind their interpretation of “true Islam”. The vision of IS is to re-establish a caliphate which is part of the ongoing objectification process.

Abstract:
The study of the image of the Maghrebi woman in three novels of Ben Jelloun reveals three very different kinds of childhood, adolescence and adult lives. There is a progressive emancipation between the portraits, which is partly due to the differences in time and setting, but also to the feminist intentions of the author.

Philippe, Julie.

Abstract:
Louis Delaporte is an underrated character in the history of the study of Khmer art in France. Between his first travel to the Khmer ruins, in 1873, and his resignation from the Musée indochinois du Trocadéro, in 1924, he held, however, a central position in the archeology of Southeast Asia. This thesis provides a first insight into the work undertaken by Delaporte to make Khmer art renowned, and provide a collection of art works meant to be the basis of its study. Unpublished sources (family letters, working papers kept by the Delaporte family and the musée Guimet) help relate Louis Delaporte’s career, from his first visit to Angkor, in 1866, to the development of the Musée indochinois du Trocadéro, between 1884 and 1924. If the focus of Delaporte’s work on Khmer art is born of fortuitous circumstances (his first travel to the Khmer ruins was designed to be the inital step of a broader exploration trip to Tonkin), he however developed a conscious strategy to ensure the works of art he brought back became prominent in French scientific circles. Thanks to the creation of a vast network, in the administration as well as in scientific circles, Louis Delaporte became, in the 1880s, a key character in the study of Khmer monuments. Due to his lack of knowledge, however, Delaporte never succeded in becoming the spearhead of Khmer archeology, and focused instead more on the development of a collection designed to become, in France, essential to whoever had an interest in Khmer archeology

Abstract:
This work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.

In the past, in the process of promoting cultural and creative products, the most difficult is: How to link cultural creativity with various tourism industry activities? The most important spirit of combining cultural and creative commodities with the tourism industry is that “cultural creativity is the value-added factor or even the core factor of the tourism industry”. Through cultural creativity, it is matched with the direction of tourism development policies of relevant government departments, combined with local cultural tourism, and the overall community construction. The promotion has become a niche for marketing the local tourism industry, strengthening the local visibility and the identity of local residents, gaining more domestic and foreign tourists, and bringing huge economic benefits to the local tourism industry. The focus of many museums today has gradually shifted from the management of “materials” to the services of “people”. That is, in addition to the preservation, research and display functions of traditional collectibles, museums are increasingly focusing on the needs of the general public, such as tourism and leisure services and learning and entertainment education. The Bear Museum combines the rich resources and energy of the tourism and leisure industry with cultural and creative products. It also focuses on the development and operation of many tourism museums. Located in Kansai Town, Hsinchu County, the Bear Museum is the largest collection of teddy bears in Asia and the most abundant collections. It not only has abundant resources and potential for development, but also has its own model of business planning and management. With the trend of globalization, humanity has entered the 21st century. Knowledge has become the greatest asset of mankind, and the knowledge economy has become the most important factor in determining the outcome of this era. Therefore, knowledge is power and products must meet the needs of customers. Innovation and breakthrough have become the focus of management. In simple terms, it is to provide the value of good interaction and special emotional connection between cultural and creative products and tourists. By diverse functions of the computer’s digital technique and global connection of the internet, various types of the information contents can be transmitted to each corner of the world through digital establishment. The museum will constantly digitalize its collections in addition to the entity exhibition. In Taiwan, we spare no efforts to digitalize the collection of artifacts through “Digital Museum Project” and “Digital Collection of National High-tech Project” held by the National Science Council, Taiwan, R. O. C., combining the multi-media technology, visual design, and digital document index, and using these technologies to share resources with the world through internet. This study is taking the theme website of “Dian Ben” (a block-printed edition carved at Wuyin Palace, Chin Dynasty) as an example to analyze the website’s designing process of digital collection and the practicability of interface project, so as to explore its pragmatism. The research findings show that the theme website of Dian Ben can be inclusiveof human-based design to beautify our eyesight and make seven features prominent:1). Designs are based upon the users. 2). Simple and accordant graphic interface. 3).Clear and recognizable interface design. 4). Data are definite and distinct. 5). Clear structure layers. 6). Use the familiar and understandable language and words. 7). The auxiliary description is convenient. To strive for perfection, the museum has to make a strategic advance, which is 1). Necessary to satisfy the demand from different ages and education in the content depth. 2). Essential to balance the academic research and children’s educational learning. 3). Required to look after both “Quality” and “Quantity” to develop cultural, studied, and educational functions of the collection resource.

On account of the rapid changes for modern times in the last decade, people has been gradually forgotten the importance of NPM and the benefit it can bring to us. How to reinvigorate itself and make a renaissance of Chinese culture for the citizen has become an urgent issue for the NPM. Therefore, this study aims to comprehend how consumers generate different product attitudes through different communication methods and provide more authentic insight into the brand management and revitalization of the NPM by two major topics, which are brand resistance and brand aging. We apply both the persuasion resistance effect, which has been widely discussed in the field of psychology and the market orientation strategy, brand-oriented strategy in integrated marketing communication., We divided the study into two experimental designs, the first one is the manipulation of 2 (the spokesperson type: Yongzheng vs. Genghis Khan) x 2 (endorsement strategy: explicit vs. hint) for verifying that the young consumers do not tend to resist to the NPM. In the second experiment, we take the 2 (product type :market-oriented creative cup set, brand-oriented boutique replica) x 2 (advertising strategy :market-oriented young slogan, brand-oriented standard slogan) experimental design to examine the research hypothesis. We confirm that the combination of the market-oriented strategy advertisement and market-oriented product is significantly better than the market-oriented advertisement combine with brand-oriented products, the fitness effect may improve young consumers’ attitude toward NPM. And accordingly, we raise the relevant suggestion to the NPM.

Sahaduth, Ummay Parveen. Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/4894.

Full text
Abstract:
If we cannot deny the fact that the realm of incarceration holds an important place in the texts of Tahar Ben Jelloun, we also have to acknowledge the endeavours of the characters to find liberation in some way or another. Therefore, above all else, liberation constitutes the object of our study. We have chosen five texts of the Moroccan author: Moha le fou Moha le sage (1978), L’enfant de sable (1985), La nuit sacrée (1987), Cette aveuglante absence de lumière (2001) and Amours sorcières (2003). After a quick glance at the different forms of incarceration, starting from the most tangible and moving to the most abstract ones, we study the most common paradigms to which the Moroccan turns to in order to free himself from the shackles that imprison him and we study simultaneously their shortcomings. Hence, we call into question the materialistic model that fails in liberating the individual on account of its excesses. Then, we study the psychological model laying emphasis on its limitations in that it comprises a vertical downward movement while no liberation is possible without an upward movement. Quite specific of the Moroccan society is the modern Islamic praxis that, in lieu of freeing the individual, only stifles him more. Afterwards, we raise questions concerning sorcery and dangers that it represents. Far from being a liberating agent, it constitutes a trap. Ultimately we come to the only key capable of bringing internal liberation to the Moroccan: metaphysics and, in the arabo-islamic context, it is Islamic esotericism or Sufism. This thesis requires a most scientific approach as demands the very nature of our problematic. We have thus chosen a metaphysical approach that best suits our study.

Bogdan, Sofiya. "Influence of beta and theta binaural beat stimulation on episodic memory: an EEG study." Master's thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/49362.

Full text
Abstract:
Tese de mestrado integrado, Engenharia Biomédica e Biofísica (Sinais e Imagens Médicas) Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2021
Binaural beats (BBs) are auditory illusions created by the brain when two coherent sounds with slightly different frequencies are presented to both ears dichotically. For example, if the subject is presented a 256 Hz tone to the right ear and a 250 Hz to the left ear, the beat in this phenomenon is referred to as a 6 Hz theta binaural beat. Conversely, a mix of two sinusoids presented to the same ear is called acoustic beat (AB), resulting in a periodic amplitude fluctuation. Although BBs were shown to have positive effects on cognition, there are no sufficient studies on BBs and episodic memory. Furthermore, there is no agreement to explain the brain mechanism underlying the perception of BBs. The primary goal of this study is to investigate the influence of BBs on episodic memory and the effects of BB stimulation on brain rhythms, more concretely to examine whether they can change the power of specific EEG frequencies, comparatively to ABs. The secondary objective focuses on an exploratory study to measure cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) applying Muse, a consumer-grade EEG device used in this study, in order to assess its potential and the corresponding data quality. To meet the goals, two separate experiments were designed: a classic CAEP paradigm, with a total of 5 participants (3 male, 2 female; aged 22-25 years old); and an experiment with 32 subjects (19 male, 13 female; aged 20-28 years old), divided into two groups (depending on type of stimulation performed: 20 Hz beta or 6 Hz theta beats), each one with two stimuli conditions (BB or AB), received 15 minutes before the episodic memory task, during memory encoding phase and during the free recall test, across 2 sessions with an interval of 1 week. To quantify the power of brain oscillations during AB and BB stimulation, time-frequency analysis was performed using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Relative Wavelet Energy (RWE). Regarding CAEP paradigm, N1-P2 complex was detected in temporal regions with acceptable signal-to-noise ratio. Parametric and non-parametric paired t-tests showed several significant changes in RWE values within each group at different time points, frequency bands and channels during both sessions, between BB and AB conditions. Moreover, entrainment of brain activity with the frequency of the beat was detected within theta BB stimulation. Regarding the effects of BB stimulation on episodic memory performance, t-tests revealed significant differences in the memory scores between AB and BB conditions during the first session (t=−2.48, p=0.0133) and second session (t=−2.67, p=0.00914) in theta group, with higher scores observed after BB stimulation. In beta group, significant differences in the scores were observed between AB and BB conditions during first session (t=−2.40, p=0.0154), with higher scores registered in BB condition. Inter-group analysis demonstrated that beta group outperformed theta group in both AB (t=3.37, p=0.00244) and BB (t=3.58, p=0.00143) conditions during the second session. This study validates the use of Muse for neuroscientific research, demonstrating that is possible to rely on consumer-grade low-cost EEG systems. Furthermore, it demonstrates that 20 Hz beta and 6 Hz theta BBs have a positive influence on episodic memory performance. Based on findings of positive effects of BBs on cognition, these results were expected. Entrainment was observed during theta BB stimulation. In addition, it is suggested that BBs have a modulatory effect on brain frequencies, with involvement of dynamical processes.
