Abstract:
Locating wolf (Canis lupus) homesites is valuable for understanding the foraging behavior, population dynamics, and reproductive ecology of wolves during summer. During this period wolf pack members (adults and pups) readily respond to simulated wolf howls (i.e., howl surveys), which allows researchers to estimate the location of the homesite via triangulation. Confirming the actual locations of homesites via ground truthing is labor intensive because of the error surrounding estimated locations. Our objectives were (1) to quantify observer error during howl surveys and compare amongst experie

Following design principles are important for helmet-mounted targeting systems. Two scanners on base of the polygonal reflector-type prisms forming the fanned field of view are fastened to head-up display. Three LEDs installed on pilot helmet form a plane, the normal of which is collinear to helmet indi-cator viewing line. Angles of LED bearings are measured with triangulation method and angular position of viewing line is calculat-ed. Two options for organization of scanning process are analyzed in the paper. In the first variant, one prism rotates in clockwise and the other in counterclockwi

Abstract The overwintering population of eastern North American monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) has declined significantly. Loss of milkweed (Asclepias sp.), the monarch’s obligate host plant in the Midwest United States, is considered to be a major cause of the decline. Restoring breeding habitat is an actionable step towards population recovery. Monarch butterflies are highly vagile; therefore, the spatial arrangement of milkweed in the landscape influences movement patterns, habitat utilization, and reproductive output. Triangulation is commonly used for source localization and most triangulation applications are based on intersection of the bearing direction to locate a source on a two-dimensional plane. In this paper, two new mathematical models (a basic model and an improved one) that expands the traditional triangulation concept to three-dimensional space are developed to locate multiple incoherent sound sources. The basic model uses four microphones and concentrates on solving a set of three quadratic equations simultaneously. The improved model requires more than four microphones and uses the solution f

Abstract With two fixed target locations, the Sonin electronic measuring device enables stem mapping of forest plots and transects to be done efficiently by one person, or greatly accelerates team work. There is no cumulative mapping error within individual plots. Measurements are much faster than tape measuring and more accurate than bearing/range methods, and the equipment costs are very low. The procedures for data verification, conversion to Cartesian coordinates, and for standarization of interplot coordinates are presented. South. J. Appl. For. 18(3):133-136.

This article presents the expressions which allow evaluating the potential accuracy of radio source location by the method of «imaginary base» when using the linear model of changing the bearing on it. The concept of the method of «imaginary base» is to be used in solving the triangulation problem not only of measuring bearing, but also their extrapolated values at a certain time interval. Potential characteristics is determined by accuracy, dynamic and geometrical factors, bearing measurement and extrapolation times. The article shows that when using a linear model, there are limitations both

This thesis investigates the problem of robot navigation using only landmark bearings. The proposed system allows a robot to move to a ground target location specified by the sensor values observed at this ground target posi- tion. The control actions are computed based on the difference between the current landmark bearings and the target landmark bearings. No Cartesian coordinates with respect to the ground are computed by the control system. The robot navigates using solely information from the bearing sensor space. Most existing robot navigation systems require a ground frame (2D Cartesian

The key to autonomous mobile-robot navigation is effective path planning and accurate self-localisation. The lack of self-localisation or inaccurate self-localisation makes any nonholonomic autonomous mobile robot blind in a navigation environment and will deter the robot’s ability to complete path following. In the last several years, many different systems have been considered for self-localisation, from using visual odometry to using a satellite triangulation method, better known as a global position system or GPS. All of these have benefits and detriments, the solution proposed here endeav
