Abstract:
Medieval literature abounds in stories about animals, of which there are two main, easily distinguished, varieties: animal fables and beast epic.1 Animal fables claim Aesop as their source. They are small narratives in which animals act and speak, with even smaller morals tacked on at the end of the little stories. They involve many animals (e.g., mice, lambs, cocks, foxes, birds, wolves, lions, and frogs). Such stories were used to teach schoolboys both Latin and some commonsense morality into the bargain (e.g., do not overeat; do not overreach; save up for the hard times; justice can be roug

Abstract:
This chapter consider the emergence of novelistic texts from the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries in light of the earlier efflorescence of prose fiction from classical antiquity. It argues that the links between the two are genetic as well as morphological. The ultimate point of origin for romance and novel is the Odyssey, a verse epic which amplifies the martial themes of the Iliad to include voyages, shipwrecks, fabulous and erotic encounters, and domestic strife and resolution. Setting aside beast fables of the Aesopic kind, this chapter identifies four distinct, if interfluent, strea

Abstract:
How did the camel get his hump? Why won't cats do as they are told? Who invented reading and writing? How did an inquisitive little elephant change the lives of elephants everywhere. Kipling's imagined answers to such questions draw on the beast fables he heard as a child in India, as well as on folk traditions he later collected all over the world. He plays games with language, exploring the relationships between thought, speech, and written word. He also celebrates his own joy in fatherhood. The tales were told to his own and his friends’ children over many years before he wrote them down, a
