Sea ice drift and associated forcing mechanisms within the Beaufort Sea are examined within the context of a mechanically weakening Arctic ice pack. Extensive in situ observations of ice drift, ice mass balance and surface winds are supplemented by remotely sensed and modeled data to analyse the forcing of sea ice motion. First we analyse the anomalous export of 13.4 x 103 km2 of sea ice through the Bering Strait during winter 2011-2012. During the fourth International Polar Year, an interdisciplinary study was conducted to examine the couplings between sea ice, ocean, atmosphere, and ecosystem in the southeastern Beaufort Sea. This thesis examines components of the system that control the air–sea exchange of carbon dioxide. Using eddy covariance measurements, we found enhanced CO2 exchange associated with new ice formation in winter flaw leads. Illitization in the Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin is characterized by random, a mixture of random and ordered, R1-ordered, and R $>$ 1-ordered illite/smectite (I/S). Proportions of I-layers increase with depth, while the dominant I/S type changes in that order. Illitization in offshore wells is generally more advanced than onshore because of higher geothermal gradients. The seismic stratigraphy and sedimentary architecture of the Canadian Beaufort Sea margin are investigated using a comprehensive grid of two-dimensional seismic reflection data. Three cross-shelf troughs, representing locations of former ice streams draining a 1000 km-long section of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS), are examined: the Mackenzie, Amundsen Gulf and M'Clure Strait systems. The seasonal pattern of ice motion in response to wind forcing and potential consequences to upwelling on the Mackenzie Shelf are considered using satellite-derived ice motion data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center and the NCEP 10 m wind data. In 1969 a German company, Badishe Anilin und Sodafabrik (BASF), sited a petrochemical facility in Beaufort County, South Carolina. Protests broke out, largely led by Charles E. Fraser, a man well-known for developing Beaufort County's Hilton Head Island into a famous Southern resort community. The first comprehensive analysis of surface waters in the Labrador Sea for 236U was completed via Accelerator Mass Spectrometry. Through the analysis of 236U the method for AMS measurement was fine-tuned to allow for more precise results. Surface samples for the anthropogenic isotopes 137Cs and 129I were also collected along with two depth profiles of 129I. Samples were also collected in the Beaufort Sea and analyzed for the aforementioned isotopes.
