Abstract:

Abstract:
Fairy tales as a form of social acculturation can subvert and/or perpetuate potentially harmful social norms. In this essay, Chris Anne Wolfe’s lesbian romance novel Bitter Thorns (1994) and the film Shrek (2001) are analysed as adaptations of the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, with a focus on the extent to which they challenge and/or reinforce three fairy tale norms: women as tradeable objects, heteronormativity and idealised beauty. Both these texts can be seen as subversive, Bitter Thorns in how it challenges heteronormativity and Shrek in how it challenges the norm of idealised beauty. This subversion, however, is limited, as both texts do more to perpetuate fairy tale norms than to challenge them. They both reinforce the idea of women as objects for trade, Bitter Thorns perpetuates the norm of idealised beauty, and Shrek advocates heteronormative relationships and the dominance of heterosexual masculinity.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how science fiction and fantasy retellings of the fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" bring visionary insights to the fairy tale. Stories such as Tanith Lee's science fiction novella "Beauty" and Mercedes Lackey's fantasy novel The Fire Rose constitute living and developing incarnations of "Beauty and the Beast." To better explore the visionary leaps made by these stories, they are placed in contrast with one of the original recordings of the story by Madame Marie Le Prince de Beaumont and the 1991 Disney film version, Beauty and the Beast.

Abstract:

From Madame Le Prince de Beaumont to Francesca Lia Block, Walter Crane to Mercer Mayer, and Jacques Cocteau to the Walt Disney Company, authors, artists, and filmmakers are drawn to recreating "Beauty and the Beast." As a result "Beauty and the Beast" is reformatted to reflect shifts in cultural assumptions, particularly ideas of gender roles, sexuality, and identifying the Other. Therefore, by examining the recurring motifs of the feminine ideal, the Beast as Other, and the transposition of the tale to an Orientalized setting, within adaptations of "Beauty and the Beast," it becomes clear that the tale is a multi-voiced tool with which authors and illustrators use to simultaneously support and subvert the hegemonic status quo. Examining the significance of "Beauty and the Beast" offers insight as to the power that revised texts have over their precursor texts and their producing culture. By understanding the importance of "Beauty and the Beast" as a symbiotic text, one can understand how it functions within its cultural context. Such an examination reveals that not only does culture dictate the tales we tell, but also that the tales we tell dictate our cultural identity. Ultimately this project concludes that this tale works within Western culture to convey shifting cultural messages about Otherness, women, and Islam.

Abstract:
Feminist scholarship concerning fairy tales is too limited. While relationships between male and female characters have been explored extensively, this thesis focuses on masculinity as it is performed in interactions between male characters. It aims to bring more justices to traditional fairy tale gender binaries. Using Tony Coles’ Theory of Multiple Dominant Masculinities, this project examines four 17th-19th century animal/monster groom tales, studying male characters in order to understand how masculinity is constructed in selected tales and operates as a dynamic relationship between male characters. While the quest for dominance is often linked to violence, by employing the marvelous as an agent of change, these tales offer utopian perspectives in which shifts in male power occur without violence. The system of masculinity can be unfavorable and restrictive, presenting male characters with limited role options, but in fairy tales this system is also flexible, offering the possibility of change.

This essay examines Angela Carter’s feminist rewritings of classical fairy tales. By examining the original fairy tales and comparing them to what Angela Carter published I aim to highlight a feminism that is subtle and non-binary. In the analysis I draw on ideas presented by Hélène Cixous as well as Simone de Beauvoir. Furthermore, a pedagogical reflection is included to show ways in which these stories could be incorporated in the upper- secondary school.

Abstract:
Mild psychological effects, such as sleep-deprivation, on an oppressed and tortured human being can be characterized as “normal”. However, Shame by Salman Rushdie uses magical realist style to describe the psychological effects of shame in a patriarchal society which is based on capitalistic class values. This essay will focus on the Marxist feminist reading of the novel with a psychoanalytical perspective which is going to help analyse the effects of the oppressed female characters, Bilquis Hyder, Sufiya Zinobia and Rani Harappa.  The essay focuses on different incidents in the lives of these characters with the help of critics such as Aijaz Ahmad and Timothy Brennan. Both have written critically about Rushdie. This essay will discuss the different aspects of Marxism, feminism as well as psychoanalysis and connecting them to the novel, which would give the answers as to what shame can do to a person’s psyche. The Beauty and the Beast fairy-tale gets a different perception in this story, as Sufiya Zinobia is both the characters in one.

Abstract:
The following essay investigates the artificial magic environment in two fairy tales with similar tropes and themes, to find out if the magic is necessary for the growth of the characters. The ecocritical movement constitutes the essay’s theoretical background in order to shine a light on the physical nature that has been slightly neglected when it comes to discerning the inner nature of the heroines in these stories. By employing theoretical concepts from animal studies, the essay also examines the relationship between animals and humans for the purpose of including the portrayal of animals in an expanded view on nature. The major conclusion of the essay is that magic can both help and hinder the protagonist’s journey to maturity. Furthermore, these fairy tales portray different methods of downgrading animals, but they also challenge an anthropocentric view of the world.

Viewing this phenomenon through the lens of women in media imagery, this work sought to investigate this phenomenon further.

Abstract:
Approaching the world of the fairy tale as an adult, one soon realizes that things are not what they once seemed during story time in bed. Something that once appeared so innocent and simple can become rather complex when digging into its origin. A kiss, for example, can mean something else entirely. I can clearly remember my sister, who is ten years older than I am, telling me that the fairy tales I was told had a mysterious hidden meaning I could not understand. I was probably 9 or 10 when she told me that the story of Sleeping Beauty, which I used to love so much in Disney’s rendering, was nothing more than the story of an adolescent girl, with all the necessary steps needed to become a woman, the bleeding of menstruation and the sexual awakening - even though she did not really put it in these terms. This shocking news troubled me for a while, so much so that I haven’t watched that movie since. But in reality it was not fear that my sister had implanted in me: it was curiosity, the feeling that I was missing something terribly important behind the words and images. But it was not until last year during my semester abroad in Germany, where I had the chance to take a very interesting English literature seminar, that I fully understood what I had been looking for all these years. Thanks to what I learned from the work of Bruno Bettelheim, Jack Zipes, Vladimir Propp, and many other authors that wrote extensively about the subject, I feel I finally have the right tools to really get to know this fairy tale. But what I also know now is that the message behind fairy tales is not to be searched for behind only one version: on the contrary, since they come from oral traditions and their form was slowly shaped by centuries of recountals and retellings, the more one digs, the more complete the understanding of the tale will be. I will therefore look for Sleeping Beauty’s hidden meaning by looking for the reason why it did stick so consistently throughout time. To achieve this goal, I have organized my analysis in three chapters: in the first chapter, I will analyze the first known literary version of the tale, the French Perceforest, and then compare it with the following Italian version, Basile’s Sun, Moon, and Talia; in the second chapter, I will focus on the most famous and by now classical literary versions of Sleeping Beauty, La Belle Au Bois Dormant, written by the Frenchman, Perrault, and the German Dornröschen, recorded by the Brothers Grimm’s; finally, in the last chapter, I will analyze Almodovar’s film Talk to Her as a modern rewriting of this tale, which after a closer look, appears closely related to the earliest version of the story, Perceforest.

Garcia, Carollaine. "Beauty and the Beast: The Attractiveness Bias in an Online Peer Mentoring Program." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5217.

Full text
Abstract:
The bias against attractiveness is fairly implicit and furthermore, powerfully impacts people's subsequent impressions of and behaviors toward others (Cash, Gillen, & Burns, 1977; Dion et al., 1972). Pallet, Link and Lee (2010) examined the effect of various facial spatial configurations on attractiveness and found that raters rated faces as most attractive when the eye-to-mouth ratio approximated 36% of the face length (the "golden ratio"), which coincides with the measurements of an average and thus more attractive face. The present study examined the extent to which the distance of these objectively measured facial features affected mentors' perceptions of their proteges, the subsequent mentoring given to them, and the proteges' own behavior (e.g. seek feedback, request specific information). The gender composition of the mentor-proteges dyad was expected to moderate these relationships. I also examined whether, given the expected effects of facial measurements, withholding access to visual cues would affect mentor perceptions and behavior. Participants were 118 mentor/proteges dyads from a large Southeastern university who volunteered to participate in a formal online peer mentoring program. After seeing their proteges' profiles (and for those in the experimental condition, a picture), mentors chatted with their proteges once a week for 30 minutes for a total of 4 weeks. Results indicated that proteges with facial features moderately distant from the golden ratio were perceived as more similar by mentors in same-gender dyads and received greater mentoring than did proteges closest and farthest from the golden ratio. In opposite-gender dyads, however, mentors reported greater similarity toward those that were farthest from the golden ratio but provided the greatest mentoring to those closest to the golden ratio. The relationship between facial measurements and protege proactivity was moderated by whether or not their mentor had access to their picture. While proteges closest to the ratio were more proactive in the picture condition, those that were farthest from it were more proactive in the non-picture condition. Proactivity was as expected associated with greater levels of mentoring, which was ultimately related to a more fulfilled and beneficial relationship for proteges (i.e. less stress, greater self-efficacy and satisfaction). The results of this study indicate that facial measurements are associated with both differences in mentor and in protege behavior and that the specific nature of these relationships differs as a function of gender composition. Implications for practice and theory will be discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the implications of selfhood in three retellings of the "Beauty and the Beast" story-Robin McKinley's Beauty and Rose Daughter, and Donna Jo Napoli's Beast-analyzing those factors that affected each protagonist's understanding of the self, how these challenged or aided them in their journey towards self-actualization, and how a sense of personal gratification represented the true reward at the end of the ordeal. My analysis was informed by the Jungian concept of the Self as the goal of individuation, and Joseph Campbell's model of the hero's journey. As such, I found that these retellings illustrated the hero's journey as a representation of the process of individuation and the benefits to be gained by reaching this state of wholeness.

Abstract:
Washington State’s Gray Wolf Conservation and Management Plan has struggled to respond to conflicts between humans and wolves. This has led to an increase in cultural stratification between pro-wolf community members and anti-wolf community members. The Plan dedicates a disproportionate amount of time to biological science and does little to account for variance in human behavior. In this paper, I provide a series of personal stories that illustrate how human-animal relationships are developed and preserved through experience and why ingrained conceptualizations are difficult to transcend. I then draw on existing research to explore conceptualizations of wolves in the human imagination throughout history, the dominant wolf narratives that emerge from these conceptualizations, and use the psychological theories of Social Dominance and Right Wing Authoritarianism to understand the differences in behavior between pro-wolf and anti-wolf communities. Anti-wolf community members were higher in images related to SDO and RWA than their pro-wolf counterparts.

Bracegirdle, Christina. "Beauty and the beast : clients' experience of counselling within a narrative framework, considering concepts of containment and freedom." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/2550.

Full text
Abstract:
The experience of opposition between what could be contained in my internal world, and what I wanted freedom from containing while a client in counselling led to the conception of this research. Containment and freedom seemed to form a polarity (Jung 1961; 1969) in that each notion became as necessary as the other. Clients who became participants were in counselling with other counsellors and were asked to keep journals on their thoughts and feelings after counselling sessions and these formed the data for the study. My interest in poetry guided this process as the journals were created by short phrases forming each line and this seemed to influence the writing and analytic process. The journals produced by the participants encouraged the original heuristic (Moustakas 1990) design to surrender the richness that was hidden within it as it became a narrative inquiry. Containment, freedom and the possible polarity between them are investigated as constructs of emotional opposition experienced by the client. The construct and categories which emerge from the data suggest aspects of containment and freedom that demonstrate how emotional movement may occur within the participants through the opposition between containment and freedom. The data also seems to image established theory within the journal stories. A relationship between poetry and the counselling experience is drawn together within the research process as the unconscious and the use of metaphor seem to elicit the discovery of the self. My experiences of personal life events that impact upon the study are held alongside the project as such experiences and the research develop my voice which is relevant to the process and outcome of the work.

Abstract:
This essay examines gender normative and patriarchal elements of the popular fairy            tale Sleeping Beauty in order to expose how patriarchal ideals are upheld. The reason for this is that children may internalize the values taught in these stories, which may lead to them perpetuating patriarchal ideals and gender normative behavior. The popular version of this fairy tale, made by Disney, follows many of the typical patriarchal ideals with a strong male hero, a wicked female witch and a weak and submissive young female, close to nature. This is contrasted by a modern retelling by Cameron Dokey that is, in many ways, gender subversive and challenges the traditional gender roles and attributes. This essay finds that the version made by Disney is a product of its time, and portrays ideals from that period that could affect children of today into internalizing archaic patriarchal ideals. Dokey’s version is better adapted to the current socio-cultural environment and succeeds in aligning the story with modern values and provides a better option to teach children the actual values and gender roles of our society.

Abstract:
Dominant approaches in International Political Economy treat inflows of foreign direct investments (FDI) only as a material fact, a physical flow of capital. The analysis of the perceptions of inward FDI presented in this research, however, reveals that the meaning that policymakers and analysts attribute to FDI inflows goes far beyond that. What is more, the predominant interpretation of the meaning of FDI inflows has changed dramatically over time: While they were perceived primarily as a threat to national economic development from the 1950s to the 1980s, they came to be gradually re-interpreted as a sign of economic success in the 1990s. Focusing on these developments in the major OECD economies, this research aims to make sense of this stunning transformation in the social interpretation of inward FDI and to examine the implications of these ideational evolutions for policy outcomes. To do so, the research adopts a mixed methods research design, which combines quantitative approaches with the insights gained from qualitative historical analysis: After providing a nuanced theoretical discussion of the significance of economic narratives in international economic affairs and a broad overview of the key developments in FDI policies and relevant policy discourses in the six largest advanced economies during the post-war era, the research subjects the theoretical argument to two quantitative tests at large cross-national samples using data from public opinion surveys and general election results; finally, a qualitative comparison of relevant developments in the United Kingdom and France analyses the impact of these ideational changes on FDI policy-making processes in empirical depth.

Abstract:
Simple content analysis methods, such as the Bechdel test and measuring percentage of female talk time or characters, have seen a surge of attention from mainstream media and in social media the last couple of years. Underlying assumptions are generally shared with the gender role socialization model and consequently, an importance is stated, due to a high degree to which impressions from media shape in particular young children’s identification processes. For young girls, the Disney Princesses franchise (with Frozen included) stands out as the number one player commercially as well as in customer awareness. The vertical lineup of Disney princesses spans from the passive and domestic working Snow White in 1937 to independent and super-power wielding princess Elsa in 2013, which makes the line of films an optimal test subject in evaluating above-mentioned simple content analysis methods. As a control, a meta-study has been conducted on previous academic studies on the same range of films. The sampled research, within fields spanning from qualitative content analysis and semiotics to coded content analysis, all come to the same conclusions regarding the general changes over time in representations of female characters. The objective of this thesis is to answer whether or not there is a correlation between these changes and those indicated by the simple content analysis methods, i.e. whether or not the simple popular methods are in general coherence with the more intricate academic methods.

Abstract:
Large and growing collections of a wide variety of music are now available on demand to music listeners, necessitating novel ways of automatically structuring these collections using different dimensions of music. Rhythm is one of the basic music dimensions and its automatic analysis, which aims to extract musically meaningful rhythm related information from music, is a core task in Music Information Research (MIR). Musical rhythm, similar to most musical dimensions, is culture-specific and hence its analysis requires culture-aware approaches. Indian art music is one of the major music traditions of the world and has complexities in rhythm that have not been addressed by the current state of the art in MIR, motivating us to choose it as the primary music tradition for study. Our intent is to address unexplored rhythm analysis problems in Indian art music to push the boundaries of the current MIR approaches by making them culture-aware and generalizable to other music traditions. The thesis aims to build data-driven signal processing and machine learning approaches for automatic analysis, description and discovery of rhythmic structures and patterns in audio music collections of Indian art music. After identifying challenges and opportunities, we present several relevant research tasks that open up the field of automatic rhythm analysis of Indian art music. Data-driven approaches require well curated data corpora for research and efforts towards creating such corpora and datasets are documented in detail. We then focus on the topics of meter analysis and percussion pattern discovery in Indian art music. Meter analysis aims to align several hierarchical metrical events with an audio recording. Meter analysis tasks such as meter inference, meter tracking and informed meter tracking are formulated for Indian art music. Different Bayesian models that can explicitly incorporate higher level metrical structure information are evaluated for the tasks and novel extensions are proposed. The proposed methods overcome the limitations of existing approaches and their performance indicate the effectiveness of informed meter analysis. Percussion in Indian art music uses onomatopoeic oral mnemonic syllables for the transmission of repertoire and technique, providing a language for percussion. We use these percussion syllables to define, represent and discover percussion patterns in audio recordings of percussion solos. We approach the problem of percussion pattern discovery using hidden Markov model based automatic transcription followed by an approximate string search using a data derived percussion pattern library. Preliminary experiments on Beijing opera percussion patterns, and on both tabla and mridangam solo recordings in Indian art music demonstrate the utility of percussion syllables, identifying further challenges to building practical discovery systems. The technologies resulting from the research in the thesis are a part of the complete set of tools being developed within the CompMusic project for a better understanding and organization of Indian art music, aimed at providing an enriched experience with listening and discovery of music. The data and tools should also be relevant for data-driven musicological studies and other MIR tasks that can benefit from automatic rhythm analysis.

In recent years, the Walt Disney Company has been releasing live-action movies non-stop remade from their own animated films. Other film companies have also released live-action movies from fairy tales. Thus, the adaptation of fairy tales has become a trend. This study uses three contemporary "Beauty and the Beast" movies and the original "Beauty and the Beast" fairy tale in the18th century as the research text, to discuss in depth the evolving of fairy tales to movies, and the adaptation of the films to fairy tales. This study analyzes the four texts from the characters and the plots. Chapter III discusses the characters and plots of the fairy tale. Chapter VI provides characteristic analysis of the three films based on the archetypes proposed by Christopher Vogler and compares it with that in the fairy tale. Chapter V gives readers insight into the three films in regards to the plots, based on the ideas of the Hero’s Journey from Christopher Vogler, and makes a comparison to those in the fairy tale . Chapter VI combines the previously mentioned analyses and proposes the common theme of the four texts. The outcome of the analyses discovers that the characters in each movie correspond to the archetypes by Vogler. The plots among the four texts are similar to the Hero’s Journey of Vogler. We can observe a sense of improvement in terms of the roles of the heroines in these stories. The moral lessons are rendered by the story; nevertheless new concepts are to be seen with it through time.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this Project Work is to draw the attention of the Portuguese academic community, and desirably also of the publishing sector, to the need to preserve fairy tales that are part of the Western collective imagination in their "original" form, namely via translation. The continuous process of adapting them over time has led to greater or lesser departures from their earlier written versions, and these stories have often become popular in their adapted forms and not in their first literary formulation. This is precisely the case of the famous fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, chosen for the purpose of the present study. La Belle et la Bête, by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve (1695-1755), was published in 1740, followed in 1756 by a homonymous adaptation by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont (1711-1780) that would become much more popular and would relegate Villeneuve’s first version to obscurity. The film adaptations made by Walt Disney Pictures in 1991 and 2017, in turn, spread the story on a large scale, adapting it to new historical and ideological contexts — and consequently moving it away from Villeneuve’s initial narrative. This Project Work is divided into two parts. In the first, the fairy tale genre is contextualized and an analysis of the transformations suffered by Villeneuve’s story in Beaumont’s and the Disney industry’s adaptations is made. In the second, a translation (an indirect translation, using the English translation of J.R. Planché, dated from 1858, as the source text) of two carefully selected chapters of Villeneuve’s fairy tale, as yet never translated into European Portuguese, is presented, followed by a reflection on the main translation problems faced during the process. The purpose is to fill a gap in the Portuguese literary system and justify the interest in acquainting Portuguese readers with the first literary version of Beauty and the Beast, making them aware of the significant differences that separate it from its most relevant adaptations.

Edogawa Rampo (1894-1965)was a Japanese authou who palyed a major role of the Japanese mystery fiction. Edogawa Rampo is also the promoter of the Mystery Writers of Japan.Therefor it is very important to research Edogawa Rampo’s mystery fiction when we want to comprehend Janpanese mystery fiction. The Japanese mystery fictions what are wrote by Edogawa Rampo is sorted by Akimitsu Takagi from 3 phase. This thesis is consideration of the ”Strange Tale of Panorama Island” “Beast in the Shadows” and “The Demon of The Lonely Isle” what are of the 1st phase of the Edogawa Rampo’s mystery fiction(from 1923” The Two-Sen Copper Coin” until 1929”Musi” ) . In the 1st phase of the Edogawa Rampo’s mystery fiction we can find that a space is in our daily life but not noticed or an unusual space are often described. About the space is in our daily life but not noticed , for example , the garret , the internal part of the sofa , and a storehouse. And about the unusual space , for example , a lonely isle , a space is like a hollow ball which is made of mirror , or a maze that is under the ground. Those space is often described of the 1st phase of the Edogawa Rampo’s mystery fiction. And we can also discover those kind of space in the fiction has a great effect upon the content. Abstract:
Opera Breve is a chamber opera company that was initiated by three students during a seminar in operatic literature at the University of British Columbia. During the four years of its activities, the company has distinguished itself by producing one-act chamber operas in unconventional settings. Co-artistic director John Juliani has had a large influence on the company's presentational style, incorporating important aspects of his theatre aesthetic to the operatic art form. R. Murray Schafer's work Beauty and the Beast was chosen for the third main season, and represents the culmination of the company's artistic endeavours. The main focus of this dissertation is an analysis of Opera Breve's production of Beauty and the Beast. The opening chapter defines the genre of the one-act chamber opera, briefly traces its development to present day, and articulates why Opera Breve adopted the form as the mainstay of its repertoire. The second chapter describes the conception and artistic goals of the company. John Juliani's philosophy of free theatre and its application to Opera Breve's past productions are discussed. The third chapter presents Schafer's philosophy of Music Theatre as exemplified in his cycle, Patria. The influence of Jungian archetypes in the symbology of Beauty and the Beast, and its musical representation are presented. The fourth chapter focuses on Opera Breve's 2001 production, discussing performance issues that arise from the work. The synergy between Juliani and Schafer's philosophies, and the production's fulfillment of Opera Breve's artistic goals are summarized in the conclusion.

Abstract:
Although more than 2500 articles published since 1970 deal with facial attractiveness, few have addressed whether characteristics of the beholder might influence such judgments. The present study considers whether misattribution and/or distraction contribute to a hypothesized change in males' ratings of female facial attractiveness when state anxiety is increased. Results obtained were consistent with distraction theory but were also interpretable through an alternative misattribution explanation. Participant relationship status was also found to be a significant predictor of attractiveness ratings and suggested the possibility that relationship status might interact with state anxiety to uniquely influence males’ attractiveness ratings for female faces. Implications and applications of these findings are discussed for clinical, social, and developmental psychology and recommendations given for future research into this and related phenomena.

Gonçalves, Rita Sebastiana Vaz. "The beauty or the beast inside retail stores?: a market basket analysis of a cosmetic company." Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/21886.

Abstract:
Nowadays, companies have in storage a large quantity of customer data and do not take advantage of this. Given the state of the market, in order to stay competitive, retailers should know and adapt to the needs of their customers. One way to accomplish such task is to perform a Market Basket Analysis to the available customer data. A Market Basket Analysis examines transactional data to find which items are related to each other enabling retailers to create new marketing strategies such as store layout, product placement, pricing and promotions. In this study, a market basket analysis was performed to transactional data provided by a Portuguese cosmetics company with the purpose of finding which items are put in the same “basket” by their current customers. This analysis resulted in the generation of several association rules about customers with similar demographic variables such as, gender, age and geographical location. For example, this analysis allowed to discover the items that customers belonging to a certain gender and age group are likely to buy. For example, through this analysis it was possible to discover that women aged over 60 years old that buy the hair removal service {87880} will also buy the hair removal service {114325} with a confidence of 94%. It was also discovered that women aged between 35 and 44 years old that visit one particular store in the greater Lisbon area buy the makeup foundation 85945 and the cream 99282 will buy the cream 108741 with a likelihood of 89%. One other example of the association discovered is that customers that visit another store in the greater Lisbon area have a very high inclination to buy together the men’s’ perfume {73933}, the aftershave {84539} and the deodorant {105213}.

Abstract:
Young Germans do not see themselves represented in the Antifa Movement, some even avoid it in everyday conversations. In the present Dissertation I propose to discover why. Through fieldwork research with a local Antifa Group in Germany, I understood that this divergency is towards Antifa’s most extreme sub-groups, be it due to their ideological approach or to their tactics to pursue their political goals. One of the groups exemplified are the Revolutionäre Linke Mannheim and their communist heritage towards a classless society, the other are the anarchic Autonome and their view of violence being legitimate to pursue political goals. I argue that albeit being a group that is theoretically appealing to younger generations, young Germans do not want to associate themselves with extreme political positions and want above all peace and are concerned with the increase violence in their society. The Antifa Movement I had one-on-one contact with is aware that they need to single themselves out from these more radical fringes in order to achieve their goal of reaching the mainstream society. I conclude the Dissertation by covering several considerations that the Literature advises can be done in order to appease the current political division and in particular, the extreme-left scene in Germany.
