Abstract:
AbstractThis essay explores some of the dogmatic challenges involved in developing a distinctively evangelical account of the doctrine of theosis, that is, humanity’s participation in the life of God. After offering some preliminary clarifications regarding the terminology of theosis, the paper sketches in broad strokes how an account of theosis might take shape within the structures of evangelical theology. David Bebbington’s famous evangelical quadrilateral— biblicism, crucicentrism, conversionism, and activism—serves as the basic framework (Bebbington 1989: 1-19). It will be argued that evangelical theology can accommodate a version of theosis within this structure, but that evangelicals’ understanding of these categories may require some ‘flexing’ in order to make room for a more Christocentric and participatory conceptualization of redemption, one that culminates in the beatific vision of the redeemed when ‘God will be all in all’ (1 Cor 15:28). The final section of the paper points to a pair of important figures who may serve as resources for an evangelical retrieval of theosis.

Abstract:
This article was written as a preliminary opinion to explore the "public face" of evangelicalism as a movement in Indonesia. Furthermore, this article will discuss who are the evangelicals in Indonesia, the theological characteristics from the evangelicals, and the form of evangelical's participation in Indonesia. The writer will argue that the modification from Bebbington's Quadrilateral, Larsen's Pentagram, can be theological characteristics from the evangelicals in Indonesia. As a consequence, this article will propose two ways of movements from evangelicalism in Indonesia, which are the inward and outward movements. The inward movement is the spirit of the evangelical church to reform itself, while the outward flow is the eagerness of the evangelical church to reform the social condition. Thus, these are initial observations for shaping evangelicalism in Indonesia.

Abstract:
AbstractIt remains true that an objective overview of Christian environmentalism – both theologically and practically – would see the contribution of evangelical mission agencies as fairly peripheral (a notable exception being an organisation called A Rocha). However, this paper argues that in terms both of a biblical theology of "five acts" (creation, fall, Israel, Jesus, and the present and future age) and also of evangelical culture (characterised by the "Bebbington quadrilateral" of biblicism, crucicentrism, conversionism and activism) there are good reasons why evangelicalism should engage with environment, and growing evidence that it is beginning to do so. Some of the most significant thinkers and some of the largest mission agencies have begun asking key questions about God's mission towards the whole creation and ours. The next few years will be critical as to whether evangelicals accept the challenge to rethink and rework mission to take God's creation seriously, or whether they choose to remain in an other-worldly sub-culture.

Gill, John. "The Evangelicalism of Alexander Carson." Diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/3961.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the evangelicalism of Alexander Carson (ca. 1776- 1844) using David Bebbington's evangelical quadrilateral--biblicism, crucicentrism, conversionism, and activism--as a framework. Chapter 1 gives an introduction to the study and a biographical sketch of Carson's life and ministry. Chapter 2 examines Carson's view of Scripture in the areas of inspiration, Bible translation, and the transmission of Scripture. Carson's views on the inspiration of Scripture and the principles by which it was to be translated were given within the context of the theological controversies in which he was involved. Chapter 3 examines Carson's view of the atonement. It looks at his understanding of humanity's sin, divine justice and mercy, God's sovereignty, and the completed nature of the atonement. Chapter 4 is a study of Carson's understanding of how people are converted. The chapter discusses his views on the definition of saving faith, the relation between faith and works, the conversion experience, and the divine role in conversion. Chapter 5 looks at Carson's views on evangelism in four areas: the use of the Bible in evangelism, the importance of religious liberty to evangelize, the role of divine providence in evangelism, and the Christian's duty to evangelize. Although the four characteristics of evangelicalism set forth by Bebbington do not include other areas of theology important to Carson, such as his views on baptism and church order, the quadrilaterial does focus on what Carson believed to be central to Christianity, namely, the gospel. Therefore, considering Bebbington's quadrilateral to be a sound framework for understanding Carson's view of the gospel, the thesis of this study is that Carson's belief in the Bible as a verbally and completely inspired text was an infallible source for his understanding of the gospel as being centered upon the atonement, effective through justification by faith alone, and the motivation for evangelism.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 presents Part I of a field-theoretic model of religious strength, focusing on the most powerful social mechanisms and ecological factors that precipitated the rise of the New Calvinist movement. The author describes three aspects of the American cultural backdrop along with three discursive opportunities, which together facilitated the onset of contention in the American Evangelical field. The chapter maps the correspondence between Evangelical leaders’ positions in the field and their corresponding religious dispositions. Additional precipitating factors are identified. The chapter ends by empirically establishing the “rules of the game,” which are the elements of the Bebbington Quadrilateral (i.e., crucicentrism, biblicism, activism, and conversionism), to which is added the more all-encompassing field rule of “the Gospel,” broadly defined. These rules are understood as endogenous to the social system such that the battle over American Evangelicalism is a battle with and over these rules.
