Abstract:
This essay develops the metaphor of energy to address the meaning of God. It does so by drawing upon aspects of Buddhist thinking and certain findings in contemporary science. It approaches energy as the activity of inter-reling, pregnant with the possibility of emerging as spirit, in a manner that heals, especially becoming the highest quality within relatedness: that of care and love. Love as we understand it may not have been at the beginning; but it does emerge from the giving forth of the beginning; and it does emerge from the activity of interrelatedness that occurs in and as world. Such is the divine impulse that has given birth and empowers world. Those are the activities within which God, world, and humanity most express one another, most are synonnomous with one another.

Abstract:
The spotlight exposes my presence. I feel as if I have all of the power on stage. The words linger in my mind as though a dart has been thrown into my heart. I stop and think. How can such a loving girl go through the misfortunate events that Julia goes through for her unfaithful boyfriend? Hatred enters my heart and a small lump forms in my throat, despite the fact that I am in front of an audience performing the role of Julia from Shakespeare's The Two Gentlemen of Verona. I feel her pain and her anger. Part of me wants to run offstage because I no longer want to portray a heartbroken girl, but another part of me wants to stay and complete the play for my audience, and for Julia.

Abstract:
Two years ago, when I learned that even with a college degree and nine years of teaching experience I still needed another mathematics course to become “highly qualified,” I got really scared. What kind of course should I take? For what purpose? Although I am not an expert in mathematics, I knew that taking more courses like the ones I took in college would not help me in my teaching. Other teachers advised me to take one of the lowerlevel mathematics courses at the local community college. These were offered during the summer and were basically a review of eighth-grade prealgebra. This could be an easy way to achieve my goal of becoming “highly qualified.” But I did not see how a course like this would help me become a better teacher.

Abstract:
Medicine has always been regarded as one of the most significant disciplines, grounded in a humanistic approach, due to its ultimate exposure and connection with people as ‘patients’ and hence a holistic understanding of the patient as ‘human’ is fundamental. In our potentially dangerous times, the instrumental, technical and fragmented ways of seeing knowledge tend to permeate most disciplines, including medicine. This may result in individuals becoming alienated with the ‘self’ as potential doctors, with the discipline and with patients through the monologic discourse of academia or clinics. This article examines this (in)visible global issue in the specific context of Iran, where bilingual medical education adds another level of complexity in dialogic ‘seeing’ of self, knowledge and patients. Grounded in Bakhtin’s theory of dialogue and critical literacy approach to language and literacy, this article explores the affordances of a pedagogical intervention at an Iranian university. This offers diverse avenues for constructing a holistic medical knowledge in the process of becoming a professional through narrative medicine, clinical scenarios, evidence-based medicine and personal experiences. Selected stories of participants’ ontological and epistemological transformations, in their process of ideological becoming, are offered to argue for the urgency of dialogic ways of ‘seeing’ in potentially dangerous times.

Abstract:
This qualitative study offers an examination of the learning experiences of six individuals, each of whom initially learned for self-interested purposes, but later experienced a shift in their desire and pursued learning to benefit others. We conducted interviews that described this phenomenon and provided insight into the following question: What is the experience of a learner who transitions from learning out of self-interest to learning for the sake of another? Findings of this study include narrative case summaries for each participant and a cross-case analysis that includes six major themes regarding participants’ transition to altruistic forms of learning: humility as a prerequisite, communal learning, emphasis on the success of others, becoming more self-confident, becoming a more effective learner, and becoming more other centered. Overall, participants in this study found the most meaning by helping recipients achieve their own growth and development rather than by merely accomplishing tasks.

Abstract:
My art emerges from decades of the experience of building myself, sensitively aware of accumulated experience and the weight of accrued memory. Responding to this life I so deeply appreciate the longer I live, as sculptor, painter and poet, I merge these individual aesthetic observations into a layered work of many reads. Offering poetic observation as a visual sensation beyond the ears’ hearing carried on a field of color connects at some interior emotional level which is absent or very different in the uniformity of type. Time is present in my current work. “Corrugations”, not only in the poetic images emerging from three days in the embrace of nature but in the new task of the recycled cardboard of commerce as an agent of art. I share my observation of life as art objects of consideration, poetry embedded in the strong arms of bas relief sculpture, the abstract text of language make as visible as the emotional response to color. “Corrugations” becomes an environment where one can wander among the recycled attains a new nobility d offers sparse poems of human observation. Perhaps deceptively simple a certain richness exudes from the massed collection, two dozen glimpses into a state of mind at once impoverished and nourished by the vital power of wilderness. The machine of civilization has become almost a runaway train with a footprint greater than any natural cataclysmic act and we must create and foster a new state of balance within the biosphere. To value the promise of humanity is to seek to establish responsible civilization where the positive possibilities exist to cherish all forms of life. More important though is the nourishment of what human life could become as quality of all life becomes the most important and universal goal. To believe that growth is always a possible choice even in the midst of ancient negative behaviors which negate growth embracing positive change is perhaps less a luxury than a conscious personal choice and if my choice can inform consideration of choice in the viewer than my art has served well.

Chtereva, E. H. "Becoming 'another brick in the wall' : a thematic analysis of Central and Eastern European immigrants' experiences of psychological distress and help-seeking." Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2016. http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/29288/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Since 2004, a large number of immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have taken up residence in the UK. This study explored how the experience of immigration impacted on the wellbeing of sixteen participants of Central and Eastern European origin and whether they sought help for psychological distress. Despite the increased knowledge and understanding of help-seeking attitudes towards mental health issues of various minority groups in the UK, the experiences of the Central and Eastern European communities remain understudied. It is this gap, which this current study aimed to fill. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four male and twelve female immigrants from Central and Eastern European countries living in the UK. Interview transcripts were analysed using inductive thematic analysis following the seven steps outlined by Braun and Clarke (2013), within a qualitative paradigm and a critical realist framework. Results: Four overarching themes were identified in the analysis: immigration experience; views and meanings of mental health; help-seeking experience and addressing immigrants’ needs. Participants in the study reported having good mental health and the ability to deal with distress, but highlighted that a lack of English proficiency, low job attainment and experiences of prejudice and discrimination negatively affected their wellbeing. Most participants proposed that the best way to address their needs was to engage with their communities first, rather than to seek help from formal services. Discussion: The results provide a thorough description and facilitate understanding of the participants’ experiences, meanings and needs concerning their wellbeing. Possible practical implications for working therapeutically with this minority group are discussed from a social justice perspective. Importantly, this includes the recommendation to apply contextual approaches such as relational cultural theory to current ways of working. Conclusion: For most participants it was clear that settling in the UK was a stressful process influenced by cultural and socioeconomic factors that affected negatively their experience in the host country. Protective factors such as a good social network, English proficiency and equal economic opportunities contributed to positive experiences, whilst prejudice, discrimination and a lack of a culturally sensitive service provision had negative implications on their wellbeing. Addressing immigrants’ needs requires active engagement with these minority communities, which ideally would include acknowledging contextual factors affecting their wellbeing, highlighting discriminatory practices and policies, and building intrinsic forms of resilience.

Araújo, Pedro de Albuquerque. "O Pré-Figurativo: diferenciações de um liame musical." Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, 2010. http://www.bdtd.uerj.br/tde_busca/arquivo.php?codArquivo=2336.

Full text
Abstract:
We work here with the notion of bond, composed by the meeting of two conceptual nets: the pre-figurative method of music education, by Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, and the thinking without an image, by Gilles Deleuze. These concepts are taken as multiplicities, one being constituted by the other and vice versa. In the case of pre-figurative, we have a method that does not use previous models and because that takes thinking as becoming; and thinking without an image is a deterritorialising movement designing something that still does not exist but that can exist. That characterized an area neighborhood, a kind of roof, or a tone (in a musical sense), like a concrete roof, in which the tiles to recover only in parts the existence in the other and for the other simultaneously, which allows it to be said of a becoming-other. What is almost another, but it is not another or like another. Its starting from this bond, or this edging, as Deleuze would say, that music, as an act of creation, happens, or is produced.

Abstract:
Over the past fifty years, (financial) capitalism has brought about an enormous growth in wealth. Millions around the world have been lifted out of poverty. However, the downsides of the present global economic constitution are rapidly becoming evident as well. Rising inequality, soaring debt levels, and repeated cycles of boom and bust have proven to be some of its key characteristics. After the 2008 crisis brought the financial system to the brink of collapse, new regulations, stricter supervision, higher capital requirements, and ethical codes were introduced to the sector. Today we find ourselves in the middle of another economic boom. Yet one pressing question remains: has anything changed? Have the (necessary) repairs fixed the flaws in the system? Or do we require even more fundamental reforms? This volume builds on the observation that society has co-evolved with the financial sector. We cannot simply claim that 'finance' was the sole instigator of the 2008 crisis. Society itself has become financialized; the process of replacing relations, structures of trust and reciprocity, by anonymous and systemic transactions. The volume poses vital questions with regard to this societal development. How did this happen? And more importantly: is change possible? If yes, how? This volume contains 21 essays on the themes mentioned above. Authors include Jan Peter Balkenende, Wouter Bos, Lans Bovenberg, Govert Buijs, and Herman Van Rompuy. A recommendation by Dutch Minister of Finance Wopke Hoekstra is also included.

Abstract:
This chapter explores how property emerges as a moral convention. Several laboratory experiments on property in its nascence are used to understand this process. A key feature of these economics experiments is that the participants can chat in real time with one another regarding their activities. These candid conversations in the heat of the moment make up the data by which I explain how anonymous strangers in a group become just by mutually respecting what is mine and what is thine. The dialogue also illustrates what it means for someone to be unjust, namely, inflicting real and positive harm on others. As a window into the minds of the participants, the language further supports Adam Smith’s claim that the resentment of harm undergirds our moral sense of property. We become just in terms of respecting the boundaries of property through the fellow feeling of the ill desert of harm.

Abstract:
Part 3 then turns to aspects of collectivity over three different articulations in Spinoza: the Ethics, TTP, and TP. What does it mean to be one with another person of a common nature, to become ‘one body’ and ‘one mind’, and why does Spinoza repeatedly emphasise this at points across his works? Chapter 5 identifies a tendency towards unanimity that develops across Spinoza’s works unevenly. It is premised in his accounts of sociality and individuation in the Ethics, in which individuals are conatively compelled to associate with one another, and find in reason the most effective common ground in doing so. It argues that there is an emerging view of the good of unanimity, or collective right, which appears in the Ethics and TTP, with fuller exposition in the TP. While some scholarship has focused on the political implications of group subjectivity (e.g. multitudes), there is a wider and more systematic thought of collective power that goes beyond momentary democratic eruptions. This notion of collective right precedes the political as an intrinsic model of association, and one that is more flexible and universal than its specifically political manifestation.

Abstract:
This chapter reads Elena Ferrante’s novel My Brilliant Friend as a narrative of personal transformation through a process of active learning. In transformative activity, not only the onset but the entire process of personal transformation depends on the person’s active involvement in learning what she does, and thereby transforming herself into the person she becomes. The protagonists of Ferrante’s novel illustrate how transformative activity may take place through the aspiration to transcend the subjective confines of one’s present life–– and they do so by competing fiercely against one another. Competition can be an engine of large-scale transformation, because the goal of besting another person can serve as a proximate target for one’s transformative energies.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the theoretical concepts at the heart of our argument, beginning with a discussion of critical pedagogy, then demonstrating how archaeology requires its own pedagogic principles. It discusses the material components of archaeological teaching and learning, emphasizing how archaeological learning takes place in multiple locations and through different experiences, and argues that these are not disconnected, but that each feeds into and shapes one another. The chapter then argues that archaeology’s material turn provides a useful place to start re-thinking the materiality of archaeological pedagogy, and new materialist developments within archaeology are reviewed. Also discussed is the broader pedagogic literature, such as rhizomatic learning and the notion of ‘becoming’ in pedagogy. The chapter finally sets out the theoretical framework for the book, arguing that viewing the multiple assemblages of teaching and learning as composed of a range of material and human constituents, we produce a new understanding of processes of archaeological education.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how becoming a parent involves a huge transformation in social role and identity. It often spurs young people to want to act more grown-up and do better—at work, in their relationships, with their educations—than before, all to give their children a better life than they themselves had while growing up. These role transitions—to adulthood, partnership, and parenthood—are intertwined in these young people’s lives, and complications and challenges arise from tackling these transitions simultaneously. Amid a great deal of instability and change, the young parents in this study struggle to trust one another and themselves, which makes securing their desired social resources and avoiding social poverty that much more difficult.

Abstract:
This chapter explains the challenges of the transition to adulthood for the young parents in this study, and it reflects on the implications of this transition for their risk of social poverty. In today’s culture, the transition to adulthood is a self-focused time of instability and exploration. Young people are often not settled with their education, employment and career plans, living situation, transportation, and ability to pay the bills. The multitude of changes and possible futures of this stage in life make it more difficult for romantic couples to create a stable foundation for a future together and commit to one another, when so much of what is to come is unknown. In many ways, the transition to adulthood can increase the risk of social poverty.

This chapter explores the many unique experiences of converted German Muslims. When they convert, they have to deal with a dramatic loss of status in society—something for which they were not prepared. Born Muslims grew up learning the limits that society set for them. Even if they struggle against and challenge them, the marginalization they experience is a routine phenomenon. After being marginalized in the mainstream society to which they once unproblematically belonged, German Muslims face another unwelcome surprise when they realize that they do not fit in or not are welcomed by the existing Muslim communities in Germany, predominantly made up of Turkish and Arab communities that constitute the poorest, least educated segments of German society.

Abstract:
In this study, concept of knowledge economy has been held from the point of innovations it has brought, main features and factors and also the analysis of knowledge economy from Turkey’s perspective. Knowledge society has been started with the development of the first computer and evolved with the improvements in knowledge and communication sectors. In this process, relations with production, consumption and distribution which are main factors of economy and whole economic structure have been changed as to be based on knowledge. Strategic factor has become the knowledge. The new economy called knowledge economy is a web economy which is the main determiner in competitiveness and productivity. “Knowledge Assesment Methodology” has been developed by World Bank in order to measure the progress of countries towards becoming a knowledge economy. Also another indicator “Network Readiness Index” was developed by World Economic Forum. Therefore, in this study, the place of Turkey in becoming a knowledge society has been analysed by comparing Turkey with other countries in the world. Strength and weaknesses, opportunities and threats have also been analysed in terms of knowledge economy for Turkey.

Newly formed metal surface is often unstable and becomes stable when it is terminated with another molecule, but the original color and properties may be diminished when it is covered with oxygen or gasses in atmosphere. Anti-copper-corrosion additives adsorb onto the surface of copper and it is used in order to prevent this phenomena and save copper’s color and properties [1]. There are few molecule findings about anti-copper-corrosion additive, however, and the mechanism of adsorbtion onto the surface of cupper and prevent corrosion. Recently, real-time instrumentation technique using Otto-SPR was proposed, and it is becoming possible to observe how additives adsorb onto the surface in molecular level [2].

Cloud computing is maturing and becoming ubiquitous in people’s daily lives. As a result, cloud environments are providing moreand more services with better quality of service. Cloud customers, however, have suff ered from the vendor lock-in problem, in such a way that those who wish to migrate to another cloud provider require partial or total reimplementation of applications and virtual infrastructure. Moreover, the problem of heterogeneity among distinct cloud environments makes it diffi cult for the portability of resources between them. Therefore, this work focuses on the development of an ontology to handle multi-cloud heterogeneity, and thus, bring interoperability in the form of a service to perform the portability of virtual machines between diff erent providers.

Abstract:
Industrial aeroderivative gas turbines are becoming increasingly popular for use in both on-shore and off-shore installations. The characteristics of these machines — high efficiency in simple cycle operation, small size, and light weight — make them ideal for industrial applications. As the aeroderivative gas turbine has become more widely used, the need for more reliable monitoring methods has become increasingly apparent. Traditional velocity transducer based seismic monitoring systems have had several shortcomings when applied to aeroderivative gas turbines. One of these problems was nuisance alarms due to increasing transducer noise output. Another was not detecting increasing casing vibration because of transducer deterioration. Overcoming these problems has required advances in transducer technology as well as changes in signal processing techniques. This paper describes the technology and techniques used in new seismic vibration monitoring systems.

Abstract:
Hotel service is a complex process that can be considered from different aspects. New technologies are constantly entering the hotel service. "Smart hotels" are the wonder of the 21st century. The smartphone is becoming the main asset in the hotel. With it we control everything - we open our rooms, book various services, etc. Virtual and augmented reality are one of the main trends in the hotel industry. The possibilities of such technologies are endless. They can be used during the booking process, but mostly during the guest's stay at the hotel. Another important topic here is the sustainable development of tourism. More and more hotels are betting on the eco trend by using eco products and recycling materials and resources. This saves energy costs, which overall improves business results.

Abstract:
Many pipelines previously identified as unsuitable applications for leak detection — due to any one of a variety of “extreme” operating conditions — are now becoming subject to new regulations. As the trend toward more stringent regulation continues, more seemingly unsuitable lines will be effected. What constitutes an “extreme condition” to one may differ significantly from another, but a common thread connects them — the overwhelming sense of confronting the impossible. This paper examines leak detection performance under some of the most common extremes, those of temperature, operating conditions, products with difficult rheology, and situations in which a release poses immediate danger to life or the environment. The four case studies presented here demonstrate the effectiveness of combining static monitoring, “event detection” (monitoring for subtle changes in the energy and momentum of the product in the pipeline), and dynamic line-pack-compensated meter balance.

"Comparison of Monte Carlo Methods Efficiency to Solve Radiative Energy Transfer in High Fidelity Unsteady 3D Simulations." In ASME Turbo Expo 2017: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2017-64179.

Abstract:
The present work assesses different Monte Carlo methods in radiative heat transfer problems, in terms of accuracy and computational cost. Achieving a high scalability on numerous CPUs with the conventional forward Monte Carlo method is not straightforward. The Emission-based Reciprocity Monte Carlo Method (ERM) allows to treat each mesh point independently from the others with a local monitoring of the statistical error, becoming a perfect candidate for high-scalability. ERM is however penalized by a slow statistical convergence in cold absorbing regions. This limitation has been overcome by an Optimized ERM (OERM) using a frequency distribution function based on the emission distribution at the maximum temperature of the system. Another approach to enhance the convergence is the use of low-discrepancy sampling. The obtained Quasi-Monte Carlo method is combined with OERM. The efficiency of the considered Monte-Carlo methods are compared.

Abstract:
Pathogens are becoming more important than they have in the past. This is due to many factors, including the critical segments of the population (young, elderly, pregnant women, and individuals without natural immunity) now make-up 25% of the population. Analytical techniques are refined so that illnesses and their sources can be identified. Obviously, in the past, many sick people either were not treated and it was not proven why they were sick, or, they passed away and their death was termed “due to natural causes.” Also, the types of organisms that cause food-borne diseases of one type or another have increased over the years. At one time, organisms such as E. coli were simply an indicator of unsanitary conditions or fecal material. Now small numbers of certain strains of E. coli can cause severe illnesses and death. Topallı, Nurgün, and Birol Mercan. "A New Alternative Approach to The Concept of Competitive: Systemic Competitiveness." In International Conference on Eurasian Economies. Eurasian Economists Association, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.36880/c07.01501.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of “Systemic competitiveness” takes its fundamental from subject of economic development and industrialization. This term generally describes factors which enables individual companies becoming competitive. Traditional economic development approach analyzes the concept of competition in micro and macro level. However, in the systemic competitiveness approach, stable micro and macro framework is not enough to ensure competition although it’s necessary. Therefore, the concept of competition should be examined in four levels which are “micro”, “macro”, “meso”, “meta” for a healthy development. Another aspect that differentiates the approach of systemic competition from the concept of traditional competition is systemic competition benefits from different disciplines such as innovation economics, business economics, management, economics and industrial sociology in the analyses. The purpose of this study is to summarize the conceptual framework for the concept of systemic competitiveness in a systematic way and observe the sample of countries.

Full text
Abstract:
A rigid spherical particle translating at small tube Reynolds number in a shearing flow experiences lateral migration due to small inertia and wall effect. In a suspension flow of sufficiently small particles, Brownian motion is another factor. In this work, we investigate this migration phenomenon of Brownian particles in a pressure-driven flow for a range of particle volume fractions (φ) much less than 0.01. The flow velocity is varied, which results in bulk Pecle´t number (Pe) ranging over four orders of magnitude. Both the velocity and the particle distributions were measured. It has been found that when Pe is smaller than 1000, particles migrate away from the channel wall, and that the particle concentration in regions remote from the wall (more than 10 particle diameters) is nearly uniform; When Pe increases beyond 1000, particles move toward a preferred position with the migration effect becoming progressively stronger as Pe increases.

Oosterom, Marjoke, and James Sumberg. Are Young People in Rural Sub-Saharan Africa Caught in Waithood? Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2021.039.

Full text
Abstract:
The idea that large numbers of young people in sub-Saharan Africa are stuck in waithood – trapped between childhood and adulthood – dominates international development policy discourse. The belief is that because there are no jobs, young people cannot attain social markers of adulthood. Waithood has proved itself to be a very attractive way to frame debates and promote youth employment interventions. But research challenges two aspects of the waithood story: that young people are inactive; and that work is the only route into adulthood. Caution and nuance are required to prevent waithood becoming another catchy term that does little to improve policy.

Lumpkin, Shamsie, Isaac Parrish, Austin Terrell, and Dwayne Accardo. Pain Control: Opioid vs. Nonopioid Analgesia During the Immediate Postoperative Period. University of Tennessee Health Science Center, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21007/con.dnp.2021.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Opioid analgesia has become the mainstay for acute pain management in the postoperative setting. However, the use of opioid medications comes with significant risks and side effects. Due to increasing numbers of prescriptions to those with chronic pain, opioid medications have become more expensive while becoming less effective due to the buildup of patient tolerance. The idea of opioid-free analgesic techniques has rarely been breached in many hospitals. Emerging research has shown that opioid-sparing approaches have resulted in lower reported pain scores across the board, as well as significant cost reductions to hospitals and insurance agencies. In addition to providing adequate pain relief, the predicted cost burden of an opioid-free or opioid-sparing approach is significantly less than traditional methods. Methods The following groups were considered in our inclusion criteria: those who speak the English language, all races and ethnicities, male or female, home medications, those who are at least 18 years of age and able to provide written informed consent, those undergoing inpatient or same-day surgical procedures. In addition, our scoping review includes the following exclusion criteria: those who are non-English speaking, those who are less than 18 years of age, those who are not undergoing surgical procedures while admitted, those who are unable to provide numeric pain score due to clinical status, those who are unable to provide written informed consent, and those who decline participation in the study. Data was extracted by one reviewer and verified by the remaining two group members. Extraction was divided as equally as possible among the 11 listed references. Discrepancies in data extraction were discussed between the article reviewer, project editor, and group leader. Results We identified nine primary sources addressing the use of ketamine as an alternative to opioid analgesia and post-operative pain control. Our findings indicate a positive correlation between perioperative ketamine administration and postoperative pain control. While this information provides insight on opioid-free analgesia, it also revealed the limited amount of research conducted in this area of practice. The strategies for several of the clinical trials limited ketamine administration to a small niche of patients. The included studies provided evidence for lower pain scores, reductions in opioid consumption, and better patient outcomes. Implications for Nursing Practice Based on the results of the studies’ randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, the effects of ketamine are shown as an adequate analgesic alternative to opioids postoperatively. The cited resources showed that ketamine can be used as a sole agent, or combined effectively with reduced doses of opioids for multimodal therapy. There were noted limitations in some of the research articles. Not all of the cited studies were able to include definitive evidence of proper blinding techniques or randomization methods. Small sample sizes and the inclusion of specific patient populations identified within several of the studies can skew data in one direction or another; therefore, significant clinical results cannot be generalized to patient populations across the board.
