Abstract:
In this study, two candidate gene markers, bovine growth hormone gene and mitochondrial DNA, were characterized using PCR-RFLP (Polymerase Chain Reaction - Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) analysis. Previous studies on variation in the growth hormone gene have contributed to our understanding of the relationship between this gene and milk production in dairy cattle, but not for production traits in beef cattle. In mitochondrial DNA, variation has also been demonstrated mostly in dairy cattle, and associated with variation in milk production. The major aims of my study, therefore, were

In Brazil, estimate of methane (CH4) emission for the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory is carried out using the empirical Tier 2 approach published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Although, IPCC recommends the use of a more specific, mechanistic Tier 3 approach, this is hampered by a lack of consolidated data for development, evaluation and application of such a Tier 3 approach. The purpose of the present modelling study was to evaluate whether a Tier 3 approach instead of the Tier 2 approach has merit in estimating the effect of improvement of diet quality by feeding

Thesis (MScAgric)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to provide scientifically founded guidelines to enhance the understanding of beef production from natural pastures in arid sweet veld regions. Cattle from four breed types ranging from large to small frame sizes (Simmentaler cross > Bonsmara cross > Afrikaner > Nguni) were compared in terms of cow production and efficiency as well as the growth performance, carcass and meat quality of steers slaughtered at 18, 24 and 30 months of age. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of selected traits such as age, sex, body weight, body length and height, body condition score (BCS), coatscore (CS), skin thickness and average skin surface temperature on tick burdens in beef cattle. Bonsmara cattle (n= 143) were used to measure visible tick counts, body condition score, coat score, skin thickness, body height and length, body weight, body surface temperature, gender and inter calving period. Measurements were taken from April to December. All animals were managed extensively on natural and cultivated pastures near Geor
