When proportionality is respected, no one with the power to disrupt society has an incentive to do so. This equilibrium situation helps explain the high degree of stability in Sparta’s sociopol

Abstract:
A novel wind machine is described in which an airfoil-like kite is tethered to a moving base; the non-conservative nature of the wind loads over a cycle of the kite allows energy to be extracted at the base. A dynamic model for the kite-tether system is derived which models the tether as a series of point masses connected by massless rods. The lift and drag characteristics of the kite are determined from airfoil calculations. The system has been found to be stable via simulation at several wind speeds of interest. A sample base motion which extracts energy from the oncoming wind is also presen

With the rapid development of big data and computing power, the use of artificial intelligence in the design field is becoming more and more widespread, and web design is one of the areas that benefit significantly. And one of the extremely important elements of web design is color, where the selection and matching of colors has a significant impact on the message of a web page. However, automatic color design for web pages is challenging, as it must not only meet aesthetic goals, but also try to ensure emotional communication. In this paper, we propose a method for extracting web page color s

Small animal models have been widely used in cardiovascular research when studying the development and treatment of different diseases. This kind of research has promoted the development of noninvasive techniques to assess cardiac tissue and blood vessels of small animals. Recently, we have developed a high-frequency ultrasound imaging system for small animals, in particular, mouse and rat models. In this work, we aim to elucidate the usefulness of using spectral analysis of the received radiofrequency (RF) ultrasound signals to extract quantitative parameters to assess mechanical properties o

Vibration-based structural health monitoring (SHM) frameworks rely upon accurately identified natural frequencies and mode shapes of structures in the field, which is critical information for damage diagnostics and model updating. Vibrationbased techniques have traditionally relied on discrete contact-based sensors. Despite the success of traditional sensing modalities, challenges and limitations remain: 1) the sensors need to be placed at discrete locations, and 2) the structure needs to be accessed for instrumentation. Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) dietary supplements, including standardized or partially purified extracts with high concentrations of curcumin, have enjoyed sustained sales growth in the United States over the past 5-6 years, while turmeric powder continues to be an important spice, flavor, and colorant in many regions of the world. There is considerable evidence that both powdered root and rhizome, as well as root and rhizome extracts, have been subjected to adulteration. Forming the foundations of large-scale knowledge bases, probabilistic databases have been widely studied in the literature. In particular, probabilistic query evaluation has been investigated intensively as a central inference mechanism. However, despite its power, query evaluation alone cannot extract all the relevant information encompassed in large-scale knowledge bases. To exploit this potential, we study two inference tasks; namely finding the most probable database and the most probable hypothesis for a given query. Thermosyphons are an artificial ground-freezing technique that has been used to stabilize permafrost since the 1960s. The largest engineered structure that uses thermosyphons to maintain frozen ground is the Trans Alaska Pipeline, and it has over 124,000 thermosyphons along its approximately 1300 km route. In passive mode, thermosyphons extract heat from the soil and transfer it to the environment when the air temperature is colder than the ground temperature. This passive technology can promote ground cooling during cold winter months. To address the growing need for maintaining frozen ground
