Abstract:
In neonatal jaundice, plasma bilirubin has to be measured repeatedly in order to direct phototherapy. Invasive determination is standard. The authors delineate a concept for the non-invasive spectrophotometric determination of absolute plasma bilirubin concentration. By referencing the pulsatile spectrophotometric signal component of the metabolite of interest (MOI, here: bilirubin) to the pulsatile spectrophotometric signal component of a reference metabolite (MOR, here: water) of known plasma concentration, the absolute MOI concentration can be calculated. A simple and sensitive spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of cetirizine (I), ebastine (II), fexofenadine (III), ketotifen (IV), and loratadine (V) based on ion-pair complex formation with erythrosine B. The pink color of the produced complex was measured at 550 nm without solvent extraction. Appropriate conditions were established by studying the color reaction between erythrosine B and the studied drugs to obtain the maximum sensitivity. Abstract:
The study of a multilayered and multicomponent system by spatially resolved X-ray fluorescence microscopy poses unique challenges in achieving accurate quantification of elemental distributions. This is particularly true for the quantification of materials with high X-ray attenuation coefficients, depth-dependent composition variations and thickness variations. A widely applicable procedure for use after spectrum fitting and quantification is described. This procedure corrects the elemental distribution from the measured fluorescence signal, taking into account attenuation of the incident beam

A new and accurate method to determine the mass attenuation coefficient, μm, for low photon energy employing NaI(Tl) X-ray detector and radioactive source is described. Effect of size of collimator and the selection of width of photopeak for integration on the contribution from scattered photons to the transmitted intensity is studied systematically and optimum size of collimator and photopeak limits for integration are established. With a 6 mm diameter collimator and FWHM for photopeak limits it was found that Beer-Lambert's law was rigorously valid over transmission range of 50–2%. Using thi
