In order to examine population structure (micro-evolution) in Begonia and its congruence to higher patterns of diversity (macro-evolution), nuclear microsatellite markers have been isolated and applied to two Begonia species, B. socotrana and B. sutherlandii. Begonia socotrana is endemic to the Haggeher Mountains of the island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean, where it has a total range of less than 10 x 15 km. Abstract:
Caulogenesis and rhizogenesis were studied in cultured explants of Begonia erythrophylla. The patterns of development were compared to each other and to explants cultured on non-organogenic media. Initially morphological and histological observations were carried out using both light and scanning electron microscopy. Shoots and roots were formed from cells of epidermal origin and were often associated with glandular hairs. Deposition of starch was correlated to organogenesis, with starch grains localized in the superficial layers of the explant, prior to the formation of meristematic regions.

Monoecy, the production of distinct male and female flowers on the same plant, is an important, though little studied, sexual strategy in the rainforest understory. This study of a monoecious plant discovered a cue to induce flowering, explored the interplay of gender constraint vs. plasticity in a natural population, and tested possible causes of gender in two laboratory experiments. An experiment in the lab found that reduced photoperiod for three weeks is an unambiguous cue for flowering. The remarkably long inductive period is followed by a long and variable period of floral initiation. T

Polymorphism in morphological traits, such as leaf and decoration of leaf surface in B. formosana has documented. Begonia formosana has the highest chromosome number (n=30) among the Taiwanese Begonia. Its evolution may have involved in hybridization and polyploidization events. Based on the known chromosome number in Taiwan''s Begonia, species with chromosome number n=11 and n=19 may be the most possible parental species. Inter-specific hybridization followed by polyploi

There are fourteen native species and four endemic natural hybrids in Taiwan in which the highest density of natural hybrids and species containing the most complex chromosome numbers in Asia have been reported. Besides, the native Begonia species in Taiwan show great potential as ornamental and medical plants. However, very few molecular tools have been conducted in Begonia species identification and diversity investigation. This study had employed 120 SSR markers designed from monocot genomes

Pigmental type (chemical color) and structural type (physical color) are two main mechanisms of foliar variegation, have been reported. Some plants keep variegation throughout their life history, some only show this feature at the juvenile stage, and still others display this feature before flowering time. Anti-herbivory and photoprotection are two main hypotheses of the ecological meaning of foliar variegation. Begonia formosana (Begoniaceae), a shade herb native to Taiwan, has va

Their year-production amounts are the top two among all cool-season bedding plants in Taiwan. However, the continuous global warming effect has brought negative impacts to the growth and quality of cool-season bedding plants. Therefore, the aim of this research is to select proper types of both single and combined-chemicals that may improve the heat tolerance of impatiens and wax begonias, and to optimize the

In this case, the importance of the "public" becomes more and more important. As one of the modern frameworks for expressing public relations, a third sector such as a non-profit organization needs to maintain relationships with government departments and businesses at all times.
