This PhD research project investigated differences in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) between male adolescents with and without ADHD, and the relationship between these and performance and event related potential (ERP) assessments of brain function and clinical behavioural measures. AbstractDesigning the vibroacoustic properties of thin-walled structures is of particularly high practical relevance in the design of vehicle structures. The vibroacoustic properties of thin-walled structures, e.g., vehicle bodies, are usually designed using finite element models. Additional development effort, e.g., experimental tests, arises if the quality of the model predictions are limited due to inherent model uncertainty. Model uncertainty of finite element models usually occurs in the modeling process due to simplifications of the geometry or boundary conditions. The latter highly affect the vibroacoustic properties of a thin-walled structure. The stiffness of the boundary condition is often assumed to be infinite or zero in the finite element model, which can lead to a discrepancy between the measured and the calculated vibroacoustic behavior. This paper compares two different boundary condition assumptions for the finite element (FE) model of a simply supported rectangular plate in their capability to predict the vibroacoustic behavior. The two different boundary conditions are of increasing complexity in assuming the stiffness. In a first step, a probabilistic model parameter calibration via Bayesian inference for the boundary conditions related parameters for the two FE models is performed. For this purpose, a test stand for simply supported rectangular plates is set up and the experimental data is obtained by measuring the vibrations of the test specimen by means of scanning laser Doppler vibrometry. In a second step, the model uncertainty of the two finite element models is identified. For this purpose, the prediction error of the vibroacoustic behavior is calculated. The prediction error describes the discrepancy between the experimental and the numerical data. Based on the distribution of the prediction error, which is determined from the results of the probabilistic model calibration, the model uncertainty is assessed and the model, which most adequately predicts the vibroacoustic behavior, is identified.

The preschool age (3–6 years) is a unique period for development as both emotion regulation and foundational brain development are rapidly maturing. Emotions such as frustration are common during this age; however, there is extensive variability along the spectrum from typical to atypical. This juxtaposition of normative misbehaviors with stable irritable temperament presents unique challenges to the differentiation of normative variation from the onset of clinical problems. As such, recent research has focused efforts on improving methods for differentiating normative and clinically concerning behavior. Improved neuroimaging tools, in combination with behavioral and clinical assessment, have provided an additional tool for assessing pediatric irritability. The authors believe that joint consideration of brain–behavior atypicalities will enhance early identification of clinically concerning irritability. To this end, this chapter aims to summarize the rapid development occurring during the preschool years, describe advancements in developmentally appropriate irritability assessments, and integrate these measurements within a neurodevelopmental framework.

Schools ordinarily support establishing or increasing target behaviors, for example, increasing the number of letter sounds mastered or the frequency of social initiations; however, supporting the reduction of target behaviors is also an important goal of behavior analytic practice in schools. Although numerous target behaviors may warrant functional assessment and subsequent reduction at the individual level (e.g., aggression, self-injurious behavior), this chapter focuses on describing the implementation of and research outcomes related to reductive interventions designed to help teachers decrease disruptive, inappropriate, off-task, or problem behavior in general education classrooms. Reductive interventions describe strategies that explicitly target reduced levels of a target behavior. These interventions may be implemented to address chronic problem behaviors that may have been unresponsive to other positive interventions. The chapter describes various reductive strategies that may be implemented at a Tier I level, such as time-out, think time, and structured recess.

Avatars are an important feature of digital environments. Existing both in social networks and webchats (usually as static images) and in single-player and online video games (as dynamic characters, often humanoid), avatars are meant to represent users' action and communication within digital environments. Research has shown that, when they are customized by users, avatars are not created “randomly,” rather they maintain some kind of relationship with users' actual self-representation and identity. Abstract:
Behavior, like other phenotypic traits, varies as a function of genes and environment. Variation occurs at all demographic levels, within individuals over time, between individuals, and between populations and species. Whether variation is important will depend on the behavior and its context. For example, whether a bird scratches its head by extending a leg above or below the adjacent wing may not have profound fitness consequences, although species differences in this character may shed light on phylogenetic relationships (e.g., Wallace 1963; Simmons 1964). In contrast, other behaviors, such as the instantaneous decision to migrate or not, may affect fitness directly by altering the schedule of fecundity or mortality (Dingle et al. 1982). Such strategic behaviors (Maynard Smith 1982), which often depend for their expression on the assessment of local cues (Moran 1992), are complicated and important evolutionary traits. The phenotypic variability that defines them, however, has hindered our ability to treat them with formal evolutionary–genetic analyses that are central to the complete understanding of any putative adaptation. Much of the evolutionarily important variation observed in strategic behavior probably stems from differences among individuals due to genotype–environment interactions. To illustrate this in the most general terms, consider that behavioral distinctions among individuals may be based on (1) differences in the environmental conditions they experience, (2) differences in genetic elements that code for specific tactics or predispositions, or (3) differences in the genotype–environment interaction, manifested through developmental or facultative pathways, that is, “norms of reaction” (Schmalhausen 1949). Norms of reaction are functions that describe how a genotype is translated into a phenotype by the environment. They are becoming widely employed as a paradigm in evolutionary studies of physiological and life-history traits (e.g., Dingle 1992; reviewed by Stearns 1989), but are not yet used widely in studies of behavioral traits (but see Thompson this volume). Because much of the variation that behaviorists observe within populations and species is likely the result of a complex combination of individual differences in genetic code and differences in environment, norms of reaction need to be explored as a method for understanding the sources and structure of behavioral variation.

Finally, commonly used approaches to assess the effects of Triple P are outlined.

The care and study of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and suicidal ideation/behavior presents unique challenges to both clinicians and researchers. In this chapter, background information regarding TBI (i.e., definition, severity classifications, epidemiology, assessment, and common postinjury sequelae/psychiatric disorders) are presented to provide context for a discussion of the complicated relationships between brain injury and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The potential contribution of executive dysfunction (e.g., impairment in reasoning and/or decision-making) is reviewed. In addition, the idea that propensity toward or against engaging in risky behavior can be used to increase understanding regarding the relationship between TBI and suicidal ideation and behaviors is discussed. Last, clinical challenges and future research directions are presented.

This chapter highlights the highly influential and evolving contribution of cyber activity across a range of harassing, threatening, stalking, and violent behavior. Multiple psychological factors (e.g., perceived anonymity and low-risk nature of activity) influence the negative impacts of cyber and electronic activity. It is strongly suggested that the de facto standard of practice emerges in that one cannot perform threat assessment and management without assessing the electronic activity by the subjects of concern. The omnipresence of cyber and electronic communications mandates that threat assessment and management cannot occur without a review of pertinent electronic activity and communications that are reasonably accessible. The research to date suggests that threat assessment professionals should focus on the pattern and nature, as opposed to the modality, of communications when assessing the risk entailed with threatening and harassing electronic communications. The nature and pattern of contacts must also be evaluated in the context of how the correspondence relates to other contact behaviors as part of a chain of events signaling intent from ideation to action. Among such factors are the presence of relevant content factors (e.g., personalized motive, expressing intent or plans to approach, language regarding justified violence, and rhetoric suggesting incitement of violence) as well as factors related to leakage of intent and intensity of effort. Implications for threat management, particularly related to the impact on victims, as well as strategies to help combat such online harassment or abuse are also discussed.
