Abstract:
Compulsive buying disorder (CBD) affects a significant percentage of those in the general population. However, CBD has not received as much attention with regard to research and training providers in its assessment and treatment as other psychiatric disorders. Formal diagnostic criteria have been put forth, and there are a variety of assessment instruments for evaluating buying behavior using both questionnaire and interview formats. Based on the literature to date, it appears that disorder-specific cognitive-behavioral therapy has been most successful in treating those with CBD. Treatment providers should also be aware that mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and compulsive hoarding often accompany CBD and complicate its treatment, and these disorders should be addressed within the treatment paradigm. Further research is needed to define barriers to motivation for change and treatment compliance among individuals with CBD, as well as factors associated with both positive and negative treatment outcomes.

Shiffman, Saul. Ecological Momentary Assessment. Edited by Kenneth J. Sher. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199381708.013.1.

Full text
Abstract:
Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a method for collecting data in real time and in real-world settings in order to avoid retrospective biases, collect ecologically valid data, and study behavioral processes over time. EMA is particularly suited for studying substance use because use is episodic and related to contextual factors like mood, setting, and cues. This chapter addresses the application of EMA to substance use research, describing important elements of EMA design and analysis and illustrating them with examples from substance use research. It discusses and reviews data on methodological issues such as compliance and reactivity and covers considerations in designing EMA studies of substance use. Data on the associations between EMA data on substance use and more traditional self-report data are reviewed. EMA methods reveal substance use patterns not captured by questionnaires or retrospective data and hold promise for substance use research and treatment.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the development of cross-national survey research in political science and the challenges that it brings. Cross-national surveys have proliferated across the globe and arguably now form one of the most important frontiers in the development of survey research in political science. Cross-national comparison allows researchers to investigate the importance of institutional and cultural contexts that shape public opinion and political behavior. The chapter traces the development of such instruments for the purposes of comparative analysis in political science, in the context of more general developments in polling and survey research. As an example, it focuses on the case of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES), an international collaboration active since 1996, examining the development of the project and evaluating issues such as cross-cultural equivalence in questionnaire design, survey mode and response rates, and case selection.

Jain, Rakesh, and Shailesh Jain. Disability in chronic low back pain. Edited by Paul Farquhar-Smith, Pierre Beaulieu, and Sian Jagger. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198834359.003.0076.

Full text
Abstract:
The landmark paper discussed in this chapter, ‘Pain-related fear is more disabling than pain itself: Evidence on the role of pain-related fear in chronic back pain disability’, published by Crombez et al. in 1999, investigates the issue of disability in chronic low back pain and explores the role of psychological factors in disability. The paper reports on three independent chronic low back pain studies in which behavioural performance and the degree of reported disability were correlated with psychological factors such as catastrophization, negative affect, anxiety, and pain-related fear (e.g. fear of re-injury). In a counterintuitive finding, pain-related fear was more disabling that the pain itself. This paper thus highlighted the need to assess and address the psychological domains of pain; it also validated three questionnaires that are important in the pain field, and established a biopsychosocial approach to understanding, explaining, and treating chronic low back pain.

Abstract:
Depressive disorders onset early in development. Depression during childhood and adolescence is associated with serious disruptions in emotional, social, and occupational functioning into adulthood and a high likelihood of recurrence. This chapter discusses clinical manifestations, prevalence, and course of depression presenting in early childhood (ages 3–6), middle childhood/preadolescence (ages 7–12), and adolescence (13–18). An overview is presented of standardized interviews and questionnaires for clinical assessment of depression in children and adolescents; the chapter summarizes research on empirically supported treatments for youth depression. Also included is a case study of a depressed adolescent with treatment plans formulated from both cognitive behavior therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy perspectives. Future directions for research on depressive disorders in youths are discussed, including neuroimaging research using ecologically valid stimuli, empirically supported interventions for younger children and preadolescents, and personalization of psychosocial treatment to youth’s profiles of risk and protective factors to increase effectiveness.

Feather, N. T. Historical Background to Research on Job Loss, Unemployment, and Job Search. Edited by Ute-Christine Klehe and Edwin van Hooft. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199764921.013.001.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides a selective review of past research on job loss, unemployment, and job search up to the beginning of the 1990s. The Great Depression studies in the 1930s at Marienthal by Jahoda and colleagues and by Bakke at Greenwich and New Haven are described, along with other research at the time. These early studies sowed the seeds for subsequent research programs in England, Europe, and Australia; the theories that emerged from this early and later research are described. They include stage theory, deprivation theory, agency theory, and vitamin theory. Other more general approaches—such as stress and coping models and expectancy-value theory—are also described as relevant to the unemployment experience. The historical review provides lessons about the importance of using a variety of methodologies that include descriptive field research, survey and questionnaire studies, longitudinal research, and research across cultures. It also suggests that progress will involve the application of midrange theories about work, paid employment, and unemployment targeted to particular issues such as psychological well-being, health-related problems, social and family effects, and job-search behavior.

Tarsia, Paolo. Dyspnoea in the critically ill. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199600830.003.0083.

Full text
Abstract:
Dyspnoea may be defined as a subjective experience of discomfort associated with breathing. Breathing discomfort arises as a result of complex interactions between signals relayed from the upper airways, the chest wall, the lungs, and the central nervous system. Integration of this information with higher brain centres provides further processing. The final aspects of the sensation of dyspnoea are influenced by contextual, environmental, behavioural, and cognitive factors. At least three qualitatively distinct sensations have been employed to describe discomfort in breathing—air hunger, increased effort of breathing, and chest tightness. Air hunger has been shown to be associated with stimulation of chemoreceptors. Increased effort of breathing may arise in clinical conditions that impair respiratory muscle performance through abnormal mechanical loads or when respiratory muscles are weakened (neuromuscular diseases). Chest tightness is often experienced by asthmatic patients during episodes of acute bronchoconstriction. Measurement of dyspnoea is essential in order to assess it adequately and monitor response to treatment. Dyspnoea assessment may be carried out thorough a number of different scales, questionnaires, or exercise tests. Strategies in controlling dyspnoea should not focus uniquely on decreasing dyspnoea intensity. Patients may profit from interventions that decrease the unpleasantness associated with breathlessness without necessarily affecting the intensity component of the symptom.
