Apter, Brian. "A large-scale quantitative investigation of teacher-feedback and students' on-task behaviour as associated indicators of the social-emotional climate for learning in academic lessons in UK secondary schools using a systematic observation method : 'MICRO'." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2016. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/99763/.

Abstract:
Systematic observations by 33 psychologist-observers of 228 lessons in 28 UK secondary schools were included in this study. A new method: the Mixed Interval Classroom Observation (MICRO) schedule was used to collect data about teachers’ use of 4 different types of verbal feedback and make associations with the proportion of students’ time in academic classes that they were following teachers’ directions and were ‘on-task’. Key findings from 27 UK secondary schools included: students were significantly less ‘on-task’ than students in UK primary schools; secondary school teachers used low freque

Albrecht, Karen A. "Observation scale effects on fluid transport behavior of soil." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43037.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>Variabilities of hydraulic and solute transport properties of soil are examined at three scales: pore-scale, sample volume-scale, and field-scale. Undisturbed soil cores were taken at 19 subsites spaced logarithmically along a 150 m line transect in a Groseclose mapping unit near Blacksburg; Virginia. Three core sizes were taken at each subsite at the soil surface and 0.5 m depth. 'Small' cores were-40x54 mm; 'medium' cores were 60X100 mm; and 'large' cores were 100x150 mm. Macropore effects on solute transport were evaluated using monocontinuum and bicontinuum models. Bicontinuum-predicte

Popescue, Elizabeth Ashley. "Agreement of Peer Comparison Data Between Direct Behavior Rating Scales and Systematic Direct Observation Methods." DigitalCommons@USU, 2012. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/1305.

Full text
Abstract:
Recently, Direct Behavior Ratings have been shown to be a promising new tool for observing students and classrooms in an education setting for a variety of behaviors. The traditional method of observing students and classroom behavior was through tools called Systemic Direct Observations. Currently, there are only a few studies looking at the use of a Direct Behavior Rating as a device to collect peer comparison data to estimate classwide behavior problems. This study examined the estimated percentages of on-task and disruptive behavior between a Systemic Direct Observation with momentary time

Chamberlain, Carter W. "Quasar Outflows: Their Scale, Behavior and Influence in the Host Galaxy." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/70911.

Full text
Abstract:
Quasar outflows are a major candidate for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback, and their capacity to influence the evolution of their host galaxy depends on the mass-flow rate (M) and kinetic luminosity (E) of the outflowing material. Both quantities require measurement of the distance (R) to the outflow from the central source as well as physical conditions of the outflow, which can be determined using spectral observations of the quasar. This thesis presents spectral analyses leading to measurements of R, M and E for three different quasar outflows. Analysis of LBQS J1206+1052 revealed mul

Beecham, R. "Understanding cycling behaviour through visual analysis of a large-scale observational dataset." Thesis, City University London, 2014. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/4770/.

Full text
Abstract:
The emergence of third-generation, technology-based public bikeshare schemes offers new opportunities for researching cycling behaviour. In this study, data from one such scheme, the London Cycle Hire Scheme (LCHS), are analysed. Algorithms are developed for summarising and labelling cyclists’ usage behaviours and tailored visual analysis applications are designed for exploring their spatiotemporal context. Many of the research findings provide support to existing literature, particularly around gendered cycling behaviour. As well as making more discretionary journeys, women appear to preferen

Abstract:
The present study aims at pushing the identification process earlier to preschool age for children on the mild end of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by validating teachers’ use of the 13-item Classroom Social Behaviors Observation Scale (CSBOS) (Au, Cheung, Tse, & Au, In Prep) that focuses on children’s peer interaction in class. Seven teachers and 149 children in an international kindergarten in Hong Kong participated in the study.
